Early book structures analysed, described and illustrated.......2005-06-23
Histories of bookbinding almost all concentrate on the outward appearance and decoration, and ignore the construction of the book.
This is a great exception.
It is a very well written history of the early book from the very earliest codex forms, extremely well illustrated through photographs and beautifully readable structural diagrams.
Not a detailed manual for the beginner, but full of concepts and challenges for those with intermediate skills in book construction, and extended time to read it in digestible chunks.
Highly recommended.......2000-08-25
Charts, drawings and photographs complement the scholarly yet readable text so perfectly that I was able to recreate a 10th century binding correct in every detail after reading this book. Highly recommended for students of historical bookbinding particularly and binders and medievalists generally.

EXTRAORDINARY!.......2000-03-29
A scholarly study of medieval bookbindings filled with new information as well as references to previous studies on the subject both successful and unsuccessful in the light of modern research. The truly magnificent aspect of the book, however, is it's illustrations. Close up photos and detailed drawings of bindings, sewings, endbands, etc make this book a must-have for binders interested in recreating historically accurate books of this time period as well as for those fascinated by the subject in and of itself.

Very useful book - great classic patterns for men.......2007-07-05
It's so hard to find good knitting patterns for men's sweaters. I bought this book over 20 years ago and have found it indispensable. There are 29 classic designs from 1934 to 1980 so you are bound to find something you'd like to give your husband, boyfriend, father, son or brother.

The best of EQ.......2001-08-10
This is the last of the great Warp legacy. The new editions are fine, but this one was the most gripping and the last full edition of Wendy's art. Book 8 hs got to be the most emotional of all the series and to get that kind of emotional pull in a graphic novel is outstanding. If you can, please get ahold of the color editon. Fantastic!
Wonderful.......2000-12-15
My favourite out of all the elfquest books. It is richly filled to the brim with Wendy Pini's art, and even if it isn't the colour version of "Kings" it is excellent art. I recommend this book to any fan of elfquest, it is a wonderful additon to the elfquest series!
ElfQuest: A Review.......1996-06-02
The book, The Complete Elf Quest : Book Eight :
Kings of the Broken Wheel, is an enchanting graphic novel
about elves and their quest to survive. The pictures are
highly detailed and amazingly cool. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

The rules of the competition are simple: sound like Hemingway and be funny. A "Trophy Room" section here includes Papa parodies from the past by F. Scott Fitzgerald, E. B. White, Raymond Chandler, et al. Introduction by George Plimpton; caricatures.

.
Something happened on my pages and it was good.
Uproariously good bathtub nosh.
Quite possibly the funniest book I have ever read.......2001-05-17
Hemingway lovers and haters will be able to unite over this superlative collection of schlock Papa. The stories are universally strong, including some real gems by the likes of E.B. White, George Plimpton, and F. Scott Fitzgerald, as well as a host of uproariously funny takeoffs by less well known authors. I nearly fell over myself laughing in the bookstore when I picked up a copy and randomly started reading. Highest recommendation.
Don't need to be a Hemingway expert to love this book..........2001-03-30
I had only read one Hemingway novel but that was enough for me to laugh at every single story. Makes a perfect pick-me-up gift for anybody struggling with a Hemingway assignment or paper...
Papa would hate it........1999-11-02
The pages were filled to the margins with Bad Hemingway, and it was good.
Fun Fun Fun.......1999-02-12
If you read Hemingway you will understand this book. He was a strong character and his personality runs through his work so well that it is possible to emulate him. This book contains one-page stories in the Hemingway style, submitted by readers. Some of the entries are roaring funny, some sublime. All are good writing. If you are a dull old fuddy-duddy you might not like this...loosen up. It's fun.
Book Description
n this unique collection, New York Times film critic Rick Lyman sits down with notable directors, actors, screenwriters, cinematographers, and other film industry professionals to watch and discuss a movie that each person considers seminal or influential on his or her career. From Steven Soderbergh on how All the President's Men influenced Erin Brockovich and Traffic, to Woody Allen's, John Travolta's, Sissy Spacek's, and Kevin Smith's favorite movies, each interviewee's character is revealed in the resulting essays, which deepen our appreciation of landmark films, and give us extraordinary insight into the process of filmmaking. Lyman enhances every essay with a brief biography, career history, and complete filmography of each of the subjects, which puts them in a historical and creative context. Drawn from the enormously popular series in The New York Times, Watching Movies will fascinate film students and curious moviegoers alike.
Customer Reviews:
Watching Movies by Rick Lyman.......2003-09-01
This is an excellent work for people interested in the major
movie productions. The book is written from the perspective
of a consortia of movie directors associated with various films.
i.e. The Graduate, Cool Hand Luke, Blazing Saddles and a host of
other important films
The Graduate is described as a groundbreaking film. The character
of Dustin Hoffman is portrayed as the classic "clean cut kid of
the 60s". The work is helpful in providing needed perspective
from the professional directors who authored these types of films. This presentation would be helpful for students studying
the art of film production in college or graduate school.
Students seeking to produce their own film would find this
work helpful.

