Customer Reviews:
Wonderful book.......2001-11-20
This is a beautiful book to keep and to give. The drawings are very interesting and beautiful, some of them are very basic sketches, some are complex artistic works, but all of them have one thing in common: they were drawn with lots of love. And that shows. Thank you for this book Ms Leacock!
A great person and a great book.......2000-12-28
This book is absolutely great. Kids of all ages enjoy looking at the flowers that were drawn by the many famous stars that appear in it. I personally know Victoria and the work that she put into the book. There are stories in it that will make you cry, like the Alison Gertz story. It is very heartwarming. Thirty percent of the profits go to the Aid foundation known as Love heals which is absolutely great.
A beautiful book to keep forever........1999-05-19
A very beautifully well put together book. Not only are the drawings interesting, the text that goes along with them as Ms. Leacock remembers the acquiring of the flowers will make you laugh and cry. The wide range of celebrities drawings of flowers is quite amazing (authors, directors, actors, etc.). That Ms. Leacock would share these very personal rememberances make it quite touching. Makes a wonderful gift for anyone and you will want to display it on your coffee table forever. The fact that a large percentage of the proceeds is going to AIDS charities is even more special.
Check out what Leonardo drew!.......1998-11-17
What a cool book! Who knew all these celebrities could also draw! I bought 2 copies. One for myself and one as a gift for Christmas.

Rebecca returned with this heaping helping fo hardcore sapphic sensuality, all rendered in the artist's slick pencilwork. The "forced milking" scenes are an especially nice touch.
Customer Reviews:
2nd great collection.......2005-04-11
Adult black & white collection of drawings.
This is the second collection of drawings involving housewives. There are roughly 56 well-drawn detailed drawings of women inside the book. The pictures range from the tamer to pictures that are more in the extreme range (involving bondage in one form or another, humiliation, getting caught in action, whipping). The women are mothers and daughters, neighbors, students, teachers, lactating women, pregnant women, neighbors, brides, rival soccer moms, and friends. The men are either shocked at the action or looking for their women.
The action occurs in-doors (like the woman caught having fun on the washing machine), outside (numerous, like the picture of one of the soccer moms of the losing team bound over a grill being whipped), at a doctor's office (like the picture of the aggressive OB GYN), at a hospital, and at school (like the picture of the back to school parents night).
Overall, the collection is interesting, and well-drawn. The collection contains pictures of incest, bondage, whipping, exhibitism (forced), cooking, and humiliation. Note: some of the collections contain a page that collects the title of the pictures, but this one does not.
Nice.......2002-07-19
Enjoyable, cool, laydback, relaxed and hot. A book of drawings. Discoveries of lesbian encounters, by boyfriends, girlfriends or family. The best was the soft and elegant lines. Offensive motives presented in a very non- offensive way.
But why not make a story? I REALLY would enjoy to get a comic book with lesbian sex presented in a way like this. An idea for Rebecca ?
WOW... What Fun!.......2002-03-20
What a wonderful, erotic joy ride! The illustrations are excellent.... the scenerios are creative and fun. What better things are there in life than erotica and humor???...Here you have the best of both. I adored it! Being a part-time housewife myself.. it has given me a few yummy ideas.
Ugh!.......2001-10-11
Stupid me...I thought I was purchasing a book that involved a storyline. WRONG! This "book" is nothing but a bunch of cartoons with NO words in it.
If you're a fan of adult cartoons, then this book is for you. If you're looking for an erotic book with actual words in it, then look elsewhere.
