Book Description

This classic history of Walt Disney's life and works asks penetrating questions about Disney's achievements and shortcomings, and the enormous popularity of the Disney version. One of the best studies ever done on American popular culture...unfailingly, consistently intelligent, and eminently readable. --Stephen J. Whitfield, Brandeis University. This may be the single most illuminating work on America and the movies. --Robert W. Butler, Kansas City Star

3 out of 5 stars There's a Better Bio on Disney.......2007-03-16

I recently read both this and Neal Gabler's "Walt Disney, Triumph of the American Imagination," and Gabler's book (recently released) is an extroardinarily well-written (and detailed) attempt to give a balanced version of Uncle Walt. This book, unfortunately, has a point of view that is unwilling to take note of contrary evidence (although there is an interesting story here about the Disneyfication of American Culture, this book is simply too one sided.

2 out of 5 stars Stream-of-Consciousness writing.......2005-05-02

Taking into account the fact that this book is almost 40 years old, I found it extremely hard to follow. The author makes many pop-culture references pertinent to the time that I cannot relate to (as if he expects the reader to be a Hollywood-insider/contemporary of Disney's). The book skips around to different time periods and is very dry. This is NOT a biography, as I thought, more of a commentary on Disney's impact on American culture and entertainment, as it quickly summarizes Disney's formative experiences as if the reader is expected to be familiar with them.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent read, but how credible is the information?.......2003-06-12

Schickel does a good research and puts facts down as they are, but he analyzes those facts from his own point of view. He thinks Disney works have manipulated masses who were of an inferior intellect and the company made fortune out of it.
While this may be true, the book could have been more balanced, with an unbiased view, mentioning many favorable things the Company created.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not great.......2002-12-29

The book is definitly an in depth coverage of what happened in the early years of the Disney company, but it's definitly more of a history of the company than a biography of Walt.

3 out of 5 stars Are you sure this is a biography?.......2002-03-09

More of a social history of cartoons and the movies and the common man, than that of an unbiased look at Walt Disney.
I felt that the author believed himself above us common Midwest, small town folks, and felt pity on us that we didn't know that we were stupid and liked such low brow things like Mary Poppins, Snow White and Silly Symphonies. I think he equates pop culture with trash. I guess the millions and millions of people around the world that just want decent entertainment, and not some hidden meaning that needs interpretation, are fools. Or is he just jealous?

                  5 out of 5 stars Delightful........2007-03-22

A fine collection of the stranger part of the West. Good cartooning, & absorbing reading.

There is a sub-genre of Westerns, growing in strength, call the Weird West.

Anybody who likes this book would enjoy--Daisy Kutter: The Last Train

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Informative.......2006-03-27

This collection of black and white entertaining comic-style renderings of vignettes about the West is really well put together. Most of the stories concern actual events from the times of Manifest Destiny to Turner's "End of the Frontier", though there are few ghost/supernatural stories set in a western setting for the reader looking for items of a "weird" bent.

Note: Everything included in the collection is backed with bibliographic citations. Thus this collection with judicious use could be used as a supplement to a study of American History.

5 out of 5 stars NOT LIKE A JOHN WAYNE MOVIE..........2003-05-27

One of the many "Big Books" from Factoid Press, this volume delivers up a multitude of disturbing, humorous, and crazy tales from the West of yesteryear. Cleverly (and sometimes graphically) illustrated, this book would probably not be a good read for anybody who believes that the Old West was John Wayne-esque, where the good guy always won the duel and got the lady. The real West was more like a spaghetti western, where even the good guys were cut from a dubious cloth. Included in this volume are the stories of the ill-fated Donner Party (who were forced to dine on one another), Six Gun Slade (whose treatment of his opponent was surely an inspiration on Quentin Tarantino), Liver-Eatin' Johnson (the name says it all), Cowboys vs. UFO's, the slaying of a prehistoric bird in Arizona, and many, many others. Perhaps most amazing was how frequently people crossed the line from outlaw to lawman- it's almost as if being a murderer or train robber was a necessary prerequisite for a law enforcement job! The role of blacks, women, and homosexuals is discussed with refreshing frankness, and the clash between Anglo, Spanish, and Indian cultures is addressed as well. This book is entertaining and educational at the same time, and highly recommended to anybody with the slightest interest in what went on in the real Old West.

