A great book for collectors, historians, and architects.......2005-11-26
Monumental Coins by Marvin Tameanko is a wonderful book. The subject is the depiction of buildings, bridges, and other structures on ancient Greek and Roman coins. Each of the thirty-three chapters is illustrated with numerous drawings of the coins under discussion. One hundred of the coins are also supplemented on VIII plates at the end of the book. This is truly a wonderful work, Mr. Tameanko's passion for the subject definitely shines through. If you are interested in ancient coins, ancient architecture, or history than I recommend this book. It is no longer available form the publisher but can be readily found on the internet for a fraction of the cover price. $10-$20 for a wonderful hardbound book about coins is a deal no one should pass up.
A pleasure to read !.......2000-11-22
From beginning to end, I enjoyed reading this book.
Each chapter can be read on its own, as a series of articles on the subject, but going through them all, makes clear the wealth of information that can be gathered from the tiny masterpieces of art preserved on ancient coins. Buildings of all types are depicted on coins and on reconstructions; some history of the structures accompanies text.
Coins depicted alongside the text are hand drawn, something that was the standard on most early books. This allows the author to stress or fill in details that the actual photograph can't provide, and as they are in a larger size than the coins themselves I didn't have to struggle to notice them. Photographs at the end of the book (black and white, why not in color?) provide the feeling of the real size and appearance of what survives today.
So, if you are fond of ancient history, or numismatics, you'll find yourself at ease with this book. I ended looking for further information in both fields. It brought about for me a new awareness of coinage in the Roman world.

Book Description
Without the powerful potion whipped up by the Druid Getafix, Asterix and his fellow villagers would never have the strength to fight Caesar’s legions. Now Getafix has run short of rock oil, an essential ingredient in the concoction. There’s nothing left to do but have Asterix and Obelix prospect for black gold in the Middle Eastern desert. But the Roman secret agent, Dubbelosix, using his amazing folding chariot and new spy gadgets, is determined to stop them.

Asterix and Obelix Hunt go prospecting!.......2007-04-13
Albert Uderzo, Asterix and the Black Gold (Dargaud, 1981)
Ekonomikrisis the merchant has landed at the indomitable Gaulish village, but he's fresh out of rock oil, which Getafix needs to make his magic potion. Asterix and Obelix to another globe-trotting rescue! This time the pair are headed for Mesopotamia, along with the help of Roman-Agent-disguised-as-a-druid Dubbelosix (who bears a remarkable resemblance to a young Sean Connery. These artists are crazy!). There's a great deal of Biblical messing-about, some James Bond punnery, and a good time is had by all (save, of course, the Romans). ***
What Do Tintin and Asterix Have in Common? Black Gold.......2003-02-07
If you read Tintin, you will be aware of one adventure titled 'The Land of Black Gold'. Asterix also has to travel to the land of black gold - oil - so Getafix can continue to make his magic potion. One of the few adventures where we get to know what goes into that fabled magic potion - at least one ingredient!
This adventure is also well worth a read (no, multiple reads) for its send up of 007 and Sean Connery! Seriously, read it to believe it.
There is not much action with the romans, at least not the ones in Gaul - you get so used to them being pummelled in every adventure that when it doesn't happen you actually miss it!

