A design library essential.......2000-09-01
Although not as well known as others from his period such as Paul Rand and Saul Bass, Lester Beall was indeed a trailblazer. Most designers will recognize his work for the Rural Electrification Act which produced some of the most monumental and striking posters ever to be designed. Beall's work is as relevant and fresh today as it was 40 years ago. His logo for the International Paper Co. is in my opinion one of the best examples of identity you will ever see, and its development is documented well in this book. In order to play a succesful role in the future of graphic design, you must first understand it's history. A good way to start understanding its history is to study men like Bass, Rand, Brad Thompson and Lester Beall. You must have this book.

For the EQ Completists ONLY!.......2004-03-12
First off, this EQ Readers Collection is part of the massive drivel WARP pumped out in the late 90's. Being a die-hard and feverishly devoted fan of EQ for over 15 years, I was shocked to see the quality of work in this and other Readers Collections.
This is not drawn by Wendy Pini, the Elf-Mom supreme, creator and co-founder of the greatest elf-adventure of all time. These stories contain interesting art, at least not as horrid as some of the other readers collections, but the story draaaaaaags on and only has great sequences in fits and starts.
I realize the Pini's wanted to 'get all the stories out there that needed to be told...' so to speak, but really, this was not the way to do it.
Buyers should also know that this collection of "Wavedancers" is NOT the original early 90's 6-issue series of "Wavedancers" created by Blackmermaid Productions. Those were tragically discontinued due to series of unfortunate squabbles and ultimately shelved as a 'what if' tale. Too bad, for once the Pinis struck gold with another creative team.
I recomend this Readers Collection for EQ completists only (formerly like me). For those that want true beauty in their Mer-elves, I urge you to seek out the first 6 comic issues of "Wavedancers" by BMP, as you will not be dissapointed.

I as you may already know am a complete fan of all yhe elfquest books and comics. This is as good as any of her other peices of work with a livly story and great characters.
Wavedancers: A review.......2000-03-30
This elfquest readers collection book does not focus on the elves we all adore, Cutter, Leetah, Ember, Scouter, Skywise, etc. Instead it concentrates on the elves who remained in the sea. Like Winnowill, they had gills but were mostly the same as the other elves. Not a best read, it was slightly boring at times.

Enjoy this book, just don't take it too seriously........2006-08-26
Even though some are over the top, this collection of jokes about hicks and their ways are funny. The illustrations add to it by exaggerating the jokes. Some examples are:
*) You wonder how service stations keep their restrooms so clean.
*) You rip a loud one and blame your date.
*) You pick your nose in line at the bank.
*) Going to the bathroom in the middle of the night requires shoes and a flashlight.
*) Your wife owns a camouflage nightie.
*) Your dog can smoke a cigarette.
*) Your muffler is held on by a coat hanger.
I laughed my way through them and must confess that the last one on the list applied to me in my younger days. Read this book and enjoy yourself.

I really laugh my butt of when i read this book! Jeff Foxwrthy is the funniest comedian alive today! If you like laughing at or about red-necks you'l love this book! Buy it because it's the BEST of Jeff FOxworthy!
"Redneck Classic" Review (From a Redneck's Daughter).......1998-06-04
I think this is a very funny book, although some of the jokes are too gross. It has clips from many of Foxworthy's various redneck books, like "You Might Be A Redneck If", "Games Rednecks Play", & "Hick is Chic". Overall, it's a pretty good book. I'm getting it for my dad for Father's Day. I'm sure he'll love it. :)

Uncommon Music From A Special Past.......2000-06-26
This book, a collection of indigenous songs reprinted from last century's original edition, offers a rare and precious glimpse into the old-time life and culture of the African-American residents of the Georgia Sea Islands -- a way of life now almost totally wiped out by the onslaught of tourism and related development.
Lydia Parrish, wife of famous painter and illustrator Maxfield Parrish, made it her life's work to discover and help preserve a unique culture which even then, nearly a century ago, was showing signs of fading away under the pressures of modern life.
Parrish faithfully collected and recorded traditional music of Georgia Sea Island residents, most of whom were escaped or freed slaves who gravitated here to make new homes off the beaten track of a society with no ready place for them. This book, with its lyrics, scores, and editorial notes, along with Parrish's other work in this arena, were the keys to keeping this tradition from fading completely from national consciousness. She also promoted the founding of the Georgia Sea Island Singers (whose unique audio recordings of this material can also be found at amazon.com).
Fans of folk music, American history, African-American history, slave lore, anthropology and even Maxfield Parrish will find this book a rare and unusual item for the bookshelf and, if musically inclined, for the voice and ear as well.