4 out of 5 stars Wild, Wild West?.......2001-02-23

Paradox press adds another "Big Book Of..." that shares the same flavour of it's "brothers". A wide style of illustration helps the feel of this book, as do the wide array of "tales" culled from the period. Nice that they included several not-so-well-known tales. Note: this is NOT a refrence guide, but an rather enjoyable read.

                  4 out of 5 stars YEE-HAH!.......2000-04-23

The Old West is full of legends. And you'll find a passel of 'em in this volume from Paradox Press. Many of the stories spotlighted here are a mixture of American history and mythology. But as the Unsinkable Molly Brown (who is featured in the book) would say, "It makes for a good story!"

Quino is just a mind-boggling genius. Everything is funny, everything is still applicable to things happening today. My dad had most of them when I was a little girl, and I started buying them for myself. Best seven dollars I have ever spent.

I adored these cartoons when I learned to speak Spanish years ago. While Mafalda's political leanings were definitely a product of the time and place, her interpretation of the adult world is hysterical and sharply insightful. I am only sad that I can no longer understand many of them since I haven't used Spanish for so long.

Prior to this meticulously researched biography, legendary producer Sam Spiegel had loomed large in countless Hollywood memoirs, but was rarely the subject of close examination. Praiseworthy for negotiating a maze of apocryphal stories and unverified details, Sam Spiegel solves many of the mysteries resulting from the falsehoods of "Spiegelese," for the renowned producer--whose crowning achievements included The Bridge on the River Kwai and Lawrence of Arabia--was perhaps the most inventive liar to gain prominence in Hollywood. With a refreshing absence of judgment, this unflinching study portrays Spiegel as a consummate manipulator, hedonist, philanderer, absentee father, sexaholic (a foot fetishist who favored young girls well into his '70s), and globetrotting entertainer of the social elite, "incapable of guilt" and so charming that he could achieve miracles (and numerous faked heart attacks, to disarm his detractors) while producing some of the greatest films of Hollywood's post-Golden era.

As a first-time biographer, Natasha Fraser-Cavassoni (a French journalist who worked as an assistant on Spiegel's final film, 1983's Betrayal) fails to plumb the depths of Spiegel's enigmatic character (so effectively hidden behind his luxurious lifestyle), offering little insight into Spiegel's unique combination of intellect and roguish insincerity. She compensates with a journalist's greatest assets: exacting research and seemingly limitless access to Spiegel's surviving contemporaries, from the late Billy Wilder to On the Waterfront director Elia Kazan and many, many others. The result is a fair and balanced portrait of one of Hollywood's classiest scoundrels, a master thief with impeccable taste and an uncanny instinct for cinematic prestige. --Jeff Shannon

                      Book Description

The incredible life and times of Hollywood's most iconoclastic producer, the miracle worker who went from penniless refugee to show biz legend, and made possible The African Queen, On the Waterfront, The Bridge on the River Kwai and Lawrence of Arabia, not to speak of many more, including movies as distinct as Suddenly, Last Summer; Nicholas and Alexandra; The Last Tycoon; and Betrayal; all of them sharing the unique vision that earned Spiegel twenty-five Oscars: star-filled, bigger-than-life, conceived on a vast scale, intensely dramatic, and overwhelmingly ambitious.

In this rich and brilliant biography, Natasha Fraser-Cavassoni, who had the advantage of knowing and working for Spiegel, brings into sharp focus a Hollywood legend who was at once crafty, unscrupulous, mendacious, and equally capable of great charm and petty meanness, who was sentimental and ruthless, a shrewd judge of talent, a gambler on a colossal scale, a man of almost unique artistic vision and courage who was, in the final analysis, that most elusive and rare of movie producers, a genius.

The story of a how a Jewish refugee without a penny to his name managed to produce several of the greatest films of all time is alone worth telling, but Natasha Fraser-Cavassoni has done more; she has drawn the definitive portrait of the man himself -- the elusive, witty, cynical adventurer who, like so many refugees, was able to live, succeed, and raise money everywhere, but who was at home nowhere. Spiegel surrounded himself with luxury and beautiful women but remained a loner despite his countless friends.

Spiegel was mysterious about his origins, prompting Arthur Miller to refer to him as "The Great Gatsby." In reality, he was born of middle-class Jewish parents in the last years of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Raised in Jaroslav, in western Galicia, Spiegel left home in his late teens and quickly became a hero of the Hashomer Hatzair, a Zionist youth movement.

