      Book Description

Relating to clothes is a fundamental experience in the lives of most Western women. Even when choice is fraught with ambivalence, clothing matters. From considerations about dressing for success, to worries about weight, through to investing particular articles of clothing with meaning bordering on the sacred, what we wear speaks volumes about personal identity - what is revealed, what is concealed, what is created. This book fills a gap in the existing literature on the ambivalence of fashion and dress by drawing on a wide range of women's experiences with their wardrobes and providing empirical data noticeably absent from other studies of women and dress. Navigating what is clearly a contested realm in feminist scholarship, contributors provide rich case studies of the reality of women's relationships with clothing. While on the surface concerns about fashion or dress may appear to reflect gendered patterns, in fact clothing may be used to challenge ascribed meanings about femininity.

Cosbyology Essays and Observations from the doctor of comedy
      By: Bill Cosby
The book talk about thing that were a good experience to him and of course when good thing happen to you then there will be bad thing that happen to bill in his life.. Bill was not my fist choice I wanted some one that was really famous I didn't find any thing. Till I went to my grammas house and I went to the library and found bill I think that he is one of the greatest comedy that still lives. Mr. Cosby is man that tries to look the other way when he has a bad day but when he need to he will go back and face the problem.

Bill like many people didn't like school and so he didn't like homework but there was a math teacher that loved to teach geometry. His name was Mr. Sapolsky he gave home work but bill didn't take a text book eventually he got really bad grade and one day he took a test in geometry class. He used twelve pages and got the answer right he still failed because of those to many pages. He went to another high school but there they taught trigonometry but a different teacher and one day that teacher was absent and Mr. Sapolsky. Bill realized that the teacher was not mean he just wanted to help him and bill was sorry that he thought of him bad.

Mr. Cosby liked to play football and he was good at it he played when he was in high school for his school. His granddad found out and told him that he shouldn't play football because his bone were bitter and he should what till he is 20 or some close to that. Bill didn't listen to him and he play a game in that game he crashed in to a person and fell at fist he was going to fall on his face but landed on his hand "The doctor said that I had a bruised muscle (pg.128)." Then I went home I couldn't move my right hand my granddad found out. He helped me heal it my parents didn't know I told my granddad I should of listen to him.

Can you believe that the doc of comedy almost quit show business and all because to one mistake. Well he started at this place called gas light which was across from Mr. Kelly's a really big time club. One day bill got a try there because his agent saw that they wanted bill to play there so when he went and people clapped when he was said to the crowed but not when he left. Bill was not funny he went to his room and then he said he didn't want to do the second act and he left. But the manger that got bill there said you better get bill to do the second act or I will sue him he said to the manger. Bill did it and then this time he got the crowed to chuckle he knows to never give up.

Bill probably learned that life is hard put if you make it hard on yourself it is a lot worse .He knows that he is funny and he shows it proud of it to he is smart to. He knows that not all people try to put to out make you feel bad some try to help you but there are not many. If you don't take a change that you will never get any where. If you don't try how would you know how that is and if it is hard or easy?

5 out of 5 stars The title says it all!.......2005-06-17

Dr. William Henry Cosby,Jr.,the Doctor of Comedy, tells many great stories that he could tell them live on stage also. Of course, there are some of his childhood memories, his Navy days and his days at Philadelphia's Temple University. This book is so small, and yet so big. Many of Cosby's fans who read COSBYOLOGY also read LOVE & MARRIAGE,TIME FLIES and FATHERHOOD.

      5 out of 5 stars A Charming Collection.......2004-12-05

The true measure of a talented comdian is often said to be the ability to be funny without foul language. Cosbyology is a series of short essays about observations of life and recollections of the past. While not necessarily as funny as some of his other work, it is a charming collection.

As usual Cosby has found stories the masses can identify with. As a failed skier, I enjoyed the chapter, "Why I Don't Like Melting Snow Going Down the Crack of My Back". As an educator, "To Mr. Sapolsky with Love" was a treat. Although this story reminded me of the television show where the teacher seems to follow the kid from 1st grade through college. My personal favorite chapters were the descriptions of going to the bathroom at night in "Oh, Baby' and "Ingrown Hair". In "Ingrown Hair", Cosby gives meaning to the guilty pleasue of popping the strange growth on you find on your body which bugs the heck out of you.

Cosby's works continue to be observant and witty. I still have a few more of his books to read and I genuinely hope he continues to write more of his edgy and intelligent humor.

3 out of 5 stars Amusing and thoughtful, but not first-rate Cosby.......2004-08-01

I have to agree with the reviewer who said that Cosby's material just doesn't translate well to the printed page. Most of this book is composed of anecdotes, commentary, and a little bit of biography that's mildly amusing.

