Book Description
Created by the Buenos Aires-born artist and mountaineer Helmut Ditsch, these hyper-realistic paintings of mountains and mountain scenes add new meaning to the phrase "a breathtaking work of art."
Executed with incredible precision, Ditsch's paintings convey the dizzying heights and serene grandeur of the mountains he has himself climbed. But they are more than photograph-like depictions of alpine scenery in Europe, North and South America. These paintings draw their energy from Ditsch's ability to infuse his work with his love for mountaineering and his own experience of the summits. "When climbing a mountain and painting," he says in a conversation with his friend the famed mountaineer Reinhold Messner, "I feel as if I'm in the same situation. Without any real concern for my own safety I submit myself to nature
In my art I also try to
perform a similar feat of strength, test the frontiers of possibility." This trilingual edition features one hundred color illustrations as well as two fold-out reproductions.

Casual days are more than confusing for Dilbert and office workers in the '90s. "Studies have shown that Fridays are the only safe day to dress casually," Dogbert declares. "Any other day would cause a stock plunge." Casual Day Has Gone Too Far captures the issues that confront cubicle dwellers everywhere and is sure to continue the Dilbert-mania of worker bees and managers alike.
Customer Reviews:
Typical Dilbert.......2004-09-17
If you like Dilbert, you'll like the book. Beyond that, I don't know what else to say...
A classic Dilbert book!.......2004-09-08
This is a classic Dilbert book - it is hilarious and very funny.
It will always be on my bookshelf to grab whenever I need it - this is a definite 'must-have' for anyone who works in a cubicle-type of job, or who does work in general for that matter. I am a student and Dilbert has always appealed to me - and this book is no exception!
Twice as true and half as funny..........2003-07-23
When I worked at my old college, our dean decided one day that the modern corporate culture idea of having a casual Friday would be a good innovation. A few months later, he looked about in consternation, and remarked that he thought casual day had gone too far (I have my own opinions on this, considering most people had not in fact become very casual at all, and charity requires me to refrain from commenting upon what I think was really at issue). Shortly after this exchange, one of my book clubs offered 'Casual Day Has Gone Too Far', a collection of Dilbert cartoons, which had become the object of break-room bulletin boards and interoffice memo attachments around the country.
The book has a brief introduction (Scott Adams recounts in it that he felt cheated once upon buying a buying guide which had no introduction, hence, he felt required to include one), which includes email instructions for subscribing to the online Dilbert newsletter, which is published 'whenever I feel like it', according to Adams.
Then, of course, we jump immediately into 'the good stuff', the columns.
The sociology, psychology, and even the sex appeal of Dilbert -- all of these have been variously explained and lauded or decried in other places, so I shall not go into detail here, save to say that there is something very true about the representations found in this small column that resonates with anyone in any way familiar with corporate America. Of one political satire in Britain, a columnist once commented that with regard to its reflection of reality, that 'reality is twice as true but half as funny' -- this dictum can likewise be applied to Dilbert.
The first column starts out with Dogbert explaining leadership.
(Fair warning -- how does one adequately describe a cartoon column in words, without pictures? Forgive me if this analysis becomes something less than the actual columns.)
Dogbert explains that leaders start their careers as morons, drawn to meetings like moths to porchlights, with a high bladder-to-brain ratio (which makes enduring meetings easier on both counts), and they succeed because, being untempted by logic or coffee, they continue along the path of promotion until the reach their true skill level (often, that of recognising others, underlings all, with true ability) -- and Dogbert's conclusion is that leadership is the way of removing morons from the productive flow.
Adams' wit is scathing, unmerciful, and has no 'sacred cows'. He parodies all levels of the production chain, from the lowest to the highest, often showing the inverse relation of skill to responsibility, authority to intelligence, productivity to reward. He demonstrates the imperviousness of all levels of the corporation to logic. He likes to invent corporate-based 'lingo' which, if it appeared in an actual memo (and some of this actually does appear in the real world) it would most likely be taken seriously.
With regard to casual days, this has been seen as the evil plot of HR Director Catbert. Alice determines that 'it's just another sadistic human resources plot to make people quit.' Others decided that they loved casual Friday, because 'it combines unattractive with unprofessional while diminishing neither.'
