Rolling Stone: The Illustrated Portraits
ASIN: 1580930727
Release Date: 2000-10-19 |
Book Description
Robert Risko's celebrity caricatures are instantly recognizable - recognizable both as unmistakable likenesses of famous subjects and as examples of Risko's bold and fluid style. Since 1978 when Andy Warhol gave him his first assignment for Interview magazine, Risko has drawn portraits of hundreds of notables from the worlds of film and television, rock and jazz music, politics, and literature. In addition to countless images for Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, and other major magazines, Risko has illustrated book jackets, video covers, movie posters, and CD packages.
The Risko Book is the first collection of his work. Included among the 180 striking images are political power couples Bill and Hillary Clinton, George and Barbara Bush, and Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles; writers Jacqueline Susann, Truman Capote, and Stephen King, rock stars Elvis Presley, David Bowie, Madonna, and Prince; television fixtures David Letterman, Jerry Seinfeld, and Calista Flockhart; movie stars Jack Nicholson, Marilyn Monroe, Sean Connery, Jodie Foster, and Julia Roberts; sports figures Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, and Joe DiMaggio; fashion models and designers Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, Karl Lagerfeld, and Giorgio Armani; and moguls Bill Gates, S. I. Newhouse, and Martha Stewart. Not only a showcase for Risko's high-style caricatures, The Risko Book is a fascinating portrait of the newsmakers, both famous and infamous, of the last two decades of the 20th century.
Customer Reviews:
Hirschfeld's Heir Apparent.......2003-11-16
I thought I'd reviewed this years ago, but maybe it was elsewhere. I love this book. I've been a fan of the late Al Hirschfeld for years, but here's a relatively new artist from New York who captures a little of that style but yet has his own. Well, the cover says it all! If you can look at the cover and not laugh, well, you're dead. The back cover will blow away any Diana Ross fan, as well. His caricature style is such that if you follow pop culture at all, you don't need to look at the index to see whom is who. Well, for me there were a couple that were unfamiliar. I thought he missed the mark with Michael Jordan, but nobody's perfect! The book is divided into TV, Style, Music, Thinkers, Film, Scandals, Media, Sports, Theater, and Politics. Nobody seems to be off limits with Risko. His artwork is just beautifully done on a technical level, and still there's humor in a lot of it. There's one piece in particular of singer Al Jarreau that's stunning--it's part Hirschfeld and part Picasso! It's hard to explain, really. If you've never seen a Risko, you just have to experience it for yourself. Buy this book! I can't say enough about this artist, and I can't wait for Volume Two!
Risko's Finest.......2000-12-16
Found this book to be an amazing collection of illustrations by one of the most talented artists in our time. His work has matured over the years to a fine point of perfection.
Raves For Risko.......2000-11-01
Outstanding collection of extremely witty and winsome caricatures of entertainment and political figures from the 1970's through today. Most of the work previously graced the covers and feature articles of The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Interview, and Rolling Stone and therefore will be familiar to the reader.
There is much excellent cultural and political commentary (in illustration form) collected in this one book by an outstanding illustrator of the 20th century.
Great for Christmas giving, the book is beautifully printed and guaranteed to bring miles of smiles to the reader.

Great Book!.......2007-01-15
I wouldn't say learning Finnish is hard, but it requires a lot of memorization. This book helps you not only learn Finnish, but gives you a wide range of commonly used phrases in Finnish. Don't expect however to just breeze through the book and know your basic Finnish, be prepared to spend a lot of time on each chapter, and go back every now and again.
Learning Finn can be fun.......2004-11-13
Dr. Risko has written an outstanding introductory Finnish book that helps make studying and learning a very difficult language both rewarding and fun. The book is composed of a variety of lessons that involve common everyday interactions one would have when visiting Finland. The author's style is easy to follow and it's quite obvious she enjoys teaching languages. I highly recommend this book to anyone who may need to learn Finn or just has a curiosity about the Finnish language. This is the book to read and study if you are planning a trip to Suomi.

