Book Description
In a biography essay the author describes Hunt as a man of contradictions:both an ardent animal lover and a hunter; someone who felt at home in the woods yet lived most of his life in suburban New York.
Customer Reviews:
Lynn Bogue Hunt: A Sporting Life.......2007-07-14
Very interesting information on an excellent wildlife artist that is not well known outside of the sporting community.
Solid bio of a major outdoor artist.......2004-10-29
Kevin Shelly does a solid job portraying both the accomplishments and contradictions of outdoor artist Lynn Bogue Hunt. Shelly details Hunt's life with the precision of a journalist but also with the understanding and appreciation of a hunter. He recounts the personal situations and events of Hunt's life, not to indulge in trivial gossip but to explain the forces that shaped Hunt. Shelly documents Hunt's art, from his first illustration in Sports Afield in 1897 through hundreds more in magazines and books over 54 years. And the book's numerous color and black-and-white reproductions allow readers to experience Hunt's art for themselves. Despite Hunt's long, prolific career, few articles and no books have been written about one of the premiere outdoor artists. Shelly's clear and readable book corrects that deficiency.
Book Description
"Illustration for Designers" is a fashion drawing textbook that has been developed by Kathryn Hagen, utilizing her twenty years of experience teaching fashion drawing at the prestigious Otis School of Fashion at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. Already in its second edition, this up-to-date book contains over six hundred illustrations of various poses and garments, step-by-step drawing charts and proportion templates for flats, fashion heads and male and female figures. Fashion poses are analyzed anatomically and structurally, and include a variety of ethnicities, age groups and attitudes. An easy to read text provides important hints for rendering fabrics, developing effective compositions, understanding historical context and developing drawing methods that are both creative and efficient. In addition to the drawing information, the book also seeks to explain an easy approach to the design process. In the section "Designing and Illustrating a Group", the reader is taken through a ten step process that progresses from defining the customer to creating a master sheet to visualizing a final layout, and finally, to illustrating the group.
"Illustration for Designers" is suitable for use by a broad range of people, from the young teen who is interested in fashion drawing, to the fashion professional who wants to put their ideas on paper more effectively. It is being used as a textbook in a number of colleges and art high schools across the country. Teachers and students appreciate its user-friendly features that include a sturdy spiral binding [that allows the open book to lay flat], labeled tabs so different sections can be found quickly, and a detailed index for locating specific information efficiently. Educators who are interested in using "Illustration for Designers" in their classroom will also appreciate that it will be partially revised and updated every two years so that the information will remain current.

Inspirational.......2005-09-09
I loved this book. From the moment that I got it. It makes you wanna draw all day. Kathryn Hagen is an excellent artist and she gives you so much to go on. My weakest point is drawing the fashion figure, because it's somewhat different from normal figure drawing. So it would have been helpful to me if Ms. hagen could have also givin us some tips on how to make sure that everything is in proportion to what a fashion figure should be. But this book hands down is wonderful still!
Top-notch guide.......2004-07-09
This book is the ONLY complete guide to fashion illustration. Besides the lovely and numerous, current illustration examples provided, Ms. Hagen's writing style is so inviting that it makes exploring illustration at this level a pleasure. It is written to encourage individuality while outlining what are considered standards in the fashion industry and the templates provided allow even the very beginner to explore ideas and create valid and useful work quickly and efficiently.
Not bad for the money could be better.......2004-05-04
this book isn't a bad illustration book if you already know how to draw fashion but its not a good book for beginners I would suggest buying the book Fashion Sketchbook first then maybe 9 heads and then this one. This book is best used if you're a seasoned illustrator.
Great Resource for illustration.......2003-07-29
I have to admit, my weakness is sketching/illustrating and I needed help. This book has already helped me observe things about drawing I never considered about shaping eyes, prespectives of a 3/4 head turn, the stance of a figure, etc... It features stylish croquis, how to develop a good pose, and even defines words typical in the fashion industry. The book is spiral bound, looks cheap at first, but it does make it easier to keep on a particular page or section. It's also pricy, but well worth every penny.
