Color illustrations would bee an improvement.......2002-02-05
This is costume history on the broad line, as the title says. It gives a good overwiev and as a work of reference, not a specialised deepstudy in a short period or a single item, it is a satisfaying book. An improvement could however bee made in the illustrations, I do appreciate the correctness of stating that some pictures are "reedrawn from ..." I have seen other books were it was not stated although I knew it must have been done, but I would have prefered reproductions of the original pictures, and at least some of the illustrations to bee in color. I presume it was a matter of cost. But the book is not inexpensive as it is and there might bee others besides me who would seriuosly consider paying more if the illustrations were informative as to the colors as well. I have had the possibility to see the earlier edition (1960-thies) as well and compare them a bit and even if I can understand the wish to bee serious. There are a few alterations I wish they had not made.Had it for instance been such a problem to keep a photograp of an reconstruction of an ancient egyptian dress when it was so clearly stated that it was a reconstruction? And why on earth eliminate almost everyone of the of the patterns taken from existing pieces of costume. Yeas some of them have been mesured and published in other books as stated in the introduction, but what would have been wrong with the possibility to compare unless there were serious errors in their making? I could not spot any.
Best Resource for Actors and Costumers.......2000-05-21
This new edition of one of the best costume history books I've ever seen is very welcome. This edition has all of the power of the original with an added preface and a further, more detailed chapter on 20th Century dress. I have learned more about period details which have helped me as an actor from this book than from many classes. A necessary and pleasurable resource for the actor, costumer, designer and history buff. Worth the money!

End times: the competition.......2007-06-22
Every nutjob cult out there has decided that the end is near. They all disagree on how near, though, so they set out to make sure their end date is THE end date. Then, Our Girl discovers that she's inhabited by a little being - one who looks forward to calling her 'Mama'. Tank Girl, Mama. Say it a few times. Just doesn't work, does it? Sorry, her uterus says that's the way it is. Never argue with a uterus. (For one thing, they never listen.)
It seems like the end of the world for her. Oddly enough, all those other end-of-the-worlders seem to agree. Her little bouncing whatever is (as they say) The Sign, great sacrifice material, and the chase is on.
So, with bad attitude, bulging belly, and big battlegear, she's off. Booga, her mutant `roo bedmate can't wait to be a daddy (you want it so much? do it yourself). But, with Tank Girl, there's always one more surprise.

Watch Out Evil Doers........2001-08-04
If you think you are being singled out by many of the people around you - try and remember what you might have done to them. Someone may out to make you pay for their discomfort. Well, if they have read one of Hayduke's books - you are in big trouble.
My copy of this book has many of the pages dog-eared, for quick re-reads. Only for entertanment purposes only. (But I am ready to act if I have to.)

Book Description
In the world of Western films, Randolph Scott, Joel McCrea, and Audie Murphy have frequently been overlooked in favor of names like Roy Rogers and John Wayne. Yet these three actors played a crucial role in the changing environment of the post-World War II Western, and, in the process, made many excellent middle-budget films that are still a pleasure to watch.
This account of these three Western stars careers begins in 1946, when Scott and McCrea committed themselves to the Western roles they would play for nearly twenty years. Murphy, who also joined them in 1946, would continue his Western career for a few years after his cohorts rode into the film sunset. Arranged chronologically, and balanced among the three actors, the text concludes with Audie Murphy's last Western in 1967. Covering both the personal and professional lives of these three Hollywood cowboys, the book provides both their stories and the story of a Hollywood whose attitude toward the Western was in a time of transition and transformation. The text is complemented by 60 photographs and a filmography for each of the three.