Late Beethoven: Music, Thought, Imagination
ASIN: 0803212224 |
Book Description
Fresh perspectives on the symphonies and piano concertos of Ludwig van Beethoven are offered in the inaugural volume of North American Beethoven Studies. To be published under the joint auspices of the University of Nebraska Press and the Ira F. Brilliant Center for Beethoven Studies, the volumes in the new series will focus on the life and work, milieu and influence of the great composer.
The first volume, edited by the noted music scholar and pianist William Kinderman, brings together recent studies by leading scholars on Beethoven’s major orchestral, including the first two piano concertos, the Egmont overture, the Missa Solemnis, and several of the symphonies, especially the Third, Fifth, and Ninth. They devote special attention to Beethoven’s creative process by analyzing, in some instances closely for the first time, his numerous surviving musical sketchbooks and loose sketch-leaves. The issues dealt with include Beethoven’s reinterpretation of the composition models of Haydn and Mozart, his working methods in composition, the structural expansion of his symphonic forms, the design of variation movements in his symphonies, and Beethoven’s musical symbolism. Four introductory essays probe the relation between Beethoven’s sketches and the analysis of his finished works; it is a fascinating and controversial undertaking.
The first volume of North American Beethoven Studies illuminates critical issues and challenges traditional interpretations of some of Beethoven’s most celebrated works while avoiding the narrow specialization of some recent scholarship. Future volumes will focus on performance practices, composition, and recording history.

learn from the greats.......2006-08-20
Essentailly all the games are taken from the authors' chess column that he writes for chess life. If someone is looking for a good book on attacking chess then I recommend solitair chess. My only grip is that most of the games are taken from early masters(Lasker, Tarrash, Pillsbury, etc.). None of the games included modern greats like Shirov, Kamsky, or Radjabov. So what that means is that most of theopenings are outdated or rather played incorrectly. Sometimes Pandolfini misses good positional moves and does not iclude them in his anaylsis. Overall a good book that should be read and enjoyed.
Lessons on how to attack.......2006-02-11
This is a compilation of 50 specially formatted games originally appearing in Chess Life. Each game is presented in column format. The reader is expected to cover the move notations with an index card, and guess White's moves in succession. Points are awarded or deducted, depending on the merits of the guessed moves. Additional bonus points are awarded in a separate page of labeled notes, depending on the reader's thoughts, move by move. The games are nearly all old classics (some ancient, and some not terribly well known). Each game is preceded with a very brief introductory paragraph, usually profiling the eventual winner.
There is little expository writing, but Pandolfini writes with flair. The games are interesting - they are nearly all ferocious attacks. The notes are very brief and don't get terribly deep; they address mostly tactical considerations and some elementary strategy.
With inexpensive chess engines (and inexpensive computers!) and internet chess services readily available, this book could be obsolete - IF you are only looking for a chess game. On the other hand, if you want effective chess training, this book can serve as a valuable tool. A relative beginner can use this book exactly as intended, and derive immediate feedback after each move selection, thus turning the game into a master lesson. An advanced player can go through the game in "blindfold" fashion (i.e., without the use of board and pieces), to strengthen skills in visualizing, calculating and analyzing. In any case, studying master games by trying to guess the moves is an excellent way to improve.
I have a small grumble, which is that the games appear to have been re-issued without the benefit of computer-checking the analysis. In Game 1, for instance, 12.Nxe4 is objectively at least as good as the move played, but it receives no credit; 14.Bb3 is given 5 points credit, but it is actually a blunder, allowing the opponent to claw back into the game; in move 21 there are two other ways to achieve mate in 3 that are not credited.
Again, this is a collection of mostly attacking games; those preferring a wider variety of themes (strategic maneuvering, endgames, etc.) may turn instead to Daniel King's "Test Your Chess" or Buckley's "Multiple Choice Chess I and II". These alternatives also contain games that are more recent, and give more attention to positional ideas.
Like the Chess Column in Chess Life.......2005-09-10
I like doing Solitaire Chess though it has its limitations (computer chess has made this a bit obsolete). This book is like the chess column the author writes in chess life, except put into a book. A modest effort was put into the quality of the analysis.