EXCELLENT FASHION DESIGN BOOK.......2003-02-06
as a high school student, i take classes at f.i.t. hoping to go to college there next year. this book will help me on my journey. it helps you draw all different types of poses and croquis, including men, flats, heads, body parts, swimwear, pants, evening wear, casual wear, tailored garments and so much more. and for beginners, they have great crouquis you can trace as a base for your own!

Book Description
Collecting the hard-to-find six-issue run of PVP originally published by Dork Storm Press for the first time. This trade paperback includes over ten pages of dorky extras, including preliminary artwork and gaming stats to play the PvP characters in your Mutants and Masterminds d20 campaigns (from Green Ronin Publishing).
Customer Reviews:
Just hilarious!.......2004-05-18
Great collection of comics! My only peeve would be that the first of the six comics is kind of boring, but it really just sets up the characters. The other 5 are just hysterical, and parody role-playing games, the Matrix, Christmas, Cupid, and an amazingly spot-on parody of a Japanese Manga. Add to that a special section after the comics which includes some really incredible unused artwork from other artists, based on Scott's characters, and you've got a REALLY good value for less than $10.
Wonderful collection of comics.......2004-05-01
The Dork Ages is a wonderful compilation of the PVP issues before Mr. Kurtz went with Image Comics. It's funny and will ease PVP fans/new readers into a state of laughter. From an anime spoof to a matrix parody, The Dork Ages is sure to tickle the dork's funny bone.
Also watch for PVP at Large, the newest PVP volume.
Make Mine PvP.......2004-04-06
I first stumbled onto PVP as a webcomic and was instantly addicted. Obviously when The Dork Ages came out, I was excited about being able to get the Dork Storm issues in one handy trade paperback. I couldn't put it down. "Funny" doesn't do it justice. For any fan, this is a must-buy.
A good collection.......2004-04-01
This trade paperback collects the main stories from the first 6 issues of PVP that were originally published by Dork Storm Press.
I own virtually everything that Scott Kurtz has done, including the 6 original issues, and still bought this book. It's too great to miss, and great to be able to read them all at once.
The book also includes special items including art from the issues, inused art, and stats to use in playing a super-hero role-playing game using the characters.
If you like the online comic, or have never heard of it, make sure to pick this book up!
Giving Something Back.......2004-03-31
I have been reading the free comics at www.pvponline.com for a very long time now. Although Kurtz has flirted with the idea of micropayments and the like, the comic remains free. Instead, he trusts the community to support him. That is why I am getting The Dork Age.
Book Description
In witty slice-of-life vignettes and laugh-out-loud cultural riffs, Elizabeth Warner shares her divinely demented view of the world. Raised by a mild-mannered psychiatrist father and a slightly off-kilter mother, Warner opted out of the life that awaited the youth of WASP heaven (aka Philadelphia’s Main Line)–that is, to be “typically weaned, whelped, and privately schooled, whereupon you move on to the roost-and-spawn phase.”
Yet no matter how far afield she ventures–to New York to become a master junk-mail marketer or to L.A. to do a little acting–Warner can’t help but feel that sometimes she’s getting nowhere fast on “some kind of Protestant monorail to doom.”
Whether she’s spelling out the invisible word “help” on a guy’s shoulder blades during unfulfilling sex, getting out of jury duty by smearing herself with soy sauce, or convincing her mother that the words “career girl” are not her death knell, Warner proves that sometimes it doesn’t matter where you go in life–just as long as you’ve got a killer punch line.
Customer Reviews:
For someone who doesn't read much, she sure writes well! .......2006-10-24
Coming from a similar background, I could truly appreciate the author's message; her mother came across as slightly exaggerated, but recognizable enough. I will say that the financial aspect struck me as not-quite-adding-up (as it did the I.R.S. also!). Ms. Warner seems to alternately poormouth herself - there's one essay about taking a job solely because she didn't have enough money for the rent - and yet she brags about her bi-coastal real estate. Finances seemed to be no concern at all for her move to L.A.; the whole situation seemed to fall effortlessly into her lap with a great apartment and car waiting. That point aside, the book is very funny.