Good Book but Facts Could Be Reviewed.......2002-09-27
This book reviews the lives of three long-neglected cowboy stars - Randolph Scott, Joel McCrea, and Audie Murphy. Specifically, it follows the western films of these three actors. The book presented a good deal of information on the films and it is too bad most don't seem to be available on dvd as I would like to see the films that I have not seen. There were great descriptions of the plot and making of the films which was well done because it was evident that the author had viewed most of the available films. However, what bothered me was the inaccuracy of the very first line of the book that indicated Scott was born in Orange, North Carolina when all references I have seen indicate it was Orange County, Virginia. When I see something I know to be inconsistent with many other sources, I begin to wonder if anything in the book is accurate as to the biographical data on the stars. However, I would still recommend this book to anyone interested in these films or the stars.
Riding high!.......2001-07-30
Entertaining and well-written book about the 3 movie-cowboys: Randolph Scott, Joel McCrea and Audie Murphy. Book tells not so much about their private lives and relations - but focuses on all the westerns they made since 1946. The writer tells detailed about each film and gives his personal opinion. Don't think that he considers all of them to be masterpieces - far from that! So, if these actors were some of your movie heroes from the 50's and 60's, the book is recommendable and easy read (even for a foreigner).
Last out of the old corral..........2000-08-14
Apart from John Wayne, there were only three cowboy stars who hung on in the late 50s and early 60s, before spaghetti westerns briefly revived the genre, and created a new cowboy hero, Clint Eastwood. These were Randolph Scott, Joel McCrea and Audie Murphy. The films made by Scott between 1956 and 1960, directed by Budd Boetticher and written by Burt Kennedy, are among the best westerns ever put to film. What Nott has done here is to briefly survey the careers of all three performers before the late 50s, then give a detailed look at their final films. His research is excellent (I only found one error, the often repeated nonsense that Billy the Kid was born in New York City or Brooklyn) and his writing style is coherent and clear. Although Nott clearly loves these performers and these films, this is not a gushing fan publication... a comment that cannot be made for much of the output of this particular publisher. Recommended.
Shooting Stars - Golden Age of The Western Film.......2000-06-25
With "LAST OF THE COWBOY HEROES" Robert Nott pays a long overdue tribute to three of the most enduring stars of the Western film genre. Each of the three stars has his career in the westerns covered in the period 1946-67 fully detailed, with a brief plot synopsis of each film and its making. Additional anecdotal material by colleagues and supporting actors in the trio's films provides a fascinating insight into their personalities. The book is written by Mr.Nott in a thoroughly readable style and in chronological order, like many of his readers he obviously has fond memories of the three stars and their films. The book is a must for anyone who enjoys western films and even more so for those of us who can remember seeing these movies back in the Golden years of the Western Movie. Excellently illustrated with movie stills and off screen shots this book sets a standard for others to follow.
Circle the Wagons Around This One!.......2000-05-22
A must for any fans of this nearly lost genre of the cinema. Scott, McCrea and Murphy were the REAL cowboys, not the Hollywood version of cowboys, and this book adds to the enjoyment of their films for western fans and cineastes of every stripe. Well researched and entertainingly written!

Great things often come in small packages.......2007-07-12
Sure, this book isn't a thick, hard-back tome complete with leather binding, but it packs some pretty amazing effects into its pages. Though some of the tricks might sound pretty simple, the effects can be quite astonishing, especially if you work up a good patter (comical or spooky). One thing I find very helpful about this book is that Robert includes his estimated level of presentation difficulty along with its overall impact for each demonstration. Plus, he mentions right off if a partner or any level of set-up is required. Buy this book and get your nose into it. It's a whimsical, easy read with some real gems to add to your repertoire.
A Reader.......2005-10-11
This book is extremely elementary. Nothing you can't figure out without a little thought. I've got to think the other reviewers are friends of the author, because I can't see how they can possibly think this book is that great.
Truly an excellent book.......2004-10-09
I have read through the many pages of countless magic books only to find myself frustrated with the lack of high impact, hard-to-figure-out tricks. This book, however, was different. A few minutes after reading the first couple of pages I decided to try what I just learned of some of my friends. I blew them away, and they told me I should quit my job and start performing in Las Vegas. If you were to buy this quality of material in a magic store, it would cost around $50. This is a 'must have' for anyone interested in astounding their friends or family.

A proven tool for sharpening one's competitive edge
Today's leading organizations have seized on the concept of transparency as the key to gaining the confidence of investors, employees, and customers--and gaining profits. In The Transparency Edge, leadership expert Barbara Pagano demonstrates that transparency is more than an excellent policy--it is a powerful management skill that managers can learn and use to make themselves and their organizations more competitive.
Presenting the nine behaviors that every successful leader uses to gain a transparency edge, Pagano shows readers how to use these techniques to build loyalty, gain trust, and establish an impeccable reputation for integrity. She also shows how this nothingto- hide approach enables organizations and their leaders to:
- Make decisions more efficiently and execute them more effectively
- Speed up operations
- Identify problems sooner and solve them faster
- Build trust and collaboration within the organization
- Establish a higher level of credibility

