Book Description
Drawing examples from a wide range of African cultures, this ground-breaking book expands the continuing discourse on the aesthetic and cultural significance of cloth, body and dress in Africa and moves beyond contextual analysis to consider the broader application of cloth and dress to art forms in other media. In blending the concerns of Art History and Anthropology, the authors focus on the art patronage systems that stimulate production, consumption, commodification and cultural meaning, and emphasize the overriding importance of cloth to aesthetic and cultural expression in African societies. Through this approach they reveal complex processes that involve a series of actors, including textile artists, commissioning-patrons and consumer-patrons, all of whom shape cloth and dress traditions. These individuals not only influence production, but are a key to understanding the cultural meaning of cloth and dress and, by extension, the body in Africa.

Pussey!
Customer Reviews:
That's "Pooh-say".......2007-08-28
PUSSEY! is a collection of short works by Dan Clowes that skewers the comic industry. Dan Pussey works his way up from a neurotic childhood to a position as artist in the Infinity Comics bullpen, finally becoming the comics superstar of the nineties... but in the end, what's it all worth? The stories are hilarious, but there's definitely an uncomfortable vibe running throughout the book, as the situations contained within are one step removed from real life in the industry. Stan Lee, Art Spiegelman, Los Bros. Hernandez, and other creators, both modern and classic, get their turns - almost always for the worse. I never could understand how an entire movie came out of the short "Art School Confidential" (contained in TWENTIETH CENTURY EIGHTBALL); however, the saga of Dan Pussey has more than enough material for the silver screen. So get ahead of the curve, read PUSSEY!, and impress your friends when the preview is shown at your next movie outing.
A bit harsh, Clowes!!.......2007-08-02
It's PuSAY! Man this book is a true look into the original comic book nerds, not the wanna be cool/nerd hipster readers of today. Clowes' hatred of costumed and superhero comics and of STAN LEE himself is never more apparent than in this book. So take it with a grain of salt if you're a Spidey fan. If you are a comic nerd and can laugh about it, pick this book up!
I knew Dan Pussey!.......2001-05-09
...and still do. DP is a tragic figure, instantly recognizable to anyone who has spent any time around comics, or for that matter, any "social scene" based upon collectables (video games, stamps, ducks). And that mouth... those teeth... that nearly unbreakable faith in his powers. And oh yeah, "Pussey!" is also the best send-up of the comic/convention/geek scene ever written. Not to take away from Clowes' undeniable genius as an artist and writer, but much of Pussey!'s effectiveness is due to the medium itself, which as Clowes himself writes is "the most versitile art form" and puts into several panels what might take a "pure" writer several chapters (or more likely, none at all).
Clowes pulls no punches. We have met Pussey, and he is us.
I was that Pussey.......2001-04-26
Yes, this comic is possibly the most hysterical thing you'll ever read, if you've ever read comics or had a lingering doubt you might be a nerd. I idolized the comic's hero Dan Pussey immediately as an archtype par extraodinaire. I recommend the book to those in their late thirties and ready to laugh comfortably at what they once were. Or at least I was.
there has never been a better satire of the comic industry.......1999-06-15
the best send up of the comics industry ever, includes moronic super-hero artists, opportunistic publishers, and a glimpse into the future....
Book Description
1871. The object of the Saint was to illustrate the goodness and forbearance of Almighty God in bringing him, in spite of his loathsome manifold errors and infirmities, to this blessed haven of rest; that so others who were in the same state in which he had been, might not sleep in despair, and say, I cannot. St. Augustine speaks of his past sins in terms of strong condemnation, yet personally, of unconcern; as shocking in themselves, but as what he had no more to do with, in that he had condemned them, and they had been washed away by Baptism.
Download Description
This is the classic autobiography work of a great saint including his theocentric testimonial of his conversion experience and his growing understanding of God. It is a moving depiction of the life and experiences of a believer from a different age. A must have for those who wish to move into a deeper relationship with God!

A Must Have Book!.......2005-12-20
St. Augustine's effect on the Christian religion can not be understated. This timeless work should be read by all religious and spiritual persons regardless of their path of preference if only to just understand where so many of Christianity concepts and dogma originate.
The Bishop Of Hippo........2005-10-09
Aurelius Augustinus 354-430 AD.
He was born in Thagesta in Numidia (North-Africa).The Confessions' has two parts. The first part is a kind of autobiography and the second part is a commentary to the first chapters of Genesis.
