Customer Reviews:
A Superb, detailed book.......2006-04-28
The two books that I have from this series are two of the most informative costume histories that I have ever seen. Although they are not particularly long, they are carefully and clearly written. They should be models for other writers.
This is one history of costume book that you will not need to read with an unabridged dictionary by your side. There is a detailed glossary. In addition, rather than simply throwing a lot of terms at the reader and leaving them to match them up to the details of the pictures, the author very carefully describes what each shows.
The descriptions are wonderfully detailed, including comments on class and details of fashion at particular times. I usually prefer line drawings of fashions rather than photographs of contemporary portrayals, but these photographs are clear and well annotated.
The book includes a bibliography, with a separate section on useful visual sources and an index. There are a number of books in the series (A Visual History of Costume ... ) covering the whole history of Western fashion, as well as one "condensed" volume that includes samples from all periods.

Can't Tell You How Much My Hubby and I Loath This Book - a review of Donald's Adventures #14.......2007-01-23
If you were wondering why there is no 'search inside this book' feature, please consider that the marketing people at Disney are not that stupid. Seeing-inside would have you concluding, like me, that here was a book that sincerely deserves being buried in a peat bog until the end of time.
What's the problem? Well, what's not. There is just nothing of merit here. The artwork is bland, the plots nearly non-existent, and the stereotypes, offensive. Now, more precisely...
The artwork: Disney bland. Not of itself offensive though. Just dated. T'wer that this was the only problem.
The plotting: The stories are slapped together with no respect for the reader (my six y.o. thought they were 'stupid').
In the first story, for example, Duck Avenger loses fight after fight to the bad guys. Defeated and feeling incompetent, he resolves to go on vacation, where **wah-lah** a character never seen before appears as a mastermind who joyfully takes credit for the Avenger's defeat. Duck Avenger turns the tables, however, by claiming to have known all along.
There are no clues that foreshadow this. It's just dumped in the reader's lap.
Offensive: there is such a blatant anti-girl message in the Minnie story that my husband stopped reading it to our son after the third page.
Characters say the following:
"You know females belong in the kitchen, not in the lab!
"Females are so irrational"
"Ha, Ha! Females have no head for science!"
That's no reason for women to turn into grease monkeys! I ask you! Doing Men's Work and..."
One Star. Three feeble stories in this collection. No interesting plots; they aren't challenging nor interesting even to young children. The dialog is weak and so non-PC as to make prejudiced people's knees jerk. Give this one (and probably all the rest) a pass.

Somewhere between passive aggressive and passionate aggression lies the perfect humorous response to an irritating event. Writer Ian Urbinawho started this project by writing an article for the New York Times and attracting legions of the slightly annoyedhas compiled a lovely collection of non-injurious (but highly mean) solutions that soothe the cranky soul.
The introduction gets off to a brilliant start: Urbina coated a pint of his frequently "borrowed" ice cream with a thick layer of salt, driving his ice cream thief of a housemate to furiously outing herself as the culprit. Additional tales offer websites that reject unappealing date prospects for you, examples of anti-honking haiku distributed on telephone poles all over Brooklyn and a flat-out heartening recounting of the original parking meter fairies in Anchorage, AK.
Heartening fairies and websites providing confrontation avoidance techniques aside, this is no typical relax-and-be-nice book that help readers calm down and appreciate life. Instead, it offers the dual purpose of giving everyone a chance to appreciate the sheer creative genius lurking in your average curmudgeon while inspiring the world to further feats of nearly meaningless anger management Jill Lightner
Book Description
What can you do when the world is pushing you over the edge? More than you think. For some of us, it's the automated voice that answers the phone when we'd rather talk to a real person. For others, it's the fact that Starbucks insists on calling its smallest-sized coffee "tall." Or perhaps it's those pesky subscription cards that fall out of magazines. Whatever it is, each of us finds some aspect of everyday life to be particularly maddening, and we often long to lash out at these stubborn irritants of modern life. nbsp;In Life's Little Annoyances, Ian Urbina chronicles the lengths to which some people will go when they have endured their pet peeves long enough and are not going to take it any more. It is a compendium of human inventiveness, by turns juvenile and petty, but in other ways inspired and deeply satisfying. We meet the junk-mail recipient who sends back unwanted "business reply" envelopes weighted down with sheet metal, so the mailers will have to pay the postage. We commiserate with the woman who was fed up with the colleague who kept helping himself to her lunch cookies, so she replaced them with dog biscuits that looked like biscotti. And we revel in the seemingly endless number of tactics people use to vent their anger at telemarketers, loud cellphone talkers, spammers, and others who impose themselves on us.nbsp;A celebration of the endless variety of passive aggressive behavior, Life's Little Annoyances will provide comfort and inspiration to everyone who has ever gritted his teeth and dreamed of sweet retribution against the slings and arrows of outrageous people.

