Book Description
The relationship between a mother and daughter is often fraught-but never so much as during the preparations for a daughter's wedding. Who better to offer a fresh perspective on weddings than the mother of the bride? And who better to describe it -- the agony and the ecstasy -- than Ilene "Gingy" Beckerman, who's married off three daughters and remembers it all very clearly.
--The high cost of wedding cakes: "I could have had a lifetime supply of Entenmann's chocolate doughnuts!"
--Bridesmaid dresses: "What do five girls-one short, one tall, one buxom, one flat, one who gave birth a month ago-have in common? A bridesmaid's dress they hate."
--Mother-of-the-bride dresses: "I tried on green velvet. A Rodney Dangerfield line came to me: 'If that dress had pockets, you'd look like a pool table.' The dress had pockets."
--And, finally, the sight of her daughter walking down the aisle: "My daughter was Cinderella, Snow White, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, and Jacqueline Kennedy. But better."
Gingy looks at the bride-to-be and sees the teenager who wanted Bo Derek braids, the little girl she taught to dance to the tune of "Me and My Shadow," the beautiful baby, the miracle she gave birth to decades earlier. And now, en route to the aisle, their relationship is tested in ways Gingy never imagined.
Beckerman simply and brilliantly describes the highs and lows of life with an adult daughter. What emerges is a poignant and telling story.

humor for mother of the bride.......2007-07-23
I got this book for my mom. The title caught my eye because she had a horrible time finding a dress for my brother's wedding and now she has to look once again for my wedding! She loved it and found it very humorous, basically read it in one night. The only thing I wished is that it would have had a checklist or something like that for the mother of the bride. Overall, great book!
Mother of the Bride: The Dream, the Reality, the Search for a Perfect Dress.......2007-07-05
What a great book to give the 1st time mother of the bride at the bridal shower. It puts things in perspective! I recommend they read it a couple of days before the wedding.
Survival guide for M.O.B!!.......2005-05-20
This book was great. It is written with humor and insight, and I probably would not have appreciated it before this adventure we call "being the M.O.B". It is definately worth every penny.
You'll laugh, you'll cry -- you know the drill =).......2003-06-18
This is basically an autobiographical comic short story, with wacky illustrations to add to the fun. I bought it as a Mother's Day present for my mom right after I got engaged, and we read it aloud together in our favorite spot on the front porch, passing the book when one of us was overcome with laughter -- or tears. Ilene Beckerman can really write, and she does it with devastating humor and tear-jerking poignancy as she explores -- from the front row view of the mother of the bride -- the fun, the fights, the work, the tears, the trials, and often the complete insanity that all contribute to the creation of a beautiful wedding. At the same time, she critically (and beautifully) examines the complex relationship between a mother and her daughter. This short little gem will help you remember the things you appreciate most about your mother, your daughter...or both.
A Great Gift.......2000-10-12
When my daughter became engaged, I got three copies of this book as gifts. I loved it so much that I have given away the two extra copies that I received to friends who will soon be MOBs!
The book is so real, so funny, so poignant. It succinctly summed up the relationship between mothers and daughters as it detailed the intricate and involved planning process for today's weddings. I loved the way Beckerman gave us glimpses of her daughter's growing-up years.
I felt every feeling the author was feeling --- I laughed, I cried, and I called my daughter to read portions to her.
And today....I found the perfect dress!!!

Customer Reviews:
Quite insightful!.......2004-05-14
"How to Buy Your Perfect Wedding Dress" by Ronald Rothstein, et al, basically deals with the the selection of a wedding dress. The authors went into details of what dresses are suitable for what body types and they touched on factors such as the silhouettes, sleeves or no sleeves, trains, the back, necklines and bodies. They also provided information on accessories such as veils, shoes, lingerie, and gloves which are quite helpful to the bride-to-be. In addition, the authors also gave advice on where to get the wedding dresses, and how to take care and preserve the them.
I think this is a useful book to have for those (including me) who have no idea of how to select the right wedding dress. The authors provided basic to very detailed information that I think would be good to have before actually selecting a dress. At the very least, I learn some useful terminologies that will help me when I actually want to talk to the wedding consultant.

