This book is all right........2001-08-28
As a seasoned life drawing artist, I felt obliged to write a review of this book, considering it has been highly rated in the other review. This book is all right for its price, but far from excellent despite the fact that works were done by the old masters. The reason, I think, is most of these drawings were done to serve as preliminary studies for oil painting projects by the old masters. Readers have a chance to see the works of the old masters to, as in my case, be inspired by the fact that excellence is a reachable commitment to any of us. I have seen better.
old master life drawings.......2000-05-19
This book is an excellent and accessible resource for students. It has clear reproductions to analyze and draw from at a very low price. While, the entire genre of master drawings can scarcely be touched with only 44 plates, a nice selection of drawings has been chosen. I recommend it for anyone beginning their collection of fine art books, students, or someone who wants to give the subject a try without blowing a bundle on an art book. An excellent resource!

An excellent series.......2005-07-26
Scryed (2001.)
INTRODUCTION:
In the last few years, animes and mangas have become increasingly popular in America. The Japanese have a style of animation unlike anyone elses - a style that can fuse seriousness and comedy is a way American animators can only dream of. And above all, anime can appeal to people of all ages - NOT just children. One of the more interesting anime/manga series to come along in recent years is Scryed. Although this series is relatively unknown in America, it has been released here, and is one of the most unique series around. Is its uniqueness a good thing? Read on for my review of Scryed.
OVERVIEW:
(This series has a tough storyline to describe, so bear with me here!) Roughly two decades ago, a region of the world was ravaged by an unknown seismic force. The effects of this seismic occurence, oddly enough, resulted in residents of this now-ravaged area to gain supernatural abilities. These powers are used by various people for various purposes - some use them to uphold the law, others use them to bring pain and suffering to the world. No two powers are exactly alike, and each one brings its users unique abilities no one else has. The conflict between the opposing sides has been raging for years and shows no signs of letting down.
REVIEW:
Overall, I am extremely satisfied with this series. It seems like lately I've been discovering a number of excellent animes and mangas, and Scryed definitely has to be somewhere near the top. The creator of the series succeeds beautifully in creating characters who are three-dimensional and well-developed. It's an emotional, unique, action-packed story you won't get from any other series. The only complaint I have is the one I have with most animes/mangas/movies - too many characters are introduced too fast, and it's kind of hard to keep track of them all. Accordingly, you may find yourself doing a lot of rereading just to see who's who. I personally recommend the manga over the anime, since there is more character development and a better story. Either way, check it out if you want action.
EDITION NOTES:
Currently there is only one edition of this manga available in America, and it's a good version. This was released here under the Tokyo Pop company, so it's an authentic manga-style book that reads from right to left. Reading from right to left may be a pain at first, but you'll get used to it real fast. Although it's confusing at first, I commend Tokyo Pop for keeping the series as true to the original version as possbile.
OVERALL:
Scryed is nothing short of excellent. If you want action, suspense, drama, and pretty much everything in between, this series will serve it up and then some. There's not a whole lot else that needs to be said. If you want to experience one of the best action series out there and all the mainstream ones disappoint, Scryed is just what you need.

APHC Final Performance - a masterpiece and maybe the best.......2006-11-20
This was intended to be Keillor's last show in 1991. It was not, to a lot of people's great relief. First there is the music - if ever there was a recording to match the guitar work of Chet Atkins and Leo Kotke in 'Sleepwalk' I've yet to hear it. The songs Keillor sings, sad songs, beautiful songs of endings and parting will break you heart. The last episode of the 'News from Lake Wobegon' is just astounding. You cannot miss the tone of a man saying goodby to a lifetime. The humor is what it always was, just plain wonderful. If you've got to leave, didn't want to, hoped you would come back you will hear it all here. Parhaps the finest show he's ever done.
SO beautiful, it'll make you cry........2000-04-11
Keillor outdoes himself with this extra-long show. An artifact, a historical document, and a labor of love.

Adventures, written by Rudolph Erich Raspe in 1785, became an instant best-seller, and was hailed as a comic sensation in the satirical spirit of Gulliver's Travels and Tom Jones. Terry Gilliam has now resurrected the Baron and his comrades in entirely new adventures.
