Book Description
Answering key questions in the study of how museums communicate, Louise Ravelli provides a set of frameworks to investigate the complexities of communication in museums:
* What is an appropriate level of complexity for a written label?
* Why do some choice in language make a more direct relation to visitors?
* Is there a correct way of presenting a particular view of content?
* How do design practices contribute to the overall meanings being made?
The frameworks enhances the way we critically analyze and understand museums text, both in the sense of conventional written texts in museums and in an expanded sense of the museum as a whole operating as a communicative text.
Using a wide range of examples to demonstrate that all communication needs to be understood in relation to its social context, Ravelli argues that communication contributes fundamentally to what a museum is, who it relates to and what it stands for.
Not only museum studies and communications studies students, but also professionals in the field will find Museum Texts an indispensable guide on communication frameworks.

A review for an unreviewed classic.......2006-12-28
This is one of the most beautiful knitting books I've encountered, but it seems not to be well known. There are all kinds of details about finishing touches and short-cuts that are rarely found in a book that is accessible to a beginner. The sweater designs are unusually attractive and are of the kind that should appeal to people who are also fond of embroidery. (I bought my copy through Amazon a while ago but noticed that this book is out of print and there were no reviews.)

funniest ever.......2005-02-06
great book just to have around to make you laugh on a day when nothing seems funny--if you don't laugh at this, then nothing will ever cheer you up again.
Pushy Pussies.......2004-11-26
Those of us who love our kitties to an almost "nutty" degree will appreciate the territorial cats depicted here!
Another book with humorous cats worth having is Henry Beard's "French For Cats: All the French Your Cat Will Ever Need."
A Must for Cat People.......2003-03-03
If you're a cat owner, or should I say if you are owned by a cat... :) This book is for you. I think only cat people will understand the humour in this book. It's a really short read but you'll probably find yourself nodding your head in agreement many, many times.
How often have you tried to read the newspaper or eat dinner in peace only to have kitty stalking you. You know what I mean. This book tells it from the cat's point of view. They try to tell you that they are so hard done by... as if. Read the book and you'll know what I mean.
My favorite gift for new cat owners . . ........2002-02-01
I love giving this little book to new cat owners, especially ones who are first-time cat folk. Nicole Hollander's "Sylvia" cartoons have long been favorites of mine, and she turns her attention and talent to astutely describing life with our furry purry friends.
Her cartoons are hilarious -- just the right combination of "in your face" humor and subtlety -- and the text consisting of essays and "quizzes" is wonderfully funny. Anyone who has ever lived with a cat will see something they recognize: the finicky eater, strange cat habits in the bathroom, cats and vets, what cats do while we're away at work. There's even a "Dear Abby"-like column running throughout the book, offering "helpful" advice to "reader" questions.
Yes, Nicole Hollander has nailed the feline mystique cold. You'll love it.
One of the Best.......2002-01-03
One of the best funny little books I've seen in a long time. Cat keepers will love it and cat lovers will see snippets of their own furry babies in these pages. This creator of "Sylvia" must sometimes sneak into my house and spy on my cats. I read this one often, and it always makes me laugh. All my cat keeping friends got this for Christmas. This one is a keeper.
Book Description
"Edmund Gwenn, the famous actor, observed 'Dying is easy. Comedy is difficult.' Well, any comic will tell you, comedy about dying is really hard. But necessary. For what greater triumph of the human spirit exists than to defiantly mock the grinning reaper, specter of our darkest fears? 'Hey Death--is that a sickle in your hand or are you just glad to see me?'" -- by Anita Wise, stand up comedian/writer who has appeared on the "Tonight Show" and "Seinfeld."
That passage from the Foreword of the book "The Definitive Guide To Underground Humor" sets the stage by capturing the morbidly amusing essence of the succeeding pages. This book dares to explore the comical depths of death and the black humor hidden deep within us all, featuring: Quaint Quotes About Death from such people as Robin Williams, Woody Allen, Johnny Carson, Dennis Miller & Anita Wise; Funny Funeral Home Stories from anonymous funeral directors, embalmers, pall bearers, limo drivers and others who work in the funeral service industry; Hilarious Headstone Epitaphs from graveyards in different parts of the world; and Funeral-Flavored Comics from Non Sequitur & The Wizard of Id.
And who better to unearth this type of humor than someone with 122 years of service in the funeral industry in his genes. Author Edward Bergin's family has owned and/or operated funeral homes in Connecticut since the 1800s.
To those of you who might be uneasy about the idea of a book that deals with the lighter side of death, Anita Wise offers the following for you to ponder: "We enter the world crying, isn't it only fitting to leave it laughing? After all, death is not the final exit, but only a revolving door."
Customer Reviews:
Warning to the Squeamish.......2004-03-31
I agree with the reviewers who observed that familiarity with the death care industry was probably necessary to get the hilarity of this book. You need to be on a nodding acquaintance with death to get past the heebie-jeebies that most people would probably feel. But enough about them. I like the mention that we come into the world crying so we should exit laughing. Yup, that's what it's all about.
If you are in the Death Care Industry............2002-10-26
This book is pretty funny, but when I read parts I thought were particularly funny to non Death Care folks..well they just didn't see how it was humorous...
Phenomenal !!!!.......2001-12-28
This is one of the greatest books I've ever read. I personally dislike humor...unless it's morbid...or about death....or epitaphs......and this book is perfect. Ed Bergin is a wonderful writer....He looks @ death's "lighter side"....I highly recommend this book ....Some of the tales are "to die for!"...Pun so intended. Enjoy. ;) Don't be ascared...heh.
Interesting Different Kind Of Humor Book.......2001-03-13
This is an interesting, small (95 pages) book filled with funeral and related humor. It's not for everyone, but many readers will enjoy the humor as related by "funeral workers." The major topics include Quaint Quotes, Ridiculous Removals and Funeral Arrangements, Wacky Wakes, Funny Funerals, and Hilarious Headstones. There are about 120 different stories, jokes and miscellaneous included. It makes for interesting reading and can bring you some smiles. Those who are offended by humor related to death and dying will not appreciate the book. Other readers will enjoy it. It's a change from the ordinary.
Gotta be in the industry to appreciate 'Underground Humor'.......2001-02-03
Well, there have been 6 reviews of 'Underground Humor' before me. With the obvious contrast of the reviews being all or nothing. I can only speculate that those negative reviews are from persons who have never worked in the funeral industry. My wife and I are both from the death care background and we both loved it as well as many of our associates. The only friend of ours that did not appreciate the book has never been part of the funeral biz, nor does he ever want to be part of it. So go figure. Well, as I see it, if you're in the biz, you'll love it, if not, oh well..... I give it two well-embalmed thumbs up.

