Book Description
Los Angeles has nourished a dazzling array of independent cinemas: avant-garde and art cinema, ethnic and industrial films, pornography, documentaries, and many other far-flung corners of film culture. This glorious panoramic history of film production outside the commercial studio system reconfigures Los Angeles, rather than New York, as the true center of avant-garde cinema in the United States. As he brilliantly delineates the cultural perimeter of the film business from the earliest days of cinema to the contemporary scene, David James argues that avant-garde and minority filmmaking in Los Angeles has in fact been the prototypical attempt to create emancipatory and progressive culture.
Drawing from urban history and geography, local news reporting, and a wide range of film criticism, James gives astute analyzes of scores of films--many of which are to found only in archives. He also looks at some of the most innovative moments in Hollywood, revealing the full extent of the cross-fertilization the occurred between the studio system and films created outside it. Throughout, he demonstrates that Los Angeles has been in the aesthetic and social vanguard in all cinematic periods--from the Socialist cinemas of the early teens and 1930s; to the personal cinemas of psychic self-investigation in the 1940s; to attempts in the 1960s to revitalize the industry with the counterculture's utopian visions; and to the 1970s, when African Americans, Asian Americans, Latinos, women, gays, and lesbians worked to create cinemas of their own. James takes us up to the 1990s and beyond to explore new forms of art cinema that are now transforming the representation of Southern California's geography.
Customer Reviews:
David James's Radical Act.......2005-05-18
In this brilliant and comprehensive history of alternative cinema in Los Angeles, David James performs a profoundly radical act-- he reclaims Los Angeles from Hollywood. For all of us who have been struggling daily, over months, years and decades, and against all odds to produce cinematic works in the heavy shadow of "the industry", this amazing book is both moving and empowering.
Magnificent use of the art historian responsabilities.......2005-04-25
This work is an exploration of the classical (Robert Florey, Maya Deren...), modern and contemporary territories of the avant-garde cinema in Los Angeles and the West Coast. It reveals and explains a fascinating tradition of films as innovative as largely unknown, that build alltogether something we could name the honor of the cinema. David E. James' book is deep, brilliant, imaginative, rich, subtle, sophisticated and perfectly clear. One can't imagine a more perfect use of the art and craft of a responsible historian of art , both responsible towards the freedom of art and towards the rigour of history.

Book Description
"Free speech no longer exists in America!"
So says Mancow Muller, one of the nation's most famous radio personalities and the man who shut down the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge as a political act. Mancow is the creator, writer, and ringmaster of what has been called the "funniest, fastest-moving, and most diverse radio show in history," Mancow's Morning Madhouse, syndicated nationally from Chicago. He has received so many prestigious awards for excellence in radio that his arm is constantly sprained from patting himself on the back. With political commentary, comedy bits, and whatever else comes into his head, Mancow also appears regularly on Fox News Channel's morning program Fox & Friends. And now, in his first book, Dad, Dames, Demons, and a Dwarf, Mancow rushes headlong into an adventure cross-dressed as a memoir.
When Mancow loses his dad -- his number one fan -- to cancer, he has a meltdown, spiraling down Freedom Road on a nonstop death ride: racing the autobahn at breakneck speeds, inhaling Amsterdam's pleasures, narrowly escaping an illegal visit to Castro's Cuba, suffering a near-fatal nervous breakdown, and cavorting under dog piles of women. All of these adventures send him on a mind trip through his past.
Terrorist teachers, hellfire preachers, and jails masquerading as public schools attack his intelligence and independence. But Mancow resists, screaming, "I'm not like everybody else! I'm not another brick for your wall!"
Mancow questions everything! "Do we already live in a police state?" "Must individual spirit be crushed?" "How much is that woman in the window?" "Who will join my fight against dwindling freedoms in this so-called Land of the Free?" "Do you want to get laid?"