Laughter to Die for.......2007-02-17
I have been a faithful FoxTrot reader for years. Roger, Andy and their kids Peter, Paige and Jason are always good for a reality check with a large dose of laughter. I've got two girls and let me tell you, I see a lot of my kids in Paige with, I believe, even a healthy dose of Jason thrown in. And they have Peter's bottomless stomach. Of course, they're faithful FoxTrot readers too. I used to read the strip to them, explain what was going on, but now they get it just fine and we three all laugh together. Then my girls try and explain the strip to their dad, who pretends he doesn't get it.
The FoxTrot folks are a great family, one we sort of got used to checking up on every day, so we took the news that Mr. Amend was going to cease daily distribution of his wonderfully funny people and turn his strip to Sunday only, with a bit of sadness. Still, we have these terrific FoxTrot books to keep us going with our FoxTrot fix. Mr. Amend is to be commended for his great gift to our culture and his great gift to so many lives. I truly believe a laugh a day, helps keep the blues away and the FoxTrot gang are always good for a laugh. Heck there are a lot of laughs in the FoxTrot books. I know, I have them all and I am, along with my girls and my hubby dear, eagerly awaiting the next one.
Oh yes, I forgot to mention, we don't have an iguana, but my girls do have a pet gecko and, you guessed it, his name is Quincy.
Say Hello to Cactus Flats. Foxtrot, All Great!.......2007-01-20
I've been a Foxtrot reader for a long time and personally I think there is something suspiciously wrong with people who don't find Bill Amend's characters funny as all get out. If you want a good laugh, check out Bill in your local newspaper, or better yet, get one of the Foxtrot books. They are all great, really, they are.
Like many of Mr. Amend's fans I'm a bit disappointed he's switching his strip to Sunday-only, but fortunately I can still read him daily in the Foxtrot books. Get them one and all and you can keep right on a laughing.
Excellent as always........2004-07-06
I've been a long-time fan of FoxTrot and this collection is a worthy addition to your library.
FoXtRoT RoCkS!!!!!!!! This is a great comic book series.......2002-10-09
In this foxtrot, Jason's nintendo breaks!... THey go on a trip to cactus flats... Peter tries to join "American Gladiators"... Read the book to find out more. This is a best comic book series. As good as Garfield and Calvin and HObbes (Maybe better) NOT A WASTE OF MONEY
Fox Trot's Sensational!.......2000-03-27
In this hysterical collection of Fox Trot cartoons, the Foxes take a trip to the desert, Mc Donalds, and about everywhere else that could make a good joke! Bill Amend is great!

A book worth reading that will give insight on chicanos........1999-01-06
When i opened up the book I had zero expectations because i had never heard of this author. As I started reading I found myself laughing out loud. I nervously looked around to check if anyone was around. Its that kind of book. As a mexican I found I had alot of things in common with many parts of this book. I feel very strongly that all latinos will be able to relate with some or most of this book's content. I really recommend this book to everyone. If you are not a latino or chicano you will be able to enjoy a slice of my culture as well as the culture of chicanos. I would frequently show tidbits of the book to my friends. This book has the right mixture of humor, inside jokes, facts, and deals with some serious issues. A book to be read more than once.

Book Description
To many this may sound like an exploitative title, a book that caters to prurient tastes and features cheesecake photographs of pseudo-actresses from direct-to-video basement/bedroom productions. Those so-called Scream Queens.
But this is not that type of book!
No, Bitches, Bimbos, and Virgins is the history of women in the horror cinema, profiling their evolution from coffee-maker to scientist, from seductress and victim to kick-ass heroine, and finally detailing their emergence as well-drawn characters who play important roles in horror movie history-past, present, and future.

