Great gift book.......2007-07-28
This book spurred me on to give more encouragement to my children, friends, husband, etc. Definitely an upbeat little Christian book. Even bought another copy for a friend.
Silver Boxes.......2007-01-13
This is as "must have" book. We have bought several to pass out to friends. (A real gift of encouragement.)
Silver Boxes.......2006-10-26
The book was repetitive and boring. One theme, that could have been stated in a paragraph, was repeated over and over again to create a book. I found it to be primarily about what wonderful things the author has done for people, with letters praising her over and over. Yuk. I read this as a selection for our church's book club, and skimmed the last quarter of it because it simply had nothing to say that it had not been said before. I appreciate the sentiment, just felt that the author spent more time praising herself than anything else.
Powerful message, but book is repetitive and drags on.......2006-06-03
I saw a video and later heard a radio program of Florence Littauer's "Silver Boxes" message. I was deeply touched by her Christian message about the power of encouraging and edifying words. Are you giving out "silver boxes"? Words are so powerful, and can build people up or tear them down. Hurtful words can wound people for life. More people need to hear the "Silver Boxes" message.
So when I came upon the book I decided to read it. The same powerful message is there, but the book seems to "drag on" after the first initial chapters. After the first few chapters, it just seems repetitive...Little stories about people who have been wonderfully changed by encouraging words. Nice little stories, but it just seemed to be the same thing over and over. It seems to me that this book should have been condensed into a much shorter length and published as a booklet.
Instead of the book, I'd recommend listening to or watching one of her "Silver Boxes" messages. You will be deeply touched.
Silver Boxes.......2005-08-21
Silver Boxes is one of those books you find, and wonder why no one else heard of it! It is a litle dated, but because of that it is a great deal. It has a very modern/psychological idea about how language and the choice of words that we use to our loved ones, and others, has a real impact on them. It is based on a bible verse with that messsage.
I highly recommend this book for silver anniversaies, birthdays, and Christmas. Everyone should have a silver box in their home, to remind them of the fragility of the soul and the power of encouraging words.

JUST AWFUL.......2005-02-05
This is defintaly the worst manga i've read. It's just gawd-awful. I barly got through the 1st book cuz it's so, so awful. I dind't bother reading the 2nd book. i dind't care what would happen to the characters. The story is basically some kid wants a girlfriend and a alien appears. wow. *throws the book away*
Good manga if your a fan of the anime!.......2005-01-01
Well I went a bought this mainly because the anime was so great and so is this book. But it is missing a few details. some of the sences from the anime arnt in the book that helped bring the anime up and more dramatic. But it starts off with a few good laughs. And its very dramtic. If you really liked the first one pick up the second one as well the story only gets better from where this one ends. This book is full of shocking twist and turns with lots of romance and comedy. So if you but this it will ot be a waste of money. But beware this book as some adult sence's that should not be viewd by kids under the age of 13.
Good story.......2004-11-02
I read this manga today. At first, I wasn't sure if I would like it because the 'texting' is slightly different than most manga I've read. After reading for a few pages though, I got used to it and by the end of the book, I was eager for more. This is a great romantic story with plenty of comedy that kind of sucks you in. Now I am impatient to get volume 2.
Onegai Teacher and then some..........2004-04-19
I recently became hooked on to the DVD series Onegai Teacher (Please Teacher in the US) that I had to see what else there was. When I came across this book I was skeptical and like another reviewer it was slow to start. Soon after the first chapter the stories and characters took on a new life as Go Zappa explored scenarios that took place between the TV episodes which I found this to be highly amusing and insightful. The stories do tend to take on more mature overtones and then become almost explicit in the final chapter, however this is something I was hoping for in an expansion to the TV series. I would love to see a second or third diary that is as explicit as this one becomes and perhaps develop an "after graduation" story where Kei and Mizuho can and are able to share their secret with friends and be public, this story alone could be several chapters.
Over all I loved the book but I must admit that I am saddened it was as short-lived. I found myself practically glued to the stories and wanting more that 200 pages quickly went by.