Finding his soul again, he discovers a strange new freedom that only members of The Dead Dad's Club can understand. In this, his first humble masterpiece, Mancow wakes people up, makes you laugh, makes you think, makes you feel. Described as "a combination of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and Don Quixote, but with more sex," Dad, Dames, Demons, and a Dwarf takes you on a journey that kindles your independent spirit and knocks you to the floor with laughter.

An unfortunate let down........2007-07-23
This work came off as a false collection of stories that do not mirror the voice of Muller at all. Perhaps it's a ghost written project designed to cash in on it's subject.
Brilliant!.......2006-04-28
Hey for all those Mancow haters out there, do you hate freedom? Because Mancow is one of the last peeps willing to stand up and say what has to be said. Do you want the government limiting your free speech? I won't listen to the millions of Mancow detractors, they don't get what he's trying to do. They should just keep their opinions to themselves. I would love it if the government would make them shut up or they'd take their homes, right? I love how Mancow has acknowledged that he's always been comfortable with his lifestyle. He doesn't let narrow-minded or bigoted people get him down. He realized who he was early in life and said hey, "I make no apologies for who I am. This is the US of A and I'm free to love anyone I want, regardless of race, creed, religion or gender." So I salute you Mr. Mancow. We need more people willing to take on the establishment regardless of their intelligence level, poor facial hair choices and darkly Freudian attachments to their dads. Thank you!
better than expected from a cow.......2005-11-08
first i have never listened to mancow- only catching him a few times on the fox news channel morning show.(far right news is always funny). I bought the book at a disount bookstore because the cover intrigued me as did the hunter thompson references. Not expecting much really- i was suprised at a pretty decent counterculture read. Overall- there are some funny stories random "weird facts" and some personal antidotes, rants, and some views on our "corporate culture". Mancow muller makes some valid points and really can write at times. I was suprised to find that a man who loves the kinks could also love the moody blues-thats funny. Still its no "gonzo"- muller borrows thompsons style but really does not come close to the brilliance of the classic fear and loathing which some have said this book approaches. In the end i would recommend this book to certain friends - regular folks cant relate- or just wont understand a view that doesnt believe in marriage- that america is not the land of the free- and that sex with prostitutes and weed could be legal and not frowned down upon.
Short & Sweet Summary.......2005-10-04
Short and sweet: An excellent read if you're a Mancow fan, but the curious might find the book a little slow. It skips from life event to life event instead of having any natural progression. Cow needs a better editor.
..I don't understand.......2005-08-13
I brought this book over 4 months ago for $1.75. I am still trying desperately to read or finish this book..but..I can't. Sure I'm from Chicago and I listen to Mancow. I can understand his radio show...more then I can read his book.. and that puzzles me a lot..Maybe if mancow signes my book..maybe..just maybe. I could finish it...

With Teenage Confidential Chronicle Books presents another of their densely illustrated gift volumes, and, as usual, the layout and extremely rich color photos are dazzling. The imagery is so intense that it would be easy to miss the fluidly written history of the American teen that surrounds the illustrations. Pictures of shindigs and sock hops mix with reproductions from teen comic books and teenybopper record covers to provide a complete visual history of this oddly modern culture of fleeting youth desperately trying to have fun.
Book Description
When did those awkward, tormented creatures known as teenagers first crawl out of the primordial ooze and into American culture? Believe it or not, they didn't always exist. It was not until World War II, with grown men off fighting and grown women working in factories, that adolescents were left idle and unsupervised long enough to wreak havoc. In the forties, fifties, and sixties a new breed of youth evolved -- the juvenile delinquent -- and this state of emergency was quickly dramatized in every cultural medium. In Teenage Confidential, Michael Barson and Steve Heller conduct a guided tour through three decades of teen angst, displayed in shocking Technicolor on movie posters, paperbacks, comic books, advertising art, television shows, and Top Forty music paraphernalia. From Father Knows Best to Youth Runs Wild, this unflinching survey spotlights the sordid ways of our rebel youth.