Finally, Dilbert shows the golden road to visibility in the large anonymous corporate structure.
Dilbert: I significantly increased my visibility at work today, Dogbert. Yesterday I was invisible to my management. But today I am known by all.
Dogbert: You screwed up, huh?
Dilbert: Ooh yeah. Big time.
And so it goes. Perhaps it is not only casual day that has gone too far.
Marvelous Catbert Intro.......2001-09-19
In this book, Catbert makes his first appearance as HR director of Dilbert's company. His casual day policy is insane, and so, casual day will always be a strange day. Dilbert knows the feeling of going to work on a casual day, and wondering "Has it gone too far?" Besides the histerical Catbert jokes, there's jokes on company takeovers, futile projects, team building excersises, and much more! So join corporate America's truly relatable office crew in these insane misadventures of white collar workplace life.
Another Dilbert classic!.......1998-03-23
Another great book in the Dilbert lineup. Although I had already seen all of the cartoons, either in my calendar or the paper, they make me laugh everytime I read them! I think Scott Adams is a spy at my company and everyone else's!!

The Legion's Golden Age Begins.......2003-10-09
Although the Legion of Super-Heroes had several years of continuty at this point (enough for five "Archives" volumes, in fact) and many, many years lying ahead of it, this is where the real golden age for these characters began. Jim Shooter, still the whiz-kid writer he was before he became a legendary editor, led the Legion down paths of intelligence and daring that were only beginning to be touched on over at Marvel Comics at the time (the early 1960s). This volume introduces the Fatal Five, villains that still plague the Legion to this day, and featured the death of a Legionnaire that became truly iconic. This was the first time I had read these stories, and while I knew the story of the Legionnaire and how he died (it's referenced so often in the years afterwards) I never realized how briefly, relatively speaking, he was a member of the Legion before his death. It's startling that a character who was around for such a short period of time became such a martyr among the Legionnaires. And it's a remarkable story. Halfway through the Legion Archives (so far -- there are 12 volumes in print as of this writing), this is by far the best of the series yet.
Their Most Important Stories Of All!.......1999-10-11
The Legion's most pivotal stories laying the groundwork for continuity of the next three decades. With this volume, you get the Fatal Five, Sun Eater, and Adult Legion stories. Great Jim Shooter writing and beautiful Curt Swan artwork, the definitive Legion of Super-Heroes. If you have to get just one volume out of the series, this is the one.
Book Description
The Western is the most important genre in American cinema. Though the production of films may have declined since the 1960s, the Western's influence has spread worldwide, and far beyond the movies. Recently the New Western History, attempting to put the record straight where women, ethnic minorities and other marginalised groups are concerned, has given new impetus to film-makers, while best-selling writers such as Larry McMurtry and Cormac McCarthy have found new stories to tell.
This collection of new essays pays particular attention to areas of the Western hitherto neglected, such as the early silent Western, the singing cowboys of the 1930s and the television Westerns of the 1950s. It examines the perennially urgent topic of Native Americans and looks beyond America to examine the European Western and to consider the significance of Mexico. It also looks at the role of Westerns in magazine advertising and in fashion, and the spate of television documentaries on Western topics.
Specially commissioned for this volume, all the articles throw fresh light on a genre still not accorded its due by the critical establishment.
Customer Reviews:
Off the Beaten Trail.......2006-11-18
Edward Buscombe is one of the best scholars writing about Westerns today, and he adds to his reputation by putting together this anthology of scholarly articles that explore topics general histories of the Western genre tend to ignore.
There is a marvellous essay on Douglas Fairbanks (Sr.) as a Western star in his pre-swashbuckler career. Also I was fascinated by the piece on Gene Autry and why the singing cowboy craze began when it did. The essay on the extraordinary popularity of TV Westerns in the late Fifties showed why this was due to the economic factors facing the TV networks then.
In short, the pieces collected here avoid the tried and true topics that have been talked to death elsewhere. For the most part, they are void of academic jargon and can be read with enjoyment by the general reader with an interest in the Western genre.