Cloth accesses an astonishingly broad range of human experiences. The raw material from which things are made, it has multiple associations: sensual, somatic, decorative, functional, and ritual. Yet although textiles are part of our everyday lives, their very familiarity and accessibility belie a complex set of histories and meanings. This is the first journal to look at the cultural meanings of textiles, with articles drawn from a wide range of disciplines. Heavily illustrated in full color, and featuring book and exhibition reviews, it brings together research in an innovative and distinctive forum, and will be essential reading for all those interested in textiles, material culture, and design.

Book Description
It's difficult to say what The Iron Tonic is about, although it is "known the skating pond conceals a family of enormous eels," and that "the light is fading from the day. The rest is darkness and dismay." Finally, though, The Iron Tonic could be seen as Edward Gorey's version of a winter afternoon in one of the great Russian novels of the nineteenth century.
Customer Reviews:
one of my favorite Edward Gorey works.......2006-11-29
THE IRON TONIC is a bleak little story as the cover proclaims, but bracingly bleak? Perhaps if you're in a certain sort of mood, I don't know. But it does perfectly capture a chilly winter atmosphere.
What I love are the circles in each illustration that draw your attention to some random item in the picture or to something relating to what you're seeing. There's no strict story here but it's possible to imagine some sort of bigger picture to the ominous and vague situations.
There's one bit where a person in a fur coat is standing near a winding stream with rays of sunshine breaking through bits of the grey sky, and the insert zooms in on a big ghostly hand in a sunbeam pointing to a spot in the stream with the accompanying text, "A fugitive and lurid gleam/Obliquely gild the gliding stream." Rich in symbolism? Nah, probably just nonsense. But that's fine by me.
Good, but not the best of Gorey.......2005-10-25
THE IRON TONIC, originally published in limited edition by Albondocani Press in 1969, comes here in a more widely accessible reprint. It is one of his brief stories where each page shows a droll pen-and-ink drawing with the briefest of text. Here, the tale (well, there's very little plot) is set in at a grey hotel and snowy environs in Lonely Valley, home to various aged and "unwell" people. Along with each illustration is a couplet, e.g. "It's known the skating pond conceals / A family of enormous eels." Most of the book is made up of the wanderings of a handful of characters and what they see in this strange wintry landscape, where objects fall from the air and a dead orphan lies beside the path.
Somehow I didn't find this as satisfying as some other Gorey efforts. If you've never read any of Gorey's work, you can't go wrong in starting off with THE OTHER STATUE. Save this one until you are a bit more acquainted with his art.
Goreyrific!.......2004-01-24
Sometimes I'll stop and look at an Edward Gorey construction (like "The Iron Tonic") and wonder to myself, "How exactly was this book received in 1969"? Gorey spent years and years perfecting his craft to the best of his abilities. In "The Iron Tonic", hard core Gorey fans will not be disappointed. Those unfamiliar with Mr. Gorey's books may find this one a poor first showing. Advertised on its cover as a, "Bracingly Bleak Tale", it is nonetheless amusing in its dourness. Using his old reliable pen-and-ink, Gorey follows the trials of those attendees at a gothic grey hotel in the middle of an icy wilderness. In the backgrounds of many pictures, the observant reader will notice numerous tiny figures dashing around in the background. Objects fall from the sky regularly, and it is not particularly alarming (or unnatural) to find the occasional dead orphan at the side of the road. I can't say for certain that this book wouldn't be appreciated by some children. Undoubtedly there are those out there eager to scarf up anything this well illustrated. But the large majority of kids will find "The Iron Tonic", unsatisfying, and that is as it should be. If the large population of kiddie-dom was made up of Goreyphiles we'd be living in an eerie wonderful world. That day may be coming, but it is not here yet.
Bracingly bleak!.......2003-01-19
In typical Gorey fashion, this book makes no sense. Unlike some of his works, which have plots that go nowhere, The Iron Tonic makes no pretense at story. It's simply a collection of couplets, with Gorey's usual detailed and quirky illustrations, in a bleak and wintry setting. And there is no iron tonic in the book whatsoever, which Gorey fans had doubtless already guessed.
It's an excellent example of Gorey's work, as long as one goes in knowing what to expect from this author.
lame..........2002-12-08
i love dark humor. i am a big fan of angus oblong and joyce carol oates, but i have to say that i hated this book. there was nothing special about it at all. it was not funny, it was not thought-provoking, it was not even the least bit creepy. if i could have i would have given this book a zero rating. this goes for the many other books i have read by edward gorey.