Customer Reviews:
The movie's book.......2000-06-02
"The Adventures of Baron Munchausen" has always been, in my opinion, one of Terry Gilliam's best movies. Usually known for his dark fantasy for adults, here Gilliam made a light-hearted fantasy for children, which truly is endearing. Now, Gilliam, with the help of Charles McKeown, has turned the film into a novel. One thing I liked best about the film is that it was visually beautiful. Obviously, that is missing from the book. But still, the book is written with humor and intelligence, which makes it a good read, even if you've never seen the film. It can be read both by children (who will like the adventure), and by adults (who will respect the wit). Overall, this is a warmhearted tribute to fantasy, and is recommended whether or not you've seen the film.
Book Description
The complete screenplay and credits with dozens of photos from the 1998 film. "A carnival! A wonderland! A weekend with nine Friday nights! Terry Gilliam's lavish dreams are beyond those of mere mortals." - Harlan Ellison
Customer Reviews:
Almost as Good As Seeing the Movie (but no cigar).......1999-04-01
The script to one of the classic films of the 20th century. It's facinating to see the large and minute permiatations as a script is transformed into a living, breathing movie. Only by reading the script can you get a sense of some of the chunks that had to be left out due to budget constraints.
See the movie!.......1998-03-17
I haven't read the screenplay, but it must be just as good as the movie, one of my favorite films of all time! It's a rousing fantasy/ adventure story of a group of superpowered people going on a qeust around the universe to stop a war. Exciting enough for kids, and intriguing enough for adults! See it for your own sake!

Book Description
In this user-friendly book, opening theoreticians Alexander Raetsky and Maxim Chetverik go back to basics, studying the fundamental principles of the Benoni Systems and its many variations. Throughout the book there are an abundance of notes, tips, and warnings to help improving players, while key strategies, ideas, and tactics for both sides are clearly illustrated.
Customer Reviews:
snarf the pawn!.......2006-08-12
For perhaps nationalistic reasons, the authors (who are Russian) call the Benko Gambit the Volga Gambit. Still, they cite presumably reliable sources that predate what Benko did, so maybe their name for it is more accurate.
Anyhow, the Benoni is well described for both white and black. It's not a huge tome. But the essence of best play for both sides is well documented. The book does devote a lot of time to the Volga. Very tactical positions with dangers for both sides. It does appear that white retains a precarious material advantage. But he must play very carefully.
If you are an experienced chess player and tend to favour open, tactical positions, then you might like playing the Volga as black. But as white, if you are confronted with it, you might also well take the gambit. Snarf the pawn and hang on for dear life!
The Truth of the Benoni.......2005-10-03
Let me explain something.First, the authors are really good at writing this book. They provide good knowledge of the lines and thorouly explain some of the more complicated ones. By now I can hear you screaming,"WHY DID YOU GIVE IT 2 STARS?" Well, first let me say if you are devoted to the benoni systems, and nothing can change your mind--this is the finest books on the Benoni systems ever written(keep in mind when I speak of Benoni systems,I exclude the Modern Benoni, which is not covered in this book). The reason it's 2 stars is because the Benoni systems are bad to play. Not to brag, but I am a very strong master, so I know what I'm talking about. The systems covered are The Volga (Benko) Gambit, Blumenfeld-Counter Gambit, Czech Benoni, Kings Indian Benoni, and a few others that are even worse.
The Volga Gambit is probably the best Benoni system to play but its still very risky.Let me say that if white takes the pawns that are offerd(both the b5pawn and the a6 pawn) then black has VERY good prospects. But let say that he only takes one pawn, and then when offered the a6 pawn, he declines and pushes his pawn to b6. Thats when the problems start occuring. White has a foothold in the center, while black has some on the queenside. Like I said, Its risky. Next up is the Blumenfeld-Counter Gambit. This is just bad. Statistics show that white wins 60%!!
Again whites spacial plus in this gambit proves to be decisive.
The Czech Benoni is EXTREMELY boring, the center is closed and both sides have limited plans. Black,in this opening, is considered to be very passive. The Kings Indian Benoni is bad.theres a lot of risk involved. The main thing is that white totally gets control of the center. And that is not good. The rest of the Benoni systems in the book are even worse- theres about 2 more. Let me say a few words about the Modern Benoni. This to isnt a good opening. Aagain the center is taken by white and black really gets nothing in return-this opening is really tactical. I hope I didn't discourage anyone- I am just saying it like it is. The other reviews that talk about how great the systems are, are written by inexperienced players. A great defense that offers great dynamic possibilities and with little risk is the Kinds Indian Defense. I reccommend Starting Out: The Kings Indian by Joe Gallagher. This opening battles the iniative and puts pressure on white's center. There is litle risk, mainly whits center but practice a shown that it can be demolished.
