Evans, like his contemporaries, the Holtzapffels, was a manufacturer of high quality lathes; but he was also an accomplished turner and, for 33 years, the author of many articles for English Mechanic, a leading journal of the time. His broad combination of engineering and practical experience, along with his literary skills, makes Ornamental Turning one of the most useful books in the field. Clearly written and richly illustrated, with over 190 detailed line drawings and 19 plates, it provides a complete coverage of the subject. Included is information available nowhere else: a chapter on DawsonUs geometric slide rest, details on the design of many types of apparatus, and a brief chapter on electrotyping. This is a complete reprint of the original 1886 edition. 344 pages. 192 line drawings, 19 half tones. 51/2" x 81/2". Soft cover.

QUIET ON THE STRIP!
Hoping to have a lot of fun and laughs with the Peanuts gang? Say no more! In this newly compiled collection, Charlie Brown and company prove that actions speak louder than words–especially since these strips contain not a word of dialogue! The hilarious adventures of Charlie Brown fumbling and stumbling around the baseball field, Lucy bossing everyone around with a glare, and Snoopy and Woodstock up to their usual high jinks–proves that in the world of Peanuts, sometimes silence is golden!
Customer Reviews:
A Nice and Unique Peanuts Book.......2005-11-04
Ballantine Books have published several Peanuts books over the past 5 years or so. Several have chronicled strips published in a given year (1995 through 1999) while their most recent efforts have focused on themes (Halloween-related strips, baseball-related strips with another book based on camp-related strips coming out next year). This book deals with strips that have no dialogue in them, which was a format used by Schulz throughout the strip's nearly 50 year run.
It is amazing how Schulz could make a point or garner a small chuckle just through the actions of his characters without nary a word spoken. This is primarily done with his strips with the animal characters (Snoopy, Woodstock and Spike), but it actually to me is more effective with his human characters. I will say one thing. The book can be read through pretty quick with all that reading!

Guaranteed To Put A Smile On Your Face.......2004-12-28
I received this book as a gift this Christmas and let me say that is was one of the funniest I have received is some time. I tend to be what some might call a political junkie and this book takes a nice shot right at the overly partisan and greatly increased sense of importance me and my fellow political geeks have placed on the differences between the Dem's and the GOP. If you are strongly in the one of two camps and have a thin skin, then you will probably only like half of this book, but if you can sit back and laugh at the extreme view of the political masses today, then this book will put a smile on your face.
The format is a two sided take off of the funny "You know you are a red neck if.." series. If I have one criticism is that the book was just too short. Thirty minutes is about all you need to read the book and I finished thinking that the author could have done so much more. For example he stayed away from jokes on any particular political figures. Then again the books gives you just what it claims, light humor that is perfect for any politically focused friend or family member. Buy it and prepare to laugh.
Both Sides Take Well-Deserved Humorous Heat.......2004-10-01
When I picked up "You Know You're a Republican/Democrat If..." I expected a collection of off-color, just the usual "I hate Bush," or "Kerry's just a rich liberal" puns. I thought, given the title, the writer, like Jeff Foxworthy in his redneck series, just picked low-hanging fruit.
It is quite witty. Some jokes are reiterations of ones heard on Leno and Letterman, redone in the "You know you're a" style, but others are current, fresh and funny.
I tried to guess the writer's political leaning, but the jokes are well-balanced. He honestly pokes fun at whatever his side is, and thoroughly jabs the other. My hat is off to him for not revealing who will get his vote.
Ironically, left side of each spread is a Republican joke, and the right side is a Democrat joke.
Some of the jokes are based on simple stereotypes, like, "You know you're a Republican if... you think Florida election officials are fair and unbiased. You know you're a Democrat if you think 'fair Florida elections' is a contradiction in terms."
Other jokes show keen wit, and understanding of the deeper philosophical differences and inadequacies between each party and their adherents, like, "You know you're a Republican if you've thought about becoming a Libertarian, but have trouble with their philosophical support of prostitution, gay marriage, and uninhibited personal freedom. You know you're a Democrat if you've thought about becoming a Libertarian, but have trouble with their support of free trade." Another: "You know you're a Republican if you prove your racial sensitivity by saying 'gracias' to your gardener. You know you're a Democrat if you're strongly committed to racial equality even if you don't personally know anyone of a different race."
Two of my favorites is, "You know you're a Republican if you're afraid of the IRS. You know you're a Democrat if you're afraid of the FBI," and "You know you're a Republican if you support George W. Bush's plan to put a man on Mars. You know you're a Democrat if you want that man to be George W. Bush."
Maybe the gem in the whole book is "You know you're a Republican if you think Colin Powell might make a good President, if he wasn't black. You know you're a Democrat if you think Colin Powell might make a good President, if he wasn't conservative."
This is a book worth stocking in the bathroom, or for reading aloud on trips. Both sides take some heat, so no will be offended.