Step by step, with immense research and a vast number of interviews, Natasha Fraser-Cavassoni recreates the world of Sam Spiegel's childhood and youth, separating often self-serving fiction from fact. She follows Spiegel's dramatic flight from the Nazis in Berlin, a prison sentence in London, problems with the police in Paris and Mexico City, and finally his arrival in Los Angeles. In America his career languished for a time, though he acquired a reputation for being a supreme "fixer," a brilliant luftmensh on the fringes of Hollywood power, the ultimate party-giver who knew everybody's secrets and was always quick to charm women and take advantage of men. Billy Wilder called him "a modern day Robin Hood, who steals from the rich and steals from the poor."

With a brilliant sense of time and place and a deep understanding of Spiegel's complex personality, Fraser-Cavassoni traces his disasters, successes, romances, friendships, and tangled finances in a narrative that is rich with colorful Spiegel stories, scandals, and bon mots.

The cast of characters in Spiegel's life includes Lauren Bacall, Humphrey Bogart, Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift, Robert De Niro, Barry Diller, David Geffen, Katharine Hepburn, John Huston, Elia Kazan, David Lean, Joseph L. Mankiewicz, Mike Nichols, Harold Pinter, Otto Preminger, Elizabeth Taylor, Gore Vidal, Orson Welles, Billy Wilder, Darryl F. Zanuck, bevies of beautiful women, three wives, countless members of high society, and, most important, Sam Spiegel himself -- the last of the great independent film producers who, in the swashbuckling tradition of David O. Selznick and Sam Goldwyn, operated alone, aimed high, and believed, above all, in their own star.

More than a major book about the movie business, Sam Spiegel is an intricate and engrossing biography, comparable in its richness, depth, and attention to detail to A. Scott Berg's acclaimed biography of Samuel Goldwyn. It is a marvelous, once-in-a-lifetime reading experience and an astonishing debut for Natasha Fraser-Cavassoni.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre at best.......2004-05-06

I have a deep interest for history, especially Hollywood history, and Sam Spiegel is a name that crops up all over the place and, until now, has really garnered very little attention in the way of biography relative to his peers. Natasha Fraser-Cassavoni had a personal relationship with Spiegel (he produced a film based on a play by her stepfather Harold Pinter) and is perhaps as qualified as anyone to write the life story of this great producer.

The problem is, although his catalog of films can stand alongside that of anyone in the history of the industry, as a person he doesn't really have any particular standout characteristics that make you take any real interest in him beyond his work. Instead he seems to fit the bill as the stereotype of the Hollywood producer and maybe that alone is enough to make him interesting, but it doesn't come across. The best chapters focus on the films, not the man. There's no denying he was very good at what he did, but this book proved a supreme disappointment simply because I came away not knowing anything more than what I could have learned from a basic filmography. Three stars is a more than generous rating but I give it that because the films are worth the analysis.

                      1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-01-16

I found this book difficult to read much less follow. I have a great interest in "old" Hollywood and have read many books on the subject. This book would be at the bottom of the list.

                      4 out of 5 stars French journalist?.......2003-04-06

Astonishing mistake in the Editorial Review above. That Natasha Fraser could be called a "French journalist" boggles the mind, since her father was the British M.P. Hugh Fraser, her mother is Lady Antonia Fraser (herself daughter of the Earl and Countess of Longford), and her mother is married to Harold Pinter! Authors all.

This woman comes from as distinguised a line of BRITISH authors as can be imagined.

The story of Shania Twain' remarkable achievement and undaunted spirit. She is the best-selling country woman artist in history, despite controversy over her Native roots and suggestive, midriff-baring videos. Raised poor in a Native family in a northern Canadian mining town, she supported her siblings after her parents' deaths by singing in a cabaret, where she was discovered by Mercury Records. Her career languished until she met fabled producer Mutt Lange, who encouraged her to record her own songs and proposed marriage. With steadfast integrity, they revolutionized the spirit of country music, crossing genres from country to pop and rock and forging new possibilities for country women artists.