Emphasis is placed on managing your money and playing intelligently.
Customer Reviews:
Good, sound advice........2007-05-16
This is the first book I have read on casino gambling. I am a novice gambler and I found John Patrick's advice to be solid and sound. He wants you to make smart decisions and not expect miracles. There are no gimmicks, no empty promises. He has little tolerance for a loser mentality and is uncompromising on what he thinks is the right or wrong way to go. I will continue to go back to the book as I play more and more because there are many different strategies and I can only absorb and put into practice so much information at once.
I just got back from Vegas and I cannot report that I came home with more money than I left with, but I did go there with some parameters to begin playing with and enough confidence to step up to the craps table. Hopefully the dice will be hotter during my next outing.
An amazing book!.......2001-03-09
This book is terrific. Through using the approaches described in it, I have had a great deal of fun playing craps in casinos around the world, and have managed not to lose my shirt in the process (an amazing feat given how much I have played and the fact that the house always has the advantage of the "vig"). I highly recommend this book to craps players of any experience level.
Caution: read this before entering a casino!.......2000-08-30
This is an absolute must for anyone who wants to step foot in a casino. I can't say enough good things about this book. John Patrick lays out a road map for minimizing losses and maximizing your chances to WIN. If you follow his rules, you will become a winner.
Customer Reviews:
Dishonest Conman making money on books not gambling........2006-03-20
At the very premiere location on John Patrick's website is this testimonial....
=======================
"Last night I walked away from the casino having turned a $1000.00 bankroll into $8381.00. I'm glad I learned about the WIN GOALS and LOSS LIMITS or I would have blown my $1000 on a few games and tables. Tomorrow, I will do it all over again. I don't ALWAYS turn such a huge profit but I always turn SOME PROFIT each day of gambling under your system. I have even applied your system further than you mention. I am lucky enough to live in a location with a big choice of casinos. If a CASINO is cold for me, I've learned to apply the DISCIPLINE enough to leave that casino and enter another. I've expanded your suggestions beyond just switching TABLES.
I now sometimes think about how the casinos can take such big loses daily from me and I realize that the players who aren't using your system are the ones who are supplying the casinos with the money for my wins. I suggest every player get your books, tapes and NOW DVDs! The only worry I have is that if too many people know your strategies of gambling success, the casinos would soon go out of business because of all the people taking payouts instead of paying loses.
I used to think that your books, tapes, and NOW DVDS were expensive. I now wonder, what was I thinking? I challenge anyone to find an investment that pays off even 1 percent of what the JOHN PATRICK SYSTEM did for me!"
Mick Schofield
==========================
It is total BS. I know for a fact. I wrote it.
I was at his message board and a lot of people were posting negative things about JP which were all being deleted seconds later, including my own.
I then decided to write the outrageous nonsense you see above. Not only was it not deleted, it was elevated to the absolute most premiere area of the site.
I have confronted JP on this many times about him knowingly posting a false story. He knows the testimonial is bologna but he refuses to take it down.
From what I've seen of his products, his central advice is to change tables when you are on a losing streak, the DISCIPLINE he keeps harping on.
His self testimonial "I may not win much but I don't lose much either". This is the most positive thing I have ever heard him say in reference to his own track record.
Not really much of an endorsement if you ask me.
Seriously, I would bet with no fear of losing, that JP's record is of a slow gradual losing of money. Sometimes up for a while, usually down. The overall situation a constant descent.
I don't know how he got so well known to be able to write and sell his useless products but that is his true winfall.
Scratching my head..........2005-06-19
...I'm somewhat at a loss as to why John Patrick's books are so popular. To be perfectly honest, I've purchased many of his books, including this one, his book on Advanced Craps, his book on Roulette, just to name a few.
All of his books are basically the same - he presents the reader with the admonishment that discipline is the key to consistent winnings in the casinos. And then he lays out various money management strategies which are really just betting strategies based on progressing pressing one's bets as one is winning.
The problem is...well, with the exception of Blackjack, all of the games for which he writes books have a negative expectation for the player. In layman's terms, no betting strategy will result in a long term win - the only thing these betting strategies will do is alter one's bankroll fluctuations.
