Book Description
In September 1879, James McNeill Whistler boarded the Venice-bound night train in Paris. He was forty-five years old and bankrupt. What was to be a three-month stay in the Italian city--long enough to complete a set of twelve etchings--stretched to fourteen months. When Whistler returned to London, he brought back over fifty magnificent etchings and a hundred pastels, far in excess of the original commission. In Palaces in the Night, Margaret F. MacDonald looks at this key period in Whistler's career, examining his unique vision of Venice and his development of the medium of etching. She shows how he reestablished himself in the art world of London and Paris, turning disaster and disgrace into profit and prestige. Lavishly illustrated with some of the most beautiful and intriguing images Whistler ever produced, this book provides a fascinating account of a pivotal period in the artist's long and complicated career.
Whistler's aim was to restore both his fortune and reputation with the Venetian etchings. To that end he included views of familiar sights like the Riva degli Schiavoni and San Marco, but he also captured quiet backwaters, secret gardens, and lantern-lit windows that did not appear in any guidebook. His selection of views and compositions, plus the expressiveness of his line and printing, differentiated his work from that of others, and MacDonald shows the process by which Whistler selected, shaped, and edited his Venetian corpus. He drew figures in distinctively Italian costume, each an individual, moving, gesturing, and interacting with other real people.
An appendix of Whistler's letters from Venice provides an entertaining account of his time there and also deepens the reader's understanding of how the city challenged and inspired him.

Etchings & Pastels to change your view of Whistler.......2005-09-24
This is an amazingly fine book of Whistler's etchings & pastels for a very reasonable price now that it has been remaindered. To me, the absolute economy of means in his pastels is stunning. Every pastel artist should pick up this book. Just looking carefully at these little masterpieces is worth more than a whole course in pastel drawing.