Please! [sic] Go Zappa and Yosuke Kuroda, create further readings for us and pursue more animated features along the lines of the first 12 episodes. Episode 13 was great and a comical change from the normal series, but I felt the descent into Manga-like animation was beneath the polish of the first 12 episodes.
The full length novel..........2004-02-24
...starts out kind of slow, with a long, flashback of much of what happened in the early parts of the anime/manga (depending on which one you have). But once beyond the recap we soon get into new territory. The chapters seem to be set between episodes of the anime (or other chapters of the manga) and help fill out the characters of the show, including the secondary ones.
The last few chapters deal with adult material, so I'm not sure that it is fit for even 15 year olds. On the other hand, I knew much of this stuff by the time I was 12.
The only problem I have is the book needed more proofreading. Not that there are spelling or grammar mistakes, as much as sentences in the wrong places and things like 'someo f' instead of 'some of'. A good computer or a couple of beta readers could of caught much of the typos.
But if you already have the fanbook, the anime and the manga, this is a must. For 15 and up.
Book Description
Six feature films, the wildly successful television spin-off Star Trek: The Next Generation, endless reruns, videotapes, conventions, a line of best-selling novels, and William Shatner's New York Times best-seller Star Trek Memories have kept the Star Trek spirit alive and well, even 25 years after its cancellation. Now this must-have book for all Trekkers -- which covers every episode of the original series, the pilot, and all six movies -- reveals all the bloopers, continuity errors, plot oversights, equipment malfunctions, and goof-ups that discerning, die-hard fans love to spot, but may have missed. Written especially for all those who find themselves thinking, "Hey, if the transporter is broken, why don't they just use a shuttlecraft?", this nitpicky volume includes Kirk's toupee watch; an examination of the logic of the miniskirted female crew members; number of times Kirk violated the Prime Detective and lots of trivia questions, fun facts, quizzes, and more. Live long and nitpick.

Classic Trek foul ups and blunders.......2006-12-12
I had a copy of this book when it first came out, but I lost it and thought it was out of print. I was delighted to see it still available and ordered it, especially since I have the TV series and movies on DVD now. I this book, author Phil Farrand goes through each and every episode of the Original series and the six feature films. In each he discusses changed premises, plot oversites, equipment oddies, and props that don't work like they should. Also he points out scenes that were cut when the show was syndicated, and what stills where shown during the end credits. Also Farrand also includes what are called tote boards, that lists things like the number of times Kirk's shirt gets torn, number of people who slap Spock, number of times McCoy pronounces someone dead etc. This book is a must for fans of Classic Star Trek.
PS, in the episode The Savage Curtain, during a fight scene, Kirk is on his back, and he draws up his legs to push away his opponet, his pants cleary split!! I laughed until i almost could'nt breathe.
A lot of nitpicks in this book are invalid.......2004-08-02
For example he picks on one Trek ep for mentioning the Euygenics Wars of the 1990's and the fact that in the real life 1990's the Eugenics wars never took place. Also, he mentions inconsistencies beween the TOS and TNG shows. If these are nitpicks they should be in the TNG nitpickers guide. Also I hate when he talks about how Miri would be a shorter show if they (the landing party) could talk to the ship. Wrong author Phil! It would be a different show if they could talk to the ship.
This Trek Fan Loved It.......2002-01-31
I loved this book. Whenever I'm in need of a laugh I still return to it. Every blooper, every continuity problem and and every single episode is discussed in this very funny guide. The author was obviously a huge fan of Star Trek.
Surprise! A reference book that is actually humorous........2001-05-25
Phil Farrand does a wonderful job here of pointing out things the creators of Trek got wrong (and right!)--small things most of us would never give a second thought to. My favorite glitch:
"Return of the Archons--Just after Festival begins, Kirk & the others scamper for cover. In one shot, a rock about the size of a cantaloupe arches down and whacks a crew member on the top of his head. Surprisingly, the man seems unaffected, and the rock simply bounces off. Now that's the kind of guy you want to take on landing party missions!"
I couldn't stop laughing for about five straight minutes after I read this one. If you like Star Trek, and you like to laugh--get Phil Farrand's Nitpicker's Guides for Trekkers. You will not be disappointed.