To be fair, I found his Craps book to be entertaining and I have used one of his strategies (which can basically be summed up as play the pass line, take the odds, place the 6/8) but I did so not because of any expectation of winning in the long run, but for entertainment (Craps is, admittedly, one of the most entertaining games in the casinos).
I'm somewhat at a loss as to why John Patrick's books seem to sell so well. They all really just present the same "information" (his admonishment for players to be disciplined and his betting strategies) for games in which players really have no chance of netting a long term win. To make matters worse, his Blackjack book contains errors in its basic strategy tables. Speaking of Blackjack, there is a wealth of good information out there on this game by authors such as Arnold Snyder and others which present good, solid counting strategies which can yield a player a long term expectation. There is also a winning method for roulette published by Laurence Scott. However, all these methods require the player to actually put forth some sort of real effort (Laurence Scott's method alone made me want to puke when I thought of the effort required to put it into practice) rather than relying on a mindless betting progression. I guess there's a message in there somewhere.
DO NOT PLAY CRAPS UNTIL YOU'VE READ THIS BOOK!.......2004-09-04
John Patrick forgot more about the game of craps than most of us know. This book will make you a stronger player no matter what your level may be. His advice is invaluable to all gamblers but especially to the non-professional craps player. Even if you've been playing the game for fifty years, you will benefit from the no nonsense common sense observations here. This book will more than pay for itself immediately on your next visit to a casino. It takes you from a kindergarten to a Ph.D. level. The novice can become an excellent player from this one book. Buy it. You'll be sorry if you don't.
The Patrick System is first-rate.......2004-02-28
None of the previous reviewers have mentioned the most important thing about this book: the Patrick System. This method of playing craps, which he explains about two thirds of the way through the book (and which begins with the brilliant move of betting both the "Pass Line" AND "Don't Pass" at the same time!!) gives the bettor the lowest vig (best odds) against the house of any system I know...
A waste of time.......2002-07-22
John Patrick's gambling strategy espouses a risk averse philosophy that does little to help the player in the long run. For example, he advocates placing the any craps bet to hedge the pass line wager. Any "gambling expert" can tell you that hedging does not work. Furthermore, the house edge on the any craps bet is over 11%!
Another problem with his book is the "big four". First of all, money management "systems" have no effect on the long term winnings of the player. No matter what "system" the player uses, his/her winnings will fall on a curve dictated by the expectation of the game being played. According to Patrick, however, they are a cardinal rule to gambling success. Lastly, trends can only be seen in hindsight. If you are interested in learning craps, buy another book.
Book Description
Advanced Craps is just what it sounds like. this book is my favorite because of the power of the Money Management and discipline Theories. there are 131 chapters alone on Money Management. It takes the time honored idea of playing craps and offers a comprehensive and logical way of utilizing the Place Bets as a more potentially profitable way to play craps. this book has everything a player need to compete at the tables and a wide variety of off shooots to each suggested method of play. In short.....it is a MUST read.
Customer Reviews:

So You Wanna Be A Gambler: Advanced Craps.......2001-11-02
This book has many, many strategies to play craps, a down to earth book for people who are not greedy,he shows mostly conservative way to play.
Hands down the best book on craps!.......2001-03-13
This is by far the best book ever written on craps. Patrick's style of writing is easy to read and very often entertaining. He gives detailed examples of different systems to use at the table. He not only describes the proper moves to make but also explains the reasoning behind each bet. Patrick briefly talks about the different bets available to a craps players and then jumps right into an analysis of the game. His style involves careful money management and a powerful regression move. By reducing your bet after a win, you lock up a profit and guarantee yourself a winner. Using Patrick's techniques for both right and wrong betting, you'll become a better player. Will you win all the time? Of course not, no system can guarantee you a winner everytime. But at those times when you do lose, Patrick's money management helps you keep the losses down. If you're looking for the big score, this book isn't for you. Advanced Craps is for the conservative player, looking to grind out small consistent wins. If you wanna win more money, bet more! Patrick's book has tought me the three most important words in craps -- Take Me Down. I highly recommend this book.