If you're a Cosby fan, however, you should buy this book for the bit about the bug in the first chapter ("Oh, Baby!"), which is laugh-out-loud, roll-on-the-floor funny. Though I've never heard Cosby do this routine in his stand-up, I can see him incorporating it.

      5 out of 5 stars I couldn't stop laughing!.......2004-03-25

Bill Cosby is such a classic icon in America, you can guarantee anything that he writes will be hilarious! This is no exception. I must say this was my first book by Cosby given to me at Christmas time. I was dying of laughter, the way he puts things so frankly, is hilarious. A definite must have for any Cosby fan!

Leland Gregory once thought crooks, politicians, and lawyers were the greatest nitwits out there, but it turns out that the working masses are packed with the dumb, dumber, and dumbest humans on the face of the planet. Gregory's latest look at nincompoops, Idiots at Work: Chronicles of Workplace Stupidity, makes it crystal clear that the world's biggest jerks are on the job.Consider these examples: There was the woman who sued Eastman Kodak to improve the lighting conditions on her job ¿ in a darkroom? Then there's the Ontario Federation of Labor that installed a "bad boss" hotline to get a handle on labor problems - only to have the system crash soon after startup because too many calls came in. Or the interviewee who wore a Walkman, explaining that she could listen to interviewer and music at the same time. Gregory has made a career out of finding the imbeciles of the world and sharing their antics with the rest of us. His previous AMP humor compilations What's the Number for 911?, What's the Number for 911 Again?, The Stupid Crook Book, and Hey, Idiot have sold almost 200,000 copies, but his Idiots at Work takes the cake. Filled with hilarious tales of moronic managers, office idiots, stupid shareholders, daft decision makers, poor planners, and other outstanding examples of cubical klutzes, it could be Gregory's best book yet.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Bedtime Reading.......2007-09-30

Do you get those emails about the silly things that people do at work? Basically this is a book that collects silly things that people do at work.

The book is set up with one page anecdotes. Some of them I found funny, some left me rolling my eyes, some did not effect me. To me, the best of this book come from company memos, but there are also a lot of the "a customer calls the help line and asks how to determine if a mouse pad is compatible with his computer." A lot of it is silly things that I've seen before.

On the plus side the book is an easy read and did provide me with several smiles and a few laughs.

Kurt Vonnegut, who is interviewed in this volume, has said many times and in many ways that humans are always seeking extended families. Author Jeff Greenwald looks into one of the largest artificial families ever created, the legion of Star Trek fans who know each other by secret signs, symbols, and addictions, and who turn out to be one of the most interesting subjects for sociological study ever invented by a major movie studio. Greenwald travels the globe, interviewing Klingon clans from Germany, Trek-heads in an English pub, and dozens of Americans who find fulfillment in the wearing of funny ears. Of extreme interest is the section on the Klingon Language Institute, an actual organization of linguists and scholars who are translating the Bible into Klingon. There's already a splinter group who've decided to do their own Bible translation that will be truer to Klingon culture. There's also a delightfully eclectic assortment of celebrity interviews, some of which are eye-popping. The final chapter, I swear to Kahless, is a talk with an unlikely Trek fan: the Dalai Lama. An engaging read for Trekkers, sociologists, and Buddhists alike. --James DiGiovanna

        Book Description

The first book to get behind the scenes (and under the skin) of the worldwide Star Trek phenomenon. Future Perfect is a Trek book like no other: an insightful, irreverent, and sometimes hilarious look into the myth-making machinery behind the world's most enduring TV show. Bestselling travel and science author Jeff Greenwald has traveled the globe in search of Star Trek lore and signs of its influence, including attending a Klingon wedding in the Black Forest of Germany; interviewing Leonard Nimoy about his tempestuous relationship with his alter-ego, Mr. Spock; visiting NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where a new generation of aerospace engineers are living out their Star Trek-inspired fantasies; and speaking candidly with the Dalai Lama--a longtime Trek fan.

Future Perfect also provides a rare glimpse into the hearts and minds of Trek's creators. With broad access to the sets and stages of both Voyager and Star Trek: First Contact, Greenwald conducts probing interviews with series stars Patrick Stewart, Michael Dorn, and Kate Mulgrew--as well as with the writers and producers charged with bringing Gene Roddenberry's vision to life. For anyone interested in how American pop culture has taken over the world, Future Perfect is fascinating reading. For Star Trek fans, it's indispensable.