This is another awesome album by the king Parrothead himself.
Growing Older and Laying Down.......2001-07-16
Buffet has grown longer toes, but has not "layed down" over the years. This album took me to the Keys of Florida, back home to Alabama and back down to the islands a time or two. If anyone has ever been to the lower latitudes of the United States (Florida in particular), this compilation will take you up AND down A1A as many times as you can handle it!
Thanks for this one, JB!

Book Description
Solve crimes like a detective, find clues where nobody else would think of looking, trap suspects with their own words, and ignore facts that appear to be significant but are only distractions. Better than a police academy course, all 80 of these simple stories will show you how to find the culprit while everybody else is completely confused. You'll make your town's Christmas merrier when you find out who shot Santa Claus. Figure out which family member poisoned the man of the house while he was watching the Super Bowl, and which housekeeping staffer hid a ruby necklace in a liquor bottle in plain sight. As you explore these fascinating whodunits, you'll enter a bizarre, glamorous, and dangerous world of mobsters, millionaires and heiresses--even detectives themselves. In case you can't outwit the bad guys, just turn to a special section of solutions to each mystery, including an explanation of each clue. Sterling 352 pages, 102 b/w illus., 4 3/16 x 5 1/4.
Customer Reviews:
Great Whodunit story collections........2006-08-01
Entertaining as well as chanllenging. Something I'll keep going back to for fun.
Great Brain Book.......2006-03-10
I bought this book for my 11 year old nephew and he was so absorbed in it he almost finished all the puzzles in 2 days. He's a pretty smart kid and loves to challenge himself, so it was the perfect gift. He said some were tougher than others, but he got help from the whole family and it turned out to be a fun family event.
Excellent mini-mystery book.......2003-09-13
80 Whodunits, most 2-3 pages in length. 350 pages in total. GREAT book for the car, train, or when you just need to pass a few minutes. These mini-mysteries are challenging and clever. In the event that you try your best and still can't figure out 'whodunit', the solutions are in the back of the book. I have read this book cover to cover several times in the two years that I have had it, and I STILL find it enjoyable, despite remembering the endings to most of them.
The only drawback to this book (and I would imagine this is a trend that runs through the entire "Little Giant Book of..." series) is that the spine of the book is glued and cracks after a while, causing some pages to become loose and the book gets hard to hold onto, depending on where the spine crease develops. Despite that, this is a worthwhile purchase. I intend to purchase myself a new copy and send mine in a care package to a friend in the Armed Forces who is currently stationed in Iraq. Due to it's size and price, this would make an excellent care package item.
Hy Praise!.......2001-09-19
This is a great book. I am a math teacher always looking for resources to motivate Junior High and High School students. The students couldn't get enough of these mysteries. I wish there were about a dozen more of them. Fantastic work.
So many mysteries, so little time.......2001-08-17
You will not be disappointed by this book. Conrad knows how to entertain and intrigue you without confusing you. You get a total of 80 mysteries for you to solve. Each one more interesting than the previous one. You deal with murderers, thieves, kidnappers, as well as rebel forces. Match your wits against them and see if you can beat them at their own game. Go ahead and buy it, you'll be glad you did.

