At the turn of the last century, academic painters were producing formal works, often with strongly moral overtones, at the same time that a generation of younger artists like Picasso, Matisse, and Kandinsky were exploring revolutionary new methods and ideas. By presenting the range of styles vying for attention at a single point in time, the authors of 1900: Art at the Crossroads challenge the idea of art as a linear progression. The book is the lavish catalog of an exhibition organized by the Royal Academy of London and the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Its schizophrenic theme is suggested in the title of the first essay, "Art in 1900: Twilight or Dawn?" The material is organized into concepts established by the French Academy two centuries earlier--still life, the nude, landscapes, and history paintings--plus sections with more modern relevance such as cityscapes and bathers. Arranging works by theme rather than by artist or movement allows for some brilliant juxtapositions: a classical naked Danae by Carolus-Duran is paired with an abstracted Degas nude; a sentimental study of crippled boys by Bastida with a vicious Munch mother-and-child (both paintings titled Inheritance). The preoccupations of fin-de-siècle society emerge; several different treatments of Salome with the severed head of John the Baptist, for example, embody male fears of the femme fatale and her threat to bourgeois values. The book ends with a useful 70-page section of artist biographies. 1900 is a beautifully produced and stimulating study of a pivotal point in European art history. --John Stevenson
Book Description
Exactly 100 years ago, art was at a crossroads. Painters such as Sargent, Whistler, Homer, and Rouault were widely acclaimed. Czanne, Degas, Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec, Rodin, Munch, Klimt, and other modern masters were in their prime. And the revolutionaries who would go on to change the course of Western art-Picasso, Matisse, Mondrian, Kandinsky, and Nolde, among others-were just getting started.
This book, the companion volume to a major international exhibition, provides an eye-opening look at what these and other artists were creating in this watershed year. Organized by subject-from bathers, femmes fatales, and self-portraits to rural scenes, religion, and social comment-and featuring more than 300 colorplates, the book presents both famous and less well-known works. By including a wide range of paintings and sculptures executed at roughly the same time, Robert Rosenblum and MaryAnne Stevens illuminate the cultural crosscurrents that were reshaping Western art-including nationalism, psychology, and technology-and help us see familiar masterworks with a fresh eye. More than 500 illustrations, more than 300 in full color, 9 5/8 x 12"
ROBERT ROSENBLUM is professor of fine arts at New York University, a curator at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City, and a contributing editor at ArtForum. His 14 previous books include such classics as Abrams' Cubism and 20th-Century Art and, with H. W. Janson, 19th-Century Art.
MARYANNE STEVENS is senior curator at the Royal Academy of Arts, London. She has edited and contributed to many books and catalogues, including Monet in the 20th Century and The Impressionist and the City.

1900 - A Pivotal Point In Art History - Superb Color Plates.......2004-08-08
Robert Rosenblum's "1900: Art At The Crossroads" is a gem of a book. This exhibition catalogue contains more than 300 color plates and approximately 200 additional illustrations of paintings and sculpture from a benchmark period in art history. The year nineteen hundred, the beginning of the 20th century, ushered in a period when art was truly at a crossroads. It was, at once, the beginning and the end of an era - the culmination of 19th century art and the beginning of a revolution. Salon artists, the academic realists, Rouault, Sargent, Whistler, and Homer, etc., were at their peak and their work was widely acclaimed. And painters, newly arrived on the scene, from Impressionists, Post-Impressionists to those who had yet to find a label for their work, like Cezanne, Matisse, Mondrian, Picasso, Kandinsky, Klimt and Gaugin, were beginning to discover new methods, new ideas, to express what they saw and felt. They learned from tradition and sought to escape it. These artists would go on to change the way the Western world looked at art
This compilation, the companion volume to a major international exhibit, provides an extraordinary visual history of that period. The quality of the reproductions, especially the color plates, is superb. Work by lesser known artists are displayed here, as well as paintings and sculptures by those whose names we recognize immediately. The book is organized into categories according to subject, i.e., bathers, nudes, self-portraits, still life and landscapes. This method of organization, similar to the concepts established by the French Academy in the 17th century, makes for some fascinating comparisons, i.e., an abstracted Degas nude alongside a classical nude by Carolus-Duran. Robert Rosenblum and Mary Anne Stevens purposely included a wide range of work completed at approximately the same time to reflect change - the wide variety of styles and techniques employed at this period by different artists.
This is a beautiful book and a brilliant study of a pivotal point in European art history. There is a 70 page section of artists' biographies at the catalogue's conclusion.