Asterix in the Middle East.......2002-07-30
First published in French in 1981, as L'Odyssée dýAstérix, Asterix and the Black Gold, was first published in English in 1982.
Julius Caesar, at the advice of his spymaster M Surreptitius, dispatches the villainous Druid, Dubbelosix, as a spy, to finally destroy the Gaullish village that has become the bane of his life.
Meanwhile, it happens that the Druid Getafix is right out of rock oil, which is a vital ingredient of the magic potion. So Asterix and Obelix se t out for Mesopotamia with Phoenician merchant, Ekonomikrisis, who our friends met in ýAsterix the Gladiatorý, and unfortunately also, with Dubbelosix.
Their search for rock oil takes them past the coast of Phoenicia, where they come under fire, and to Judea (where they enjoy the hospitality of the only people who have ever to this day been indigenous to that land, the Jews), and sleep over at a little stable in Bethlehem. Then it is into the desert where they get caught in the crossfire of the Akkadians, Hittites, Assyrians and Medes, who are all at war with each other.
After that they have to face the heat and thirst of the desert, in their search.
Dubbelosix is something of a parody of James Bond (and looks like Sean Connery) Perhaps the French author Uderzo, wanted to poke a little fun of this British national hero.
But then he also covers up his evil plans evil plans by pretending to be dedicated to helping the weak and helpless ý which we know was the typical ploy of the Communists in the 20th century and still is today. So what we have here is a mix between Lenin and 007, in the character of Dubbelosix. Asterix albums have a lot of parody and satire in them, which is only apparent to older readers.
After the rather weak ýAsterix and the Great Divideý which was the first Asterix book written solely by Uderzo, ýAsterix and the Black Goldý, is a superb example that like Goscinny, Uderzo too knew how to write good comic scripts.
Asterix is the best!.......2001-03-06
Asterix is a traditional French comic tale, depicting early life with the romans in a funny way. This particular story is certain to be cherished by all that read it! It may not be well known, but it's funnier than some of the other stories that are about a little kid.Asterix is probabaly for the slightly older audience.[10-as long as you can read it]It is funny and at the same time, wild in every imaginable way.
A review by Mr. Entertainment Lover.......1999-08-06
Out of all Asterix books this is a must get. When Getafix runs out of oil (an ingredient for the magic potion) Asterix and Obelix must travel to Asia to get some. However a Roman spy is on their trail (who looks like sean Connery and acts like him) to find out the ingredients of the potion for Julius Caesar. One of the most funny things about this book is that it contains some Bible references to it. Read it and you'll love it!
Funny with a good plot.......1998-01-26
The book was a lot of fun to read, especially when Dogmatix barks at Obelix in the Dead Sea.

Not bad........2007-05-12
Albert Uderzo, Asterix and the Actress (Dargaud, 2001)
Caesar's newest plan to conquer the indomitable Gaulish village: get an actress to impersonate Panacea, with whom Obelix is in love. It doesn't help matters that the boys' mothers are in town and trying to convince the two of them to get married (to women, not to each other). The fact that Panacea is already married doesn't seem to cross anyone's mind (except that of Tragicomix, her husband). This one was definitely a breath of fresh air after Asterix and the Secret Weapon and Asterix and the Falling Sky (yes, I'm reading them out of order). ***
Golden Caesar.......2007-03-06
Missed "Asterix and the Actress" when it came out. Pretty surprised reading it. Enjoyed it for the humour, the introduction of new characters & the exploration of Goscinny-era ones.
Asterix #31 (2001)
Asterix and Obelix are after the village folk, they've gone missing. Pompey is after Obelix, he's got Pompey's helmet. Julius Caesar is after Pompey, he can't stand rebellion in his empire. No girls are after Asterix and Obelix, though their Mums preferred if there were.
Midst of this comes Panacea. She's got memory loss & only can remember Obelix...
Gotten a low ranking so far. Sort of see why. Seems to work best as a stand alone story, set aside from the series, but knowledge of the past of the series is needed for gags & such. That's the trouble, I think. Fans who love Goscinny's humour from the 1960-70s seem to be the one's it's aimed at, seems so from the references, yet the humour is sparser & not quite the sort Goscinny fans enjoy. Reminds me more of Beano & of the movie "Asterix & Obelix Versus Caesar" (1999)
Asterix and the Actress.......2006-02-26
This book was written by the illustrator of the Asterix books and not the original author (who died).
He draws beautifully but his writing skills are mediocre.
Not the best one, but still enjoyable.......2003-12-09
As a child, I read all of the "classic" Asterix books in Swedish. As an adult living in the U.S., I am reading them again to my children, but this time in English. In addition, this time I am also reading the new ones, like this one, and I am still enjoying it.
My kids asked me to read this one once, and did not ask for it again after that. So I guess that is a sign it is not the best one. I can see why, the story line is not as intriguing as usual, a little hard to believe, and a little bit non-Asterix. The kids do not care for pretty cartoon women and love stories, so that should be avoided. However it was still enjoyable and funny, and worth buying and reading, just do not let this one be your first Asterix.
I find that children the age 5-13 usually really enjoy these books, not just mine. These comic books are a great way to teach children ancient history. Naturally, the adult needs to help with the differentiation between fiction and history. From these books, my kids have learned about the Roman Empire, the ancient Greeks, the Vikings, the Goths, the Phoenicians, ancient Gaul, ancient Egypt, and the ancient Mediterranean world in general.
A BIG disappointment!.......2003-04-30
I have been an avid Asterix fan almost ALL my life, I have collected pretty much all the Asterix adventures and still love and read them ALL. I think they are ALL brilliant, this is simply NOT Asterix. When I found out there was a new Asterix out there I was very excited, I was reading the other reviews and thought well just how bad can it be, this is Asterix after all... let me tell you, if you are a big fan and familiar with earlier Asterix books, do NOT buy this! It IS THAT bad! I do NOT know what these people who gave it good reviews are on about, Uderzo died a while back and Goscinny has produced some excellent Asterix since, it is not a sudden transition! Call a spade a spade, if you are over ten years old, this is just not worth it, TRUST ME!

