Book Description
This book is the first to bring together texts documenting the encounter between Western artists and writers and what has historically been called primitive art--the traditional, indigenous arts of Africa, Oceania, and North America. Beginning with the "discovery" of that art by European artists and writers early in the twentieth century, this anthology charts the evolving pictorial responses, artistic aspirations, aesthetic theories, and cultural debates that have developed from this encounter. Written by artists, literary figures, collectors, museum curators, and cultural critics, these essays--most of them never before translated or reprinted--show the dazzling range of issues elicited by the confrontation with primitive arts and cultures.
Primitivism designates not a specific movement or group of artists, but a persuasive notion crucial to twentieth-century art and modern thinking generally. Because the encounter between the West and primitive art took place at the height of Western colonialism, a number of racial and political issues come into play, either overtly or implicitly, in writings about both the art and the people who produced it. The contributions to this volume speak to each other in provocative ways, giving a unique overview of those issues.
Jack Flam provides an introduction to the book and brief outlines for each of its four sections. Also included are a coda of quotations from artists and critics from throughout the century; a chronology of events, exhibitions, and publications; an extensive bibliography; and over forty illustrations.

The Ultimate Western Design Resource.......2001-07-05
The Design 2000 Sourcebook is a wonderful resource of artists and craftspeople whose work centers around a Western theme. Each year the Western Design Conference sponsors a juried show in Cody, Wyoming, showcasing furniture and fashion designers as well as the makers of jewelry, art, home accents and accessories. This books presents the participants and their work in hundreds of lavish full color photographs and includes artisan biographies and contact information. There are others included here such as interior designers, long home builders, and guest ranches - as well as articles by architects and designers giving their take on the meaning of this very popular style of design. Even if you aren't looking to furnish a home, you will be fascinated with the beauty and diversity of the work featured in this lavish book. I understand that the 2001 version will be available this fall. Can hardly wait!

The Best Book For the Whole Gang!.......2000-04-23
This volume from Paradox Press gives you a wonderful illustration of the history of gang warfare. See the forerunners of today's Crips and Bloods! You'll love all the art, and the writing is good, too.
Caveat Emptor.......1997-05-01
This is another book review by Wolfie and Kansas, the boonie dogs from Toto, Guam. "The Big Book of Thugs" contains vignettes by 57 different comic artists about notorious gangs and mobs. We read this book because we heard there was a section about a gang called "the Hounds". It turned out that "the Hounds" was simply a name for a human gang. However, dogs do play a role in some of the stories in this book. A canine trained to snatch purses was an early member of the Crazy Butch Gang. The "emperor" of the Highbinder Society used dogs as bodyguards. We think these examples just show that there is no such thing as a bad dog. There are only good dogs trained by bad humans. . . . The art in this book is outstanding. The book is in black and white, but that is not a problem for relatively color blind animals like ourselves. Another big plus is that, unlike two of the four other Paradox Press "Big Books" that our noncanine animal companion ordered on the net or by mail, "The Big Book of Thugs" was not missing several pages in the middle

Are You My Boyfriend.......2002-09-12
Every single woman should share this with her friends! Hilarious and oh, so true! My best friend and I were walking through the bookstore and the little hot-pink book jumped out at me. We cried from laughter as we flipped through the pages. Between the two of us, we've dated pretty much ALL of them...and if you're a single female in the dating game, so have you! I highly recommend this book to be past around on your next "irlfriend night"
Inside scoop on all the boys.......2002-04-12
I love this book. I bought one for my girlfriend who was having a party. When I arrived she set the book down on the coffee table. Let me just say once it was picked up, it was never put down the rest of the night. People were loving trying to figure out which description best fit their man. Girls loved it, but every single guy at the party read the book to get the inside scoop on just what "type" they are. Watching them glued to the pages, self analyzing themselves was the best part of the evening. BUY IT, BUY IT, BUY IT. You'll have a blast.
The perfect Girl Talk book!.......2002-04-06
This book is hillarious. I literally spent all night talking with my friends about it! There are guys in here that are exactly like the men that you meet- and it makes you think of all the people you know that are like them. Quite a conversational topic- and great coffee table book! I've already bought 3 for other friends. Funny, the person that wants to read it the most is my boyfriend!
Book Description
John Huston's Filmmaking offers an analysis of the life and work of one of the greatest American independent filmmakers. Always visually exciting, Huston's films sensitively portray humankind in all its incarnations, chronicling the attempts by protagonists to conceive and articulate their identities. In this study, Lesley Brill shows Huston's films to be far more than formulaic adventures of masculine failure, arguing instead that they demonstrate the close connection among humanity, the natural world, and divinity.

