Book Description
Like a latter-day Goya, Sue Coe is driven to create moral works, from stark renditions of slaughterhouse brutality to accounts of abused domestic animals and laboratory testing. In Pit's Letter, a hapless canine describes her desolate life to her only surviving sister. She recounts her puppyhood and upbringing in her human family, her heartless banishment, and finally her suffering and death at the hands of the experimenting scientists at Eden Biotechnology. Ironically, her former master winds up in the same situation: an accidental scratching infects him with a pathogen - and man and beast share the same fate.

a horrendous book.......2006-01-15
If you want to get overly depressed, this is the book for you. the illistratoins have blood, guts, fighting, and other seans that are overly depressing. this book shoes cruelty to animals. the book does deathning experiments on the animals. Some of Its experements are prying dogs mouths open until they bleed, or cutting animals' vocal cords so they can't cry when they are doing other experiments. I relized that this book is trying to point out that cruelty to animals is happenning, but this bookis very disturbing and out of a dark place!
Pay attention to the message.......2004-12-17
I have read some reviews on this site, and have to say that many are missing the point of this work. The work was based on Hogarth's Four Stages of Cruelty. The topics that are covered are not just about pit bulls or their reputation, or about human to animal cruelty. While those are the the main reasons many buy this book, pay attention to the other messages that are being sent here. This book discusses vivisection, spousal abuse, gang rape, and the downfall of a human being. It shows the results of an abusive childhood on one particular boy, who in turn learned that torturing the weak was acceptable. His father (an abusive and angry person) separates him from his dog because the dog couldn't prove herself in the hunting sport, and leaves her behind. The boy has now lost his only source of comfort and morals, and grows up with out them. He goes on to rape a mentally disabled girl "because she'll never tell" and then become a scientist who's colleagues tortures the very animal that he found his only solace in as a child. The irony is in the fact that he contracts a deadly virus from an animal that he tortures and dies in very much the same fashion as his beloved dog. There are many places online where you can research this artists work. It's not just about the Pit bull, or animal cruelty, or any one subject at all. It covers a plethera of difficult topics that are meant to invoke emotions and make people think. I am a proud owner of two pit bulls and I am glad that I checked out this book, as it covers so much more than I ever expected.
Finding Empathy..........2004-04-29
This book was not just a story about the pit bulls "misconception" but of human "misconception". I have always believed that man was put on earth to take care of animals, not act like one. This book explores just how far humans will go to attain dominance and superiority over anyone or anything they deem "weaker"...I loved the book and plan to give it as gifts to all I feel "know what empathy might be".
USELESS DRIBBLE.......2004-02-27
Nothing but stereotypical bull plop. If you really want to know anything about the breed read any of Richard Stratton's books, they are pretty good. This book and the "author's" views are scandalous (scandal sell my friend) at best and a great disservice to these noble creatures and the responsible owner of this breed who has to put up with the prejudices or our society. Beleive it or not, not all pitbull owners are dirt bags or lowlifes.
Hyperbolic animal rights fantasies gone wild.......2004-02-17
Sue Coe has no equal but is beloved by animal rights radicals for her jaundiced, human-hating view of life on earth. To her all humans are evil and savage, even the good people are tainted. All animals are innocent victims tortured by humanity. What's scary is not what you see in Sue Coe's overheated imagery, but the fact that many young people are captivated by her gothic vision and take it for gospel truth. The stereotypical caricatures of dog fighters are a joke. We all know that every animal abuser goes on to hurt people, too. Right. Whatever. Sue Coe really despises people, and that's sad. She invokes just about every animal rights cause in this small book, including a feverish slam at deer hunting, which seemed totally gratuitous and unwarranted in a book supposedly focussing on pit bulls. I got this book from Amazon because I own a pit bull. I knew better than to expect a fair and balanced picture from Sue Coe, though.