Brahms: The Four Symphonies
ASIN: 067451176X |
Book Description
Though central to our concert and recording repertory, and crucial to the history of the symphony, the four symphonies of Johannes Brahms have proved surprisingly resistant to critical analysis. In this brief, elegant book, a premier musicologist conducts us through the Second Symphony to show us what is unique and remarkable about this particular work and what it reveals about the composer and his time.
Reinhold Brinkmann guides us through the symphony movement by movement, examining musical ideas in all their compositional facets and placing them in the context of major trends in the intellectual history of late nineteenth-century Europe. He delineates connections between this symphony and the composer's other works and traces its relation to the music of Brahms's predecessors, particularly Beethoven. The product of a long and deep engagement with the music of Brahms, Late Idyll captures the spirit of the composer, probes the impulses behind his revisions of the original manuscript, and explores the meaning of the disparity between the first two movements of the symphony and the last. The result is a penetrating reading of a perplexing and important composition, clearly placed within its biographical, historical, and artistic context. It will engage and enlighten students and concertgoers alike.

Good Enough But You Need To Do Your Own Thinking.......2006-09-11
I find the book generally well conceived and indeed "startling" in some areas. Take the title for what it is; sound, proven lines are seldom "startling" so expect to be taken, at times, rather close to the edge... for this reason I feel criticisms of the book for doing just that (going to the edge) are not fully justified ... do you want to be "startled" or do you want well-trodden pathways?
That said, keep a couple of things in mind. First, being "startling" is not without risk. Do you try it in the first round of an open Swiss when facing an opponent 400 points higher in rating? You would either (a) get instantly demolished, or (b) actually have an interesting game. It all depends. Do you try it against an equally-ranked player? Perhaps, depending on the tournament or match situation. Against a lower-ranked player? Again, perhaps....
This leads to the second point: with all repertoire books, but with this one especially, you MUST do your OWN thinking. The author cannot do that for you. You must go through the book, choosing lines that interest you, and then decide when and if you might try them out. For instance, I found this book's chapters on the Sicilian and the French rather interesting; certainly off the beaten track and worthy of more study. I don't know that I would try the Cochrane against the Petroff, as other reviewiers have also opined.
As to whether the book's analysis is sound and complete, I am not qualified to judge. But I do find it interesting and worthy of selective study. I would actually rate the book 3.5 stars.
Startling Indeed.......2003-12-22
This is not a very good repertoire book. For example, the Cochrane Gambit against the Petroff is a joke. The lines recommended after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.d4 are mostly favorable to Black (the book is a repertoire book for White). The analysis is full of holes. The author could have tested some of his material against computer programs; obviously he did not. The player who tries out some of these dubious lines against strong opposition will be startled at how fast he winds up in hot water.
A Good Repetoire Book for the Agressive Club Player.......2003-02-11
This book has a few weak spots, but is still a fine opening repetoire as white for an attacking player. Mr Baker makes many fine suggestions for generating attacking play and dynamic positions that are in most cases reasonably sound, and that often take your opponent "out of book" and throw them onto their own resources. This is especially helpful when playing a complex opening like the sicilian defense against a "booked up" opponent (someone who has memorized reams of opening theory). The book shows the majority of reasonable responses from your opponent, as well as responses likely to be seen by non masters / grandmasters (that would be the rest of us).
Where the book falls a little short is in it's ability to give a player the "bigger picture". To play an opening well you need to understand the ideas behind it, and not just memorize lines of play. Mr. Baker provides little to none of this, nor does he consistently elaborate on a position once it has been reached. He may say "and white stands better" but it is up to the reader to discern the how and why they stand better... which is necessary to derive an advantage from the position. With this in mind, having a reasonable knowledge of positional play and tactics will allow the reader to get more enjoyment from this book.
As a last thought, while I am not thrilled with every line the author presents, and explanations and ideas could be fleshed out a little more, I still recomend this book as a good read for the 1400-2100 crowd. A book must be judged on it's own terms. Mr. Baker has provided a reasonably complete repetoire for white that often generates attacking chances and gets black out of his prepared opening variations quickly. To have produced this book with all that, along with comprehensive positional analysis of all possible lines, and comprehensive strategic goal analysis of all the various opening systems at black's disposal would create a book that was both unweildy in size and price. There are a ton of books available that read like encyclopedias, or that talk forever about the goals of an opening without actually providing reasonable coverage of potential lines of play. So when all is said and done, even good books rarely have the chance to be all things to all readers. But if you have some positional knowledge, and want to have some fun dynamic chances as white then this is a fine book for your repetoire.
My Best Chess Book.......2002-07-04
I have bought many chess books (about 100) especially on openings, and I have found this book is my best one - well analyzed, easy to understand, concised, etc.
A word of warning..........2001-06-21
I have been worshipping at the Chess altar of Chris Baker for some time (close to six months) and I have to admit that he has written a book designed, indeed, to be startling but here's the kicker: to both you and your opponent! There are many lines given (all supposedly pro-White, by the way, and based on Black's replies to 1.e4) that haven't been analysed in-depth or played much at major tournaments and the reason for this is quite simple, really: these lines are quite horrid in the hands of lower-level players and will quickly get you into trouble if you don't understand what's happening 'behind the barn' as it were.
Baker, an International Master, has made little effort to explain why moves are made or the general trend/idea of the game, leaving things up to the reader to do so. I would not recommend this book to players with USCF ratings of 1500 or below and even then, not without a lot of personal and computer-aided analysis of the lines. However, in the right hands, it's great to trot out these lines as White from time-to-time, if only to get Black thinking for long enough for White to get a cup of coffee!

