Crumb is undoubtedly the foremost cartoonist of the latter 20th Century, and his sketchbooks—in which he has written and drawn continually from the early 1960s to present—might rank as his finest achievement. Volume 10, covering mid-1975 through early 1977, is the latest and it represents one of the more inquisitive and soul-searching periods in this phenomenal artist's life.
These sketchbooks represent, in essence, something never before achieved in the field of art and literature: a single, unified, organic, (and ongoing) life's work. Even more so than the painter Frida Kahlo's drawn diaries, Crumb's sketchbooks are, as a body of work, incomparable in their magnitude, scope, and intensity, and therein lies their uniqueness and value.
Unrecognizable as straight autobiography, these books chronicle Crumb's perceptions more than his life itself. The cumulative effect of these sketchbooks is to narrow the gap between the artist and his art; or, to put it another way, to create such an intimacy as to render the profound connection between art and humanity palpable.
These sketchbooks also stand as a monumental existential document. Crumb repeatedly expresses, through a variety of of penetrating and coruscating visual metaphors, the central existentialist struggle: to live in the full light of consciousness with all the risk, pain and suffering that entails. Nowhere is this more apparent than in this tenth volume, which coincides with the disintegration of the late-1960s counterculture that made him famous. Like every volume in the series, though, Volume 10 offers the full panoply of a life of perceptions rendered with consummate artistry.

After the disappointing bio by Sue Tilley, Leigh Bowery can finally wink at us down here at earth. This book gives a great view on his work, throughout the eighties and nineties. Leigh was a chameleon in ideas and appearances. Allthough some of his looks were almost frightening, looking trhough the pages of this book one cannot escape from his originality and creativity. Leigh lived too short to get acknowledged for his ideas. Instead designers like Westwood, Gaultier and van Beirendonck use his ideas. But as Leigh claimed during his life: "Even my ideas filter through. The publics idea of beauty is fed to them." He fed them with something else. Thanx for that.

It certainly fits all the criteria for Art, despite the fact that these "looks" aren't framed and hanging on a wall in some gallery, but rather worn by the always beautiful, legendary Leigh Bowery. These photographs, however, most certainly could be. And don't let this paperback's relatively small size fool you. These portraits are rich and vivid, showing not only an incredible amount of detail and color, but also giving a definite sense of character and performance from Bowery. This man lived for dressing in these outlandish costumes. They are not simply "shocking" they are genuinely thought provoking. They play with and skewer concepts of gender, of beauty and of propriety. That is the true genius of Bowery. Kudos must obviously go also to the photographer Fergus Greer for capturing Bowery in these fantastic poses and in such amazing lighting. A wonderful book that is thankfully now back in print, "Leigh Bowery Looks" is an invaluable piece of performance art history not to be missed by anyone interested in fashion or photography.

If you've been following this series, this volume does not disappoint. It picks up where vol 2 left off which is unusual for Koike and co. And it also shows another side to our heroine which deepens her character. Check it out. A definite purchase versus reading it at the shelf.