Book Description
Lunches are disappearing and clothes are being torn to shreds in the halls of Jindai High! Sosuke decides to take the investigation into his own hands, but he gets sidetracked by the discovery of his own hidden talent - synchronized swimming! This underwater soldier can impress everyone in his swimming trunks, but how will he measure up to Kaname's grandfather, an ex-military man with twice the experience of his granddaughter's protector? Sosuke might be acing it as an undercover student, but the jury's still out on his military performance in Full Metal Panic! Volume 7.
Customer Reviews:
Full Metal... wait... where's the metal?.......2005-02-18
Volume #7 of FMP would probably be served by the subtitle "Fumoffu" as reference to the second season of the television series which was more about the school-yard antics and budding relationship of Sosuke and Kaname than the Whispered and giant mechs. If you're interested in full blown ArmSlave action, I'm afraid that all you'll get is a lovely "collectable toy wrapped in chocolate" chapter.
That being said, I loved it. FMP mainly appealed to me for it's high-school comedy/combat angle which was similar to Ranma (just more mature)... the idea of throwing a battle-hardened combat vet into a warzone of a different nature tickled my funny-bone.
There's plenty of fan-service with the occasional bursts of violence as the book is a series of small episodes in the daily lives of it's two main characters. The aformentioned chocolate covered mechs, an old warrior's quest to find his granddaughter, and a lovely little cosplay adventure are all included (much to my enjoyment). Try not to get creeped out by the flamboyant syncronized swimming coach, just think of it as another chance to catch Kaname in a swimsuit.
To be honest, this book felt like it'd be more at home in the "Maniac Road" universe (another fine otaku manga), but I'm happy with the end result.

Hilarious.......2007-04-27
I've had this book since I was in middle school, and have read it a ton of times. Some of the jokes are totally out of date, many of them referencing the first Gulf War, the time before Giuliani when Manhattan was a nightmare et. al. That said, they all still hold up, especially the one on the back cover explaining the numerous reasons why you should buy the book. Heed that advice, and get an old copy of this hilarious time capsule.
Not Funny Any More.......2005-08-11
We were so enthralled with David Letterman that we redefined our humor lexicon to include this form.
Another reviewer expresses gratitude that we have preserved this form for our children. Here's a list forya:
10. You bet your sweet bippy.
9. Sock it to...me?
8. I'll drink to that.
7. Moving right along...
6. To the moon, Alice!
5. I'm growing tired...
Humor in the form of sound bites.......2005-03-06
The humor of the Late Night top ten lists has to be very difficult to write. While the topic provides some context, there is little else but common knowledge that the writers can use as a background. This means that the joke must be completely expressed in at most one or two short sentences. Despite this strict set of constraints, the lists are generally very funny, and this book is a collection of lists that appeared on the show before October 1990.
If you like your humor in small, easily digestible bites, then this is the book for you. Some lists will make you laugh, others will make you groan, but all will make you smile.
Still Funny After All These Years.......2002-05-16
I have read this book many times, and it still makes me laugh. Even if you are not a fan of David Letterman and cannot imagine his delivery of these lists, you will still get a chuckle.
The only thing against the book is that it is a little dated. The first tipoff should be the picture of Dave on the front cover. He hasn't had that much hair in a while. Secondly, these lists were written in the late 80s so the younger generation may not get all the political and cultural references (such as references to Dan Qualye).
I would still recommend this book for anyone needing or wanting a laugh.
The Original Lists Preserved for Our Children.......2001-10-06
This book takes you back to the cutting edge humor of the Late Night early years (Ok, 1994). The lists are here, you provide the laughs. Believe it or not, the lists are funny enough to read and reread.
This book is an essential for the Letterman fan, especially new fans who don't know or remember the good ol' days.

Performance is the surreal seventies film starring Mick Jagger and James Fox. Entertainingly outrageous characters drift around a huge house in Notting Holl, with a heady concoction of love, drugs and gangsters. Made in 1970 and directed by Nicholas Roeg.