3 out of 5 stars The Future of Fantasy, But Perfect?.......2005-10-12

This 'trekker' tribute was written by a Buddhist-loving fan of all genres in which 'Star Trek' appeared from 1966 on. He lived in Kathmandu for awhile and is a fan of Dalai Lama, also. He mentions the science fiction writer, Arthur Clarke as a guide to the motorcycle cop who invented the land of Captain Kirk and his crew along with the 'Enterprise.'

In 1997, Gene Roddenberry's ashes, along with those of LSD guru Timothy Leary and twenty-two other individuals whose families paid $4,800 for the tiny tubes the size of a cigar as they were fired into orbit aboard a Pegasus rocket. After six years, that would make it 2003, the satellite would become a shooting star as it disintegrated into the night sky. He had higher dreams for Roddenberry's (The Great Bird) legacy, "they should be tucked into the armature of some interstellar probe, with digitally encoded episodes of the 'Star Trek' series.

From the comic books to the t.v. series, the crew are still a part of the lives of fans in obscure areas of the world. The movies were not as well-received, reaping almost $100,000 for one of them. Examples of the show's lingo can be heard in Belfast, Tokyo, Berling, London -- anywhere television can be seen.

The 'Enterprise' may be the most famous vehicle since Noah's Ark; more popular that Dr. Who's telephone time-travel box, and Mrs. Peel's fancy car, even Get Smart's shoe phone. England's rocketeer can't be more newsworthy than Homer Hickman of West Virginia ('October Sky' film was made in Knoxville and the surrounding area). The stars are gone now, but the spirit will live on.

Since I didn't watch any of the t.v. '60s series (though my boys did), I saw some of the movies. "Beam me up, Scotty" was Greek to me, a landlubber. That space lingo sounded more like Fred & Wilma (Betty & Barney) in prehistoric fantasy world. Now, I did see all of the 'Star Wars' movies.

Jeff Greenwald's 'Star Trek' was a place "where humanity's highest calling was exploration" (like America's real space program) and its values were freedom and compassion. In America, we have a semblance of freedom but compassion is sorely lacking. Only a made-up comic book world can have both simultaneously. Jeff has also written FEARLESS SALES, SIZE OF THE WORLD, and SCRATCHING THE SURFACE (2002).

3 out of 5 stars Trekkers around the world + celeb interviews = ?.......2001-07-08

Greenwald sets out to explain Star Trek's appeal, arguing that interest in the series soared only when the 'real thing' - the moon landings - had come to an end, and there was nothing else to serve as a vent for people's interest in space travel. The author spent time on the set of 'First Contact,' and he travels the world to interview Trekkers in the UK, Japan, Hungary, Germany, Italy, and India, where he describes how each culture puts its own spin on the Trek legacy. As well, he interviews a variety of celebrities about the impact of Trek. It sounds like a great formula, but somehow the end result falls short of its potential. The interviews of fans get a bit tedious, and Greenwald's style of writing up celebrity interviews puts too much emphasis on the interviewer.

Celebrities interviewed include Leonard Nimoy, Patrick Stewart, Gates McFadden, Kate Mulgrew (who comes across as the nicest of the bunch), Michael Dorn, Producer/writer Brannon Braga, Kurt Vonnegut, Arthur Clarke, and the Dalai Lama (yes, really).

3 out of 5 stars A pleasant, and sometimes baudy, look into the ST world.......2000-01-04

To start off, I would not recommend this book to pre-teen readers, or anyone whose beliefs lean more toward the prudish side. Greenwald occasionally spins explicitly saucy yarns about various interviewees. The use of quoted explicatives is also prevalent.

Aside from the above, "Future Perfect" is a decidedly informative behind-the-curtain book that details both Trek's worldwide fan-base and the lives and thoughts of its creators. On the whole, nothing ground-breaking is discovered or brought forth that any left-of-casual fan wouldn't already be aware of. However, the MTVesque way the author abuts divergent ten page chapters against one another is refreshing for a non-fiction book.

My only true reservation about "Future Perfect" is that Greenwald seems to abandon interesting events, incites, and people just at the moment the reader becomes entranced. Depth obviously was sacrificed for the sake of slap-dash page turning.