The best book about craps, ever!.......2000-12-22
This terrific book is really 600 pages of good, solid advice - everything you always wanted to know about craps! You'll learn over 50 different super systems and John Patrick REALLY drills them into you in his "unique" style (he kind of yells at you a little). But at least you'll remember stuff like I did. Don't be put off by his style - he does it for a reason - he's really trying to help. READ THIS BOOK it may take a while but it's the best book you'll ever read on the game of craps!
The BEST book of 6 that I've read on craps.......2000-10-04
I bought 6 books to better improve my craps game. This was the best book purchased. It's around 500 pages, and offers the most insight into all aspects of playing craps. This is an Advanced book though and if you're new to craps, get a more basic book to start. Be warned that Patrick uses sarcastic anecdotes, but the wit is meant to drive home his key points. Also recommended, "Craps: The Real Deal" by Vogel and Edell's "How to Make Your Living Playing Craps."

Customer Reviews:
Option Selling.......2007-09-15
This is a very good and very practical book. Although it is focus on option trading for future market, but it is certainly very helpful if you only trading option for stocks. I wish I have read this book a lot earlier.
It is not a book trying to be the "bible" of the option, and it is not for people just want to day trading. It is book for people like to bring in income confidently, month after month.
Everyone likes to have higher probability to profit in each trade should read this book.
A different way to look at options trading........2007-07-04
I have read this book three times and have even used the authors firm for some of my investments. The book focuses on one topic that many option traders overlook - the potential for profit versus the probability of profit. Many option traders like to buy options because of the limited loss combined with the unlimited potential gain. What they overlook is the probability of attaining that profit. By turning things around and becoming an option seller you increase your chance of winning (since a majority of options expire worthless) at the trade-off of limited profit and potentially unlimited loss. They try to mitigate this risk by selling very far out-of-the-money options which have a minuscule chance of being exercised. With futures, you can sell contracts 50 - 100% above the current prices and still receive good premium. Also, as they mention, you can limit the risk by offsetting your naked option by purchasing a further out of the money option and creating a spread. Not only does this limit your risk, it lowers your margin requirements in your options account.
It is true that the authors focus mainly on naked option selling since this is how they invest most of their managed accounts. However, they are assuming that you will use a broker who will have the ability to watch your account and manage that risk for you. For a self-directed investor, other risk management techniques would be needed. I recommend "Options on Futures" by John Summa and Jonathan Lubow or "Trading Optures and Futions" by Joe Ross for a more complete discussion of option trading with an emphasis on risk management
Great for Beginners .......2007-06-07
I trade stocks currently and have traded options & futures previously. This book does not address the stock market but does present an approach for investing in futures options that differs significantly from what I previously encountered in the futures market. I can see that my options and futures trading would have been much more satisfying and profitable had I used the principles in this book. I remain a neophyte in the futures market but will again enter with my eyes wider open this time, and I will probably employ some of the ideas stated within this book.

If you are interested in option selling strategies, this is a very helpful read.
The authors advocate selling far out naked options. Far out means far out of the money and far out in time (3-4 months). The argument is that one standard deviations 30 days out is more likely to be hit than one standard deviation 90 days out even though, statistically speaking, the odds are the same. While I believe this is true, it is not very practical for stocks because the 3-4 month time horizon will usually include an earnings date. This is probably an unacceptable risk on naked options where your exposure is great. On commodity contracts your risk is lock limit days.
If one were to hold a far out naked short option until expiration, it is a high probability play. However, the authors suggest a loss limiting strategy that would get you out far before the short strike is hit. This severly decreases the high probability advantage.
The authors stress knowing the fundamentals is important. Your short position is taken in favor of the fundamentals and the strike is far enough out to survive the noise of the markets. Fundamentals do play a large role in commodities.
All in all, this book presents a reasonable strategy and a good honest discussion of the process. However, taking the stop loss approach into account, the risk:reward ratio of the approach is too much for my taste. I will stick to the more "complicated" lower risk trades selling options on stocks.
This book was not a waste of time or money and should be a part of your option selling education.
No one should be fooled by the book title.......2007-01-11
The book is not even close to what the title claims to be. The book is just for beginers, not for those who want solid knowledges for real battles. One thing that I can agree with the author is that options are the products designed for sellers, not for buyers, meaning that we as minors in the market should also consider selling. There were some remarks that were helpful in clarifying what I knew about options, but they were not worth the money I paid at all.