Book Description
No composer contributed more to film than Bernard Herrmann, who in over 40 scores enriched the work of such directors as Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, François Truffaut, and Martin Scorsese. In this first major biography of the composer, Steven C. Smith explores the interrelationships between Herrmann's music and his turbulent personal life, using much previously unpublished information to illustrate Herrmann's often outrageous behavior, his working methods, and why his music has had such lasting impact.
From his first film (Citizen Kane) to his last (Taxi Driver), Herrmann was a master of evoking psychological nuance and dramatic tension through music, often using unheard-of instrumental combinations to suit the dramatic needs of a film. His scores are among the most distinguished ever written, ranging from the fantastic (Fahrenheit 451, The Day the Earth Stood Still) to the romantic (Obsession, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir) to the terrifying (Psycho).
Film was not the only medium in which Herrmann made a powerful mark. His radio broadcasts included Orson Welles's Mercury Theatre on the Air and The War of the Worlds. His concert music was commissioned and performed by the New York Philharmonic, and he was chief conductor of the CBS Symphony.
Almost as celebrated as these achievements are the enduring legends of Herrmann's combativeness and volatility. Smith separates myth from fact and draws upon heretofore unpublished material to illuminate Herrmann's life and influence. Herrmann remains as complex as any character in the films he scored--a creative genius, an indefatigable musicologist, an explosive bully, a generous and compassionate man who desperately sought friendship and love.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent survey of the great film composer.......2007-03-16
Bernard Herrmann is undoubtedly a genius, but he was also a tortured man. His ability to churn out scores under pressure for radio and then film is simply astonishing. He also found the time to orchestrate his scores, which was not common at the time.
His films scores added immeasurably to the the films they served - Vertigo, Psycho, The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Ghost and Mrs Muir, Taxi Driver, Citizen Kane, North by Northwest, The Magnificant Ambersons to name but a few. But despite this success he craved recognition as a "serious" composer and conductor. This book does him justice and it is hard to manage a better biography of the great man.
Could be much better.......2006-06-05
I realize this is probably the best (if not only) comprehensive bio on Herrmann, but I found the book a bit clumsy and disjointed. Whenever a particular piece of music or film score is reached, there is a sudden jump into in-depth musical analysis. I would have preferred to have read about his life and career first, and then read a separate book that explores the music itself. I didn't want to take the time to run out and buy a CD or DVD everytime an unfamiliar work or film is detailed, so I found myself skipping over the discussions of instrumentation, thematic material, etc. Perhaps later I will refer back to them for later study. The appendix listing his works for film, radio, television, and concert is a nice addition.
The biographical material is fine, with a point of noting all of the musicians, conductors, actors, etc. that Herrmann either knew, worked with, and more often, hated and criticized. The infamous break with Hitchcock was very well written, and is a fascinating story within itself on the clash of ego and power. The portrait of the composer is one of an incredible talent with superior knowledge of his art, but with a difficult personality that resulted in harm to his own life and career.
The text makes extensive use of long quotations and letters, which are in a slightly smaller font, but otherwise identical to the main text. I found this to be confusing at time, as most books that I have read will print these sections either indented or offset. It was probably the fault of the publisher, as this would have added quite a few more pages to the book.
I recommend this book to anyone that is interested in learning about film music, or just want to read about one of the most talented and amazing musicians of the twentieth century.
The go-to Herrmann bio, but it needed better editing.......2006-04-14
Though a major biography, the 1991 book has problems. There are mis-spellings ("Macken" is actually "Machen"), factual errors ("Riders to the Sea" is a one-act play, not a novel), and typos (e.g., "Herrmann like the film" should've been "Herrmann liked the film"). The prose is occasionally clumsy. There are inconsistencies. At one point we learn that Herrmann didn't drink, and later we find that he is drinking.
It is a challenge to tell when long quotes occur, since their typography is so close to the "normal" text. There is such a great proportion of quotes, there is at times a scrapbook feel. The running title at the top of a page does not indicate what chapter you are in, and each chapter heading should have indicated years of coverage in addition to its number. Most of what I am describing are editing problems, whose blame must be laid on the University of California Press. I hope the 2002 edition is better.