Not worth the money.......2006-08-27
The other reviewers are right on the mark. These puzzles are much too easy for anyone who likes a crossword challenge. They are small in size, with a preponderance of well-known four- and five-letter words. Worse, the puzzle constructors haven't even tried to come up with challenging clues (exs: "Famous constellation" for Orion; "first-aid contrivance" for sling). Many clues are simple fill-in-the-blanks. My average solving time for these is five-ten minutes, and I'm one who is often challenged by the Sunday NYT Crossword compilations.
The publisher's idea of including a Puzzle Meter on the back of their crossword volumes is nice, but classifying these Saturday puzzles as "maximum hard" is ridiculous.
Not the *toughest*.......2001-10-05
I guess I expected these crosswords to be along the line of the Sunday Times puzzles. Briefly, if you like your crosswords really tough like I do, these ones will be way too easy. I put the book away after doing only a couple and haven't touched it since.

I'm no super-brain, but I really expected more from this collection. The regular New York Times Sunday Crossword books are superior to this edition.
Good But Not That Tough.......2000-10-12
The title of the book is a bit misleading, though strictly speaking it might be historically correct. These are good and entertaining crosswords, but surprisingly easy compared with current N.Y. Times Saturday puzzles. I find I can typically solve a crossword from this book in about half the time a current puzzle takes.

For 25 years I have been teaching high level engineers and directors at Honda, Mitsubishi Fuso, Mazda and a host of auto part manufacturers.
Kaizen is a mythical term in modern day business practices. Japan's ability to produce high quality products across the board stems foremost from the from the cultural value of obedience to authority. From a young age people are taught to follow an authority figure. Combine this allegiance with a deftness to be meticulous - also instilled through the education system - and you have a workforce which can attain high product quality. Kaizen only works because of the docile obedience of the workforce, not because the theory is a magic bullet.
Excellent Book on Kaizen Concept.......2006-05-24
This is an excellent book on how production is organised in Japan. It explains the Kaizen concept of continuous improvement and its implementation, highlighting the essential differences between the production and operations management philosophies of the West with those of Japan. The foundation of the Kaizen method consists of five fundamental elements namely teamwork, personal discipline, improved morale, quality circles and suggestions for improvement.
This is a very enlightening book for those who want to understand the basic concepts of continuous improvement (as opposed to innovation or business process reengineering) in the production process and how this has been successfully applied in Japan. Some very successful companies like Toyota owe their success largely to the employment of this concept.
This is essential reading for those who wish to introduce Kaizen in their organisation. The book is written in a simple and easy to follow and understand style. However, the book is becoming a bit dated having been written two decades ago, and in any case, the spotlight nowadays has shifted to China, but nevertheless, this is excellent reading about a concept that is still delivering good value to those companies that are correctly employing it.
Excellent overview of Kaizen and TQC (Total Quality Control).......2006-03-21
This book is a must-read for process improvement and Quality Assurance professionals. Senior corporate management would also benefit from selections, especially the first chapter and the chapter on problem solving. The book outlines the key fundamentals, principles, requirements, and expectations related to Kaizen (continuous improvement), with a focus on the highest-level cross-functional goals of Quality, Cost, and Schedule (in that order) that ultimately drive profitability. Appendices, including summaries of 5S, old and new seven statistical tools, Deming Prize criteria, and Cannon company case study are as informative as the body of the book. On the down side, there is some significant repitition. Although the book is nearly 20 years old, it is timeless and as relevant as ever.

Kaizen, a Japanese word means improvement. How can Japanese enterprise success is the main topic in this book. Actually, Japan has been under economic recession for nearly 10 years. But the Japanese enterprise can still survive, and some enterprises are under the list of Fortune 500. There must be some secret behind.
This first version of this book is written in 1986, Japan at that moment still maintain a high growth, and Japanese enterprise takes a major role in the global business environment. The author found that the major reasons are due to their modification rather than innovation. And these management concepts were learned by foreign companies and used as a framework to develop their management structure. From this book, you will learn lots of the Japanese culture and Japanese management style.
Moreover, you also understand the history of management development. Most of the management concepts used in foreign countries are based on Japanese firm. And all these companies now become the Global 100 companies. After reading this book, you will learn more about the success story of these enterprises, and you will also know that their history and culture as well.
But, there is some limitation, because the book has been written nearly twenty years before, the business environment is totally changed, the competition and the consumer behaviour have been changed, therefore some of the strategies are not applicable. Also, the failures of some Japanese enterprises during the economic recession also prove that some strategies mentioned here are not worked.
Kaizen is a good book for you to understand more about the Asia culture especially the Japanese firm culture. If you want to do business with Japanese partner, this book is a must to read.
Historical.......2003-03-03
Most American businesses no longer worry so much about the Japanese miracle. International focus has moved from Japan to China and back to Europe. Many Japanese companies are now looking to the US for recapitalization and management assistance.
So why is a book on Japanese management techniques still so relevant?
First of all, continuous improvement and lean manufacturing have become universal management tools, not strictly limited to one country. This book presents as good an introduction to the subject as any. With today's focus on execution, this topic are becoming even more current. (Dare I say topical?)
Additionally, understanding continuous improvement is still important in the context of broader corporate change. What are the strength and limitations of incremental changes versus more radical corporate moves? Read the book and learn more.
This book certainly won't turn a mediocre manager into a great leader, but Kaizen is a useful addition to the toolbox of any manager.