Up to now the best Starting out-volume around in my eyes!.......2005-08-31
The authors Raetzki and Chetverik - one IM and one FM as far as I know - present the whole range of Benoni-systems in this 239-pages tome which is the largest Starting Out-book so far. Please note that there are no Modern Benoni systems in this book, there is a seperate Starting out-volume on it.
Now quantity does not necessarily mean quality, but let me state that the authors really shine on every page! They deal with the Volga-gambit, the Blumenfeld, Czech and Closed Benonis, the Pseudo-Benoni as Attila Schneider calls it, the Schmidt-Benoni, Benoni-/Kings Indian-hybrids and Assorted Benonis, e.g. with the Snake. Well, the Snake does not have the brightest reputation, but that does not keep GM Miezis from playing it against the world's best players! So White players should know how to
handle the Snake and how to prevent being bitten! The authors
arm their readers with a weapon, giving even the Snake three whole games! Great! I am sure, the readers will appreciate this!
There is a lot of theory presented, new ideas and line-assessments which sometimes differ a lot from current theory! This all makes this tome really special. The writing is informative and entertaining, the chosen games are really instructive and balanced, no obvious bias towards Black or White and fun to play through! What else could you wish?
Of course, this is no complete Benoni-systems book, but it almost feels it is! So when I was browsing through the pages I was surprised to find myself really searching for missing lines and not finding any at first glance! In the end, I found one "missing" line being part of my repertoire: talking
about the line 1. d4 c5, 2. d5 e5, 3. e4 d6, 4. c4 the authors state "After 4. ...Nf6 the game will transpose to other lines" which is only partly true. They "miss" 4. ...Be7 planning the typical Be7-g5 to exchange the "bad" bishop. Palliser recommends 5. Nf3 Bg4, 6. Qa4+! with the idea of meeting 6. ...Bd7 with 7. Qb3 or e.g. 6. ...Nd7 with the also typical 7. Nf3-d2! threating f3. According to Palliser in "Play 1. d4!" White may claim a slight edge here.
This may all be true, but I am unfair to criticize the authors for that as, after all, its the best Starting Out-book I have seen so far! And they did not intend to write a complete-book on the Benoni-systems at all! So in the end, this is just another bonus as I almost felt like having such a kind of complete-book in my hands!
Conclusion: a very entertaining book, giving instructive and typical Benoni-games, original new ideas and assessements of the author's own! For everyone who plays those Benoni-systems or plays against them, this is a must-buy! Recommended for players up to Elo 2300! I could have needed 150 additional pages, but I can hardly ever get enough! ;-) Buy it!
Everything except the Modern Benoni.......2005-07-27
The most important thing you ought to know about this book is that it does NOT cover the Modern Benoni. It covers the other Benoni systems. And some of them are plenty of fun to try in a chess game, even if you are not from the town of Benoni or know anyone named Benoni (or Benjamin).
The first half of the book is spent on the Benko Gambit, which the authors insist on calling the Volga Gambit. Um, they can call it whatever they please. I'm calling it the Benko Gambit.
In any case, Raetsky and Chetverik give a good description and overview of the Benko. There are 38 complete, analyzed games of it, about a third of which are from 2000 and later. And I think everyone ought to try playing this gambit with Black a few times. It sure is easy to learn it! The ideas are fairly clear. If the Gambit is accepted, the first few moves are automatic, and you blast away at White's Queenside with both your Rooks, your Queen, your Queenside Knight, and hopefully your fianchettoed King Bishop. If you manage to clean up White's Queen Rook and Queen Knight pawns, and keep your passed c-pawn, that's typically a decisive advantage.
Oh, yes, if you have White, I'd suggest turning down the Gambit. White has good theoretical chances, but Black's moves are just too easy to find if White takes both pawns. This book has plenty of advice to give whether you take both pawns, one pawn, or none.
The rest of the book is devoted to "other" Benoni systems. There are over 30 complete, analyzed games in these chapters as well. We see the Blumenfeld Gambit, Benko/Blumenfeld hybrids, Benoni/King's Indian hybrids, Czech Benonis, Schmid Benonis, Benoni-style responses to 1 d4 Nf6 2 Nf3, and so on.
