A suggestion.......2007-01-25
Buy this book if you are a destructive-minded, good-humored high school or college student with strong feelings against people in general. Reading this will give you that postal fix that most people fix through computer games these days. It features homemade flamethrowers, helicopters that drop objects on other objects with menacing claws, irresistibly painful music to listen to, violent films and performance art, and anything else that you had in your subconscious waiting room.
Reading this book covers a large panoramic of the future that should have been more widely discovered before the fact. Be sure to catch Throbbing Gristle's commentary on the War on Information and the future of human stupidity.
Industrial Culture Handbook features interviews with Mark Pauline, Boyd Rice (Non), Monte Cazazza, Johanna Went, and other crazy disturbance-lovers that will knock your socks off!
Even if you aren't young, this is one hell of an interesting read.
Happy reading!
Fascinating Compendium Of Provocations.......2006-09-20
Flipping through THE INDUSTRIAL CULTURE HANDBOOK at this point in time, it surprises me how well much of it stands up. The varied individuals present here are all as scholarly as they are unhinged, which is to say that you're guranteed to be shocked into debate and though, but will always also be intrigued and impressed.
Something apparent to me now that escaped my notice when I first discovered this book (circa 1990, roughly at the age of 19 or 20) was how well of a job editor V. Vale does in making a case for the individuals featured here as the center of an art-historical movement, a late-20th-century descendant of forbears like surrealism, dada (the band Cabaret Voltaire took their name from dada-era Zurich inspirations), lettrism and the situationists. I'm certain that this would be denied by the varied interviewees here - Throbbing Gristle, Survival Research Labaratories, Monte Cazazza and Boyd Rice all are fairly non-doctrinaire about the things they do, and all are especially memorable. But while the term "Industrial Culture" lacks the gravitas of "situationism," methinks Vale may still have been onto something.
There's a lot of slightly academic (or at least systematic) seriousness and disruptive stunt-making here - aside from Throbbing Gristle's extremely memorable musical/sonic terror-as-social commentary and SRL's robot roadkill animatronic dismemberings, we also get an unforgettable billboard defacement and an intersection-blocking pile of wet concrete being explained away as a sculpture. But it should also be noted that there's actually also a lot of humor, and a highly individualized lust for life (as a component of creativity), taken to fairly unearthly extremes. Not necessarily for the easily offended, but still vital and interesting.
Probably the place to start with the RE/Search series; which is always intriguing, but sometimes fails to rise above hipsterism. This volume is priceless.

NUTS, SCREWS AND BOLTS.......2000-09-20
This book has a great introduction by music journalist Jon Savage, but I found the articles/interviews a bit too academic, overlong and quite literally, exhausting. It's hard to believe this book was published 17 years ago - industrial music as a genre only became really popular in the early 90s with Ministry, Nine Inch Nails etc. Of these artists Throbbing Gristle, Chris & Cosey, Cabaret Voltaire, Non, Monte Cazazza, SPK, Z'ev and Johanna Went are listed here on amazon.com. The Reference section at the end of each article is wonderful -- I especially love the Library of Genesis P. Orridge. There is a useful index and an enticing Re/Search Catalog at the end. Those who like confrontational artists like Lydia Lunch, Clint Catalyst and Michelle Tea will find much to appreciate here. This book should be read together with Tape Delay, published at the same time but now hard-to-find and not even listed on amazon. All in all, one of the best Re/Search publications.
Fascinating and fun ý much more than just a source book.......2000-06-03
"Re/Search #6/7: Industrial Culture Handbook" is more than just a compendium of information about early industrial music groups and their discographies. Although the book does contain a good deal of hard information, the best parts of it are the lengthy interviews in which the artists expound on their personal philosophies - some of which are quite paranoid and delusional - often straying far from the subject of industrial music. "Industrial Culture Handbook" also does a very good job of collecting the artists who truly were on the cutting edge of the experimental/industrial movement of the late '70s and early '80s: Throbbing Gristle, Monte Cazazza, SPK, Cabaret Voltaire, Boyd Rice/NON, Z'ev, and Mark Pauline of Survival Research Laboratories (SRL). Less important but still interesting are the sections in the book about R&N and the two French gentlemen who published the magazine "Sordide Sentimental." The only mystery about this book is the inclusion of performance artist Johanna Went, who had very little to do with the industrial subculture of 20 or so years ago. The section about her is the one low point in an otherwise fascinating and worthwhile book.