4 out of 5 stars Every guide should be so thorough.......2005-09-07

How much can you say for a game guide? Well, quite a bit actually--some are little more than a cursory walk through, while some may have more about the game (or game series) history than it devotes to walk throughs, and secrets. The Rayman 3 guide is not like that at all. While it doesn't give you much about Rayman's history, or the story, it certainly has everything else you would expect it to have. It has no maps, but you don't really need them--Rayman's world in R3 is fairly linear, and there isn't much chance of you needing a map. The walkthroughs are adequate, and more importantly highlight major scoring opportunities, and access to secret rooms. Having a scoring table for the various levels was a very nice touch as well since most platform games tend to focus as much on score as story, and being no exception, Rayman 3 also gives the player much incentive to play for a score worthy of posting on the hall of fame at the site. Being given an enemies list was another good touch, and can be helpful but not as much so as the score table.

The guide covers all platforms Rayman 3 is available for, is logically laid out, and very easy to read and use. It also spotlights the scoring thresholds needed to unlock the bonus games, and hoodlum training tapes. My primary reason for giving the guide a good rating is because before I picked it up for half price, and began playing for 100% level completion, and as near to optimal score as I could get, I was overlooking much of the challenge Rayman 3 has to offer--it's hard not to believe that the game might have been more popular if more people had bought the guide along side it. Overall, this guide is a very good companion for the game, is very helpful, and comes highly recommended.

                        Book Description

A concise and user-friendly guide to the essentials for conducting a meeting by the official Robert's Rules of Order authorship committee.

In a club, a condo association, or a board of overseers, how is business carried over from one meeting to the next? How is a meeting best kept on track? Who keeps the order and who decides what the agenda will be in the first place?

The answers to these concerns of assembly can be found in the rulebook of orderly meetings: Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised 10th Edition. But weighing in at over 700 pages, at least 80 percent of its content will be needed less than 20 percent of the time. Those not well versed in parliamentary procedure can find themselves lost while trying to get guidance on the everyday basics.

The solution? Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised Concise. Written by the officially sanctioned Robert's Rules of Order authorship team, this short and user-friendly "cheat-sheet" of a guide briefs readers on the rules most often needed at meetings--from debates and amendments to votes and nominations. With sample dialogues, helpful references to the "big" book throughout, and handy tips for elected or appointed officials, Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised in Brief is the essential abbreviated meeting rulebook.

5 out of 5 stars Just what my family needed.......2007-06-10

I've felt for years that dinner conversations among my wife, my son, and me have lacked any kind of formality. It seems that synopses of the day's events, proposals for upcoming family activities, and decision making about such matters as "in what order should we wash the dishes...silverware first, or glassware first?" were being made in a way that could, at best, be described as wildly haphazard.

And so it was that my wife proposed (and my son seconded) that we impose a bit of rigor into the proceedings of the evening meal. This seemed, at first, to be the ideal solution to the chaotic approach to eating to which we had become sadly accustomed. But a new problem immediately arose: Who will decide on a set of guidelines by which we can all abide? We wanted rules, but we had no set of "metarules" to guide us in how to develop, vote on, and approve the dinner rules.

Needless to say, whenever our family is stuck in this kind of self-referential loop of "what rules do we use to guide us in creating a set of rules?", we consulted Amazon. I soon stumbled upon both Roberts Rules of Order, and this "Brief" version of the original. I laughed immediately at the idea of using an unabridged version of Robert's Rules to govern our family dinner conversations. To impose that level of formality on something as informal as dinner seemed a bit crazy, if you ask me. But the "brief" version of Robert's Rules is just what the family needs.

Family conversations in the evening have improved (as best we can measure) threefold. My seven-year-old son has learned to listen attentively to proposals, and to consider all discussed points before voting on issues such as what time to go to bed on school nights, and whether to eat a piece of fruit or a piece of candy for a bedtime snack. My wife has learned that the minutes she prepares for the evening meal need not be (indeed, should not be) filled with details about what was said. Instead, she focuses on "what happened" at each meal. This has cut nearly in half the amount of time it takes her to write up the minutes, giving her a little extra time to focus on preparing the martini she hands me when I get home from the office. That little extra time has made the martini both a little dryer, and a little dirtier (she now has time to add a little olive juice...try it!).

In short, if you are looking to better organize your family's dinner meetings, and your martinis are becoming rather lackluster, Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised in Brief might be just the solution.