Still, maybe because I like reading the Harry Potter books, my favorite section was on the Snake. This is an unsound try by Black, and it is nearly unplayable, but I wanted to see what the book would say. And it gave it three fully analyzed games!
I've tried the Snake in a game. Basically, instead of putting a pawn on d6, you put your King Bishop there, hoping to free it via c7 and eventually exchange it for the White Knight on c3 (the path the Bishop takes is what gives this opening its name). The biggest problem with the opening is that when you move your d6 Bishop, White often can put a pawn on d6, and that tends to be lethal.
The Snake starts with the moves 1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 c5 3 d5 e6 4 Nc3 (the book also analyzes Snakes against 4 Nf3) 4...exd5 5 cxd5 Bd6. The line that gives Black the most trouble, in my opinion and in the authors' is 6 e4 0-0 7 f4. Now what?
Well, I guess one can play something like 7...Bc7 and hope to survive. With luck, you may get a continuation like 8 e5 Ne8 9 d6 Ba5 10 Bc4 Kh8 11 Be3 f6 12 Qh5 g6 13 Qh6 Ng7 14 Bxc5 fxe5 15 fxe5 Bxc3+ 16 bxc3 Qa5 17 Bd4 Nc6 18 Qd2 Nxe5 (now the worst is over and anything might happen). But nobody does that. I've seen a couple of games from strong Masters with Black. They, the book, and I all recommend the desperate sacrifice 7...Nxe4. White will play 8 Nxe4 Re8 9 Qe2. What do you do next?
The move the Masters both tried was 9...Bf8. And one of them won brilliantly. But the book says that the Black's best try (not good enough to equalize, but to at least have some chance) is 9...Na6 10 Nf3 f5 11 Nxd6 Rxe2+ 12 Bxe2 Nb4.
When I tried this line as Black, I didn't know about 9...Na6. My game went 9...Bc7 10 d6 Bxd6 11 Qc4 Bxf4 12 Bxf4 d5 13 Qxc5 Rxe4+ 14 Ne2 Qe8 15 Bxb8 Rxb8 16 Qxd5 Bg4 17 Qd2 Rd8 18 Qc2 Rc8 19 Qd2 Rc6 20 Rd1 Rce6, and Black won. So I agree with the Masters and the authors: if you get in this position, try 7...Nxe4.
I recommend this book.

Digestible Approachable Truths.......2007-05-13
I've read many books by Jim Rohn and every last one has been an excellent inspirational read. This one is no different.
There are fundamental truths that stand as unchanging foundations for success concerning human achievement. Since the beginning of time there have been men who've mastered and accepted these principles and have gone on to accomplish thier most creative visions due to the application of those principles and thier overwhelming desire to succeed. Authors have captured and written down these truths from the beginning of time-even in books such as the bible. Every approach to learning these secrets have been different due to the mindset of each generation.
Jim Rohn uncovers these priciples and sheds light on them in a simplistically refreshing way that allows for motivation towards articulating and aligning ones desires toward a worthwhile destiny. I think Jim Rohn once again does an excellent job at capturing the secret and translating it into understandable text for our consumption. I would recommend this book to anyone with an open mind willing enough to search themselves and uncover thier untapped potential.

Jim Rohn Strategies for Wealth & Happiness.......2006-08-19
This is an excellent book to teach a network marketing representative to become a better person and richer in character as well as monetarily. I recommend Jim Rohn to everyone who would like to have his/her spirit lifted and his/her character built in many ways.
Jim Rohn is a blooming genius!.......2006-03-14
I have read so many self-help books that are okay and even good, but they're all just pep-talks. This little book is absolutely riveting! After 6 pages, I was shocked, blown away, and had to stop reading and walk around to digest the simplicity and truthfulness of Mr. Rohn's ideas. This is not just another pep-talk. This book tells EXACTLY what to do to acheive your goals; broken all the way down to blocks on graph paper. If you never read another self-help book, read this one.
The Master Business Philosopher.......2006-01-13
Anthony Robbins acknowledges Jim Rohn as one of his mentors besides John Grinder (Co-developer of NLP). The essence of his training is discipline, goal setting and taking action (So do the exercises in the book!).
This book is a great read in conjunction with "You Were Born Rich" by Bob Proctor, and "Think & Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill. Rohn's books are also highly recommended by MLM Leaders from Herbalife as he's a regular trainer with them.