...and I THOUGHT I understood this film!!.......2002-06-11
This book will tell you everything and I mean EVERYTHING you wanted to and didn't know about Donald Cammel & Nicolas Roeg's film, Performance. There is background info on ALL those involved on and behind the scenes such as Mick Jagger, Anita Pallenberg, Michele Breton (whatever happened to her after filming wraped!)James Fox and everyone else. Donald Cammel's struggle with Warner Bros. over the content. Which parts got cut and where the edits eventually ended up!! The offscreen relationships between Brenton and Cammel...Jagger and Pallenberg, quotes from the cast, the filming, and the above all...what was Donald Cammel really trying to get across with this film? What was the ending about...why do we see Turner's face in the window of the car when it's suppose to be Chas? It's all here!! There is also mention of things that some people may have not even noticed or given much thought to while watching....such as the significance of the rolls-royce,the 'Old Man In The Mountain',Persia, those naked gangsters from "Memo From Turner",why clips of Turner spray painting his house flash on screen for no reason even before he is introduced, Pherber's "B12" shot, the Francis Bacon painting .....whoa! and I THOUGHT I understood this movie! Finished this whole book in one night! Everything is very organized and well written and I promise IT WILL SOLVE ANY AND ALL THOSE UNANSWERED QUESTIONS YOU EVER HAD ABOUT THIS FILM!!! ENJOY!!

A must-read investment roadmap to help investors target real returns in the market
The era of buying and holding stocks is gone-and will not return for some time. Investors need to learn to target where the market is going to be, not where it has been. Knowing where the economy and markets are going is the key to successful investing in the future. Financial expert John Mauldin makes a powerful, almost irrefutable case regarding the future direction of the markets. He then details a new approach to investing that will allow readers to adjust to what he demonstrates is the new reality of investing. Investors need to become familiar with "absolute return" vehicles, including hedge funds, certain types of bonds, and other value-oriented investments, if they intend to make money and retire comfortably. Mauldin argues that traditional stock portfolios should not be the primary investment vehicle for individual investors. Indeed, he credibly argues they will be a disappointment, if not a disaster, over the next decade, mirroring the results of similarly difficult markets like the 1970s. He shows readers how they must look for other options and be wary of the marketing promises and data used by brokers and mutual funds to attract investors. Filled with in-depth insight, copious groundbreaking research and practical advice, Leading the Markets will help readers choose stable and secure investments that will enable them to profit in turbulent markets.
John Mauldin (Richland Hills, TX) is President of Millennium Wave Investments. He has more than 20 years experience in the investment world, formerly serving as CEO of the American Bureau of Economic Research and was a partner in ProFutures Investments.
Customer Reviews:
Smoke and Mirrors Book.......2006-11-27
Very readable...if you have never heard of "secular bear market" you will have your eyes opened...especially if you are just about retire in the next decade or two...MUST READ...this could save your life (earnings). Information like this is basic 101 if you want to survive in this world...but you will be better off **NOT** paying any attention to stuff about hedge funds, absolute returns etc...seems like baloney...or at least put on your "skepticals" on when you reach that part of the book. Let me explain...
The author aspires to market timing which, albeit long-term, is his fundamental flaw. If you subscribe to "past performance is not indicative of future results" then why should we believe that we are in the middle of some pattern that the market has already not picked up on? How can we be so sure that we are in the middle of a secular bear market and even more specifically in the middle of a bear market rally in 2006? And, not for instance, on our way to Dow 36000 or Dow 100000? What if the developing world led by large market economies like India and Brazil have exponential growth in the next few years and a cheap dollar (thanks to a nervous China or Japan) takes the American *companies* along for the ride all the way to the top?
Chasing absolute returns, as suggested by the book, is as much a fools errand as market timing. Ironically, this is one of the the main goal of this book.
The take-away of this book...VALUE INVESTING...is hardly original. However, had he stopped with the value investing paradigm instead of going off the deep end with hedge funds, I would heartily recommend this book as a BUY.
The Big Bad Grizzly Bears.......2006-08-03
If a person constantly predicts a bear market over a period of years, eventually he will prove right, since, as we all know, bull markets do not last forever, and bear markets are regular features of the stock market landscape. However, it is not enough simply to predict a bear market, one must predict a bear market at the right time. A prediction of a bear market during the early and mid 1990s (and there were many) would not be particularly helpful, since the bull continued to 2000. The same applies here to Mauldin. Mauldin predicted a bear market in 2004. He was wrong. A consistent bull market has lasted from early 2003 until mid 2007 so far. If you listened to John Mauldin's advice, you would have missed the bull market of 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007, especially in small-mid caps and foreign markets.