5 out of 5 stars Clear and concise.......2007-05-21

Robert's Rules of Order, Newly Revised, does precisely what it says it will do: it sets out clearly and concisely the distillation of decades of parliamentary procedure. Unfortunately (unless the organization is writing laws that will affect people's lives and livelihoods), if one needs this book in order to resolves disputes, the organization is probably in deeper trouble than can be fixed by a mere book. Still we soldier on. This is one more tool to assist in developing effective leadership, but isn't much help when it comes to coping with troublemakers.

Since Robert's Rules of Order first was published in 1896, it's been the means to orderly, smooth, and fairly conducted meetings. This ninth edition of the famous manual of parliamentary procedure includes everything from the first edition, but all of the information is clarified, cross-referenced, and carefully indexed. "Where there is no law, but every man does what is right in his own eyes, there is the least of real liberty," said General Henry M. Robert, and his gift of order is as indispensable now as it was a century ago.

                        Book Description

The only authorized parliamentary procedure guide, completely revised and updated by the authorized Robert's Rules Authorship Committee.

Originally published as a slim document in 1896, General Henry M. Robert's classic guide to smooth, orderly, and fairly conducted meetings has sold close to five million copies in nine editions. The only book containing the completely developed Robert's Rules of Order subject matter, this latest edition will continue the book's reputation as the gold standard of meeting procedure for parliamentarians and novice club presidents and members alike. Thoroughly revised and updated to reflect the past decade's technological advances and usage, this tenth edition contains new information on how to conduct meetings over the Internet, on phone and video conference calls, and with members in absentia. The best book from which to learn all about running and taking an effective part in meetings, General Robert's gift of order is as indispensable now as it was a century ago.

I had to have this, due to meetings that I was attending. I was glad that I could get it from Amazon, instead of drive to a book store two hours away. I live " in the country".

                        5 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive.......2007-09-13

I do very light parliamentary work mostly in committee meetings (say as Secretary/Treasurer), but wanted the most authoritative reference I could have for those occasional times when I really want to know fully how to handle a situation, like 'can anyone just call a question and stop discussion'? No, it takes 2/3 vote to shut off debate. Or, should the names of the people who make a motion and second be in the minutes or does the board vote as a whole and so any detail like that would take away from the vote as a whole? The book says the motioner's name should be in unless it's a minor matter and not the seconder's name. I've got Roberts Rules in Plain English which is pretty good too, but I suppose this is a case where I just wondered what more detail I was missing and, after decades of hearing about it, I just decided to go ahead and get it. And I'm glad I did.

(By the way, I like meetings to be quick, efficient and effective, as Im sure most people do. I find compared to just having a group sitting around chatting, that using a 'light' form of parliamentary procedure really brings each matter to a close more quickly and helps move my meetings along.)

Robert's is a must have if you are administrating meetings of an association. It provides the knowledge to run a sensible meeting with little conflict.

5 out of 5 stars It is THE authority, after all.......2007-07-16

What can you really say about RR? This is _the_ authority on parliamentary procedure, and the new revision is great. It has really brought RR up to the present, handling things like tele/videoconferences, e-mail, etc. It also does a nice job of clarifying some points, always by going back to the basic principles behind the rules. This is definitely an improvement over the 9th edition -- worth spending the money to upgreade.

I bought Robert's Rules of Order because I live in a Homeowner's Association that is not run properly and we are in the process of holding elections to make some changes. I used to work as an Executive Secretary for New York State and I found that I have forgotten a lot of the protocol for holding meetings. A neighbor suggested that I purchase this book and I'm very glad that I did. It has brought back to mind much of what I remember as an Executive Secretary, and then some. It's been very helpful.

This is the book that is a must have for your library. Other parlimentary procedure books make it easy to understand, but this is foundation book. It is small enough to travel with you and very easy to read. You don't really need any "quick find" or "condensed" versions.

This volume is an excellent reference for those whose organizations are trying to establish its bylaws or Parliamentary authority. For those organizations whose bylaws prescribe "Roberts Rules of Order - Revised" or "the current edition of Roberts Rules of Order" or the like as their parliamentary authority, this is the most current volume. Most interesting and convenient is a section of Charts, Tables and Lists, which clearly explain the rules relating to motions, and samples of them. This, though currently out of print, should be the Parliamentarian's companion, and a good Chair's counsel.
