A Good Addition to Existing Scholarship.......2005-09-16

I was most impressed by Michele Bogart's contribution to this exciting catalog and her expansion of the understanding of American artistic understanding of the city. The pictures in this exhibition highlight some very talented but overlooked artists and counteract the understanding that the city was not a popular artistic subject until the late-nineteenth/early-twentieth century by the American Impressionists like Childe Hassam. Bogart explains with depth and great clarity how these American artists saw and depicted New York in their work. This new tension is a great addition to existing scholarship.

Sophie Tucker appeared in only seven American stage musicals and appeared only twice on Broadway but, then, it was difficult to cast her in a show. A buxom and ebullient performer, she—and her audiences—quickly found that playing herself was most effective.

This is a biography of a vaudeville and cabaret performer who saw herself as one of the first liberated women and one of the last "red hot mamas." It tells the story of her birth as her mother traveled to Boston from Russia, her childhood in Boston, and her first public performance at Poli's Vaudeville Theatre at the age of 13. It also tells the story of her troubled marriage to Louis Tuck and the birth of their son, her meeting with Willie Howard, a vaudeville veteran who encouraged her to go to New York and pursue a stage career, her discovery by Flo Ziegfeld (of the Ziegfeld Follies), and her rise to headliner status under the guidance of her agent William Morris. She was best known for appearing on stage with just a piano player, and openly discussing her life and Jewish upbringing.

Miss Her When She's Gone.......2005-07-03

Fields, the author, takes us into some rarefies show bix realms in his lavishly illustrated volume. I appreciate his industry in compiling this record, but he seems totally uncritical of Tucker, and paradoxically this makes me distrust his judgment. Was she always perfect, always on? The interesting part comes towards the end of the book when she sinks her money into an ill-fated 1963 Broadway musical version of her life (with music by talk show host and prolific composer Steve Allen), starring someone else as herself, and when the show flops, Fields reports, she is devastated, apparently seeing this as a rejection of herself by the show business she had served with such devotion for so many years.

Fields has otherwise dug up a lot of rare material. Among the most enjoyable items was reading the lyric of Irving Berlin's 1950s salute to her called "Song For Sophie." I don't believe I have ever heard this song and i wonder if it is recorded anywhere. The lyric is one of Berlin's best and captures his bewildered fascination with the show business behemoth who, like himself, was never afraid to show off his Jewish heritage and to building considerable comedy out of the contrast between their humble roots and their exalted present circumstances.

Tucker's movies are good ones, but I've only seen a few, and maybe others have her in larger parts, though I imagine she was hard to cast in the glamorous MGM of the 1930s. Wish someone would release tthe British 1934 vaudeville backstager they had the foresight to call GAY LOVE--that sounds like a pip. Until then, we can catch some of her act on DVD and in the US films THOROUGHBREDS DON'T CRY and BROADWAY MELODY OF 1938.

The Last of the Red Hot Biographies.......2004-01-10

I learned a great deal in this easy-to-read, well-written biography, and not just about sophie Tucker but about the world of entertainment during much of the twentieth century.

Armond Fields' book is a must read for lovers of Sophie, theatre, vaudeville, cabaret, or just plain histiory.

This book is not the success that Sophie Tucker was........2003-09-01

I looked forward to reading Armand Fields' book about Sophie Tucker. This is only the fourth book about the late "Queen of Show Business". There is indeed much new material not included in the other books and that makes this one worthwhile. However, this book is filled with errors. One photograph of Sophie Tucker and her grown son Bert is captioned as Sophie and her husband Frank Westphal. Also an ad from the Florentine Gardens circa 1947 is captioned as from the 1930s despite her 40s coiffure and shoulder pads.

Mr. Fields seems not to have bothered to watch her films. He calls her role in "Broadway Melody of 1938" a cameo. A role with three songs and five wardrobe changes is hardly a cameo. Sophie does sing two songs in "Sensations of 1945" but not the titles listed by Mr. Fields. He also claims that her scene was cut out of "The Joker Is Wild". She appears in every print of this film that I have ever seen.

Shelton Brooks, writer of Sophie Tucker's anthem "Some Of These Days" has his name spelled as "Sheldon" Brooks. Also, songwriter Jack Yellen's name appears as "Yellin" despite the reproduction in the book of a piece of sheet music with the correct spelling.
The author also states that Tucker recorded every song on which her picture appears on the cover. If only that were true! There are many such errors in this biography.

To pay (money) for a paperback, you really should have an accurate book as well as more pictures for your money. Sophie Tucker still has not had the treatment she desereves.