Very fast, superve conditions.......2007-06-08
I strickly recommend this shop: just 10 days to Barcelona and new!
Difficult to use, disorganized.......2007-04-12
I used this book for an MBA finance class but I am not keeping it as a reference. I felt it was convoluted and badly organized. It was difficult to look up subjects using the index when you wanted to just crack the book and find a formula or look for something specific. Since that's what I would do if I kept the book as a reference, the value for me is not there. I'm looking for a different book that is better organized and easier to understand for my reference book.
Thanks you.......2007-02-12
I got the book right away and it is still in perfect condition. I am absolutely satify with market order. Thanks you so much.

This is a review of only the CD - i.e., Excel model.......2006-03-28
Let me say that I like the McKinsey model and use it a lot to value certain companies. Overall, I found that the Results section of the model really helped me understand the detailed nuances of the McKinsey model, especially given that the book itself is sometimes vague.
I gave the CD product 4 stars, instead of 5 stars, because I felt that:
1) The PDF instructional manual on using the model is woefully inadequate.
2) There were a few serious errors in the model.
3) The model took the easy way out on a lot of difficult valuation items.
1. The PDF manual is woefully inadequate. Reading it, you think the model is self-explanatory, but it really isn't. You have to really study the numbers to understand what assumptions the model wants you to make. In this regard, the book is marginally helpful, the examples in the book is slightly more helpful. In many cases, I had to turn to other valuation texts to figure out a few things.
2. The model is for the most part, error-free. But I did catch two calculation errors that I will share, so that others can avoid the pain. First, in the Forecast Drivers tab, there is a data row called Capex. It looks back at the optional Capital Expenditure line as an off-balance sheet item in 'Historical Data.' This is inconsistent with the book's data driven approach and specification that CapEx = change in Net PPE + Depreciation. You may want to recorrect the Capex formula to specify this. Why the model asks us to manually specify the Capital Expenditures in Historical Data, I have no idea.
Another error I saw is in the Results tab. In the Ratios section, there is one called 'Enterprise value / EBITA'. If you look at the formula, it points to EBIT. You need to correct this by having it point to Reported EBITA.
3. I think the model takes the easy way out on a lot of the most difficult items. For example, the book advocates treatment of R&D as a capitalized asset, and yet the model excludes this entirely. The book advocates dealing with the market value of debt, but the model just incorporates the book value of debt. The model leaves as an entry item the value of the lease as a balance sheet item, when it you could easily just as well incorporate extensions to model this. This is the same for options, convertible debt, customer receivables, unutilized/discontinued assets, etc.
Basically, the book is aggressive in advocating a firm estimation of operational value, NOA value, and Debt/DE claims, but the model is much less ambitious.
This does not make the model useless. It's a great data-driven model. It just requires the user to build sophisticated extensions to deal with the most complicated parts. At the same time, this is no cheap model. They are probably making lots of money on it. I would have expected the folks at McKinsey to provide extensions to handle the most complicated aspects of valuation, in addition to the core items.

Valuation Workbook (3rd edition).......2005-10-25
I was hoping the workbook would have more practice exercises revloving around the manipulation of financial statements. Instead, it was heavily multiple choice and short answer questions. Not exactly helpful for someone trying to learn by practice instead of information memorization.
Excellent Companion!.......2001-01-09
This workbook is a great companion to the bestselling Valuation book by McKinsey. A well organized resource that includes exercises and Q&A. The basic principle allows you to self-test your information and knowledge base. Understanding the valuation process can be challenging at times. This workbook is a great tool to help guide you through the process. I also use it as a quick reference problem solver.
Don't bother--save your money!.......2000-12-20
I had given 5 stars to "Valuation," but I feel that this workbook is practically useless for its price. The problems in this book are not very challenging; they merely require echoed answers instead of questions providing in-depth analysis. Common questions include: "Name three issues in valuating X company" or "Name three reasons why X is preferred over B." These are simple questions one could easily answer by taking copious notes. I had expected much more challenging questions from the workbook, but I was sorely disappointed. My advice: Buy "Valuation" but avoid buying this book.