Tri-focal Alert.......2007-06-28
This story is a four stars - but if you are over fifty, then the type is so small you may find it an uncomfortable read. A bit more real estate on the page would be a big help.
An New Original of an Old Story.......2007-06-07
I'm a big fan of the Lone Wolf and Cub series. It tells a story with multiple, multiple layers on morality and honor. Path of the Assassin tells a great story, the relationship of a ninja and his master, whom he must protect "in the shadow" without others knowing his existence. The two are 16, players navigating the traps of the adult political world. While this first book lacks the many layered complexity of Lone Wolf and Cub the stories are high energy and deals with morality issues between the bonds of master and servant. Look for other books in this series to enjoy after this book.
Well done.......2006-11-10
Right in line with Samurai Executioner and Lone Wolf and Cub.
Engrossing story, as well as a good view into how Japan was back in the Samurai era.
"Lifelong friends, with the Same Dreams, Striving to Grow into a Rising River".......2006-07-27
"Hanzo no Mon" ("Path of the Assassin") is a manga by writer Kazuo Koike and artist Goseki Kojima that was originally published in Japan in 1972. Because it is a relatively short series, compared to Kokie and Kojima's "Lone Wolf & Cub" and "Samurai Executioner," Dark Horse is only now getting around to publishing these books now that those other series have both been concluded. We are still talking a Parental Advisory for explicit content, but unlike the previous series it has been oriented in the right-to-left reading format of the original (at at the creator's request apparently). This is the story of Jattori Hanzo, the fabled master ninja whose duty was to protect his master Tokugawa Ieyasu, who was destined to be shogun who would unify Japan and great a modern nation. As told by Koike and Kojima, not only doez Hanzo use his ninja talents to serve the future leader "in the dark," but also forms a close friendship with the young shogun.
"Path of the Assassin, Volume 1: Serving in the Dark," is set in the Sengoku period, when ambitious samurai warriors were releasing ninja, called "suppa," to be part of various plots and intrigues. The "suppa" who works for the Matsudaira clan is Hattori Hanzo Yasunaga of Iga, who orders his son Mattori Hanzo Masanari, to serve Matsduaira Jiro Saburo Monotnobu, later known as Ieyasu. When these stories begin, Motonobu, the master is only sixteen, while his servant Masanari is fifteen. This first volume has seven "chapters on relinquishing pain":
No. 1: "Suppa Unsheathed" beings with Hattori Hanzo Yasunaga ordering his eldest son to steal a giant vase with a flower and a bird on it, and to do so without being noticed. If the eldest son, Yasutoshi fails, the task will fall to the next brother, Yasumasha. When neither brother can accomplish the task, the youngest son requests the opportunity to succeed. He does with "the skill of an unsheathed suppa," and the brother who was last becomes first and is ordered to "serve our master in the dark."
No. 2: "Serving in the Dark" tells of how Masanari introduced himself to his new lord, only to have to do it a second time. The future shogun does not look that impressive, but there is some reason to believe that he is truly samurai. This is really the second part of the first episode in bringing the two characters together.
No. 3: "Mizuki" is Japanese for "water princess." Facing his wedding, Motonubu orders his servant to show him what to do with a woman who has a will of her own (a round about way of saying Motonubu is a virgin). Masanari creates a diversion in a fishing village, captures one of the half naked diving girls, and sexually assaults her while his master watches. Fortunately this one takes a couple of major twists and the character does know that he has raped a young woman, but despite the Luke & Laura ending this one is a bit unsettlng, although certainly consistent with the world Koike and Kojima present in their manga.
No. 4: "Oppressive Night of Ass" shifts the attention to Motonubu and his wedding night. Despite the illustration provided by his servant in the previous story, Motonubu and his bride take a slightly different approach to their love making, which leads the future Shogun to become rather philosophical.
No. 5: "Technique of Jisatsu" is a key story because it clearly signals that Motonubu is not on the traditional path of a tyrant. After being humiliated in a test of his swordsmanship by Asahina Yasuyoshi, the strongest samurai in the clan, Motonubu cannot get over the insult. When Motonubu asks his hidden "suppa" if he can take down Yasuyoshi, Masanari says it should not be difficult. But Motonubu insists he is only asking if it is possible and not ordering it to be done. Instead he asks for proof that hsi "suppa" can do it, which results in Motonubu learning a lesson of a different sort. Here is where we get the sense for the first time that these two might both be on the road to greatness, because prior to this point Masanari is clearly the more important and more laudable figure.
No. 6: "Kite Kato" is about Kato Danzo, who has the nickname "kite" (which means raptor) and who boldly asks permission from the viceroy of Shuruga to complete a mission of revenge. Seventeen years earlier a Harunobi exiled his own father, who became a monk (and therefore as good as dead as far as Kato is concerned), and now the time has come to claim vengeance. As Kato explains his complicated plan, Motonubu admires the "suppa," and wonders how good Masanari is at the skill of hiding his thoughts and emotions. The thoughts make him nervous.
No. 7: "Who is He in the Rain?" continues the story of Kite Kato, who has backed the viceroy into a corner. But when the viceroy orders his retainers to kill Kato, the one who does not move is Motonubu. The first part of this episode is the conclusion of Kato asking the viceroy for permission to kill two men, but the second half hinges on a brief story told by Kato that sets up a "suppa" battle between Kato and Masanari. If there is a common theme in these early stories, it is that Masanari's mind is faster than his sword, and once again it serves him in good stead and these seven stories are good enough to justify rounding up, even without taking into account the stellar reputation of their creators.

They are half-human horrors, strange and scary aliens, the seemingly-normal-but-deadly danger that lurks around the corner: Hollywood monsters, or homosexuals? Horror fiction has always portrayed society's greatest fears as monstrous incarnations of "the other," so it should be no surprise that there has always been a clear homoerotic subtext in horror films--from Frankenstein to Interview with the Vampire. Harry M. Benshoff's Monsters in the Closet details how Hollywood monsters have not only been a reflection of homosexuals, but that changes in the horror film have actually mirrored changes in attitudes toward homosexuality in our society. Discussing hundreds of classic (and not so classic) movies, Benshoff provides new insight into horror and science fiction films and into how popular culture presents ideas about homosexuality to a broad audience.