About Time Soph Got a Good Bio.......2003-08-21

One of the most colorful and important performers of her time--and "her time" stretched from 1906 to 1966! Fields is a seasoned biographer and has done his homework; this is a thoroughly balanced and well-researched book, a must for students of theater and fans of Soph.

A Fascinating look at the original 'Red Hot Mama'.......2003-08-07

Armond Fields has produced another in his series of fascinating portraits of show business icons from an almost forgotten era. Sophie Tucker is a rich subject, indeed and Armond depicts her humor and gumption with great authority. This guy is both a wonderful historian and cultural detective, finding out the truth about leading figures in the formative years of the American entertainment business. I particularly like how he gets beneath the myth-making that Sophie Tucker spun, to discover the full-bodied, hot-blooded human being beneath the blarney.

Fun mystery.......2006-07-18

A young woman who is in Mrs. Roosevelt's employ is suspected in the murder of her boyfriend. Mrs. Roosevelt is certain that the young woman (Pamela) is innocent and with the help of a few officials, sets out to prove it. This is not an easy task, since the murdered boyfriend is the son of a Congressman who doesn't take too kindly to Mrs. Roosevelt's involvement, especially since her investigations reveal a few not-so-nice details about the young man's personal life and hobbies.

The plot involves a jewel theft and false identities. You'll get to meet a few seedy characters from the gambling world. Mrs. Roosevelt mingles with these people in an effort to get information, and it's rather amusing.

Overall, this is a fun, easy to read book with a good plot. I wouldn't call it intriguing or suspenseful, since the guilty party/parties are made sort of obvious. But it's fun nonetheless.

Decent plot, convoluted sentence structure........2005-03-28

Enjoyed the plot - but wasn't impressed with the wordage. So much so, I even checked to see when written, as it appeared to be from much longer ago than 1984! Possibly the author was schooled elsewhere than the US?

Curiouser and curiouser.......2004-01-20

It is reported that an employee of the usher staff has become a crime victim. Pamela Rush-Hodgeborne, one of Mrs. Roosevelt's secretaries, is a suspect. She is taken to jail where Mrs. Roosevelt visits her. The girl's former employer, a member of the English nobility, urges Mrs. Roosevelt to get to the bottom of the matter on Pamela's behalf.

Pamela was formerly a member of the entourage of the Countess of Crittenden. Mrs. Roosevelt tells Pamela that proof of her innocence is merely waiting to be found. The current crime seems to be related to an earlier one of the theft of the Earl of Crittenden's gems. The victim is a rather slippery fellow. He is the son of a Congressman, a machine politician. Pamela feels that he was superficial and insincere. The tainted bottle of bitters found in Pamela's apartment was provided by the victim. It is necessary to ascertain who beside Pamela had access to the bottle.

The writing is witty and entertaining. The plot is fairly convoluted and involves a false identity. Throughout the book Mrs. Roosevelt's wonderful interest in people of every sort is portrayed.

Spotty.......2000-08-29

Generally, I liked this book, but I think that's only because I like the concept of Eleanor Roosevelt as a sleuth. The major plot twists were too obvious--without their purpose being very clear, which is quite a feat indeed. And I'd have to go back and read some of Elliot Roosevelt's other books to make sure, but I'd swear he's plagiarized himself in a few spots. Those club scenes sounded *awfully* familiar.

GREAT BOOK FOR MUTTS FANS.......2007-07-10

If you love the comic strip, Mutts, you will love this beautiful color edition of the comic strips with large, easy-to-read type. It'd look great on your coffee table. Mr. McDonnell relates what inspires his strips, his personal history, and thoughts about his characters. There are roughs showing his thought process, sketchbook drawings and examples of his pre-Mutts artwork. As I suspected, Krazy Kat, was a big influence on his artistry. This is the kind of book fans enjoy.

You might want to check out a book on a collection of Krazy Kat cartoons to compare the style.

A work of art.......2007-01-04

Mutts and Patrick McDonnell should be household names by now. The comics are sometimes funny, sometimes dramatic, but always entertaining and thoughtfully done. The drawing is artistic and passionate with homage paid to other comics and various cultural styles. One of my favorite comics up there with Dilbert, Rose is Rose, Foxtrot, and For Better or For Worse.

Very, very good, but not much is new here.......2004-05-02

One of the best new comic strips to come down the pike in the last ten years is Patrick McDonnell's Mutts.

Cute doggie Earl and rascally Mooch have an understated charm that's reminiscent of the relationship between Snoopy and Charlie Brown before Snoopy took to the air in his imaginary Sopwith Camel.

Mutts is a down-to-Earth examination of how pets fit into the lives of their masters and vice-versa.

McDonnell's sensitivities derive from his simple yet eloquent style that draws upon the love and empathy that the strip's characters have for each other.