CITY ON THE EDGE OE FOREVER.......1998-01-24
Kirk and spock are sweeping the floor when spocks notices a man using small tools, the sceen cuts and shows the man's hand picking a a sharp looking tool, then the sceen changes back to Kirk and Spock some words are passed then sceen shows the man's hand again doing the same motion.

An excellent reference book.......2007-09-30
Barry Norman was the BBC presenter of Film xxxx for many years and I always valued his opinion. This book which came out in the early 90's to coincide with 100 years of Cinema and is well worth getting.
Two pages are devoted to each film and Norman has some interesting things to say about all of them. The range of films is extremly diverse from "The Adventures of Robin Hood" (1938) to "Chinatown" (1974) and all sorts in between. He purposely did not include any films made within 5 or 10 years of the publication of the book, as he believed that good films must have legs. I.e. they must stand the test of time. With the passing of another 15 years since its original publication this means that you will probably need to be over 30, or a film buff to read about what is now a list of 100 films that are all over 20 years old.
The first 60 pages of the book are devoted to 3 or 4 essays about the history of cinema. These make fascinating reading and you have to bare in mind that he was writing beofre DVD and downloads existed.
All film buffs will enjoy this book, if you can still get hold of a copy.

Book Description
Barry Norman is Britain's best known film critic. This is his personal choice of the ' best ever' films. This is a new revised edition Barry Norman's personal selection of his best 100 films of the century. As he says in his intro ' There is 1 thing of which I am quite sure: you will not agree with all o it. You will agree with some of it; there are films included which would undoubtedly be on everybody's list but equally there are several, maybe many, which would appeae on any but mine...' Each of his hundred films are reviewed in his inimitable style: Witty, incisive, controversial. Accompanying the reviews are the main film credits, running times, Oscar nominations and awards, and video availability. In addition to his selection, Barry Norman has written a perceptive brief history of the cinema: My purpose being to pick out the most sinificant developments and thereby give some kind of context to my choice of the best 100 films of this century. This new hardback edition has been completely updated and revised with colour photographs, where appropriate , throughout.

The Book That Got Me To Love Film.......2003-10-25
For those who want to learn more about the art of film, Barry Norman's list of the 100 greatest films is the place to start. Unlike the lists from AFI and Roger Ebert, I found that I thoroughly enjoyed every film on Mr. Norman's list. There are certainly some I would like to see on there ("Vertigo," "The Philadelphia Story," the list could go on) but there aren't any on the list that I'd really like to take off.
All the classics are included--"Citizen Kane," "Casablanca," "The Godfather," "Singin' in the Rain"--as indeed they should be. But there are also all sorts of hidden gems (and unlike AFI, Mr. Norman had the sense to include foreign films). Some of the many wonderful films I discovered through the book that I might not have otherwise are "Pygmalion," "The Lady Vanishes," "The Thief of Bagdad" (1940) the Ealing comedies, "Z," and "My Darling Clementine," all of which are among my favorites.
I recommend this book to all who want a basic knowledge of the fundamentals of filmmaking, and to all lovers of film who want to discover some great movies. Highly recommended.
Barry Norman's List is Simply the Best!.......2002-09-30
If you want to see some great movies but don't know where to start, Barry Norman's list is good!
Barry Norman is GRAND!.......2002-01-29
Barry Norman is way rockin', dude! Find him in your stockin'! I LOVE this great gift, he is the best homee I ever done met!
Great resource.......2000-11-29
I think this book is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to expand their cinematic knowledge. Norman carefully picks gems from several different genres and time periods giving the reader a good cross section of films to view. I discovered many great films that I would not have seen otherwise, i.e. Gregory's Girl.