THE KINKS TO REBECCA.......2001-05-11
A Review By M. J. Rennie, author of PERMISSION/THE PERFECT WIFE: Have you ever wondered what those bored, beautiful, lesbian-leaning suburban housewives do to amuse themselves while their husbands work and the kids are at school? Since 1998, erotic artist extraordinaire Rebecca has supplied the answer in two oversexed 64 page collections of caption-free cartoons and a five book comic series entitled HOUSEWIVES AT PLAY. Some of the most incredible X-rated, hard core and kinky adventures imaginable grace these pages, with black and white line drawings executed with superb skill by "Rebecca." The two 64 page collections are noteworthy for their really lovely "moment of discovery" scenes. The characters featured are always very beautiful and chic. The comic books narrate the story of Catherine Mitchell, a shapely fortyish housewife and mother who learns the joys of sexual submission from her friends Patty and Beth. Bent over and forced to spread, sweet Cathy goes from prissy soccer mom to ardent lesbian sex slut in short order. Indeed, unrepentant lesbian lust is the theme of HOUSEWIVES. What sets this series apart though, is the general tone of tongue in butt-cheek humor, along with the really superior skill with which these comics are crafted. Featuring a style that pays homage to 1950s and 1960s romance comic books, the characters engage in oral, anal, erotic toy, bondage and discipline scenes that leave thought criminals of every age and persuasion turned on and laughing. Rebecca's work is part of an ongoing boom in the field of fine erotic comic art. The series HOUSEWIVES AT PLAY mark Rebecca as an exceptionally accomplished artist and a rising first rank comic talent.

The Funniest Book Ever!.......2000-11-01
If They Mated is one of my favorite skits on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, so I just had to buy this book. I am glad I did, it is one of the funniest books I've ever read. Even if you never saw the show before, or this skit, I highly recommend getting this book, I guaranty you'll laugh! I would have rated it a 5 but the pictures in the book are grayscale, color would have been much better, but it is still a great book.
Conan O' Brien-nuff said.......2000-08-15

America's foremost musical-theater composer also proves to be a fascinatingly complex and conflicted human being in this meticulous biography by the always-capable Meryle Secrest (Being Bernard Berenson, etc.). Stephen Sondheim himself was interviewed for the book, as were many of his closest friends, and the author makes perceptive use of this material. Born in 1930, Sondheim was a successful Broadway lyricist (West Side Story and Gypsy) before he was 30. But the scars from a miserable childhood remained: he was inclined to be distant, hypercritical of those less intelligent than he, and terrified of serious emotional commitment. Critics sometimes found those qualities in the series of groundbreaking musicals he created with director Hal Prince--Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, and Sweeney Todd, to name four--but they agreed that he brought new intellectual ambition and artistic adventurousness to the musical theater. Secrest does a fine job of delineating Sondheim's career in terms of what it tells us about the state of American theater, as when he shifted to a partnership with writer-director James Lapine and worked in the nonprofit sector for such musicals as Sunday in the Park with George and Assassins. She also does well in selecting revealing quotes to depict the composer's struggle to accept his homosexuality and a rage at his overbearing mother so deep that he didn't even attend her funeral. Sondheim the man and Sondheim the visionary artist get nearly equal time in an intriguing portrait.
Book Description
In the first full-scale life of the most
important composer-lyricist at work in musical theatre today, Meryle Secrest, the biographer of Frank Lloyd Wright and Leonard Bernstein, draws on her extended conversations with Stephen Sondheim as well as on her interviews with his friends, family, collaborators, and lovers to bring us not only the artist--as a master of
modernist compositional style--but also the private man.
Beginning with his early childhood on New York's prosperous Upper West Side, Secrest describes how Sondheim was taught to play the piano by his father, a successful dress manufacturer and amateur musician. She writes about Sondheim's early ambition to become a concert pianist, about the effect on him of his parents' divorce when he was ten, about his years in military and private schools. She writes about his feelings of loneliness and abandonment, about the refuge he found in the home of Oscar and Dorothy Hammerstein, and his determination to become just like Oscar.
Secrest describes the years when Sondheim was struggling to gain a foothold in the theatre, his attempts at scriptwriting (in his early twenties in Rome on the
set of Beat the Devil with Bogart and Huston, and later in Hollywood as a co-writer with George Oppenheimer for the TV series Topper), living the Hollywood life.