Clever writing makes for humorous & unique book.......2004-08-13
It may not be "gut-buster" humor, but I found myself (and others) making punctuated outbursts of laughter, delight and recognition while reading through the book. It cleverly portrays the knee-jerk-stereotypes, which are so ingrained in the Republican / Democrat ideology, as to make each feel the other is getting roasted while one's own camp gets off relatively easy! If truth is in the eye of the beholder, this work shows each one of us as being oblivious to our own biases and the assumptions underlying them...which is pretty laughable!
Couldn't put it down until I was finished.......2004-08-10
Really loved this book. It was fun to look at the jabs taken at both Democrats and Republicans.. and to be honest, they both are very accurate. Democrat or Republican, you'll enjoy this book!
two party fun.......2004-07-31
Full of good laughs and some deeper jabs that stay with you. Interestingly, my wife, a Democrat, thought the writer really stuck it to the Republicans, while I, a Republican, thought he was merciless on the Democrats. That's quite a trick. You'll enjoy it. Your friends will love it. You'll find yourself marking your favorite pages so that you can read them again and share them with friends.

Macca Topples Over The Unknown Edge.......2003-07-27
Being a self-confessed 'McCartney can do no wrong' fan, more books like this would help me prove my point. Macca has always been a little more complicated than people give him credit for. His side interests have always fascinated me. The author covers some general history of the avant garde scene, enough to show you Macca just didn't dabble, and he was in rather deep. I especially enjoyed the interviews with the Fireman producer, and the member of Super Furry Animals (sorry, don't recall their names). The only complaint I have is that the author tends to jump back and forth some, but it's a rather quick read that any Macca fan should make. Another suggestion - pick up the UK edition, it has a much cooler cover.
Avant Garde isn't the word for Paul.......2003-07-20
I love Macca as much as anyone, but this entire "Avant Garde" trip he's been on the past five years has reached its limit with the publication of this book. What began with the ridiculous Barry Miles book reaches its dismal heights here. All of this is a result of Paul feeling insecure and discarded after John's death. He quite rightly decries those few cretins who proclaim, "Paul contributed nothing to the Beatles, he merely booked the studio." That balderdash is refuted by the fact that most of the Beatles truly great songs were penned solely by Paul. A list, you ask? How about Here, There and Everywhere, Yesterday, Let it Be, Eleanor Rigby, Hey Jude, For No One, to name but a few.
Paul can never attain John's status. For one thing, he's alive and John is not. Macca should count his considerable blessings that he's not a martyr and he should get over the fact that a large segment of intelligent, discerning Beatles fans will always prefer John's style and John's songs. John was the Avant Garde pioneer of the group, Paul wrote beautiful, catchy melodies. They complimented one another to a degree never seen before or since in popular music. McCartney can never win in any posthumous competition with Lennon and all of these self-serving books merely addresses his own insecurities.
I adore Paul, but enough is enough. The book is a waste of time and merely rehashes everything from the Miles book. Anyone who seriously buys into the clap-trap that the lyrics to C Moon are as great as I am the Walrus or Come Together needs to get some therapy.
A Look at Paul McCartney's 'Other' Side........2003-07-15
When it comes to the Beatles, many would say the John Lennon was the most 'avant-garde' Beatle because of his work with Yoko Ono. However, Paul McCartney was quite an 'avant-garde' Beatle as well, sometimes moreso than Lennon. During the last decade, Mccartney's experimental side has shown up more frequently with his two albums released under his Fireman pseudonymn as well as his nearly non-musical "Liverpool Sound Collage" from 2000.
In his book "The Unknown Paul McCartney", Ian Peel goes in deep to reveal a not-so-well-known side to Paul's musical personality.
It is a fascinating revelation to Paul's experiments and fascinations with avant-garde music. Many of his unusual musical experiments such as the tapeloops The Beatles "Tomorrow Never Knows" all the way up to The Fireman albums, "Liverpool Sound Collage" and his forays into orchestral music are explained in full detail in this book. It is wonderful and eye-opening.
Ian Peel has done some excellent research in compiling the information for this book. After reading this book, you will no doubt have a greater appreciation for Paul McCartney's more experimental musical side. Also, one may listen to his avant-garde work with a different set of ears. Excellent book!!
Paul McCartney Goes Too Far.......2003-04-18
Ian Peel methodically tracks McCartney's experimental music work going back to Revolver and detailing many half-forgotten, odd Wings tracks, B-sides, and side projects. Not just about his avant-garde career but looking at his musical career beyond its pop context. It would have been better had it explored the fascinating dynamic of his simultaneous experimental/avant garde work with his classical composing, which is not given much space. Only other hesitation to five stars is at times it is too laudatory where more critical writing might have been more appreciated. Still, quite an achievement. This book goes very far (Paul McCartney Goes Too Far was the title proposed for a Beatles era experimental Stockhausen/Cage inspired work he never finished) toward giving more appropriate weight to what Paul was up to all those Wings years outside of the pop spotlight.

