Art Guys
ASIN: 0810941988 |
Book Description
"[The] impudent Pimpernels of post-conceptual performance art." -Dave Hickey The Art Guys have done it again! In a project exploring the connection between fashion, art, and commerce that only these irrepressible mavericks could have conceived, the two Houston-based artists spent a year crisscrossing the country wearing suits by designer Todd Oldham on which they had sold advertising space to 56 American companies. Suits captures-through photographs, essays, and an interview with The Art Guys-the story of their often hilarious experiences in their guise as human billboards.
As readers discovered in The Art Guys' first Abrams book, Think Twice-the catalogue of their 1995 exhibition at the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston-their unique brand of subversive humor is a springboard for insightful observations about society and behavior. In Suits, the duo have found a fresh, fun, outlandish way to make us think about our material culture as we never have before.
The ART GUYS are JACK MASSING and MICHAEL GALBRETH, artists who teamed up while students at the University of Houston in 1983. Their work has been shown all over the country in museums, galleries, and other spaces. The Art Guys live and work in Houston.
TODD OLDHAM is a well-known contemporary fashion designer.
DAVE HICKEY is associate professor of art criticism and theory at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
SHAILA DEWAN is a former art critic for the Houston Press. She has recently joined the staff of The New York Times.

Excellent insights into Japanese culture........2000-11-02
Often books about Japanese culture speak as much about the cultural biases and beliefs out of which they were written than about the Japanese themselves. There aren't many I'd recommend - Ruth Benedict is still useful, as is Suzuki and Oiwa's THE JAPAN WE NEVER KNEW. Few of the books dealing with cultural difference that I looked at prior to coming to live in Japan were as well-written as this one, however -- JAPAN: A VIEW FROM THE BATH --and few chose as interesting a perspective from which to view Japanese culture and customs -- by focussing on bathing in history and in present times. Customs surrounding bathing here are very different from those in the west; public bathing is still popular, and families will often share water within a single household -- sequentially bathing in the same tub, with the senior members going first. It is considered proper even when bathing alone, however, to wash oneself BEFORE getting into the tub, so that one doesn't end up soaking in dirty water; to serve this end, there is a grate in the floor of every bathroom in Japan, so that one can simply stand outside the tub and splash oneself. Most houses also separate the "bathroom" from the "toilet" and Japanese find it strange and not particularly appealing when they discover that toilets and tubs are usually in the same room in the west (at the very least, they find this inconvienient; what if someone has to use the toilet while another person is bathing? -- a problem that seldom comes up here, though smaller, western-style apartments often now have western bathrooms, too -- though they still have the floor-grate). The points of difference between east and west are sufficient and significant enough that the choice of focus makes perfect sense. Clark writes clearly and intelligently and has done his homework. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in Japan, and certainly for anyone coming to live here (where you will no doubt be eventually asked either to bathe communally or share water, if you stick around long enough).

Not your average friendly forrest creatures.......2006-07-20
They're quick-witted, irrepressible, and alarmingly insightful when it comes to pointing out the foibles of their pink primate neighbours. This is without a doubt one of THE best written and illustrated comics out there today.
Hedge-a-Riffic!.......1997-11-17
There's very little you can say that is worthy of the comic strip and this wonderful collection. With topics as varied as the internet and lawn decorations, RJ and Verne never lose their unique perspective on life in the suburbs and beyond. This will be my holiday gift to all my best friends.

The Jolly Postman
ASIN: 0977259013 |
Book Description
This wickedly delightful parody of a children's book cleverly lampoons President Bush, who seems to go happily about the White House with no apparent interest in current events or pressing issues of national security. Inside each pocket page is a fictional piece of mail addressed to the commander-in-chief. The letters, postcards, and greeting cards tucked into the book deliver delicious laughs for the reader. What could be in the letter from Saddam Hussein? What exactly does Osama bin Laden want? What's the good word from Dick Cheney? And why hasn't the president read any of these important messages?