Good book.......2007-07-27
I picked up some pointers. I'm sure as I continue to go through the book I will learn more about Real Estate Math.
Extremely basic - for the very beginner.......2006-12-25
I have reviewed many real estate books and this is a very very basic book for beginners of residential real estate math. The book starts with adding and subtracting. There is no section on the finance behind income producing properties such as determing cap rates, cash flows, etc. Even for beginners, this book is extremely basic with basic math formulas. You would need a supplemental book with more advanced concepts. If you have no math background, then this is a good book but if you know some math, I would recommend a more advanced book.
the right formula.......2005-07-25
if you are a real estate agent having trouble figuring closing costs, pricing, escrow accounts and other real estate math essentials, this is a good book. there are no "magic" math books. you have to sit down with your paper, pencil, calculator and practice. learn some basic formulas, study the material which is well organized, and you'll have a lot more "math self confidence".

I have Professional Real Estate Problem Solving books written by an attorney-instructor in Michigan, Mr. John a. Tirone. I noticed this book in our office and also one authored in real estate math by a different author, Coleman, I believe. I noticed that Mr. John Tirone was a reviewer of these books, which probably explains in part their accuracy?
I liked the mastering real estate math book, basics for exam preparation and sometimes review. but if you realy want to see something in real estate calculations, the ONLY book you should get is Mr. Tirone's Professional Real Estate Problem Solving Books, at least this is my opinion.
I noticed as well that Tirone was acknowledged in the sound reading real estate Principles textbook put out by Prentice Hall book company and authored originally by a Mr. Harwood.
Mastering Real Estate Math.......2003-11-22
Whether you are entering the real estate market for the first time and are prepping for your exam, or are a seasoned pro, this book is a total Godsend! Ralph Tamper and his associates have amassed an impressive, comprehensive and easily digestible volume on any and everything you need to know about the specifics of real estate math to get started-and thrive-in the business. And, if like me me, it's been a very long time since you've even seen a math book, you, too, will be eternally grateful for this book!
Mastering Real Estate Math walks you step-by-step through every pertinent scenario and provides clear, concise instruction, practice questions, and a challenging test at each chapter's end, so you'll feel confident and ready on exam day...and beyond. The answer key shows the methodology used in problem solving, enhancing the learniong process.
I couldn't have passed my exam without it! This text should absolutely be a requirement in all real estate education curriculums in the USA, not just for exam prep, but for use in everyday practice. Even my mortgage broker in California who has 20 years in the business got it and he loves it!
Big kudos again to Ralph Tamper and Co. for a producing an essential workbook, and thus providing real estdate industry professionals with a tremendous asset. And kudos also to Dearborn Real Estate Education for their fine roster of real estate educational materials.