Handbook for the Put Upon.......2007-03-18
This is the book you take with you to kill time in waiting rooms. Or keep in the bathroom. Nothing important, but fun to read. Almost everyone will be inspired to use one or more of these devilish methods of fighting back at life's little annoyances.
So funny!.......2007-01-10
An absolute hoot! I found this book at Borders and was laughing out loud in the aisle! Bought several copies from Amazon and have and will give them out to friends and family when appropriate. I will pass on my copy as well, as it is just too good not to share! PS, my personal favorite is the rejection "rejection" letter!
Can't Take It Anymore? Read This Book!.......2006-06-10
From the automated voice at the other end of the line to those ubiquitous subscription cards that fall out of magazines, there are aspects of everyday life that aggravate us all. In Life's Little Annoyances, New York Times reporter Ian Urbina describes these irritants and chronicles the lengths to which some people will go when they have endured their pet peeves long enough.
Some of the best ones I came across were how to get back at the annoying commissioned sales rep, the creation of Despair, Inc., and The Cashier's Spelling Bee.
This book can easily be read in an afternoon and it's a good way to relax and unwind...while thinking of ways to use some of these ideas! Highly Recommended!
a book worth reading.......2006-04-29
This is one of those books that you leave laying around and pick up
and read in bits and pieces. a chuckle here, a guffaw there. its a
pretty smart idea to pull it all together.
Clearly written.......2006-04-29
The book is a stitch. Clearly written but doesnt drone on, just grump and to the point. The introduction which talks about the reason Urbina wrote the book is perhaps the best part. well worth buying.

Customer Reviews:
Cute book, nice for light reading.......2007-10-03
This book simply put is about people who just plainly get fed up with the non-sense most of us ignore. It is full of short stories in just about every catagory of annoyance you can imagine. Read the short story of the woman who was appauled at dog owners who wouldn't pick up after their dogs in the neighorhood park; she decided to put little flags in every pile of poo, and the local park ended up looking like a monument to the fourth of July. Meet the man who got so tired of pushy salesman that he kept his old expired credit card, told the pushy salesman to go away three times, and finally pretended to be interested in buying thousands of dollars worth of mechandise only to give him an expired credit card. In the end he walked out of the store hours later without purchasing a single item. These are only two of the stories, and probably the two least entertaining stories in the entire book. My wife has an affinity for picking up little books such as these. I consider such an item mandatory bathroom reading.

The AIDS Crisis Is Ridiculous and Other Writings, 1986-2003 (Writing Art)
ASIN: 0945323018 |
Book Description
Gregg Bordowitz: Drive presents a series of essays and texts surrounding Gregg Bordowitz’s films Fast Trip, Long Drop and Habit. Images from Bordowitz’s installation Drive, exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago April 6–July 7, 2002, are also featured. Bordowitz made a big splash in 1993 with Fast Trip, Long Drop. It featured a blend of documentary footage and fictional narrative to focus on his HIV positive diagnosis, the diagnosis of a friend’s breast cancer, and the recent deaths of his grandparents. Instead of creating a somber ode to mortality, Bordowitz offered a darkly humorous essay on history, illness, AIDS activism, and representational strategies. Habit (2002) is the sequel to Fast Trip, Long Drop. It follows the regimens, routines, and thoughts that result from Bordowitz’s decade of life as a person with AIDS. Coupled with this are new interviews with some of the same faces featured in Fast Trip, Long Drop, the introduction of new friends and confidants, and extensive footage of AIDS activists in South Africa fighting and organizing to gain access to the same drugs that are keeping Bordowitz and many of his friends alive. The tone of this film is slower from the earlier one, reflecting a change in the tenor of AIDS activism, the fact that South Africa 2001 is not New York 1992, and the new domesticity and responsibility that governs Bordowitz’s life today. For the book, Brodowitz assembled a collection of authors whose views on AIDS and/or aesthetics he greatly respects. Topics range from critical assessments of his films, to the moralizing tenor found in popular images of homosexuality and AIDS, the current state of the aesthetic avant-garde, political activism, race and its complicated relation to sexuality and public policy, living with illness, and a short fiction work on the mental space of illness.

Book Description
There is overwhelming evidence that ultimately, color?s primary attribute is it?s emotional function, or it?s power and authority to create specific mood nuances. Of course, the function of this text is to study all of the components of color, and yet it is the dominant and rather manipulative character of color or mood appeal, which repeatedly surfaces and in due course validates and is the sum total of all other traits. Additionally, Dynasty of Light recognizes light as the source of color, and is therefore committed to the physics of color, as well. The physiological, psychological, symbolical, and art historical approaches to color and it?s component facts and theory is featured, accompanied by several cultural perspectives. One compelling feature is the added function of the analysis of color pertaining to any given color composition. The text encourages both project solution skills (hands-on), and the written/oral analysis of color. Evidence indicates by teaching color theory from both a project and written analysis emphasis, reveals conclusively that the student who practices both, has the advantage. Twenty-first century color skills and knowledge has created higher demands for color excellence than ever before. The student of color needs every advantage possible in order to compete in today?s world. This text provides the tools and insight needed for color superiority.