He taught rhetorics first in Carthago in Africa, later in Milan in Italy. But after a while he developed an aversion not only for rhetorics ( he began to consider it as useless and conceited and as a pool of sins ) but also for his fellow-man.
He began to show neurotic behaviour like having a fainting fit without apparent cause. It's for those reasons that psychologists like to study Augustine's Confessions.
As a result of all this, Augustine became a Christian and he was one of the first to found a monastery. Later on he became bishop of Hippo in North-Africa.
In the second part of 'The confessions' he tries to explain the first chapters of Genesis. His plan was to comment on the whole Bible but he soon understood that this was an impossible task for one man.
Nevertheless he's is considered as the Father of modern Theology because of his comments.
To give two examples: When the Bible says that God created man to His image, Augustine explains that it means that man knows the difference between good and evil just like God does, it doesn't mean a physical resemblance.
Another interesting thought is about Creation. Creation is not limited in space and time: since God is everywhere, Creation is also everywhere and goes on till eternity.
As conclusion I should mention that 'The Confessions'is also important because it is the first publication in Antiquity in which an author reveals his most inner feelings
Beautiful and Profound.......2003-02-01
Augustine relates the tale of his life as an unbeliever and his conversion. It is a remarkable picture of a mother's faithful prayers for her son and the power and mercy of God, by which he eventually became an important figure in the early church.
St. Monica, Augustine's mother, stood out as a remarkable woman of God. Her husband did not wish their son to be baptized, so she respected custom and obeyed his wishes. She prayed many years for the redemption of her son, and without her patience and faithfulness we may have been deprived of her son's beautiful, inspiring books.
The translation offered by the MacMillan Publishing Company is comparatively easy for the modern reader to understand, and much less likely to induce sleep than many other available translations. I first picked it up as a child, having found it on my father's shelves, and found it understandable even then.
Whether or not you are of Christian beliefs, this is a beautiful, deeply spiritual book and I highly recommend it.
A book that you will never forget.......2001-05-27
First time i read this book was about 5 years ago
< i am 22 now> , at that age i was taking any relgious matter so much seriously and i could never the big effect of this book on my spirit , it is really a great experience to see the deep inside of the heart of another person ...st.augustine is simply saying all about himself in this book , it is a reall confession as if the whole world is his priest , i could imagine i could say all what he sais in his confession even in spoken words not in written ones as he did . well now after 5 years and i am taking all this religious stuff less seriously than i used to do this book still got a big influence on my heart at least i need to have a look into it every few monthes.
Excellent Book, Wrong Translation.......2000-04-17
"The Confessions" is undoubtedly one of the great books of western civilization, and the paradigm of the autobiography genre. But Henry Chadwick's modern translation available through Oxford University Press is a more vibrant and exacting translation. Pusey's translation is too Victorian, which casts too much of the Patristic writer in a Victorian mode of being. Augustine was a preeminent rhetorician, which comes out more brilliantly in Chadwick's translation. Moreover, the philosophical arguments advanced by Augustine are more clearly stated in the Chadwick translation. The hardcover or paperback version from Oxford isn't any more expensive, but significantly better translated.

Book Description
A morbidly fascinating mixture of bungled executions ,strange last requests, and classic final one-liners from medieval times to the present day.
Sometimes it's hard to be an executioner, trying to keep someone from popping up to make a quip when they should have spectacularly sunk without a trace. Or to be told that the condemned to the guillotine won't have a last drink for fear of "completely losing his head." The business of death can be absurd, and nothing illustrates this better than these tales of the gruesome and frankly ridiculous ways in which a number of ill-fated unfortunates met (or failed to meet) their maker.
Did you know:
When Sir Thomas More was ordered to position his head on the block, he said "though you have warrant to cut off my head, you have none to cut off my beard?"
When the guillotine took three strokes to sever the neck of Isabeau Herman, the mob attempted to stone the executioner to death for cruelty?
After the English hanged the pirate Captain Kidd they chained his body to a stake on the Thames River as a warning to seafarers?
From the strange to the gruesome, from the weird to the completely unbelievable, The Executioner Always Chops Twice is popular history at its best: witty, lively, and wonderfully bizarre.