Customer Reviews:
Inspiring and enlightening.......2007-01-09
This book contains fascinating conceptual articles on the changing nature of leadership and inspiring stories illustrating how women have created successful careers for themselves. I was particularly impressed by chapters that showed how the masculine traits of domination and control need to be replaced by organizational models based on collaboration and facilitation. Convincing evidence is cited for the value of feminine traits and the need to promote more women to senior executive roles. One writer discusses how feminine traits foster collaboration within organizations and between them and their strategic partners. I think these domains are ideally suited to feminine traits. But, there was no mention of the traits required for successful competition in aggressive markets. Here, I think, we still need masculine traits, whether in men or women. More generally, I don't think promoting more women to senior executive positions goes far enough. Organizational cultures need to change to foster a better balance of masculine and feminine traits, one to facilitate internal collaboration and the other for aggressive competitiveness externally. Books like this are great for stimulating our thinking about these vital issues.
Carly, a leader???.......2006-03-29
I was actually interested in this book until I got to the 'Carly Fiorina' part. It was stated that she was successful at HP and the merger exceeded critics' expectations. As an HP (female) employee, I have lived through the Platt, Fiorina and now Hurd years. And, believe me Fiorina was the worst kind (and most HP'ers will agree with me). She ruined this company!! She was visionary alright --- only about making millions for herself!! Please do some REAL research before making any assumptions on the successes of any CEOs (especially Carly).
Universal Lessons.......2005-08-22
With so many books on leadership, it's rare that one stands out as both comprehensive and new. I was skeptical that a book on "women's leadership" could effectively speak to both genders. I was surprised. While, I don't necessarily agree with all of the authors, I do appreciate the common theme that the best leaders do more listening, collaborating, and coalition-building. We can all get in that boat!
Inspirational.......2005-08-18
What a wonderful addition to anyone's library. Through the inspirational stories told by these women, the book gave me good insight on life. That leadership in the corporate world is not just about statistics and the "bottom line" but also about learning what works and doesn't work. As in Chapter 3, Deeper Power, the chapter makes one ask questions internally on how to "do it differently". "To acknowledge and embrace individuals and their authentic selves-not jobs or titles." Very well written and I would highly recommend this book not only to improve job performance but how to improve one personally.
Wide variety means relevant content.......2005-05-23
From David Gergen's foreward through Pat Mitchell's afterward, Enlightened Power forces us to contemplate the many traits that women bring to leadership positions and how they relate to our own roles as leaders. Whether you're working in corporate America or as an entrepreneur, you'll find guidance, insight and inspiration from the many contributers to this tome on women and leadership. Of particular interest to me were Kira Hower's chapter on "Influencing for Impact," and Karen Stephenson's chapter on "The Art and Science of Human Knowledge Networks." But, with such a wide variety of voices, I'm sure no matter where you are in your career, you will find articles that address your issues - that's the beauty of pulling together a number of different voices and viewpoints.