Most valuable addition to your home!.......1999-04-07
This wee encyclopedia of non-traditional behavior is a charming and enlightening review of people that for far too long have gone unnoticed and underappreciated. From this point,I began to expand my music and video collection, something I'd given up. Buy multiple copies & give as gifts!

Book Description
The Sopranos has captured audiences and awards with its portrayal of life in an Italian-American crime family. But it is more than just a mob show. It provokes us, excites us, and pries back the exterior to peek into the darkest parts of our souls. The plotlines and characters raise spiritual issues that leave us questioning our own beliefs. The Gospel According to Tony Soprano explores the many reasons why this hit series has connected so deeply with American culture and exposes the mysteries of faith, family, life, and God that permeate the show.
Published to coincide with the debut of the highly anticipated fourth season of the HBO series, The Gospel According to Tony Soprano is a fascinating book that looks through the violence and drama to the deeper moral issues. Spiritual teacher and writer Chris Seay analyzes the characters and their all-too-human behaviors, and helps us evaluate our own humanity, and ultimately our relationship with God.
Accessible, witty, and enlightening, The Gospel According to Tony Soprano is essential reading for every fan of the television show, and for anyone who wants to examine the larger questions of right and wrong.

What A World, What A World.......2004-10-12
This is a good book that could have been a great book.
When David Chase created "The Sopranos" he intended to provide a lens by which we could examine our daily habits, values and aspirations. [Source: his interviews on the Season 1 DVD.]
Sort of like a mobbed-up Simpsons, I guess.
Chris Seay took the bait and used parts of the series' plot and characterizations to create a good philosophical primer for aficionados of the series. Some select observations:
A.J. may be the most spiritually mature character in the series.
Dr. Melfi ignores reality [Tony's evil nature] and places false blame while offering an escape from the truth.
Betrayal can only happen if yuou love.
Never say you hate life - that's blasphemy.
There could have been much more here...but, collecting these things in the way in which he does, Chris Seay adds to our awareness.
A Book for all fans of the Sopranos.......2004-03-06
The Gospel According to Tony Soprano is a guide for thoughtful reflection of this TV mafia drama. I enjoyed each chapter and am buying a copy for all the friends that watch the show with me each sunday. You will laugh, think, and even consider these characters in light of their moral dillemas and spiritual condition. Enjoy!
Considering "The Sopranos" as contemporary morality plays.......2003-03-31
I remember the original book in this particular sub-genre of American literature, "The Gospel According to Peanuts." Since Robert L. Short published that little volume in 1965 we have seen many similar efforts using such hot popular culture properties as "The Simpsons" and "Harry Potter." Of course, if you start from the premise that any and all narratives either conform to or violate scripture by definition. The corollary is that the more scripture you know, the more you can find relevant in any popular culture text you look at, whether it be a comic strip or a television show. However, even from that premise you have to admit that "The Gospel According to Tony Soprano" represents the extreme in this little genre since the Soprano crime family is about as godless as you can get on television.
Chris Seay is interested in exploring the many reasons why the hit HBO series "The Sopranos" connects so deeply with viewers (despite the title the volume looks at all of the characters on the series and not just Tony). The obvious answer, from my perspective, is because it is a well-written, well-acted television series and most of what is on the tube stinks. However, as a pastor Seay sees the hit series as exposing the mysteries of faith, family, life, and God. Consequently, Seay uses "The Sopranos" as a source of contemporary parables. However, what is surprising is that most of the analysis is done without explicit reference to scripture. When Seay does cite particular verses they are general declarations, such as "Love covers over a multitude of sins" and "He who loves [his son] is careful to discipline him." This is not a chapter and verse explication of the series from a Christian perspective heavy with annotations and scriptural citations; the endnotes are more likely to cite publications by "The New York Times" as the book of Proverbs.