Customer Reviews:
Gory, But Gripping.......2006-02-09
Mr Abbott initially gives us an overview of some of the more grisly ways to meet an end, including dismemberment and deep-frying in oil. However, the presentation is detailed without being nauseating, which is quite a trick. Still, it's certainly enough to make one cringe.
The anecdotes are referenced enough to allow follow up research, without being overdone. This is an entertaining read, with a certain amount of black humor mixed in of necessity. It covers errors in execution, in reprieve, mobs and crowds, horrific mistakes that caused gory ends, and the people who went to their death with dignity, humor, or kicking and screaming. In this way, it gives a measure of insight into the condemned mind, and that of the executioner and crowd. Highly recommended.
Blunders? More like normal occurances to me.......2005-10-16
The book describes beheadings as normally hard to perform, yet each "blunder" is just that it took more than one swing. Electrocutions that took more than a couple jolts of electricity; firing squads that took more than one volley, these aren't blunders, just what sometimes happens. The author has taken too much liberty with the term "blunder". I was hoping for some wild, outlandish stories, but I was disappointed. Much of the text is taken from elsewhere, so I really can't comment on the author's writing style. One thing I don't understand are the little blurbs at the end of the stories that are totally unrelated and sometimes are for different execution methods than those currently being discussed. The book is physically small and is about 230 pages, so it's probably more like 100 real pages. Also, the print seems poor and the few drawings included are very crude. The only thing I'm enjoying about the book are the historical facts of what happened to who.
Interesting Read--An Entertaining Look At A Grisly Subject.......2005-04-12
I started reading this book expecting to find yet another collection of stories containing a kernel of historical truth and a mound of anecdotal inaccuracies. Too often the latter are added simply to tintillize the reader without bothering to check further into whether or not what is reported is the truth.
I must say I was pleasantly surprised to find that Mr. Abbott not only knows his historical facts but is able to present them in such a way that the reader does not want to put the book down. He does not spare us grisly details, yet does not overemphasize the gore. The stories of decapitations and hangings gone horribly wrong help us to understand why executions provided a unique form of "entertainment" for the myriad crowds who gathered around to watch the show. It also makes one glad that we are supposedly more humane today, although, as the book points out, even death by lethal injection does not insure the process will go swiftly and without any problems.
One aspect of the book is the manner in which it helps one to understand just what it was like to be an executioner. The job often was passed down from father to son, and there were reputations to be maintained. Other then for the occasional rogue, executioners were by and large men who tried to dispatch their victims as quickly and painlessly as possible. Too often rowdy crowds who hurled insults and even eggs and such at these men who were, after all, just doing their job, sometimes would result in a nervous executioner. And nervous executioners were prone to making mistakes, misjudgments and sometimes would have to literally run for their own lives if the job did not go well or if the sympathies of the mob were with the condemned. It was the first time I have read something from the point of view of the frightening looking man with the black mask over his head. Certainly not a popular profession!
I highly recommend this book for entertainment as well as knowledge of a subject few have endeavored to write about. I gave it a four simply because I found Mr. Abbot's habit of adding little stories after each chapter a bit distracting and out of place. Otherwise, if you have any interest in executions and believe in the motto "what can go wrong, will go wrong", even on the scaffold, treat yourself to this book!
Mr. Abbot does it again.......2005-03-01
Another book of appalling anecdotes, about executions gone dreadfully wrong. Mr Abbot demonstrates that even something as horrific as burning at the stake can be screwed up-- and made worse!

Kurt Weill's songs are wonderful to sing-.......2007-02-14
I've always wanted to learn some cabaret songs! These have an operatic or art-song flair, which I enjoy. They each tell a story, based mostly on what had taken place during the 1930's, in Berlin during the war era.
My vocal coach reccomended it to me, as part of my repertoire, and I can't thank her enough. The songs are in mostly German and French, with one song , "Buddy on the Nightshift"- in English.
I reccomend this book, if you want a change from singing traditional opera arias, but still want to sing in a operatic manner-and want to sing something with the cabaret sound, something that can be jazzy too.

Born in 1900 into a German Jewish family, Kurt Weill gained fame as composer of The Threepenny Opera and other politically charged works written by Bertolt Brecht. He reinvented himself in America; by his death in 1950 he had written several popular Broadway shows ("Lady in the Dark") and one indisputably classic tune, "September Song." This solid biography capably covers Weill's life (including a tactful account of his unconventional marriage to Lotte Lenya), but concentrates on the music, refuting charges that Weill's American work betrayed his talent in search of commercial success.