Teaches well how to think about credibility and improve.......2005-03-13
This book does a great job of breaking up credibility into a few tangible categories and listing specific examples of how to apply the right touch to each of them -- being open without overdoing it, offering praise without coming across as insincere, etc. I was impressed front to back on the way that the authors dissected each dimension, provided insightful anecdotes, and supported them with metrics.
The biggest thing I didn't like is that it uses the "motherhood and apple pie" approach to convincing you of the value of most dimensions. There's sort of an implicit assumption that everything the book says sounds good, and therefore you must do it, resulting in... profit? If they'd not only pointed out studies that showed how many people were bad at certain things but were also more consistent in showing how each of their dimensions contribute to productivity of staff, profitability of the company, or some other company-specific metric, it would've been nice. I'm not saying that I necessarily disagree with them; rather that I don't like seeing people espouse behavior changes just because they "feel right."
Additionally, it's pretty clear they run a high-level executive consulting business. At times, it seemed too CEO / senior-VP focused, with the assumption that not only do you have reports, but that your reports have tiers of reports. Finally, the number of times that they mention the specific services they provided and specific role they played made it feel less like a self-help book and more like an advertisement for them.
Still, a good book and to be recommended, but I'd take it with a grain of salt at times. It triggered a little bit of cynicism more than once, though I'm sure that they'd be willing to work with me on that :-)
Insightful!.......2004-12-22
It's good to hear that employing a clear, open business policy can boost the bottom line and upgrade management. With all the recent corporate scandals, a management approach based on "what you see is what you get" is refreshing - and it works. Transparent management can increase employee morale, retention and productivity. Transparent leaders are better at their jobs and make a difference in people's lives. Using case studies and self-assessment surveys, authors Barbara and Elizabeth Pagano help potential leaders evaluate and hone their honesty and their leadership styles. The case studies in this easy to read, if slightly repetitive, volume help convey the authors' key points, which center on honesty, awareness and open communications. We recommend this value-enriched book to aspiring leaders, managers and executives who may be surprised to learn that transparent leadership is one of those intangibles that can produce concrete results.
Finally - Permission to be lead from the heart!.......2004-01-09
As someone who has inhabited a pretty competitive corner of corporate America for over 20 years, I can honestly say this book was like a lifeline.
With the huge generation of baby boomers all entering the business scene at the same time, I think a lot of us have felt tremendous pressure to conform to what seemed some pretty harsh norms. Being professional and getting ahead was all about being efficient - not taking the time to explain what was going on; being strong, which means never appearing vulnerable; being tough - which means focusing solely on the more easily quantified sales and profit implications of a decision, and shutting out the human factors.
I work in the communications/consulting business and, at every company I've worked for, senior management would get up every year at the annual meeting and say something like - "What sets us apart and gives us our competitive advantage is how we care about our people," and "The most valuable asset in this company goes home every evening." And everyone would just look at each other and roll their eyes, because nobody believed them!
If they cared so much, why didn't they tell us candidly the reasons behind some of their apparently uninformed and careless decisions? Even bad news would be better than all the confusion and speculation in the ranks when no-one knew what was going on. Why did they do all this management training, yet still knowingly tolerate bosses who brutalized their subordinates? Why did they ask for our suggestions - and even ask us to put extra time in volunteering for various corporate task forces - only to break their implied promise of change by ignoring everything we came up, and proceeding with business as usual?
As I moved up into management myself, I understood better what some of the pressures are that push the people in charge into some of these behaviors, and there were times when I found it hard to reconcile my own choices. I saw it as having to make a trade-off between what I thought was the right thing to do (i.e., my responsibility to my personal values), and doing the right thing for the company (i.e, my responsibility as a professional).
What The Transparency Edge does is show beyond a doubt that standing true to your values makes good business sense. Yes, it's harder to do sometimes, and yes, sometimes the benefits are long-term rather than immediate. But leaders have a responsibility to the long-term welfare of the company, which includes maintaining their own and their company's reputation, as well as creating the motivation for people to follow their leadership. Both of those goals are impossible to achieve without personal credibility. And personal credibility is built through conscientiously respecting the nine principles in this book.
Pagano demonstrates that, without question, the reason to behave transparently is not only because it's right, but because it's smart. What a breath of fresh air - it's about time!
Everyday Leadership for Managers.......2004-01-01
I really enjoy the stories in The Transparency Edge. It is a great reminder that we can choose to be better leaders in everything we do, everyday. Leadership concepts are hard to grasp generally. And illustrating these with personal experiences make these issues come alive for readers. The Paganos' conversational style also makes reading easy. I recommend this to those who are starting/doing 360 feedback. Such a feedback process can be rather disconcerting, as my first-time coachees have confirmed, and it is helpful to have a resource like Transparency Edge to act as a guide for reflection and new actions.
Hats off to these authors.......2003-12-18
This book has a magical combination of real life stories interwoven with principles and facts based on research. Not an easy mix to achieve. Hats off to these authors!