It will change how you watch movies.......2006-09-06
This is an excellent book and the only full volume on the subject. Horror reveals our collective cultural fears, things we find threatening even if we cannot explain why, things we consciously or unconsciously identify as "Other." Much has been written about how horror films illustrate fears concerning race and gender, but our culture's obvious prejudices toward queer (non-hetero) sexuality and their representation in the genre have never been this directly and thoroughly addressed.
Benshoff moves through the material chronologically dealing not only with the films, but the evolving medical and social approaches to the subject. The chapters on classic horror are especially thorough and entertaining. Moving into the era of the Production Code, censorship forced audiences and filmmakers alike to read/write between the lines. Some changes forced by Code officials unintentionally made the material more lurid and suggestive than before. As Benshoff gets into our current postmodern era, things become much more complicated, and the author is not as elaborate as he might be, but by then we've already been through a substantial volume of material, not to mention the difficulty of writing about movements and trends still playing themselves out.
Reading this book will change how you watch movies. If you look at "The Lost Boys," for example, and substitute "queer" or "homosexual" for "vampire," you get a very different movie loaded high with innuendo. When you consider that director Joel Schumacher is openly gay, "The Lost Boys" becomes a subversive queer film made for straight people. Sure, the vampires die at the end, but Benshoff argues here that their attractive image of raw sexual power lingers with audiences more than their destruction.
Most of the negative reviews here cite problems with the author's lack of "proof." Benshoff clearly states in his introduction that this is a subjective analysis. He reads the films from the perspective of a queer audience. While directors like James Whale intentionally coded queer figures into their films, many did not. It is precisely the unawareness of these filmmakers that makes their representation of situations and figures that can be read as queer so telling about the attitudes and underlying feelings of the culture at large. Also, queer filmgoers, like everyone else, look for themselves in the films they see and are sensitive to such representations, regardless of intent.
Overall this is a highly intelligent, entertaining book that opens a dialogue we need to be having both inside and outside the academic community. If you're interested in horror, film analysis or queer theory, this is definitely a book to pick up. For myself it's up there with Carol J. Clover's "Men, Women, And Chainsaws" as a modern milestone in film theory.
Like a good conversation,.......2006-07-05
the author keeps you interested, and mixes just the right amount of humor into the work. Unfortunately, pre-60s horror movies, he seldom backs up his arguments, instead claiming something to be obviously homosexual and then describing the plot. While I admit, it is very easy to interpret some of these works as homosexual, and I know it would be difficult to find much evidence outside a James Whale movie, he relys primarily on circumstantial evidence to defend himself. (References and evidence are two different things.) Throughout the work, he makes interesting points which are well thought out, I'm glad I purchased it...but as it is, the book doesn't amount to more than a great conversation with somebody.
A WORK OF GENIUS!!!.......2005-03-29
This is the book that explains that CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON is really about homosexuality because...well you see the Gill Man's head is really a phallus. Got It?? And even though the Creature pursues Julie Adams thoughout the picture, he is REALLY interested in Richard Carlson, Richard Denning and the rest of the male crew which is why he keeps attacking them. Got it?? Adams is just a beard. Even though the Gill Man goes after Adams again and again, he is only trying to lure those men in the bathing suits to his lair so he can have his way with them.
Got that?? And Denning and Carlson STAB the Creature with their knives and spearguns!!! Does one need go on?? Good. Thank God for tenure so we can have more works of SHEER genius..like this.
Gem of a book.......2004-01-10
I find myself going back to this book over and over again, as it is so filled with insightful readings of many of my favorite old horror films. Fun, thought-provoking, and a real page-turner. I hope a 2nd edition comes out updated to the newest queerly inflected horror films.
By the way, ignore the "reviewer" who claims that by quoting Foucault, Benshoff "tips his hand" as a dreaded "deconstructionist" and thus invalidates his whole book. First, the book is hardly a headache inducing "theory book". Second, Foucault was NOT a deconstructionist at all!!! The reviewer is obviously confusing Michel Foucault with Jacques Derrida, which basically invalidates not the book, but that person's whole argument!
Monster queers on the rampage........2000-05-06
In spite of having a context of sociological theory, this is a racy even humorous tour of the subject from the 1930s to the 1980s. There are a number of themes, for example the projection of gays on the screen as a threat to "normal" family values and the links between violence and sexual difference. Here and there the author may be over the top. Thus the notion of the Frankenstein monster having a physical relationship with the blind hermit or, in a later film with Ygor, will not be believed by all. But Benshoff would not claim to be uncontroversial. And he is certainly right in his conclusion that horror movies are influential in defining gay sub culture more generally. In the words of the personal ad, "Count Dracula seeks Jonathan Harker for fun times."