Customer Reviews:
The Definitive Biography of a Musical Genius.......2003-07-01
Very often, scholarship on Kurt Weill tends to favor his German works such as "The Threepenny Opera" or "Mahagonny," however Sanders account spans the entire length of Weill's career. From his beginnings in Berlin with Busoni, to his German hits with Brecht, to his flight to America and "Johnny Johnson," to his Broadway successes with "Knickerbocker Holiday," "Lady in the Dark," and "One Touch of Venus." Sanders presents each era of Weill's life with the same objectivity. He calls for an approach to Weill that encompasses Weill's entire career.
If you are thinking of doing any research on Kurt Weill, THIS is the place to start.
Way beyond the Three Penny Opera.......1999-08-18
I just finished this book and was mightily impressed. My esteemed predecessor in these reviews has summarized the book very well, leaving me the opportunity to comment on a single important aspect of the book. When you mention Weill's name, people think of only one thing (if they know him at all). The Three Penny Opera. This book emphatically puts his '20 something work with Brecht in perspective, showing that he continued to grow and develop throughout his career. The narrative is keen and passionate. The details of the creative periods and production periods of various works are gripping. My net response is: there is a lot more to this man's creative output than just The Three Penny Opera and Mahagony (son of 3-penny?). He deserves to be heard; will he?
An old cliché: a must for all music lovers.......1998-11-14
Biographies (especially those of people from the entertainment industry) have become a fad since the early 80's, and most of them, however entertaining, don't add much to our knowledge of their subject and time. One admirable exception is this account about Kurt Weill and his lifetime by Ronald Sanders. Since the very beginning, Mr. Sanders manages to give us a vivid portrait of how was Germany since the years before Weill was born, how was life like in those days for Jewish people there, and the great composer's musical roots: his father was a Cantor, and many of his ancestors were professional or amateur musicians. To say only that Mr. Sanders' account is full of painstainkingly researched details would be unjust, for he goes far beyond that. He uses all these details to make us understand and feel in depth the makings of a remarkable career that unfortunately didn't last so long (Weill died prematurely, at 50). Mr. Sanders not only treats us to an unforgettable tour of 20th Century's troubled first half but also gives us a thorough knowledge of how music evolved from the days of Ferrucio Busoni and Gustav Mahler to Kurt Weill's works in the U.S., with lots of information about other great artists like Arnold Schoenberg, Bertolt Brecht, Lotte Lenya, how Weill created such masterpieces as "Dreigroschenoper", "Knickerbocker Holiday", "Lady in the Dark", and so on. You can say that this is a cliché, but, if you are, like me, interested in anything related to the best music that was produced in the 20th Century, don't miss "The Days Grow Short". And if you are already a fan of Kurt Weill's, this book will make you even more appreciative of him and his music. I recommend that you read this biography with your CD player on. You'll enjoy it even more when Mr. Sanders speaks of Weill's perennial creations, like "Mack the Knife", "September Song", "Speak Low", "Lost in the Stars", "My Ship"...

IN THE MATTER OF ONE MAC THE KNIFE.......2007-09-01
I have reviewed some of the Communist master playwright Bertolt Brecht's later more consciously political and didactic plays elsewhere in this space. The play under review is an earlier work, before he fully committed himself to communism, and is an adaptation of John Gay's 18th century Beggar's Opera to the modern theater. The subject at hand is a look at the way those in the lower depths of society survive under emergent capitalist conditions, especially the main character, one MacHealth a.k.a. Mac the Knife. As such Brecht's adaptation has given no end of problems for those critics who want to claim it for the communist cause. It is far too universal in it sentiment about human nature in the capitalist era and therefore properly is a transitional to his later more consciously partisan works like The Measures Taken and The Mother. Thus one should take it for is own worth as a look at survival in a seemingly Hobbesian world.
The plot line is rather simply-MacHealth, a former British imperial soldier, has struck out on his own in dog-eat dog London and has created a name for himself as a master criminal and seducer of the ladies. Other forces including the constabulary, a small disreputable but conniving businessman and, let us be politically correct here, some sexual workers combine in an attempt to deprive Mac of life and limb. However luck and a royal coronation combine to thwart those best laid plans. All of this is performed in a light operatic format that allows Brecht to wax poetic at humanity's plight through a series of sharply-etched songs in which he collaborated with the legendary Kurt Weill.