FOL: Fan of Liz.......2006-05-21
Yes, I am an unabashed fan of Liz's writing. No one turns a phrase like Ms. Warner. Her writing has bite and wit and never fails to entertain me. I have this book and I have read some of the same stories numerous times. One day, everyone will be in her thrall. She is every bit as insightful and entertaining as the fabulous Mr. Sedaris. Yes, she's included in my book Fired! Tales of Canned, Canceled , Downsized and Dismissed and we are friends. I fell in love with her writing and sought her out. You should too.
Hilarious!!! But now we know why he ditched her..........2005-09-11
Poor Liz. The rogue rebel in a pink headband. This brilliant, sensitive, witty force of a comedienne could offer so much more than just wisecracking irony, physical comedy and a vicious, vicious bite. Still, she's written a very funny book of monologues, and you won't be able to resist laughing out loud, especially if you grew up around a lot of money somewhere nice on the East Coast. She'd be even funnier if she'd seek the magnificent in the world and laugh when life falls short. Instead, she doesn't trust herself enough to go deeper than a cat scratch, which limits her and makes the read a little tedious. Still, it's well worth buying, reading, giving...
I Can't Stop Laughing.......2005-08-03
I am buying this book for all of my friends because they are getting tired of me calling them to read excerpts aloud to them! Everyone can relate to these great stories about overbearing family, wacky friends, and a derailed love-life. Parts of the book keep popping into my head and making me laugh out loud. This is the funniest book I have read in years.
Snorting Good Read.......2005-07-29
Rarely do I laugh out loud as I read a book on a crowded NYC subway. In fact, I thought only David Sedaris could make that happen, until Elizabeth Warner came on the scene. "Ditched" is about two worlds colliding: the last gasp of Main-Line Old-School traditionalism meets the reality of the modern urban world. But it's the way it's written that really sucked me in: "To my right two elfin girls in baby-doll tees and jeans so petite they appeared to be conducting a rape in progress...." and "... impossibly appealing men with that ruddy, Northeastern skin that wants to shout 'sun' and 'tropics' but really whispers 'gin.'" See? Funny!

All about perspective.......2003-10-01
This is neither a "companion piece" nor a "tell-all" book. Equally, it is not a flimsy paperback stapled and glued together just in time for the band's next big tour. What Denise Sullivan does write (and write well, also) is much closer to an anecdote, a souveneir, a recalled event. She avoids the trite and passionless type of "rock'n'roll" review/expose we have to endure all the time and instead lets the reader get a glimpse not so much of the band REM, but of the people that REM exerted some influence on, or the people for whom REM mattered. Reading Sullivan's book, I am reminded of how one of my closest friends and I discuss REM -- from memory, from songs, from what has been happening in our lives. This book feels like a friend.
A Necessary Companion.......2001-11-11
Unlike most "rock-n-roll" books which often pander to the lowest common denominator -- which usually is the author's own personal bias barely hidden in the text and most often the lens through which we are forced to watch the history of the band/singer unfold -- Denise Sullivan gives us something better, and frankly, more fun. "TATP" offers an original and fresh perspective on a very enigmatic yet familiar college - rock - alternative - mainstream - wacky - superstar band. This book is a must-have for both the fan and fanatic. The writing is well-done, the subject matter well-handled. While almost everyone's favorite REM song and/or album may change over time, this remains my favorite book on the band.
An informative look at R.E.M........2000-04-02
This book was excellent. It was great to get a history of what went on by people who actually were there.Recommendwd if you are a fan of Mr. Stipe and Co. or just interested in a the history of great music that shaped a scene.
Great.......1997-10-03
You can't get much better than this -- personal accounts of people who actually were there. There is just as much information to be found here as in _It Crawled from the South_. It proceeds chronologically with great detail, and feeds the REM-fact hungry reader just what he/she wants.