If you can get this cheap -- buy it!.......1998-08-31
Bruce Pandolfini modeled his column in Chess Life after this little book and has improved on Horowitz' original idea. If you are used to tackling Pandolfini's column, this book will be a little disappointing. The explanations here are a little more simplistic and the grading system is more vague, but one can't help but learn from working hard at studying a game of chess. I got my copy for a quarter at a used book sale -- if you can find one for a few bucks -- buy it.

Good Book but a bit dry.......2007-10-02
This is a dry but business-like book that presents all the essentials of strategic planning for public and nonprofit organizations. The book is well organized with concepts well explained. The book provides comprehensive coverage of the practical planning techniques and processes for those working for the common good. The author correctly highlights the critical importance of the link between strategic planning and leadership. John Bryson presents a useful planning process called "the Strategy Change cycle" which is a handy model successfully used in some public and nonprofit organizations.
This is a thoughtful, useful and helpful reference and guide book for those working in government, social workers or managers in non-governmental organizations. After reading the book, you will be clear about the differences between strategic planning process in the private sector and in the public and not-for-profit organizations. You will also learn how to reduce the costs of providing services whilst improving the quality of those services.
The book is well illustrated with insightful examples which will help practitioners learn about successful strategy formulation and implementation.
Textbook Review.......2007-09-04
I was pleased with the receipt of the textbook in a very timely manner. It was received within 4 business days. Also, no shipping fee, thanks for the savings.
dry reading material.......2007-01-08
This book, although required for the course I was enrolled in, was overall a waste of money. The reading material was very dry, making it a pain to follow. I learned more by showing up for class, taking good notes and involving myself in the group discussions, than what I learned from attempting to ingest the contents of this book.
Strategic Planning for Public and Nonprofit Organizations: A Guide to Strengthening and Sustaining Organizational Achievement, 3.......2006-11-03
Excellent public sector response to what we normally see as a business model for strategic planning. Very practical and easy to follow for all managers in the public service, non-profit organizations and non-governmental organizations doing charitable work for the common good.
A college textbook that has crossed over into the nonprofit world as a treatise for "non-students" on strategic planning........2006-09-05
I certainly liked this book a lot, but I didn't love it. Ergo, it gets a 4 star rating. If you want a detailed account regarding strategic planning, then read this book. It is well documented and clearly organized. Unfortunately it is boring!
The author is a college professor whose expertise is strategic planning in the nonprofit and government sectors. It certainly is normal to see a college professor take a subject and break it down into tiny parts and then build a textbook around describing how the tiny parts all fit together. In the case of this book, the author has broken the subject of strategic planning into tiny parts and called the combination of the tiny parts the Strategic Change Cycle ("SCC"). To see his nice diagram of the SCC turn to page 33 of the text.
After letting the reader see what the SCC is, the author then takes the rest of the book to explain the diagram and how all of its parts fit together. There are three sections to the book:
1. Understanding SCC
2. Key steps to using SCC
3. Managing the SCC process
Each chapter has a summary at its end. Someone who wants to get through the book as quickly as possible will start by reading each chapter's summary and then go back and skim through each of the chapters. Much of the content is common sense, so it shouldn't take all that long to read. However, there will be sections where you will probably want to slow down and digest in depth some of the material.
Leaders must be effective strategists if nonprofits are to be successful. And leaders use strategic planning and its set of concepts, procedures and tools in order to make their nonprofits successful.
In its simplest form strategic planning is all about knowing where you stand and knowing where you want to be. Then you "strategically plan" how you are going to get to where you want to be. What action steps are you going to take to move from point A to point B? This book will help you understand that process if you are having trouble with it right now.