Customer Reviews:
terrific refutation to those who think anything has changed.......1998-10-17
This is a fantastic compilation of American adults' images of teenagers in those so-pure 1930s, '40s, and '50s showing (in my view) what a warped perspective grownups display toward adolescents. This book should be a text in modern film and sociology classes, where the first exercise can be: "find the Latino" and "find the African American." More than dry treatises, the visuals in this book show that America's so-called adults in this century have maintained an irrational terror of teenagers that speaks to the awful, anti-youth climate of the '90s as much as the latest newspaper headline-lie. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Good for its time.......2006-01-31
This was a very good self-contained RPG for playing in the Sailor Moon universe when it came out. Its compatability to the version on BESM out at the time was also fairly decent. With the advent of Tri-Stat dX and BESM d20, this product begins to show signs of its age.
In addition to the RPG aspect, there is a lot of good art from the series. My only other complaint about it was guessing the eventual American names of the Outer Senshi based on the names given by the doll-making companies. While I would definitely rework it for Tri-Stat dX (d10) or BESM d20, it is still a worthwhile item for a Sailor Moon fan.
Great if you like the Anime.......2001-10-29
The book was in great deteailed, and helped with the plot lines for fans.If you are a fan of the Anime, this book is a most get.If you are mkainly a manga buff it isn't as important.
This book is a must have for anime/rpg lovers.......2001-10-19
My first experience with this book was my freshman year in college. Me and my friends go together and played a campaign in which there were no sailor scouts but just knights. We then of course got big eyes small mouth and expanded the possibilities of the gaming sphere. If you want to play an RPG that doesn't have mind boggling statistics then this is it, because everything is based of a roll of 2-12 on two 6 sided dice. Really easy system good for beginners and experts alike. Try it.
If you like Sailor Moon, you'll love this book!.......2001-09-18
Buy this! It's such a cool book. Now you can roleplay your favorite Scout and use your own wits to beat the Negaverse. This book features an easy-to-learn roleplaying game,a comprehensive Sailor Moon resource and reference section,a colour character gallery, and hundreds of Sailor Moon images.A summary of every episode in first two seasons is also included.
Woohoo! Role Playing!.......2001-03-16
If you like Role Playing and if you like Sailor Moon, you'll absolutely LOVE this book! Guardians of Order has come out with the absolutely simplest RP system possible. They call it the the Tri-Stat System. All you have are three stats and a couple of 6 sided dice. Roll up your character and assign some numbers and attributes... Now, you're ready to play! Based on the popular Anime series, Sailor Moon, this RPG is a sure hit. I've both played and run campaigns with this book and I've enjoyed being on both sides of the coin. Sailor Moon is a wonderful universe Role Play in and Guardians of Order couldn't possibly have made it any easier! Plus, with all the added resource material about the shows, OVAs, characters, and villians, this book is a must have for any serious SM fan!
Book Description
Two leading experts on gender issues in the workplace describe how indirect aggression among women undermines their professional and personal success, and explain how to change conflict into cooperation.
Following the success of Queen Bees and Wannabes and Odd Girl Out, about aggression in girls, In the Company of Women explains how indirect, or "relational," aggression can hurt women and hinder them from achieving success and harmony in their adult lives. Gender studies have shown that when a goal is in sight, men generally use direct action to attain it. Women, on the other hand, have been socialized to express aggressive actions through indirect means-using behavior such as shunning, stigmatizing, and gossiping to emotionally cripple those standing in the way of the achievement they seek.
With startling insights into the meaning of our everyday behavior, this book offers straightforward techniques to change conflict among women into cooperation by resolving discords peaceably, building relationships, and making the most of women's unique leadership and communication skills.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting reading.......2007-09-18
This book was pretty good. The first part validated what I pretty much figured out for myself the hard way. At least with the knowledge you get from this book that this type of behavior and attitude is universal among women everywhere and is "normal," you can deal with it more constructively or let it go more easily instead of dwelling on it. I did enjoy reading the first part of the book - probably 3/4 of the book was helpful because it validates what you know or can sense about what is going on around you, and that is empowering and reassuring. The guidance given in this book for dealing with other women is somewhat like remembering difficult algorithms though. And, unless you can convince every other woman you ever deal with to read the book and follow precisely the "rules" you have to follow in order to have perfect harmony among the women in your life, you still have to just use your gut instinct on how to deal with each particular woman or...well, you already know what will happen or you wouldn't be interested in reading this type of book! To be honest, I started reading the last part of the book (which directly relates to being in a supervisory position) and just couldn't read any more.