This is the infamous response of Penn and Larose, two single guys, to The Rules (infamous in its own right). These commitment-phobic Nineties gentlemen, whose motto can best be expressed as "Trick them before they trick you," teach you how to get into a relationship ("Bite the buttons off her blouse the first time you make love") and back out again ("Bite the buttons off her blouse every time you make love"). Stop that Rules girl in her tracks -- no more lonely Saturday nights just because you called her after Wednesday!
Customer Reviews:
Late, but just on time.......2005-10-24
I guess this book came out a while ago, but I just stumbled upon it after a friend mentioned it. Anyway, it is darn near the funniest thing I've read on relationships and even helpful, in a weird sort of way. laugh out loud funny and true to the way men and women treat each other. if people were able to laugh at themselves like this book it might make the battle of the sexes less dangerous. highly recommended...for a laugh and for a first date
Very entertaining! I laughed my a@#% off!.......2002-12-24
To begin with I am a "rules girl" ( and it does work by the way :)regardless of all the remarks to the contrary- MEN DO NOT LIKE TO BE CHASED)
But I digress, this book is one of the funniest things I have read in years and it is written in good fun, after all- if a man ACTUALLY did these things he would have no love life to speak of or a very poor one. Some of the hints, however are very good- especially the "double messages" these I found helpful to use on either sex :)They do work on men, also.
I believe in getting as much info on the "enemies tactics: to better subdue them as possible- after all "all is fair in love and war" and everyone knows that one person is always in control of the relationship- I want to make sure it is me!:)
If that sounds calculating, so be it, it's better than being a doormat.
This book is hilarious!.......2002-11-29
If you're looking for a how-to-pick-up-chicks book, this isn't exactly it. In fact, this book doesn't officially exist. But it is rumored to present an attitude which one can only describe as being simultaneously warped and insightful -- in a way perhaps only a guy can appreciate.
It's not a long book, but I had a great time reading it. I was constantly looking forward to what new weird idea about women and the mating game they were going to come up with next. If you're in some rut about this subject from having been constantly exposed to all the mainstream media garbage out there, this is a book to break you out of it before it's too late (if it isn't already). But remember, the authors live in NYC, which has THE most favorable male-to-female ratio (for guys at least) of any city in the country... so you may not be able to get away with quite as flippant an attitude as they present here.
But, yea, I really liked The Code -- I mean, where else can you get a couple of hours of side-splitting entertainment for the dollar or two a used copy costs around here? And learn how not to be a total chump and/or keep women from converting you from the prince you are into the frog they want and like. I think it may be the single best book presenting the contemporary male view against marriage which doesn't get into law, public policy, and all that Really Important stuff. (Drop me a line if you know of another good one...) Now I know what Really Important Thing to look for in a girl before I consider marrying her. Get a copy for yourself and buy several more for your best non-female friends.
Decent.......2002-02-25
This book was a tolerable way to spend a few hours, and a moderately good send-up of the whole self-help industry. (Chapter 1 was particular effective in getting across the "Live the book, breathe the book" tone of "The Rules"). But it is worth pointing out (particularly for the "007" reviewer who seemed to think this book was tops) that it IS meant to be humorous! Take this book seriously, and you will not only completely ruin any love life you had, but be exposed to any familiar with it as a major fool! Good for those who may be tempted to take self-help books too seriously to get a sense of perspective!
Moderately amusing.......2001-05-28
Sophomoric send-up of "The Rules" in the style of National Lampoon. "The Rules" richly deserved a good send-up for its codification of double standards, manipulation, misrepresentation, and man-trapping. This isn't it.
The first few chapters are fairly amusing if you've got nothing better to do, but the humor becomes more contrived as you read on. Then it uses highbrow words while trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator, sometimes leaving the reader wondering WHAT their actual joke/point was. Nate and Lawrence are to be lauded for their efforts, but fell short of their noble goal.
"The Rules" was actually funnier - read it with an inquiring mind, then imagine the sort of unimaginative, artificial, incapable-of-independent-thought woman that believes every word it says.
Customer Reviews:
A glorious coffee table book.......2001-05-12
I picked this up several years ago when it was first published and boy am I glad I did! Anyone who knows the history of the golden age of Hollywood is well aware that MGM waqs the top studio with the most glamorous, mythical stars like Greta Garbo, Clark Gable, Joan Crawford, and others. It offers rare and beautiful photos from the silent era and its beginnings all the way to 1959. Includes gossipy tidbits and much more! I hope they bring this book back on the market!
FOR THE BIGGEST FILM BUFFS AND ARDENT FANS OF MGM STARS!.......2000-09-03
This book is absolutely packed with "more stars than there are in the heavens," and the resquisite tidbits on the Hollywood of the '30's, '40's, and '50's. It is an incredible, engrossing, and exhilirating ride through the golden years at MGM, told with affectionate and interesting text and glowing behind-the-scenes photos. Stars and directors share memories and experiences of their years being heralded by the roar of Leo the Lion. The book hails MGM's (and probably Hollywood's) greatest works, such as 'Gone With the Wind', 'The Wizard of Oz', 'Meet Me In St. Louis', 'Annie Get Your Gun', 'Singin' In The Rain' and 'Gigi' among them. There are special dedications to several stars such as Fred Astaire: "Astaire's Women", Gene Kelly: "The Genius Of Gene Kelly", and Judy Garland: "The Biggest Thing To Happen To The MGM Musical". You won't be able to skim through this one. If the text doesn't hook you, the vibrant photos will. It's a walk back through three magical decades sprinkled with nostalgia and wonderful memories. "What a glorious feelin'"... to go "off to see the wizard" again, and also revisit all the beauty and grandeur of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and what it will always stand for: Art for art's sake... and the greatest entertainment that will EVER be.
Beautiful!.......1999-05-21
I purchased this book after seeing the FANTASTIC documentary of the same name on telivision. This book has some of the most fabulous photos I have ever seen from the Golden age of Hollywood and I highly recommend it (and the documentary, also, which is often featured on TNT) to anyone who has any interest in that era. The book is intersting reading, also, but nothing compares to those photos.