Putting THE JOLLY POSTMAN to work.......2006-09-24
This terrific book (great to take to Republican Women's Lunches) takes its form and tone from The Ahlberg's cute little THE JOLLY POSTMAN which has letters from and to Three Bears, Red Riding Hood, etc. etc. in little envelopes inside the book. Great idea, Joey!
Innocent fun in a guilty time.......2006-06-25
This little book pokes fun at an administration that takes itself a little too seriously. I brought this book to our town's blood drive to get a laugh from the volunteers, and they loved it so much they wouldn't return it! One bibliophile bought 8 copies to give to her friends.
Will you enjoy this? Can you make fun of yourself? Can you see the humor in a vice president who shoots lawyers? Then you will find this book as engrossing as George W. found "My Pet Goat" on 9/11/01.
A cra-azy book by a cra-azy guy!.......2006-06-23
This little book (drawings and text) might well appeal even to someone who is not as angry and frustrated with W as I am. But for me, an old and old-line Democrat, it's a delight. It may be small but it's loaded with clever and recognizable caricatures. Don't miss the stamps which accompany the letters.
And my title shows I put Green almost in Steve Williams' class as a comic.
A Children's Book For Adults!.......2006-06-22
I first bought "The Jolly Postman" for my grandkids and it was such a gift for me to see their faces light up as they turned each page to see which fairy tale character came next in each of the letters. Joey Green's clever take on the book, which instead mocks our "one-of-a-kind" president, has finally allowed me to experience my own sense of indulgence. Like a kid, I too found myself turning each page, taking out the letters, gleefully reading the contents.
Joey Green's sharp wit is evident throughout the book and I found myself laughing out loud quite a few times. Although it may seem strongly political and opinionated, the book reads like a children's book and can appeal to anyone of any age or standpoint, as long as they know a waste of paper when they see one. This book is anything but. I've already bought copies for my children.
Waste of Paper.......2006-06-17
Perhaps Joey Green needs to grow up? If you like to think you're really funny and smarter than everyone else in the universe, then you'll love this book. It is, unfortunately, not worthy of the paper used to print it. Perhaps that is why the author was "unable" to find a publisher willing to print it?

Book Description
Below the level of the musical note lies the realm of microsound, of sound particles lasting less than one-tenth of a second. Recent technological advances allow us to probe and manipulate these pinpoints of sound, dissolving the traditional building blocks of music -- notes and their intervals -- into a more fluid and supple medium. The sensations of point, pulse (series of points), line (tone), and surface (texture) emerge as particle density increases. Sounds coalesce, evaporate, and mutate into other sounds.
Composers have used theories of microsound in computer music since the 1950s. Distinguished practitioners include Karlheinz Stockhausen and Iannis Xenakis. Today, with the increased interest in computer and electronic music, many young composers and software synthesis developers are exploring its advantages. Covering all aspects of composition with sound particles, Microsound offers composition theory, historical accounts, technical overviews, acoustical experiments, descriptions of musical works, and aesthetic reflections. The book is accompanied by an audio CD of examples.

Definitive guide to granular synthesis.......2006-03-24
Many people today seem to be obsessed with recreating 'classic' sounds, whether it's Minimoogs, TB303s or even traditional orchestral instruments. So it's refreshing to find that there are still people out there intent on pushing the boundaries of synthesis further and creating new sounds. Curtis Roads has done more than most in this field, and this book on granular synthesis that he has authored is a fairly comprehensive guide to the subject.
Roads' involvement with granular synthesis began in 1972, and his research in the field has resulted in him eventually developing his own software. Granular synthesis deals with sound at a 'quantum' level: the sonic atom being the individual sample (any one of the 44100 taken in a second at the standard sampling rate). To be audible as anything other than a click, samples need to be grouped together to form grains of sound. These grains are typically anywhere between three and one hundred milliseconds in length. Granular synthesis is concerned with the organization and processing of both samples and grains to create sounds that are often far beyond the range of more traditional methods of synthesis.
The technology and software required to manipulate sound at this level is now commonly available. Popular programs like Chaosynth and Max/MSP offer in-depth granular facilities, and Roads' own programs, Pulsar Generator and Cloud Generator, are, as you might expect, specifically designed for this sort of application. Although this technology has made it possible, granular synthesis remains a complex process. Microsound is perhaps the best theoretical and practical guide to date, its 409 pages concisely and fluently written throughout. The first chapters outline basic time scales in musical structure and the history and theory of microsound. Chapters three to six deal with the theory and practice of granular synthesis, examining everything from the organisation and processing of grains to the implementation of micro-scale transformations. The later chapters explore the implications and aesthetics of composing with microsound. The book concludes with a brief chapter about the future of granular synthesis. If there is any fault with this book, it is that it may be rather academic in tone for some readers - it is not a 'how to' book. However, if you are seriously interested in exploring granular synthesis, and understanding the principles behind it, then this book is ideal.
For those readers who would like to get their hands dirty themselves and try programming granular synthesis compositions, you might want to look up Jass and jMusic on the web. Jass is a unit generator based audio synthesis programming environment written in pure Java. Jass requires Java 1.5. jMusic is a freeware API that supports both real-time and non-real-time granular synthesis. jMusic has extensive tutorials and example programs available online.