Wishing everyone (men and women) would read this!.......2007-05-08
I have struggled my entire life in relationships with women. This book opened my eyes.
Interesting theories, apply as you will.......2007-02-04
This is a thought-provoking book, and I recommend it for any woman, whether you work in an office or not. It says much about the conflicts that arise between us, the reasons behind them, and some solutions on how to handle them.
One of my favorite chapters was "Handling Conflicts With Style." I recently covered conflict styles in a college freshman seminar course, and I appreciated how they were expanded in this chapter. There are some interesting paragraphs on ow to handle sabotage and deliberate distractions, two things I have experienced firsthand and was poor at resonding to.
There are many wonderful suggestions in the chapter "How To Be An Effective Female Leader." Several aspects of leadership are discussed, and skills are suggested in detail, to balance the troubles many female leaders experience.
There are some parts of the book, however, that I do no agree with.
Although the Power Dead-Even Rule is absolutely true in every respect, it does little to solve the problem that I have with power-hungry, conrolling women in my work environment. Honestly, why should I care what gets a co-worker to turn against me? Of course, having some knowledge of the root of the problem is extremely beneficial at maintaining some sort of balance. At the end of the day, however, I am able to put my head on the pillow and fall asleep based simply on the advice I received from a dear friend:
It's not my business what other people think of me.
This may sound like foolish advice at first, but you know what? It's TRUE.
And the advice to use gossip as a tool is WAY off the mark. I have been able to maintain my position at my job for many years based on a principle that I believe deeply in - that gossip does NOTHING to improve anyone's character. You want to build trust among your coworkers? Don't gossip!! Find something else in common to discuss.
I'm a little irritated at the excuses given for indirect aggression - you know what? A person's personal issues should be worked out before or after work, there's no excuse for a bitch.
Downplaying your achievements is good to keep in mind. But ultimately, you really should be yourself, not a puppet. My point is, when you apply what you gain from this book, don't forget what you have learned before.
This Book has Changed my Life........2006-05-08
I have to say, I felt pretty disgusted with myself, having to pretend to be insecure and self-depreciating, just to get other women to like me. But by God it works.
I tested the techniques out on my very next female customer. I refused to accept her compliments, kept downplaying myself and my accomplishments, while praising her instead and pointing out all the ways in which I felt she was better.
Result: She LOVED me. We actually linked arms and skipped! No kidding! She convinced her husband to give me $500 on a job that wasn't worth half that much money.
Not only is this book helpful in avoiding petty jealousy, the evil eye, and female sabotage, applied to business situations it can be a real cash cow!!! $$$
Take those psychology books that advise you to "Project Self Confidence!" and "Toot Your Own Horn!" and throw them in the garbage. If you are not a man, that will not work for you.
This one tip alone will save your friendships: Don't you dare ever tell a woman good news. If you have good news tell a man. If you have bad news tell a woman.
If you're just bustin' to tell all the girls how your new boyfriend is rich, famous and hunky, DON'T, unless you a have your own personal security detail and somebody willing to start your car for you.
If they find out anyway, make your good fortune sound negative. Tell them he beats you and he slept with your sister. : P
I can sum the whole book up for you: Women can't stand to see another woman happy, especially if they're not. Better learn how to operate within the "Power Dead Even" Rule.
Women Working Wisely.......2006-02-06
This book has been an invaluable reference and resource for me. Pat Heim's experience in addressing relationally aggressive behaviors between women in the workplace shows through in every page she writes. With "In the Company of Women" she adds one more feather to her impressive cap and advances each reader's understanding of this important issue.