Above I referred to some controversy about Brecht's intention in this work. That the roguish, incipient capitalist MacHealth is saved in the end through royal intervention has caused some commentators to argue for the organic connection between the rising capitalist class and the monarchy in England. Others have noted the similarities in appetite between the lumpenproletariat element as represented by MacHealth and his criminal crew and the developing capitalism of the time. I think that both views overdraw what one can take out of Gay's story or Brecht's adaptation. This story line is much more conducive to a generalized treatment on the nature of survival in a world that has broken from its agrarian past and has not yet stabilized it bourgeois norms of propriety. Some of these same characteristics were played out in the development of American capitalism, especially in the Wild West. But as presented here this is only a rudimentary outline of where things could go. I stand by my comment in the first paragraph about the unmediated nature of Brecht's take on Gay's little work. He most definitely got more focused on the nature of the human plight under capitalism latter as he developed as a Marxist.
A rather boring translation of the great Dreigroschenoper.......1999-03-01
One has to know and understand the original German text of the Dreigroschenoper to be really able to judge the quality of the English translations. This one, used among others by Helen Schneider on her album with Weill songs, has nothing of the sarcasms of the German lyrics. Better read the 1954 translation of Marc Blitzstein or the translation made by Frank McGuinness in the early 1990s.
Probably the best translation to capture Brecht's intentions.......1998-03-19
Of all the translations on the market, this one is the best -- most are watered-down, tepid versions. Manheim & Willet's was used in the late 1970's revival of the piece by the New York Shakespeare Festival, which starred the late Raul Julia and Ellen Greene (of "Little Shop of Horrors" fame, in the role originally intended for Lotte Lenya).

Customer Reviews:
Good for departmental and executive managers.......2007-03-14
This book is geared more towards the executive manager, but it has some advice that is useful for any new employee. Some of it talked about the importance of first impressions, and what you need to achieve in order to earn credibility in a new position. It also wrote about the psychological effects of going from an individual contributor position to supervisory/management position. Overall, it hasn't been that helpful to me but I will keep it on my shelf for the future.
very bad book written in a very inaccesible language.......2006-06-01
this book is extremly bad,,too mucho technich and encripted,,with stupid examples and long long lines,,saying nothing,, this book is so bad,,that I did not finish reading it,, is so boring,,if I could I would give 0 star to this book,,,I highly reccommend the book "the first time manager,,,"
that book is master and exceptional,,written in a very simple a open language,,this book is 100% excellent..
Based on the wrong premise.......2006-02-22
The authors of this book seem to believe that the best individual performers should become managers - that is not something that I can agree with. It is full of pompous language (I do not want to see the word empowerment again in my whole life) instead of real-world advice. I simultaneously bought the book First-Time Manager and it is much better.
Practical and Thorough.......2005-06-06
This was the first management book I read and I didn't realize how good it was until I read a couple of others. This book has the most thorough and practical advice of all the management books I've read.
No book is going to give you the magic bullet of management and this book seems to acknowledge that. If you enjoy being treated like an adult and aren't out looking for a "Snake Oil" magic management cure-all I would recommend this book (If you enjoyed "Who Moved My Cheese" might I recommend you stop reading this review and go look at "Frog and Toad Are Friends").
Also, while the title claims this book is focused on the "First 12 Months" of your new management position most of the methods and examples it gives aren't specific to that time period--although that is the best time to start.
This book helped me with my mangement review--again!.......2005-01-20
I read this book several years ago, and I have used the pragmatic advice over and over in my career. Chapter three has been particularly valuable because it has kept me focused upon the principle of making my boss look good!
Time after time, Mr. Betof and Mr. Harwood present the difficult choices and harsh realities of leadership and give you guidance as to what to do. I don't agree with everything they advise, but without question they warn you about what you will face when you are in charge and at least give you a practical plan to work from.
If you aspire to lead, I would recommend reading this book now and then watch leaders to observe how they deal with their challenges and decide what you think works. I applaud the authors' effort to outline a plan of action, but I trust that you will develop your own version for better or worse as you learn.
The great thing about this book is that it addresses the power and politics of the business world. I have seen quite a few promising but naive managers fail because they were blind-sided by coniving opponents. This book is useful to prepare good people to succeed and thereby make companies successful.