Here is Sondheim's ascent to the peaks of the Broadway musical, from his chance meeting with play-
wright Arthur Laurents, which led to his first success--
as co-lyricist with Leonard Bernstein on West Side Story--to his collaboration with Laurents on Gypsy, to his first full Broadway score, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. And Secrest writes about his first big success as composer, lyricist, writer in the 1960s with Company, an innovative and sophisticated musical that examined marriage à la mode. It was the start of an almost-twenty-year collaboration with producer and director Hal Prince that resulted in such shows as Follies, Pacific Overtures, Sweeney Todd, and
A Little Night Music.
We see Sondheim at work with composers, producers, directors, co-writers, actors, the greats of his time and ours, among them Leonard Bernstein, Ethel Merman, Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein, Jerome Robbins, Zero Mostel, Bernadette Peters, and Lee Remick (with whom it was said he was in love, and she with him), as Secrest vividly re-creates the energy, the passion, the despair, the excitement, the genius, that went into the making of show after Sondheim show.
A biography that is sure to become the standard work on Sondheim's life and art.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
A mess, but for now it's the only mess we have.......2004-01-20
If you want to learn about Sondheim's life in detail, this is the most thorough account. Although there are books that are mostly about his work in which you can also find biographical information, this is the first and (thus far) only biography. That's the only reason why I'm giving three stars to this generally shoddy book.
What's wrong? First, there is an astounding number of factual errors.
In addition to the outright errors, Secrest also makes many misleading, imprecise, or incomplete statements. Loose ends and chronological confusions abound.
Some of the people Secrest quotes also make statements that are factually incorrect, and neither she nor her editors (who must take a good share of the blame) caught these mistakes. All of this suggests that she knows little about musical theatre in general or Sondheim's work in particular. She actually gets major plot details of Sondheim's shows wrong. Unbelievable.
There are also numerous places where she makes statements that contradict what she writes elsewhere.
All these problems seriously call into question how much of the material here that isn't public knowledge can be trusted. You end up wondering how someone who is so clearly unqualified persuaded the people at Knopf to give her this assignment, much less how she got Sondheim to cooperate. She must talk well, but she certainly doesn't write well.
Which brings us to the final problem: She isn't a very good writer.
Still, if you want a Sondheim bio, this is it. Since Secrest had access to Sondheim and to many of his friends and associates, I'm sure that some of what she writes is accurate. But if you read this, you should just realize that a good deal of what is here is unquestionably wrong.
Okay, but the definitive book on SS has yet to be written.......2001-08-28
Secrest has written a book on Sondheim that skims the surface and gives a broad overview. It rarely has insights, however, except a few "anaylses" of the musicals themselves that often border on the ludicrous (such as how many references to S&M there are in his works). There are misspellings of people's names, wrong dates, and some confused plot descriptions as well. But most of all, she seems too polite and distanced from her subject, offering facts but not insight or exploration. I'm not asking for National Enquirer-style dirt, but there is more on the inner-workings and intrigue of such works as "Merrily" in Craig Zadan's "Sondheim & Company," which unfortuantely is out of print, I believe. Furthermore, Secrest is often a confusing writer. She switches pronouns without always making it clear who is now doing the talking, or includes an out-of-context quote without explaining its meaning or context. She also repeats herself in several spots, making me think she revised one segment while forgetting what she had written just a page later or earlier. In short, this book needed an editor, as well as a more probing and insightful author. Most biographies suffer from excessive speculation. This one has just the opposite flaw.
derivative, banal, plodding, unauthoritative.......2001-03-31
The prospective purchaser of "Stephen Sondheim: A Life" is likely to be misled by this remark: "people seem to be missing the point--this isn't a critical biography, but a personal one". In fact, until she undertook to write it, the author of this book had no personal or professional relationship with its subject whatsoever. It is a thing anyone sufficiently motivated could throw together, and I can't in good conscience recommend it. I can and do recommend Craig Zadan's "Sondheim & Company", and for those interested in musical theatre in general, Richard Rodgers's "Musical Stages" and Alan Jay Lerner's "The Street Where I Live".