The book itself is a wonderful reprinting of many of his best daily and Sunday color strips. Also included are notes that cite the sources of the title panels of the Sunday strips that pay homage to old record albums, comic book covers, famous works of art, and movie posters.

The true fan of the Mutts strip will consider this book a 'must-have'. However, I have to admit that if you've been purchasing the Mutts collections printed so far, there's scant new material in this book. For a book of its size, the autobiographical information is very lean. There was probably more to read about McDonnell in a recent Star-Ledger newspaper interview than in this book.

I bought it for myself as a frivolous, self-indulgent treat. You might not want to do likewise.

Yesh! A Book Better Than a Pink Sock!.......2004-01-08

Patrick McDonnell's work is among the very best gracing the newspaper comic strip pages today. There is a genuine quality to his work; an honesty that shines forth from the funnies. It is truly wonderful to see Abrams honor McDonnell and "Mutts" with this absolutely terrific monograph. The design of the book is scrumptious. Each page is carefully considered and I love the way that the designer combined sketchbook doodles and finished comic strips. It was also great to see references given for the Sunday page logo panels. They bring you just a little bit closer to the work.

And the work is really the main event here. The reproduction quality is glorious, giving us a sneak peak at what originals might look like. The color--oy, what color--is beautifully printed. If you can't see the original drawings, this book is the next best thing. The selection of work is great. They chose some of Mutts' very best, including the wonderful ice cream cone gag! That one remains one of my very favorites.

There are some really nice insights here, though they're not overblown. Like the strip itself, McDonnell writes in a true, succint way, then he lets his strip do the talking. You really get a sense of how invested he is in his creation.

Gain Insights in a Fun Way.......2007-06-08

Reading and/or listening to this management story is a fun way to gain insight about people with whom we work and interact. I enjoyed the positive presentation about different perspectives and strenghts that people have and where the best place to deploy people with these attributes might be. The book encourages objective interactions that are win-win and non-judgemental.

Interesting idea, so-so execution, terrible reading in the Audio book.......2006-05-21

Here we go again, another personality classification system and the author's premise that if you can stereo type people you can manage them more effectively. I don't see what this system has over other personality classification systems, such as MBTI (which has been around longer and more people seem to be familiar with).

The book tries to be humorous, but it just didn't work. The story telling wasn't bad, but I'd almost rather listen to nails on a chalk board then listen to the voices of the people reading this book.

Bottom line. I learned a little, but not much and I'd like my money back.

A must in personality tests.......2005-07-31

I found Kingdomality (the test) almost 10 years ago. I took the test and was impressed by its accuracy. Since then, I have taken the online test 3 or 4 times more, with the same results.

So, when browsing on a local bookstore, I saw that the test creators had a book about Kingdomality, I did not hesitate and bought it.

What is Kingdomality (the test and the book) about? Well, it basically sustains that people can be grouped in 12 categories of personality types. These types are a function of how people see the world, what are their motivations, how do they interact with it. It's called Kingdomality because the personalities can be linked to "standard" professions in the Middle Ages (the time of Kingdoms...).

Those who have already taken the test and have enjoyed its simplicity and accuracy will enjoy this book. It will allow them to have a more comprehensive view of all the 12 types and how could they be used productively in a work environment.

For those who have not taken the test, but enjoy learning about new and different personality type tests, this is also a great book. The test concept is simple, and the types are clearly different among them. Still, I think I would advise all to take the test first and then read the book (doing otherwise might "contaminate" your test with your expectations for its results).

Well, as I said, I always got the same result in the test. So, in case you wonder, I seem to be a Merchant.

A Good Read.......2005-06-23

This loosely medieval management parable about "a king at his wits' end" has several winning characteristics. First, it's relevant without taking itself too seriously. The light, self-effacing - even occasionally tongue-in-cheek - tone makes it easily readable. Authors Sheldon Bowles, Richard Silvano and Susan Silvano actively engage readers with a brief interactive online test that reveals your personality "guild type." Then they draw on their narrative's strength to move forward. Many books about emotional intelligence give readers little practical help. This one is fun, helpful and entertaining even though its guild classification system may need additional tweaking. Apparently designed primarily for workplace applications, it lacks the specificity of the more familiar Myers-Briggs test, which in comparison practically predicts how you'll want your eggs cooked a month from next Tuesday. Notwithstanding these minor limitations, we recommend this book to managers, coaches, consultants, EQ practitioners and those HR folks burdened with softening the Type A corporate hearts who run most organizations.

A must read for all managers.......2005-02-16

I had the chance to attend a book signing by Sheldon Bowles of his book Kingdomality. When he started to speak to a large crowd there was a table loaded with books and I wondered how many he'd sell.