Customer Reviews:
Good book, especially for juggling pictures and awesome jug.......1999-12-16
First I'd like to tell you who Kit Summers is if you don't know, that right there might make you want to buy the book! I've had some contact with this guy over email. He's like really nice and has alot of motivation! He has a webpage I forget what it is, but you can look it up. He used to juggle and was getting into the extremes of juggling like 7 clubs! Then I believe he was hit buy an automobile. He was I do know in a coma like for a few years. Then he got out of the coma, relearned how to juggle. Now he teaches a juggling workshop called Juggling With Finesse also. It's a really neat workshop teaching you how juggling can benefit in so many areas and the truth it can! But, not only that, man is it addictive! It can benefit musicians, pianists get more grace at the piano, it helps improve-hand-eye coordinaton, motor vascular skills etc. If a football player learned how to juggle three footballs don't you think he would get better at catching during the big NFL game? Not only that it keeps kids out of trouble, relieves stress, the list goes on and on! And his workshop teaches you how to use juggling to help any profession if you know how to juggle or not. He'll teach you. Plus if your struggling in a juggling area he will help you with that.
Now the book: Well I've only checked this out of the library a few times I don't own it. But, since I've read it I can review it can't I? ;) It is full of some really good juggling pictures, some of the top jugglers in the business. It is somewhat outdated however The Raspyni Brothers look so young and the pictures of Anthony Gatto are like when he was 12. What is he now like 25/26? I believe it was printed sometime in the late 70's. The many, many pictures of top jugglers is what makes the book go. And there are some tricks throughout the book quite a few actually of like great diversity, like not just normal stuff juggling things like umbrellas or doing a billiarball trick. But real simplicity descriptions of how to do it, I really think you must have some knowledge of juggling and know how to juggle somewhat. But, because of that it is worth a buy for the countless great pictures and the countless of normal and not so normal ideas. Give it a try!
Incredibly conprehensive, but little instruction........1998-07-20
Kit Summers' book is perhaps the most comprehensive juggling book out there. However, while it contains photos and brief explanations of tricks, it lacks detailed, step-by-step instruction. A beginner or accomplished juggler can read about what can be attained with practice, but how to get there, he must leave up to his own devices. I am a seven ball, five club juggler and use the book as a wonderful reference tool; however, for instuction and guidence, books such as Charles Dancey's Encylopedia of Ball Juggling, Dick Franco's Three Ball Digest or Martin Probert's Four Ball Juggling as essential.
This book is an excellent guide to the art of juggling........1998-02-13
Kit Summer's Book "Juggling With Finesse" covers all aspects of Juggling, Balance, and Manipulation. Included are simple through advanced patterns for ball, club, and ring juggling as well as plate spinning, team juggling, club swinging, booking your act, and much, much more. I think that jugglers of all ages and skill levels will find this book to be extremely helpful.

You've got a hot idea for a new dot-com, and you're itching to join the folks who regularly show up on CNBC and at the Lexus dealerships in Silicon Valley. But you also know your odds of big-time success are about as long as Bill Gates's position in MSFT. What do you do? John Nesheim, an adjunct professor at Cornell's Johnson Graduate School of Management, who has personally structured over $300 million in new-venture deals, lays out the step-by-step skinny in High Tech Startup. Incorporating some two dozen case studies spanning the technology spectrum, he presents info specific to this industry that will help you get from concept to IPO. It begins with a 14-phase schedule itemizing time requirements, necessary assistance, typical participants, major costs, main risks, and desired results for each step. It then details all the critical stages (i.e., forming the company, preparing the business plan, assembling the team, dealing with venture capitalists and other funding sources). Nesheim focuses on practical strategies that should certainly improve your chances, but don't start prepping for that on-air interview with Mark Haines just yet: Only six out of 1 million high-tech ideas, he notes, ever become successful companies that go public. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
The phenomenal success of the initial public offerings (IPOs) of many new internet companies obscures the fact that fewer than six out of 1 million business plans submitted to venture capital firms will ever reach the IPO stage. Many fail, according to start-up expert John Nesheim, because the entrepreneurs did not have access to the invaluable lessons that come from studying the real-world venture experiences of successful companies. Now they do.