Stephen Sondheim: A Life.......2000-12-28
Meryle Secrest presents a balanced, authoritative, comprehensive view of Sondheim. Secrest does "get" Sondheim: the man, the composer, the lyricist. She also "gets" his musicals, both as chronicler and as listener. Virtually all Sondheim screenplays, plays, musicals, and individual songs are intelligently discussed. Extensive and intimate interviews with Sondheim provide the basis, but alternative outlooks from his principle collaborators, associates, friends, and enemies also appear. (Insights of his peers are not present since Sondheim has no peers.) The book carries an inside, but not reverent feel. Sondheim's troubled relationship with his mother leading to extensive therapy, his difficulty in coming to grips with his homosexuality, and his periods of self doubt and perceived failure are sensitively covered. Secrest does not hesitate to call attention to perceived shortcomings, but her undisguised love and admiration for her subject continually shine through. The book is geared toward an audience with a serious interest in Broadway musicals with emphasis on beauty and meaning in lyrics. Secrest does footnote her interviews and references meticulously, but I would also have enjoyed a discography and a listing of his songs by musical as elements of an appendix. I especially enjoyed the insight on Leonard Bernstein.
Terrific biography of a supremely gifted artist........2000-07-24
Meryle Secrest's book is one of a kind (so far): a story of Stephen Sondheim, the man, rather than simply Stephen Sondheim, the artist. No other book has attempted to do this, and Secrest does a fine job. This book is an absolute feast for Sondheim fans, because the Great Man himself reveals several illuminating insights into his own life, conflicted personality and peerless work. I read the other reviews here at Amazon, and people seem to be missing the point--this isn't a critical biography, but a personal one. And it is one of the very best books written about this enigmatic, thoroughly fascinating man.

Customer Reviews:
I Now Have A Plan!.......2007-05-12
This is an absolutely essential book for anyone looking to purchase a home. Written with just the right touch of humor, the authors offer practical advice written in a manner that does not talk down to the reader.
The authors discuss the fact that a home needs to be looked at as an investment, how and where to conduct your search for a house (including the Internet!), the difference between single family homes, condominiums, and town houses, and much, much more!
There are imporant Internet resources included in this book, as well as check-list developed by the authors not only for comparing houses, but the life expectency for various parts of the house, as well as comparing loan options.
This is a book to be used, not just read. A definite keeper!
okay if you live in Nebraska and/or don't have access to the internet.......2007-03-19
This book, while thorough in its generalities, is really not helpful to an internet-savvy, mid- to upper-market buyer. Most of the information provided is in the form of anecdotes which are interesting but give little practical advice for someone with more specific questions. All of the advice in the book I had seen online at any number of home-buying sites, so the book was pretty much useless. The other bad thing was the data provided as examples; I think the author kept the data he used from the 1980s edition for home prices! Coming from a larger market (Chicagoland), I found the sales price examples ($150,000 for a four-bedroom?) laughable and the "average" statistics (there's no way the average size of a house in the neighborhoods we're looking at is over 2,000 sq. ft.) really kind of ridiculous. Overall, this may be a good book for someone in a small market who knows little about home buying -- but probably not appropriate for someone who is buying in an area where the "average" home price is over $250K. Try Sid Davis's book, A Survival Guide for Buying a Home.
Excellent read........2005-09-08
This is a must-read for anyone considering home ownership. I was able to learn many important things as well as pull together what I already knew. In fact I nearly read the whole book the night I received it. The book is also well written as the author is able to keep things flowing.
BEST HOME BUYING BOOK .......2005-05-27
Home-buying book receives critical acclaim
By Robert J. Bruss
Inman News Features
Consumer Real Estate News
If you or a friend is thinking about buying a new or resale home, first read "The New Complete Book of Home Buying" by Michael Sumichrast and Ronald G. Shafer with Martin A. Sumichrast. This is, by far, the best "how to buy a home" book of 2004.