It was the dream factory to end all dream factories, the motion picture studio that claimed to have "more stars than there are in heaven" among its assets. Metro-Golden-Mayer's day in the sun is but a memory now and Leo the Lion is no longer king of the movie jungle, but the glory that was MGM is recalled with style in a stunning volume. While there are plenty of photographs of your favorite stars in action, the behind-the-scenes stills of directors and technicians at work--seldom if ever published--are the gems of this lavishly illustrated compilation.

Customer Reviews:
Really fun!.......2003-11-30
This is such a fun book - the artwork that decorates every page is terrific, the writing style is fun, and while I've only played with a few recipes so far - I can definitely say so far so good! The book opens with an intro to faeries, the flowers of faeries, and essential oils. The it gets to drying flowers/herbs (I actually buy mine but plan to expand the gardens next spring so I might be doing some rdying next summer). There's general info on making potpourri in here like using fixatives to keep the scents etc. Then there's a great one-pager that lists the different plants and the type of scent they have so you can be creative if you want too. The recipes comprise the rest of the book and they have great names like "christmas magic", "dance of the morning nymphs" etc. On the facing page to each recipe is a little text of faerie lore pertaining to different plants that were used in the recipe. The recipes are broken out by season so as you welcome the changes of the year you can make a corresponding potpourri. The results are pretty and smell nice too.
a bit of a waste.......2003-04-04
the book is just a bit too cutesy, and doesn't really fit in any category. It is certainly not a guide to scent or perfume blending, nor is it a book about aromatherapy. I regret spending the money on it, and plan to offer it used for the price of shipping.
Even if you don't believe in fairies.............2001-05-27
This is a colorful little book packed with numerous (fairy friendly) recipes for enchanting creations. Lovely as a coffee table book and also makes a great gift for your crafty friends. I can't wait to try all of her ideas!