This book will change how you make music and listen to music. There is no turning back.
Microsound.......2005-09-09
A really excellent book. It is highly scholarly, yet easy to understand. He articulates concepts I have thought about for years, but was never able to express adequately. Roads has a talent for organizing very complex material within a perspective-oriented framework making the macro concept very easy to grasp.
It would be extremely helpful to all serious composers of electronic/computer music.
Not as good as Computer Music Tutorial.......2005-02-25
Firstly I would like to disagree with the reviewer who said granular synthesis was not musical. I use it a musical way quite often. It can make very interesting sounds if you give it a go. I was hoping for a guide to granular syntheis, its implementation in some kind of program like Max or SynthEdit or Reaktor but this is not the book for that. Basically it covers a wide range of slightly different types of Granular Synthesis. Approx 2-5 pages are spent on each type. But as the tpyes are so similar bar the size of the windows or perhaps how the windows are selected it makes the book feel very same throughout. The intro chapter covers the history which is informative and interesting. Although the book covers a lot of ground nothing is covered in terms of practical application. No real reference to use is covered, no real description of how to create granular synth modules and no real description of musically useful approaches. He does let you hear some of his composition that he used for public performances but he doesn't really explain why he thought that particular type f synthesis worked well for that performance. I learned a little more about GS from Microsound but to be honest his Computer Music Tutorial is much better and the description of GS in the CMT is almost a good. Save your sheckles and buy the big brother Computer Music Tutorial.

Get a Clue, Sam.......2006-01-29
The fact that the cover of this book has a chessboard on it shows that the author clearly has no understanding of either game. If you think I'm joking then just look--the pieces are in an illegal (and ridiculous) position! And wouldn't we all be big winners if royal flushes came as often as he'd have you believe.
Mr. Braids may have a PHD... well I think we all know what that stands for.
Not Really Even a good Beginner's Book.......2005-05-04
I picked this book up and leafed through quickly. I should have taken more time. I have about 6 or 7 poker books so I think I have a pretty good perspective on what is helpful and what looks like somebody trying to turn a quick buck.
Where do I begin. In a nutshell the author touches on most of the basics; pot odds, probabilities, starting hands and some strategies for turn and river play. But it's all cursory and even if you're a beginner and you should really be learning the basics of learning the difference between good starting hands and trash. Whereas every decent poker book will discuss at length which combination of starting hands should be played and which should not (as well as when) the author spends about 2 pages discussing maybe one of the most important considerations for a beginner.
The cover says "includes detailed instructions for Online Poker". Listen to me, you will not learn enough from this book to be successful at online poker. The online poker section is a bit of a joke really.
About 60 pages of this 175 page book are devoted to a glossary and a list of internet poker sites as well brick and mortar poker rooms.
If you already know the basics I would recommend any books by Sklansky, Malmuth or Kreiger. I especially like "Small Stakes Hold 'em" by Sklansky and Malmuth. I also liked Lou Krieger's "Hold 'Em Excellence"
Pass this one up. There are just too many good books out there than to waste your time with this.
Very Enjoyable Book? Now Get To Playin!!!.......2004-07-08
This was a very Enjoyable Book. It provided important and useful concepts about the game of Poker. I learned new concepts, which identified some leaks in my game. Leaks in your game can come from anywhere!!! Leaks can originate from lack of aggression, overcalling raises, misreading opponents and any other number of ways. So this book helps. Many people look at poker the wrong way. They think to win they need to do all of this super fancy plays and mindblowing stunts. Well folks...there are not that many options in poker...you fold, call or raise. So its really hard to do thinks that will just fool your opponents all the time. To win at poker it is mostly limiting your mistakes and getting all that you can from winning hands and minimizing losses on losing hands...that's it
Ive been playing for about 5 years now and love the game. Ive read many poker books and found this one to be very good. So I would suggest you buy this book and maybe a couple others and get to playing. There's really no excuse anymore - since anyone can access the internet...
For someone new to the game.......2004-03-17
This book was written for newer players that want to develop and extend their game. It contains a section discussing the different types of games that you might run into. The examples and simple suggestions on how different styles affect the game are great for the new player.
The best part of the book is the tables that give you the correct pot odds for your bet. They are great to commit to memory until you can calculate the odds yourself. I found that expected value and calculating pot odds are important in lower limit games and having these tables helps your stack from shrinking.
Clear Explanations of Hold'em Concepts.......2004-03-09
This is one of the most readable books on Hold'em that I've encountered. It has clear logical explanations of Hold'em fundamentals. The mathematical tables are very useful, and the books is filled with valuable reference and resource information. I'd recommend this book to anyone getting started in the game as a good all around guide for Hold'em.

Worst Text Ever.......2006-05-14
I'm currently working on my Master's degree and this is probably the worst book ever written. Without a doubt I can say that I have never read such a confusing book. This book contradict's itself while placing concepts together that shouldn't be placed together. The chapter's cover too much information without clearly explaining any given example that goes along with a section. If you can, avoid this book at all costs. If I'm not reviewing clearly it must be that I just finished the last exhausting chapter of this book.