Obviously the big issues here are the questions of what is right and wrong, and the moral conflict of the characters on "The Sopranos" is a large part of what makes it work. Morality is a large part of religion, but the terms are by no means equivalent. Consequently, I would challenge the idea that God permeates the show. Carmela Soprano's faith is a large part of her character, but from that perspective no other character in the show comes close. But saying that religion is not a big part of the characters on "The Sopranos" does not take away from Seay's ability to use the series for religious purposes. Still, in chapter after chapter it really seems to me as if the religious arguments Seay makes at the end of each chapter could have been made on non-religious terms as well. Ironically, readers who do not see themselves as being Christians may well enjoy this book more than those who do not, because the final revelation here is that "The Gospel According to Tony Soprano" really is more popular culture than religion.
On those grounds this is an interesting little book for fans of the series. I enjoyed the chapter on "Carmela Soprano: The Queen of the Castle" more than "Tony Soprano: A Neo-Solomon from New Jersey," but that is probably due in part to the fact I find her to be the more complex character. Livia Soprano is dealt with in a chapter entitled "Isolation: Ducks, Delusions, and Depression," but obviously an entire book could be devoted to this particular mother-son relationship; Dr. Melfi has been going at it for four seasons and look how far she has gotten with it in her sessions with Tony. I also thought the chapter "Psychology: Tomato Sauce for your Ass" had several interesting insights. Consequently, I would be happy to recommend this volume to fans of "The Sopranos" who would be interested in thinking about the series on a deeper level of meaning.
extraordinary idea... young writer.......2003-01-19
this book is a fabulous idea: to creatively enter the intertextuality of story and spirit... themes that are truly the most elemental issues of not only the sopranos, but each of our lives. i recommend it.
the author accomplishes the above with courage, authenticity, grace... and with the skill of a new writer. i think seay will be a major voice in the years ahead... and i look forward to reading him as he grows.
Clip this book.......2003-01-18
The author is more interested in gospel than "our thing". This book appears to be directed toward an interesting minority: soprano-watching bible-thumpers. A few interesting observations about the hit HBO series, otherwise, its for the choir.

Seinfeld is more than just a TV show, and David Wild's tribute is more than just an episode guide. As he states in his introduction, "...for me, Seinfeld is one of those rare redeemers of popular culture; like Sinatra, pasta, or the Beatles, Seinfeld shows that sometimes the masses get things exactly right." Woven around Wild's brief and opinionated summaries of 164 episodes are trivia quizzes, a history of the show's development, a review of the real Soup Nazi's restaurant, and most interesting of all, comments from many of the guest stars who have appeared in Seinfeld. Even George Steinbrenner makes an appearance and he reveals why his much anticipated guest appearance was cut from the show. Many TV and movie tie-in titles feel rushed and opportunistic, but Seinfeld: The Totally Unauthorized Tribute is clearly the work of a real fan, and it's a lot of fun. Favorite fact? Jason Alexander and Holly Hunter made their first movie appearances in the same film. - Simon Leake

Okay..........2005-08-11
I loved the Seinfeld episode, but this book doesn't really do it justice. For all you, who like love, and dating in New York City with a quirky "Seinfeld" character, try the Blind Date King.... it's dating and romance in NYC. A quick read, funny and heartwarming.
David Wild Must Die!.......2002-03-11
Seinfeld is a great show, best sitcom ever, so any book about it is gonna get at least 2 stars on the merit of it's subject matter.... HOWEVER.... I feel this to be just about the worst Seinfeld book possible because the author is a pretentious no-talent...who writes in idiotic circles....
It's good but needs more details in the episode guide.......1999-11-08
A good tribute to Seinfeld but the very un detailed episodeguide ruins the main part of the book. The rest is exellent includinga lot of celebrity's all wrote about Seinfeld. The cast members film credits and all.
Nice cover - shame about the book........1999-02-25
A disapointing read. Various sections read like hastily written padding and there is no real analysis of the Seinfeld phenomenon. The author also indulges in a lots of 'cutesy' chat with the reader, most of which is pretty well incomprehensible to a reader like me from the UK. If you're looking for a book like this try 'Seinfield Universe'. (A note to US fans: here in the UK Seinfeld is virtually unknown - it goes out at 11.15pm Tuesday nights on BBC2 and gets no trailers or promotion. How odd then that the BBC should release their own UK edition of 'Seinfield Universe'...)