The prior edition of this book was published in 1980. Since then, the residential real estate industry has completely changed, mostly for the better.
Purchase Bob Bruss reports online.
Mortgages are now easily available, even for home buyers with bad credit. Zero-cash down-payment mortgages are obtainable by home purchasers with good credit and good income. But the national median home price has tripled since 1980 to almost $200,000.
Co-author Michael Sumichrast was a home builder who later became the chief economist of the National Association of Home Builders. Mike is now retired. His son Martin, who was a schoolboy when the book's prior edition was written, is now a Charlotte, N.C., businessman who added research and a younger approach to the book, especially the chapter on Internet resources. Co-author Ronald G. Shafter was a Wall Street Journal reporter for 38 years who covered housing issues.
Although this was a team effort, this is still mostly Michael Sumichrast's book.
This easy-reading book is filled with practical advice for both first-time and move-up (or move-down) home buyers. Just in case you think buying a house or condo might not be a great investment, take a look at the page 3 chart showing the annual percent price gain for new and resale homes since 1968.
The lowest nationwide annual gain was 2.1 percent in 1982; the highest was 14.4 percent in 1979. For 2004, the author-estimated average gain is 10.9 percent. No wonder investors are fleeing the stock market and investing in first, second and rental homes.
"Today, a record 68 percent of Americans own their own homes, up from 64.1 percent 10 years ago and 42 percent in 1940. More than 80 percent of older Americans own their homes, but the biggest gain in the past decade has been among people under age 25," the authors report.
The special touches that add practicality and realism to each chapter are the "Mike's favorite story about..." features where Sumichrast tells of personal experiences about the topic.
Also especially useful are the many charts and graphs, such as "how much house can you afford?" from Fannie Mae's Web site, which considers family income and mortgage interest rate variables.
Throughout the book, the authors add humor to lighten the sometimes-routine home-buying considerations.
For example, in the condo and townhouse chapter, the authors explain about the rise and rebirth of condos. "The condo concept isn't new. The first written documents for such housing date to before the Roman Empire. Legend has it that even Julius Caesar went out one day and bought a condo unit where, in the sales office, he ran into an old friend who was buying. And Caesar said to him, "Et tu, Brute?"
But my favorite author humor is in the chapter about closing the sale where the authors caution: "Calling on lawyers to simplify a complicated legal transaction is like asking Britney Spears to develop a tasteful dress code."
Men will especially like the book's emphasis on the home construction aspects. The numerous charts list, for example, home components and quality comparison considerations. The many checklists make it easy to compare one home against another by listing the major home purchase features to consider.
Although I thought the chapter on Internet resources for home buyers was superb, when I arrived at the later chapter on home-purchase negotiation strategies, I felt it was equally superior, but in a different way. Don't miss the "bidding strategies" chart, which explains when to use various negotiation methods.
A book reviewer is supposed to find fault with every book. However, this one is a challenge to criticize because it thoroughly explains every important aspect of buying a house or condo.
But the book does have an "eastern bias" because it emphasizes closing settlements where the home buyer and seller meet at an attorney's office to close the sale. Residents of states where banks, escrow and title firms are locations for sale closings will just have to ignore the quaint old eastern customs.
Chapter topics include "Home Sweet Home: Still the Best Investment You Will Ever Make"; "Holy Home Prices, or What Can You Afford?" "Home-Buying Strategies, or 50 Ways to Leave Your Landlord or Your Old House"; "Shopping on the Internet"; "Existing Houses versus New Houses"; "Shopping for a Good Buy: from the Outside"; "Shopping for a Good Buy: the Inside Story"; "Negotiating the Best Deal"; and "How to Mortgage Your Future and Find Happiness."
There are several good home-buying books available. But this is the most up-to-date and best one for savvy home buyers who want to avoid costly mistakes. It's also fun and very profitable reading. On my scale of one to 10, it rates an off-the-chart 12.