Book Description
The German lied, a song form that fuses music and poetry, provides a key to understanding far-reaching cultural changes at the turn of the century, says Edward F. Kravitt in this definitive book. As artistic politics pitted tradition against innovation, naturalism against symbolism, and nationalism against universalism, the lied became an important vehicle in the German people`s search to rediscover their national roots.

Book Description
Facing a volatile stock market, many people have turned to real estate as a way to invest their hard-earned money. While many investors opt to buy property and then sell it quickly, other investors choose to hold onto their property for a longer period of time to realize a greater return on their investment. Real estate experts Scott Frank and Andy Heller have developed a proven and diversified program for real estate investing that incorporates both approaches and enables investors to take control of their financial futures and build wealth over time.
Their new book, Buy Low, Rent Smart, Sell High: Real Estate Investing for the Long Run outlines a win-win-win program, one where average people can reap significant financial rewards by investing in real estate.
*
Win One: Buying Low - The investors first win occurs by purchasing real estate at a 10-20 percent discount by seeking out motivated buyers and avoiding paying agent commissions. The book reveals the secret to buying foreclosed homes with clean titles from banks and mortgage companies.
*
Win Two: Renting Smart - The property is rented through a lease/purchase agreement. Not only does the investor get a down payment from the lease/purchasee, but he or she also receives monthly rent that usually exceeds the monthly mortgage payment. Also, the lease/purchasee takes on the maintenance and repair responsibilities and tends to be a better tenant in return for their special lease/purchase terms. In addition, as the owner of the property, the investor is able to receive tax write-offs.
*
Win Three: Selling High - The final win results when the lease/purchasee exercises his or her right to purchase the property. The owner has realized the benefits of owning the property and has sold it to the lease/purchasee without agent commissions. If the lease/purchasee decides not to exercise his or right, the investor still wins because he or she can either extend the lease purchase agreement and increase the purchase price (based on property appreciation) or enter into another lease/purchase agreement with a new tenant and begin the cycle of wins all over.

overall pretty darn good.......2007-03-22
Book was very simple to read, finished it in 2 days, probably could of done it in one except for a big accounting test got in the way. The book gives you another strategy on real estate, and it is very inspiring to get you off your butt and go do it.
enlightening.......2007-01-10
absolutly fantastic...
gives you new ideas and way to do real estate in a way that really appeal to those who not just want their success but seeking other's too.
Great Book .......2006-10-10
I do not read many books from cover to cover. This one I read. I found it very useful and informative. I had two properties that I purchased at FMV. I have since purchased two other properties since reading this book. They were HUD foreclosed properties that I purchased at 75% below FMV minus repairs. I used my own money, fixed them up,refinanced them and got an 80% loan. I pulled back all my money plus I now have $19,000 of equity in one and $16,000 of equity in the other one. I did walked away with $5k and $3k respectively after expenses. I did a lease purchase but not their way. I did the non-qualifying with the big money up front. Their way did not work for me. I tried it though. This book really got my brain to churning. It is not a get rich quick book but if you are serious and looking to build wealth I think this is a good book to read. I call it my real estate bible. I am currently trying to find one that is better or just as good but have not found it so far.
Decent Overview on the topic of REO Properties.......2006-09-04
This book was a decent read. I probably would have gotten more benefit from it if I lived in a part of the country where there was less competition for REOs. It is not feasible in the part of the country where I live to expect for there to be an abundance of REO properties at bargain rates. There is so much competition in the part of the country that I live in that the information in this book is just of general use. I still
recommend that you buy it. But its usefulness will be determined by how much competition is in your area for REOs.
REOs aren't a bargain.......2006-07-07
Its the same ole same ole... besides, you find better deals working with a REALTOR(R) looking for motivated sellers in the MLS. First, when a notice of default is published every real estate agent and their brother in the area is hounding the owner to list and sell before foreclosure and REO (so many do), and second, if it does go REO, there are so many bottom feeding sharks looking for a "good deal" in an REO, it gets bid up and often goes over market in a feeding frenzy...