If ratings allowed, I would give the book 3.5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Great insight into the world-wide popularity of Star Trek.......1998-08-30

Greenwald has done an excellent job in explaining, through various interviews done all across the globe, the popularity of Star Trek. From the people who actually create each new episode to the fans who put the 'fan' in 'fanatic', it's a wonderful real life adventure for the search of the meaning of Star Trek. It's also a real insight into the current masters of Star Trek; those who have taken up the work left by Roddenberry's passing. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars The best overview of the worldwide Star Trek Phenomena!.......1998-08-03

In this unprecedented view of how and why Star Trek has captured the psyche of the entire world, Jeff Greenwald has gone where no author has gone before. He has taken an objective view of the Star Trek craze (making this book a must read for not only ST fans, but for everyone!) from the far east to America. With unprecedented access to the sound stages of ST First Contact and Paramount's Hart building (where the writers weave their magic), this book is a ST fan's dream come true. Only after reading Mr. Greenwald's "away missions" can people truly understand how a 35 year old American-made TV show can capture the minds and hearts of people all over the world. Interview with cultural icons such as the Dalai Lama, Kurt Vonnegut Jr., Arthur C. Clarke, Leonard Nimoy, Patrick Stewart, and others help make this book the superb creation that it is. Make sure to eat a good meal and have a long nap before attempting to read "Future Perfect," because once you p! ick it up you won't be able to do anything else until you finish it. Mr. Greenwald's clear and concise method of writing allows you to dive into the book, only to resurface once you have read it in its entirety. The only thing I didn't like about the book was that it ended. I could have easily read another 500 pages full of the author's amazing insights and sense of humor! Copywrite 1998.

As my title states the answers for Capcom's Fighting Evolution are all in the startegy guide for Capcom's Fighting Evolution, makes sense right? In this guide you will find the basics of the game, like what Normal moves, Special moves, Super Attacks, Throws, Blocking, Block Stun, Invincibility, and Reversals are and what they can be used for in diffrent situations. The it goes into the type of combos that can be done in this game like Link combos, Cancel combos, Jump in combos, Cross up combos, and Corner combos. The it goes in to positioning and descriptions of advanced tactis, which are Wake ups, Meaty attacks, Wake up games, Tick throw, Sacrafice throw, Empty jump, Poking, Overhead attacks, Footsies, Zoning, Mind games, and Juggle combos. This guide also explains the frame data for each move used by each character that appears in Capcom's Fighting Evolution and it also describes the diffrent gameplay systems appearing in this game. Like Street Fighter 3 and Red Earth they will have there advatages and weaknesses according to the original games they appeared in. This guide of course like every other guide will give the sercrets of the game away. Also there is an occasional typo or two. If you cant really figure the game out or you just like collecting, you should get this.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful for the cover letter 'rookie'.......2007-01-26

101 Best Cover Letters is a good buy if you are struggling with putting together just the right words for a great cover letter. Gives some "common sense" tips, but also a variety of styles (i.e. responding to classified ad, how to incorporate a reference, specific careers) for your letter. Obviously you still have to make your cover leter your own, but this book definitely helps get the wheels turning.

1 out of 5 stars 101 Flattering cover letters for sycophants.......2006-06-16

The example letters are uniformly dreadful. Marginal grammar and usage combine with a sacherine style aimed at kissing up to second-raters. These letters are guaranteed to repell anyone with whom one would really like to work.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT Book, BUT NOT in Digital Format.......2004-02-12

Great examples of cover letters with explanation of what makes them great, but I only know this because I bought the printed version after not being able to read the examples AT ALL in the downloaded digital version. I even tried reading on a 19" high resolution monitor using the PC version of Microsoft Reader, .

The problem is that even though Microsoft Reader allows one to change the fonts of the print to suit the reader, scanned images like ALL the cover letter examples are not scalable, so it is impossible to distinguish an e from an o, l from an i, and so on.

Amazon should not sell books with graphics and fixed images in digital format, or at least should warn customers of the issue before they pay to download a book in digital format that has over 70% in unscalable, unreadable format.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT FOR THE NEWBIES or EXPERTS OUT THERE!.......2003-06-08

This book was a great investment! The cover letters give you examples to use in your own letter and show you the strengths found in each cover. I actually took a highlighter to this book and highlighted my favorite lines and ideas out of certain letters. I then implemented them into my letter. Great for everyone, the professional or the inexperienced. YOU NEED THIS BOOK!

2 out of 5 stars I was very disappointed with this purchase........2002-08-28

I was very disappointed with this purchase. The only subject the letters cover is for use in getting a job. If I had known that it was strictly targeting getting a job I would have never purchased this. I was looking for a book that had a variety of letters you would find useful in the business world, not getting a job.

5 out of 5 stars A few words from one of the contributors to this book.......2002-03-02

Because of the long lead times in book publishing, by the time this book went to press, the dot-com bust was happening, however much of the information in this book is still very relevant and applicable.

When I was asked to contribute, I was already predicting that there would be sweeping changes within the high-tech industry and choose my contributions accordingly, focusing on ERP, cross-platform databases and Internet security samples as areas that would continue to be relevant beyond the dot-com boom.

The advice given by Jay and Michael as well as all of my colleagues' samples in this book are highly polished and continue to be relevant models for any individual pursuing a career in high-tech, in my opinion.