As a person, Bernard Herrmann was obnoxious, bullying, insulting, and disregarded the feelings of others. If this applied only to his music vocation, these qualities would be somewhat understandable, but he was liable to gratuitously lash out at whoever crossed his path, whether taxi drivers or party guests.
Nonetheless, his music is a thing for love, enthusiasm, and admiration.
Bernard Herrmann lives on!.......2005-04-07
One of filmdom's most innovative and influential composers was the late Bernard Herrmann. Remembered mostly for the six films that he scored for director Alfred Hitchcock, the composer had successes with other filmmakers, along with a long tenure as lead conductor of the CBS Orchestra on radio. During his time at CBS, he wrote many compositions for the medium, and finished an opera based on Emily Bronte's "Wuthering Heights".
Author Smith has compiled a fascinating look at Herrmann, exposing the man's genius that went hand-and-hand with his tempetuosity. The book also reveals how Herrmann suited his music for the characters that were to be seen onscreen, crafting each note to the storyline and the director's wishes.
"A Heart at Fire's Center" is a must-read for those that admire the man, as well as for those that have an interest in the nuances and mandates of scoring for the movies.
Fine reference book.......2004-07-26
Good book detailing the life and music of the finest of all film composers.
Fine insights to how the composer crafts his scores and how they
enhance the film. Herrmann was the master indeed. The NPR documentary "Bernard Herrmann: A Celebration of his Life and Music" that runs over 2 1/2 hours is a good companion piece to go with this book. Interestingly the book makes no mention of the Radio documentary, which has had much greater exposure than this book or the truncated video documentary.

Grandmaster James Plaskett, a player with renowned tactical ability, has carefully assembled an abundance of tactical chess puzzles to test players of all levels.
Customer Reviews:
Want to be stronger at Chess tactics & Combinations.......2005-12-15
I bought this book specifically to improve my middle-game play.
I wanted to improve my tactical vision and better calculate tactics. My rating is USCF 2180.
This book is excellent because
1) there aren't any long unncessary write-ups like , "Here I played White ,etc, etc". Pure mental training
2) Exercizes are gradual : simple at first, then not so simple and then really hard to see it all
3) you can progress throught the book, divided in 12 chapters. see how you rate on chapter 1 ( scoring system provided ), and on chapter 7, and compare.
Also, I like the fact that if there is a wrong move, or alternate variation, the author will explain why such move fails. Each exercize is reviewed by a strong GM with several variations detailed if needed.
I did find some isolated cases where I went to the computer to check additional defensive moves not covered , or typo in diagram/solution. This covers less than 10% of the examples though.
Finally, there are a lot of Plaskett own games which I didn't know about, or positions taken from interesting games played in opens. The selection is original but covers most tactical themes.
This is a book for someone who knows about themes ( forks, double attack, Pawn destruction, quiet moves ) but wants to get closer to International master level.
All in all, a book I recommend highly for anyone -with Elo/Rating > 1900- eager to improve in chess tactics.
Challenging positions, good annotations, poor scoring system.......2002-08-09
I have a mixed feelings about this book. Unfortunately, the negatives slightly outweigh positive. GM Plaskett put together a series of 12 tests, each with 15 diagrams. You get points based on accuracy and depth of your analysis. There is a "hint" feature which will cost you points.
Suggested readers level -
In my opinion players rated under 2000 should look for other books as majority of testing positions will be a frustrating experience. Don't get me wrong, even 1600 rated would benefit from working through author's answers to many "15 point" problems, however, the value of such a lesson is not that great.
Quality of Positions and Annotations -
VERY GOOD. Mainly, the positions were unfamiliar to me. Many from GM Plaskett's own games. Been a player or a witness, he has some additional angle to the annotations. This increases value of notes and also brings some fun.
Scoring system -
POOR - my biggest complain with this book - scoring is way too simplistic. In many cases I believe scores don't correspond to relative difficulties of positions. "Price" for hint is outrages, comparing to the actual help you get. For example for 15 point problem (T#3, P#15) - rook endgame - question ask how Black can use his pass pawn. Hint will cost you 6 points and you will find out that you should consider
"advancing the pawn at all costs". I would expect this to be initial thought of anyone who read the question and studied the problem. So hint doesn't bring anything new to the table, yet takes away 40% of maximum points. Finally, when you do finish the test, study the solutions and get your overall score, what are you suppose to do with it? There is no relative strength table or anything else that would help you to measure your result.
