Munakata Shiko, born the son of a poor blacksmith from northern Japan, is considered one of the greatest Japanese artists of the twentieth century. He first became known on the international scene when he won prizes for his woodcuts at the Sao Paulo Biennale (1955) and the Venice Biennale (1956). Munakata revolutionized the concept of the woodblock print, liberating it from the small-scale traditional ukiyo-e format and creating large-size pieces for screens and wall murals.

This volume is the first dual language (English and Japanese) publication to present Munakata's works in all media and genres—woodcuts, watercolors, oil paintings, calligraphy, and ceramics. Through this comprehensive collection of more than 350 works, all illustrated in full color, can be seen the extraordinary range of styles and techniques used by Japan's most renowned twentieth-century artist throughout his career, from his woodcuts of the 1930s to his oil paintings of the 1970s. In addition, each of Munakata's breathtaking and vibrantly colorful creations is individually described in detail. Also included are scholarly essays about Munakata's life as a woodcut print artist, his calligraphy, the literary sources that inspired many of his prints, and his foray into lithography, as well as a lengthy biography that draws on many of Munakata's own writings and a chronology that describes each milestone of Munakata's eventful artistic life.

This catalogue accompanies the first large-scale comprehensive retrospective of Munakata's work to be held in the United States, at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The prints, calligraphies, paintings, and ceramics in the exhibition were borrowed from the holdings of the Munakata Museum in Kamakura, Japan, a foundation established in the artist's residence and studio after his death. The exhibition and catalogue celebrate the centennial of the artist's birth.

Good book for General Knowledge.......2007-02-08

The book provided me with some great general knowledge and actually helped me diagnose my injuries/little pains. I felt however his treatment methods were quite simple and repetitive. I believe in some more alternative methods to ailments sometimes. Chiropractic care can be beneficial,but the author stuck to conventional rest/ice/physical therapy/surgery fixes on all ailments. A bit disappointed in that, but overall worth the money and time spent.

Dr. Divot and the Older (gasp!) Female Golfer.......2005-01-21

Having taken up golf again once my son had grown, I quickly realized that I was not in the physical shape of the 20 year old I had been when I first started playing in college. After my first injury to my elbow and a badly strained shoulder, I started looking around for a book that would help me with conditioning, preventing injuries and counsel me if (please, no!) this happened once again. At this point I had had enough of physical therapy, MRIs, etc. and didn't wish to injure myself further.

In his book Dr. Divot addresses in two of his chapters The Female Golfer and The Older Golfer -- just made for me, although I have trouble admitting the latter. Over this winter I'm even trying out some of his conditioning exercises in the hope of beginning the golf season stronger and less prone to injury.

I gave copies of his book as gifts to my golf group this past Christmas -- we're all female golfers, but not all of us will admit to being older. We'll see how we do in the Spring.

These incouragable fellows have done it again! An exceptional representaion of this impish decade is presented in a masterful manner by Peter Thomas and Frank. My temples almost imploded due to laughter when I read Peter Thomas' justification of the "Lompom Twins". I also almost seared myself after reading the "Ode to Russ" and all its colossal wisdom. No human could expand on this phenomenon as well as Peter Thomas and Frank. Kudos my green friends! Keep up the great work.

Bumbling Fun!.......2000-08-04

I had so much fun reading this book that I got a hernia! Peter Thomas and Frank present their wizadry in such a way that one could never mistake them for proprietors. They suckle the "teets" of the 80's cow until only powdered milk would resolve their finance. Undeniably, the highlight of this book is when Peter Thomas takes his shot at the musty moguls known as the "Lompom Twins"! Boy, did I laugh!

This book is tremendously funny. I love Peter Thomas and Frank's candid approach towards the uninspiring decade that we know as the eighties. This book helped me get through a couple of tough years upstate at Elmira State Penitentiary. Since, I've been released, I've gained a new perspective on life and have Peter Thomas and Frank to thank. You good men have made a better man out of me through levity and humor. At first, the days were long and dreary but when my C.O. lent me that book, the days became brighter. I needed to keep it!

If you like Pete Seeger (and who doesn't?), you'll like this overview of the folk scene from someone who was and is well and truly at the heart of it it.

The book takes the form of a pleasant, almost feelgood ramble through Pete's life, with lots of photos and play-it-yourself music (traditional, his own, Woody Guthrie's..) sprinkled throughout. Overall, it makes a very rewarding read.

Greatest Authority of the Game - Wonderful, Wonderful.......1999-02-16

John Scarne is the master when it comes to all types of gambling. If you want to learn the best way of understanding what the true "odds" of the game are, read his books. He goes into detail about how people cheat at the games and what to do. His argument about different methods of play are very accurate in showing you how you will eventially lose. I have always played the game using the "true odds" and have managed to come out a winner. His presentation of using money management is very important and "MUST" be considered whenever you play. I would highly recommend this book to my friends.

This is a great book for knowing what is a good bet and what is not a good bet. For example, regarding the Crap Table, Scarne gives you the house percentage (P.C.)that is against you for every bet. He also gives you the odds for any type of roll or bet.

I learned how to play casino craps with this book and would recommend it to anyone. It is very factual and informative....Combinations and Ways table is one of the best features of the book.

A Good Book. .......2006-07-13

I always enjoy reading books on the venture industry written by professionals with practical expereince because the others are usually do not add much insight. However, not all industry experts write insightful books, but this is an exception. However, the price is a bit steep for less than 400 pages.

I would have given this book the highest rating but "The Startup Company Bible for Entrepreneurs" is the best book in my opinion. It is not only for entrepreneurs but VCs and anyone else who wants to gain an in-depth understanding of te venture capital industry and process. It may even be too advanced for some entrepreneurs but if you want to understand and do it right, look no further! Be warned: its 600 pages

These two books would go great together because they are both advanced and very insightful, unlike most of the other books on the subject.

Great Resource.......2006-05-04

Mssrs. Meyer and Mathonet have produced a valuable resource for building and managing a portfolio of venture capital and private equity funds. The book demystifies private equity investing, and presents a quantitative and qualitative approach to the fund selection process. It has been a key resource in the development of our fund, and we reference it often. This book is great for institutional investors, and should be on the shelf of academics as well.

Comprehensive and detailed introduction into the world of PE funds-of-funds.......2005-08-19

This is certainly the best book I found on the modelling and managing of risk for funds-of-funds in private equity. It contains a lot of hints on the currently evolving literature on PE funds-of-funds and describes a complete and integrated approach on how to measure, monitor and manage values and associated risks.

Beyond being the perfect starting point to learn more about this growing market segment, it also provides a lot of input to the practitioner who up to now has not been aware of pragmatic & efficient risk and rating (scoring) models for such funds. While some of the newer papers from academics rather aimed at details or were sometimes exaggeratly sophisticated, this books combines best-practice from theory and practice.