According to John Mauldin, bull and bear markets always last approximately 7-15 years. The facts do not support this conclusion. A bear market lasts for as long as it continues, and no longer. The bear market of 2000-2003 lasted only 3 years. Now according to Mauldin, the bull market of 2003-2006 is simply a "bear rally." But three plus years of positive returns cannot be so easily dismissed. In practical terms, for investors, you simply cannot afford to sit out a market rally like the 2003-2006 one.
Study after study has shown that the best way to minimize your risk and maximize your returns is to diversify, invest for the long run, and choose your mutual funds and stocks with great care after substantial research. One should not "buy and hold" blindly, but it's been proved that if your investment horizon is 9 years or more, a diversified portfolio of stocks will consistently outperform bonds. Furthermore, it's impossible to time the market successfully on any kind of consistent basis.
Mauldin is in the hedge fund business; hedge funds are designed to produce positive returns during bear markets. So it is in his personal interest to convince people that a bear market is coming. Hedge funds are limited to people with over a million dollars, so they are not exactly a viable solution for average investors. In addition, hedge funds are not the cure-all that Mauldin suggests. In fact, many hedge funds lose money and go out of business. They are, in fact, extremely risky investments, despite Mauldin's claims.
Mauldin believes in a deep value approach to stock picking, which I happen to agree with. Value stocks have lower volatility and tend to outperform the market in the long run. However, they don't do as well as growth stocks during bull markets, as several value fund managers learned during the late 1990s, some of whom even lost their jobs.
The argument Mauldin makes for a coming recession is pretty persuasive although not original. Trade deficits, budget deficits, an aging population, pension and medicare obligations; these all point to increased inflation (the least painful and only politically acceptable way to pay off our obligations) leading to recession and depressed stock prices. With the current market and economic conditions (Aug. 2006), it's time to think about some defensive investment choices: value and high-dividend stocks, and bonds. But we are not in a recession yet, and it's not inevitable. As Mauldin points out, quoting Greenspan, the market is so large and complex that it's essentially impossible to make accurate predictions. And the market is so efficient, that if it were possible to predict the future by any means, that information would be immediately and permanently discounted.
Bull's Eye Investing Review.......2006-07-27
John Mauldin is an excellent writer and gives excellent advice, as well as a better understanding of the market action.
Must read book - an eye opener.......2006-03-11
There is a solid basis for everything that is said in the book and Mr Mauldin is quite rigorous in his statememts.
At the very least you will come out of the book being a bit more cautious about investments and that alone may be enough to help you make some money.
Historical Required Reading & Revision to the Mean Prediction.......2006-01-30
I enjoyed the book and have highlighted and/or earmarked many pages for later reference. The 1st 2/3rds of the book I would consider required reading about what happened in the '80s & '90s and the high probabilities of what will transpire over the next 10-15 years. For example, generations of investors were investment educated as "buy the dips" as the stock market always goes up over time. However, the question is and remains - how long is "over time"? If you started your investment program in say '98 via your 401K, how long will it take to recover your losses, and then you still may not have made any improvements for retirement.
The thesis is that with respect to history, as our guide, the market as a whole today is more overvalued now than was in March 2000. You may ask why, and the point is that back then you could find values in forgotten old industry stocks, but today - on average - all stocks are on the high range of many different historical pricing averages. Mr. Mauldin's recommendations are that you can always find selective cases of values in the market. However, if one plans on finding value via a 401K big fund or any of your run of the mill mutual funds, they are only going to match the market at best and the overall market will trend downward to sideways until the overall economy catches up with the current valuations. To quote him specifically, "Fifty percent of all doctors graduated in the bottom half of their classes, two plus two is four, trees do not grow to the sky, and markets always come back to the trend". Let us just call it revision to the mean.