Impersonal and unsurprising.......2000-01-27
I am not a big Barry Norman fan. Not by a long shot and I'm glad he was sacked by the BBC. This book is just Norman all the way through: cold, objective and clearly someone who doesn't particularly like films very much. With the exception of Gregory's and perhaps Sleeper, all of them are the kind of films that critics love and appear on every critic's top 100 list: Citizen Kane, Casablanca, Some Like It Hot, Unforgiven... They're all in there. What's more, Norman barely tells us why the are actually on his list and the entries themselves not insightful at all and just plain dull. Sure, he says ground breaking techniques, superb acting top notch script and genius directors, a film that others have copied since its release, but rarely says anything about their entertainment value or why he personally loves them so much. Worth a glance to big fans fans of cinema and Barry Norman fans (if such things exist), but little else.

Colorful Visual Reference.......2007-08-23
I purchased several of Tom Tierney's historical paper doll sets to augment my family history projects. I have 150 years of family photos which are mostly in black and white, of course, so it's great to see the period clothing in detail and in color. The paper dolls will add so much to my research and my family's appreciation of the historical times and stories. Although I intend to keep the paper dolls uncut, they are printed on card stock which would be easy to cut and not tear apart if well-cared for.
Excellent Tierney Book!.......2000-09-23
Beautiful plates from around World War I. Three generations...grandparents Lynn and Lily; parents Raymond and Margery; Nancy, their oldest daughter; Janet, two years younger than Nancy; Ray Jr., Holly, and Gretchen are all attached as one doll, the youngest of the family. Each member of the family has everyday clothes, coats, clothes for outdoors (so Lynn can go golfing, Raymond and Margery can play croquet, and Nancy and Janet can play tennis;)), and their very best for Nancy's wedding. A happy ending: "radiant bride" Nancy and her new husband Charles. Very nice book, but not my favorite of Tom Tierney's. The three children and their toys make it more pleasurable for kids. I say it's definitely worth it! Great buy!
Book Description
Destined to become a market classic, Dynamic Hedging is the only practical reference in exotic options hedging and arbitrage for professional traders and money managers
Watch the professionals. From central banks to brokerages to multinationals, institutional investors are flocking to a new generation of exotic and complex options contracts and derivatives. But the promise of ever larger profits also creates the potential for catastrophic trading losses. Now more than ever, the key to trading derivatives lies in implementing preventive risk management techniques that plan for and avoid these appalling downturns. Unlike other books that offer risk management for corporate treasurers, Dynamic Hedging targets the real-world needs of professional traders and money managers. Written by a leading options trader and derivatives risk advisor to global banks and exchanges, this book provides a practical, real-world methodology for monitoring and managing all the risks associated with portfolio management.
Nassim Nicholas Taleb is the founder of Empirica Capital LLC, a hedge fund operator, and a fellow at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University. He has held a variety of senior derivative trading positions in New York and London and worked as an independent floor trader in Chicago. Dr. Taleb was inducted in February 2001 in the Derivatives Strategy Hall of Fame. He received an MBA from the Wharton School and a Ph.D. from University Paris-Dauphine.
Customer Reviews:
Dynamic Hedging...goo stuff.......2007-06-13
Great book, very easy read as it is written in a conversational tone. Covers all the issues associated with derivative trading in an intuitive manner.
Good Work.......2006-10-24
Definitely for pros. This book is one of the fewest which is concentrated on the hedging compared to the tons which explain pricing. The other pro of the book is you don't need to be a quant or a PhD guy to understand the book. If this seems what you are looking for, i recommend you get it.
the best book in options.......2006-03-24
This book is a really useful and practical introduction in derivatives from a guy who knows what he is talking about.
Plenty of illustrations and stories from real life. Mathematics is quite informal, and hence the book may not be used for PhD programs - it's a good master's level... good for a guy who wants to start trading options.
FOR EXPERIENCED TRADERS.......2006-02-27
VERY INFORMATIVE, WRITTEN BY AN ACTIVE TRADER, MANY USEFUL TIPS TO BE APPLIED ON THE JOB. ALL IN ALL AN EXCELLENT BOOK. PROVIDES REAL HELP AND KNOWLEDGE, MUST BE READ BY ACTIVE TRADERS.
Real book for traders.......2004-06-27
really great to figure out the intricacies of options. if you need something more conventional just get hull; this book is by someone who does it for a living and has different intuitions than what you get in the ivory tower.
some of the points are great but may need more updating