Accuracy of presentation -
AVERAGE - I have only been through one test so far, but already I saw a diagram (T#1, P#9) with a "ghost" knight. I also run into the position (T#1, P#11) that specifically claimed to have only one solution - mate in 5 and asked you to find it. However, even without PC help, I found another solution (in his solution -play 3.Rf7+ and 4.Be5# or 4.Bc7#)
Overall, good testing book for higher rated player 2000+. Especially, if he has several friends with similar ratings to compare results with. Lower rated players and beginners, consider something else, for example Emms' Ultimate Puzzle book or Hall's Combination Challenge.
Good luck,
Copyrighted by me!
An engaging book of chess puzzles.......2002-06-08
The latest in the "Everyman Chess Puzzles" series, Can You Be A Tactical Chess Genius? by chess expert James Plaskett is an engaging book of chess puzzles written to twist the minds and imaginations of even the most experienced chess wizards. Here is a compelling quiz book that stretches tactical ability to earn points and gain a final score to compare against that of family and friends. There is even an "ask a grandmaster" option, but using it will cost points! A most enjoyable book for avid chess buffs, Can You Be A Tactical Chess Genius? would make a wonderful addition to any chess enthusiast's collection.
Book Description
How do you top what is said to be the greatest selling fundraising book of all time?
How do you improve upon Mega Gifts, a book CASE Currents magazine called 'the most important fundraising book' written?
How do you, as Emeril Lagasse would say, 'kick it up a notch?"
Jerold Panas knows how.
You update the content, revise it, add more chapters, introduce a rash of new donors, and look afresh at what's happened over the past two decades. What you end up with is an even better book, if that's possible.
The Second Edition of Mega Gifts: Who Gives Them, Who Gets Them is no 'how-to' book. Panas would wince at that depiction. No, Mega Gifts it is far more substantive and significant than that.
What Panas is after is nothing less than exposing the soul of those who make large gifts. And in his own inimitable style, he goes right to the source, the big givers themselves, and speaks at length with dozens of them.
Then, to corroborate what he learns, Panas surveys nearly a thousand professionals in the field and incorporates their insights as well.
The result is a tour de force book from an unrivalled storyteller, with insights dancing off every page. In fact, there's so much inside information, you'll feel you're reading someone else's mail.
What you find in Mega Gifts is the real deal, from the primary source. This isn't conjecture.
And what you gain is an understanding of donors' innermost motivations, what drives them to the causes they support, how they reach their decision, what nurtures their loyalty, what they expect from organizations and their staff, how they wish to be recognized - even how they want you to approach them and present your case.
And then there are the Tenets for Success. From his depth interviews, from his survey to field professionals, and from his own close association with mega givers over the past several decades, Panas has distilled down 62 tenets that guide, shape, and determine the success of securing major gifts. Each and every one should be tacked on the wall.
Mega Gifts is the 800 pound gorilla in the field
and one hugely entertaining animal it is.
Customer Reviews:
Mega Gifts - Mega Helpful.......2005-09-03
This book was almost like listening to a professional and highly experienced fund raiser give his unvarnished perspective on the motivations and realities of raising Mega Gifts. A nice peak into the human nature of those fortunate enough to be in a position to make large gifts to worthy and perhaps not so worthy causes. I found the book to be very helpful being new to the field of fund raising, though experienced in dealing with powerful and wealthy people in other professional settings. Not a "How To" book in the strictest sense, but more a what is and what motivates type of book. Worth the read.
Well Researched and Well Written.......2000-06-29
This book was first published in 1984 and quickly became a classic. Panas calls up the experiences of well-known philanthropists, volunteers, educators, religious leaders, fund-raising experts, and others to underscore a primary principle of successful fundraising: technique is no substitute for a committed heart. Having said that, be sure to check out his 65 Tenets for Success.