An important lifetime.......2007-05-13
We purchased this book to get to know a man who was a friend to my father.
Flying together during WW2 I only got to know Ossie through my father and laterly after having the priviledge of meeting he and his wife Lee, found he and his career, most fascinating.
I can recommend this book to anyone with an interest in cinematography. It maps out a lifetime career of achievement sharing both the bad times with the very, very good while allowing you to see into the wonderful person who is Oswald Morris.

Customer Reviews:
Nice book, entertaining, but could be more instructive.......2003-04-11
I like this book, and at its new Dover edition price, it is a good buy (a very real consideration given the ridiculous price of most chess books). But I am not sure it adds anything important to chess literature. I could say that about any chess book (and my wife certainly would!), but my point is this: it is one of the many chess books that tries to make its point negatively. That is, its examples say, "look, here he didn't see the danger, and lost, etc." There is not corresponding (positive) instruction on how to avoid the danger. Another way of saying this. Say it was a book on war, called "Danger in War." It is full of examples showing, for instance, a soldier standing up instead of crouching in his foxhole. He thus gets wounded or killed. This book says, by using examples in this way, "see, that was dangerous." This is interesting, but I can easily look at my own games and find plenty of examples of me succumbing in dangerous positions. So, why do I need this book? That said, the examples are good, the writing is good, and the chapter titles (thought-related factors, position-related factors) are interesting, but I can't help but wonder why a book like this does not have more instructional content.

Customer Reviews:
It's Okay..........2007-08-23
I was really excited to get this book because I thought it was going to walk me through the steps of creating competencies and how to put them into place. The first chapter was great. After that it sort of drags a little. Each chapter is written by a different person or group of people so it is more like an accumulation of articles rather than something that is specifically useful. The information is still good and I am looking forward to finishing the book (almost done), but it definitely has not kept my interest. There are some spelling errors in the book as well, which tend to make it seem like it is not read enough to be considered a reliable resource. It is alright, but don't have the expectation that you will have enough information to implement these systems after reading the book.
Outstanding Book.......2007-02-10
This is an outstanding book that succinctly explains a simple and practical approach to the identification, assessment and management of talent in the current, dynamic operating business environment. The book plainly gives advice on how to avoid high staff turnover, poor morale, and poor performance.
Here is a book that not only "tells it like it is," but offers visionary insights into "how it needs to be." The authors ignite the imagination, expand the possibilities, and offer practical strategies any firm can use to effectively develop, retain and utilise talent for the benefit of an organisation and enter the fluid, flexible future. Managers at all levels will cheer the sanity the authors suggest.
The book is written in an easy to follow and understand way that will help you draw career plans that enhance the morale of the workforce and generate and maintain high performance in your organization. It is full of straightforward, efficient, clear techniques for evaluating, planning, and developing top performing employees to ensure that your organization will be a success.
Exceptional Talent Management Resource.......2006-02-23
This handbook offers valuable and process rich descriptions of how to create a talent management system and how to develop competencies to work within that system for consultants and executives alike. The handbook also provides practical suggestions on creating performance management systems along with several other support tools common to talent management systems including compensation, 360 feedback, training and coaching.
Good reference material.......2005-08-20
A few of the articles are stellar, but many are so-so. Nevertheless, it is very comprehensive covering topics from A to Z, so it is a good reference tool. Definitely for the HR professional, not the line manager.
AN EXCELLENT COLLECTION OF INSIGHTFUL CONTRIBUTIONS........2005-05-20
The concept of talent management is a systematic, proactive approach to the integration of business and organizational planning, assessment, succession planning, performance improvement, competency enhancement, and career growth. Contributors explain: how a talent management plan and process are developed; the four steps to creating a system; how competencies create economic value; finding high-potential talent throughout the organization; and much more. Breaks important, new ground.