This revised and updated edition of Nesheim's underground Silicon Valley bestseller incorporates twenty-three case studies of successful start-ups, including tables of wealth showing how much money founders and investors realized from each venture. Acclaimed by entrepreneurs the world over, this practical handbook is filled with hard-to-find information and guidance covering every key phase of a start-up, from idea to IPO: how to create a winning business plan, how to value the firm, how venture capitalists work, how they make their money, where to find alternative sources of funding, how to select a good lawyer, and how to protect intellectual property. Nesheim aims to improve the odds of success for first-time high-tech entrepreneurs, and offers an insider's perspective from firsthand experience on one of the toughest challenges they face -- convincing venture capitalists or investment banks to provide financing.
This complete, classic reference tool is essential reading for first-time high-tech entrepreneurs, and entrepreneurs already involved in a start-up who want to increase their chances of success to rise to the top.
Download Description
Make no mistake: even with all their potential for meteoric success, high tech ventures are synonymous with high risk. Fewer than one out of every 47,000 Internet business plans submitted to venture capital firms ever reach the initial public offering (IPO) stage. Many fail because the entrepreneurs did not have access to the invaluable lessons that come from studying the real-world venture experiences of successful companies.
Now they do. The book C-Cube Microsystems President Bill O'Meara calls "a must read for all high tech entrepreneurs" has all the hard-to-find information that start-ups need to rise to the top. High Tech Start Up presents a classic, step-by-step strategy for making a solid plan and securing multi-round financing. Author John Nesheim -- a premier start-up veteran, having single-handedly structured over $300 million in new venture deals -- provides more than twenty-three case studies that reveal how readers can modify their strategies to fit their particular objectives.
Customer Reviews:
Great book for entrepreneurs considering a start-up!.......2007-09-06
Book gives a good overview of the process, timeline, and who is involved. Great insight into what venture capitalists look for, equity ownership and dilution, and how to select key advisors (i.e., attorney, banker) on the start-up team. It is an eye-opener to help you know what to expect in terms of how long it will take to get established and the likelihood of being bought out or reaching IPO. Definitely recommend.
A course on entrepreneurship .......2007-05-15
The book is slightly dated and was published at the height of the tech bubble, but don't let that detract you from picking it up - `High Tech Startup' has volumes of invaluable advice. John Nesheim covers the entire lifespan of a startup: from finding an attorney to start the company, to picking an investment banker to do an IPO. Of course, the scope of the work also limits the amount of information, but it gives you enough to find what you're missing and to continue your research. The case studies and suggestions from seasoned CEO's were especially useful - experience is cheapest second hand, and there is plenty of it in this book. `High Tech Startup' is a business course I should have taken years ago (and most school don't offer), highly recommended.
Full of information.......2007-03-23
I enjoyed this book, in face I have taken a lot of the information and put it into our business plan for a new start up. Though the information is dated it still holds... At the end of the day, business is business.
We are using it as our bible, and I will come back in a few months and tell you how our efforts go.

O verwhelming Info.......2007-01-13
The book is so informative, it so hard to stop reading when the book is fun and full of ah ha and hmm. The author give a precise info on how the start-up company can obtain VC funding. Most of the reviewer are right about their comment on this book, it should be the bible of start-up company.
Start Up Business Bible.......2006-01-30
I lead the technology center for an up and coming online payment services company. To say that High Tech Start Up has been very helpful in our growth is truly an understatement. My boss lugs around his copy of the book and constantly quotes from it, calling it his bible. The book has guided him in positioning the company in the market accordingly and has helped him in making informed decisions. I would recommend the book to anyone wanting to carve a niche in the high tech industry.