Linda Gannon's "Creating Fairy Garden Fragrances" takes you on a mystical and highly creative journey in which you not only learn about concocting some very enticing aromas, but you also are gifted with her enchanting presentation on the mystery and history of herbal/flower folklore. For those of us who love flowers and herbs and dabs of magic, this is one extraordinary book! I am planning to buy a number of copies for Christmas presents -- and along with the book I am going to give a bag of homemade potpourri using one (or many!) of Linda's recipes for magical scents! In this world of zany schedules, high technology, electronic wizardry and impersonalization, this book brings us back to something warm, cozy and just darn wonderful. My congratulations to Linda, the Fairy Queen, on this this lovely, colorful and Beaituiflly illustrated book. She has surely touched us all with her sincere magic in "Creating Fairy Garden Fragrances!"

Powerful tool for building a consistent hiring process that works for you!.......2007-04-20
This book provides you with 45 effective strategies that you can pick and choose from to develop a hiring methodology that YOU feel comfortable with and WORKS FOR YOU. I just got off the phone with a friend that I hired several years ago as a sales rep who is now recruiting and managing a sales force at another company. I told him that if he could only read one book on interviewing, this was the one. In close to 20 years of hiring salespeople, this is the most practical and useful book that I've encountered. The content is great and I enjoyed the writing style and the aesthetics of the book as well. It's a fun, interesting and rewarding read!
People are not losers, Attitudes and Behaviors are........2007-03-24
I believe that any author who would catagorize people as being losers, is a part of the problem and not the solution. God would not want us to ever give up on our fellow human beings; He would want us to forgive and not discard people as if we were some disposable commodity. Businesses will never survive as long as we think only about the "bottom line".
Good for people who do a few critical hires.......2005-01-20
I bought this book because it was written by a Psychiatrist and looked like a methodical, psychological approach to hiring. It is a good book, but it has some limitations.
The book is organized temporally by stages of the interview process. There are forty-five topics that present ideas for how to interview candidates at each stage. The book covers all the common interview processes, but also presents creative and original approaches that are intended to reveal personality or character. One example I really like is meeting the spouse. I have asked to go out to dinner with potential bosses and their spouses to see what kind of people they are (and they get to meet my wife, too, which has frankly been to my advantage).
Overall, the strategies presented are good, but many people would say they are too time consuming for use in hiring a lot of people. I would be surprised if a Fortune 500 company used the complete strategy for routine hires. But most of us are not hiring a lot of people, so that is not an excuse for not using good ideas. Hiring key people, such as executives, should be a methodical and careful process. So should hiring just one programmer to add to your six person team.
I have two concerns about the strategies presented. The first is that foreign-born people may respond differently than expected to psychological things. For example, if you ask some people the meaning of the phrase "People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones," they will misunderstand the question because it is culturally linked. By the same token, one question in the book abstractly described playing the game Monopoly, but some people would not understand because they know nothing about parlor games. Because of America's rapidly growing multi-culturalism, I am hesitant to employ some of these strategies.
The other danger of being too sophisticated is that we may reach beyond our qualifications to interpret the results. I would be very interested in employing the services of Dr. Mornell to interview an executive candidate since he is an experienced and knowledgeable Psychiatrist. I would be wary of trying to draw too many conclusions myself about the psychological make-up of a candidate. It is also true that a certain amount of finesse and talent is needed or else you will not get meaningful results.
The approach presented in this book is intellectual and requires a great deal of effort. If you are looking for an easy road to hiring great people, I wish you luck, but this book isn't it anyway. If you have the time and determination to implement these ideas, you might get good results with the caveats I pointed out above. I can say that I certainly enjoyed reading the book and got some great ideas from it.
Great ideas, sketchy writing.......2004-07-08
If you're looking for ideas about how to extend, deepen, or accelerate an existing hiring process, this book is full of excellent ideas. The author clearly has considerably experience and if you follow his advice and pick the techniques that best match you and your organization you'll find the book helpful.
However, if you're looking for an introduction to hiring practices or interviewing in general, look elsewhere. The anecdotes are compelling but disconnected--use this as a source book.
Simply a "Must-Read" Tool for Employeers.......2003-08-24
Hiring Smart is an exceptional "must-read" tool for any hiring manager... and anyone looking for a job. In today's world when hiring poorly can lead to expensive mistakes, it is more important now than ever to get the "right" person in an organization.
Hiring Smart is simply one of the best tools around for hiring employees. It is original and excellent - I cannot recommend it enough.