Innovative methods for conservation and beautification using native plants........2005-09-05
I have lived in Phoenix for 25 years. I have a large lot and little success in landscaping. If it looked good it took too much time to maintain and my water bills were sky high. What to do? After 6 weeks in a wheelchair and an irrigation failure I happened on Scott Calhoun's book. He has so many new and practical ideas that will produce a good looking landscape and not be a slave to it. Living in Tucson, he is very savvy about conserving water more than we are in Phoenix. He talks about harvesting water and grading a property to better direct rainfall to planting beds. New ideas for me. I am really quite excited about the opportunities that I recognize now from reading this book.
Oh and if that isn't enough, the book is quite beautiful. Lots of color photography. Many plant varieties are pictured. The writer generously shares his experience of learning about building a "green" home and surrounding it with a true Sonoran desert landscape.
I have lots of books on desert gardening and they all have merit.This is the first one that has given me a new insight into where I live and my responsibility to the ecology of my spot in the desert.
A true inspiration to me.
Excellent Desert Landscaping Adventure.......2005-06-21
Scott takes us on a very personal journey from the building of his home through the design and planting of his garden in the Sonoran desert of Tucson, Arizona. The book is packed with marvelous photos of the house and garden plants, flowers and trees that comprise his little domestic world. The photo quality and color rendition are quite excellent and provide ample evidence of the remarkable variety of plant hues that are made possible by the magical combination of water and brilliant southern Arizona sunshine. Those unfamiliar with this kind of environment will be surprised by the extraordinary palette of color that Scott has lovingly created. He also takes great pride in showing that his award-winning garden, featured in SUNSET and HORTICULTURE magazines,is not an east-coast transplant, but an authentic representation of his region.
The beginning gardener as well as the experienced landscape designer will find an abundance of information and creative inspiration from the first to the last page. The appendices in the back for example, are a real gold mine of useful material.
Even if you don't live in the Sonoran desert, you will enjoy Scott's journey and his warm, relaxed narrative style of writing. However, make no mistake. I thoroughly enjoyed Yard Full of Sun, renegade horticulturist Scott Calhoun's humorous and detailed account of the creation of his family's Arizona home and garden. Mr. Calhoun's funny anecdotes about the challenges of adobe home construction and his startlingly honest observations of married life enhance, but do not obscure the wealth of fascinating information he has compiled about drought-resistant plants, garden design, and water conservation. The author's authentic voice and the rich details he includes make me want to drink Tecate under the Mesquite tree in the Calhouns' backyard and eat tacos at their favorite tire repair shop. The glorious photographs provide endless ideas for the design and decoration of outdoor living spaces, and the useful appendices should prove invaluable to novice and experienced desert gardeners alike. Perhaps what I enjoyed the most, however, was the candid and sincere manner in which Scott Calhoun shares the excitement and beauty, as well as the disagreements and discoouragement one encounters when a dream is pursued with passion.

Not very well known songs.......2004-12-23
I will first say that i am partly at fault for this unsuccessful purchase. I bought this book blindly because wasn't able to see the table of contents to view the song list. Nor did Amazon.com list the songs available in this book. I figured that with "120 best known Christmas songs", how could any of the common popular songs be left out. Well, if you're looking for Frosty the Snowman, Silver Bells, The Little Drummer Boy, Here Comes Santa Claus, Jingle Bell Rock, Sleigh Ride, The Christmas Song (chestnuts roasting..), and some other REALLY well-known songs, DON'T LOOK HERE CUZ THEY AINT HERE. But songs like, "The Boar's head Carol", "The Friendly Beasts", "Pat-a-Pan", "Wassail Wassail", and "Bring a torch Jeannette, Isabella" are all here if you want them. I would not list these songs and more VERY obscure songs as "best known" at all. So be warned.

This is a excellent book to help your dating skills in "The Sims Hot-Date". It provides very useful information about how to act downtown, what to do, how to act on a date, what to say, and basically anything you need to know inorder to succeed.
It contains a section about the Hot-Date EP as well as an Introduction to the Sims. Some people might find the intro a little repetitive but again, it also gives very helpful tips on how to succeed in the regular house as well.
Overall it is a great book for reference for the game. You won't be disappointed. Pick it up, and if you do, youll be dating and marrying the whole town!
Hot Date strategy guide review.......2002-12-21
I found the list explaining the new characters and new social interactions very useful. The object list is very basic (original Sims and Hot Date objects only), and you can find things like the cheats on fan sites easily. However, it was also useful in keeping track of which objects were original Maxis objects since I have collected so many fan site objects now! I was, however, somewhat disappointed that no living large objects or house party objects were mentioned in this guide. Then again, it is possible to own hot date without ever having owned living large, SIMS DELUXE, or house party. (Not as much fun though, and if you purchase these expansion packs later, chances are you will have to reinstall your game (be sure to back up your neighborhoods and downloaded custom objects, skins, walls, floors etc. first BEFORE reinstalling). So I recommend to get the prior expansion packs first to avoid the hassle of reinstalling.)

The Credit Repair Kit For Dummies offers an in-depth, comprehensive, and enjoyable read chock-full of useful information. Given that last year more women filed for bankruptcy than graduated from college, and more children saw their parents file for bankruptcy than divorce, this book should be required reading in every high school in America. In fact, I think our elected "Dummies" in D.C. desperately need to learn and apply Mr. Bucci's principles in their management of America's finances.

This book helped me get back to the basics of managing my credit - because unbeknownst to and forgotten by many, credit indeed needs to be managed! Also the chapter on budgeting was very useful. Stephen Bucci uses wit and simple everyday language to make the book not only easy to understand and follow, but also engaging. A good purchase for those who need a refresher or reference for real life credit related problems!