A one-stop authority on Seinfeld lore.......1999-02-25
David Wild has created a single source of trivia about the show that has no equal. As Sein-withdrawl takes it's toll, the "Unauthorized Tribute" makes it a little easier to go on with life. I would like to know if David is going to "finish" the book by adding the remaining episode descriptions to a 2nd edition? Thanks for preserving the memories.
Book Description
A volume of specially-commissioned essays dealing with the attempts to create a pan-European film production movement in the 1920s and 1930s, and the reactions of the American film industry to these plans to rival its hegemony. The book has an impressive array of top scholars from both America and Europe, including Thomas Elsaesser, Kristin Thompson and Ginette Vincendeau, as well as essays by some younger scholars who have recently completed new archival research. It also includes a number of primary documents selected by the contributors to illuminate their arguments and provide a stimulus to further research.
"Film Europe" and "Film America" is the latest volume in the series Exeter Studies in Film History, and represents a major contribution to cinema scholarship as well as reflecting a strong interest in an area of study currently being developed in university departments and at the British Film Institute.

Finally a How-To!.......2007-09-15
Good overall analysis and methodology for approaching process re-design projects. Very practical and well written. Includes strategies for avoiding common pitfalls.
Very good for newbies in process improvement field.......2007-08-16
I enjoyed this book because of:
1) clear, coherent logic
2) it's very practical from cover to cover - everything you need to know before modeling processes you can find here and use it in your work on the very next day
3) the language - it's plain and definitely supports better adoption of the tools described. I also like the authors' delicate humor :)
As a whole - two thumbs up, 5 stars.
Good Book for a Foundation.......2007-08-09
I was recommended this book from BPMN Essentials course I recently took and just finished the book. It has a great deal of examples and suggestions for how to perform process modelling, which I like.
Excellent Business Process Modeling Book.......2006-11-29
Everything started with the creation of a two days workshop: Workflow Process Modeling. The authors have continually improved the workshop with participants' feedback and ideas based on their own hands-on consulting work with many organizations. The book is very well structured and it is based on real world experience. The structure is simple with no unnecessary parts that usually fill other books with redundant content. The content is not a mere recount of personal experiences: there are plenty of references to other publications. Plus, you will find good humor in the book that makes it even more readable.
Although the authors declared their work aimed at application development work as a final outcome, the book is focused very much on the business side with emphasis on process workflow. Nowadays the specialization pushes further and further apart the role of a business analyst from the system analyst, while in the past some would refer to these roles as one. This book might not be very useful for a system analyst because it is not very technically oriented. You will not find yourself drown under zillions of diagrams created with a specific software package, but you will get instead a method of how to approach business analysis from a broad, yet practical, perspective. The book does not bother even to talk too much about UML. I found that refreshing and extremely useful. I have been searching for a book that is more like a thought provoking companion rather than a software tool manual and this book fits that description.
Workflow Modeling is a comprehensive book. It does not focus on a particular stage of business analysis. It provides an inventory of areas the professional business process consultant would have to consider and the rationale for each one of them. Some readers might not agree with the little amount of space dedicated to class modeling which is almost inexistent. On the plus side, the authors talk about approach in dealing with project stakeholders, pitfalls, team building and difficulties and what questions to ask in various situations. The authors appreciate the importance of the final delivery, how to map the road between the as-is process to to-be process and understand the structure of the organization. I found many things that were said here very realistic and valuable; I could relate them to my own experience. The book does not say much about class modeling, but it talks a lot about swimlane diagrams and use cases analysis.
You can use Workflow Modeling to design your own work template that suits your style and formation. You can come back , re-read some parts or the whole book (I have done that) and still get something out of it. I recommend the book as a good investment that will not go out of fashion very soon.
Workflow Modeling - This Book Flows..........2006-09-16
Workflow Modeling serves both as a primer to a process approach to management, and a step-by-step guide for modeling the workflow required to achieve the process goals. The skills it teaches are critical as modeling is often the first step within larger improvement projects of all kinds.
Beyond modelling itself, the authors provide the context for process issues by considering organisational mission, strategy, goals and culture within which design and improvement projects usually occur.
Readers will find lots of case studies and vignettes that clearly illustrate the points and enliven the book in no small way.