a Rosenblum fan.......2000-05-23
Robert Rosenblum is a true scholar in the world of art history. Throughout my undergraduate years, I had looked to his writings for guidance and to gain an understanding of the subject matter. While 1900, Art At The Crossroads is enjoyable and the color plates are stunning, it should be noted that it is companion piece to an exhibition and not a book for academic research. Overall, it is a fine book.
Superb Book!.......2000-05-13
This book balances the often overpraised work of the impressionists with the reality of the Salon artists (academics) at that time and the rumblings of modernism to come. As a painter, this title is a real treat... it's always been so hard to find examples from this era, that have not been washed away from post 1920's revisionist art history. Accurately reconstructing the exhibits of that era and showing what was on the fringes speaks for itself.
Book Description
American popular culture changed dramatically during the Vietnam era--from Leave it To Beaver to All in the Family and from Bobby Darin to Bob Dylan. In Crossroads, historian Mitchell K. Hall explores the popular culture that shaped the baby boomers and the transformation that generation wrought in movies, television, sports, and music. As he traces the evolution of American culture, Hall looks at the ways in which these cultural elements not only underwent radical structural changes but also reflected the upheaval and unrest in Vietnam era America.

Book Description
In Critical Condition, Eleanor Heartney examines the art world from 1985 to 1994, a tumultuous period that ushered in the art boom and bust, the emergence (and in some cases disappearance) of developments like Appropriation, Neo-Geo, and multiculturalism, and the ongoing attack on art by the religious right and political conservatives. Chronicling events that took place during this decade, with a particular focus on public art, Heartney also examines the mechanisms of the gallery and media system, especially as they relate to the practice of art criticism; as well as the complexities of the debate on art and pornography. Written during a pivotal period of contemporary art, Heartney’s essay provides a picture of a culture in a crisis of values which has yet to be resolved.

Crossroad of Arts, Crossroad of Cultures is the first book-length study of the aesthetic similarities between the French Parnassians, a 19th-century group of poets led by Théophile Gautier, and the Russian Acmeist poets, including Osip Mandelstam and Anna Akhmatova, who were active in the second decade of the 20th century.
The Acmeists shared with the Parnassians a classical sensibility, an aspiration to state-of-the-art verbal craftsmanship, and a keen interest in the three-dimensional, physical world. Their love of plastic beauty as embodied in painting, sculpture, and architecture found natural release in verse about works of art.
The book shows how Acmeist texts document aspects of Russian Modernist culture while continuing the Parnassian tradition of poetry inspired by visual art.

Good price, good deal.......2000-09-14
I bought this calendar at the museum itself- it's a nice piece featuring all the highlights of the Guggenheim's inhouse exhibits. From Monet, to Picasso, to Munch- it's a pretty good mix of the different types of art (serialism, etc.) I'm not too proficient in the arts (call me a beginner if you will), but I will appreciate this item when it comes time to change calendars.

Seeker's Mask is the sequel to P.C. Hodgell's classic high fantasy novels God Stalk and Dark of the Moon (collected in the omnibus volume Dark of the Gods). Fast-paced, fascinating, and skillfully written, Seeker's Mask continues the story of Jame the Talisman, the noblewoman/thief who possesses (or is possessed by) dangerous magical talents.
Jame has finally been reunited with her twin brother, the Highlord Torisen. But the joy of reunion doesn't last long. Jame is banished to the purdah-like Women's Halls as her brother's noblemen argue over who will marry her. When assassins slip into the segregated quarters, Jame must flee for her life, alone save for her blind, mind-linked cub, Jorin. But her attempt to rejoin her brother is complicated by court intrigues; by the ghost of her cruel half- brother Bane; by the conquered Merikit, who assault Jame's people with unknown magic; and by the weirding-mist, a mysterious fog that magically moves individuals, armies, and even castles to new and sometimes unidentifiable locations in the Riverland and beyond. And there are other problems. Jame's little-understood magical abilities are growing not only stronger, but more destructive. She bears the Ivory Knife and the Book Bound in Pale Leather, monstrously dangerous magic tools. The lost memories of her adolescence are returning, and they reveal that Jame may be a servant of the archenemy of her people, the worlds-destroying Perimal Darkling. --Cynthia Ward
Book Description
Meisha Merlin is proud to announce the continuing adventures of Jame in P. C. Hodgell's Seeker's Mask, the third book of the Kencyrath. This edition will contain a new introduction by Charles de Lint, the novel Seeker's Mask, and the maps that P. C. has created for the book. Jame has found and been reunited with her ten year older twin brother Tori. Now all she has to do is find a place for herself among the Kencyrs that are following her brother. This is not quite as easy as it sounds. For, if you remember, Jame has not grown up in the normal Kencyr lifestyle. When she is placed in the Women's Halls and is expected to change and become a normal quiet Kencyr lady, it is the Women's Halls that undergo the changes. For when you have Shadow Guild Assassins, ghosts, strange beings, and other characters from your past after you, it is rather difficult not to want a weapon, instead of a sewing needle, in your hand. Soon Jame and Jorin, her blind ounce, are on the run again, trying to stay one step ahead of the danger.
Customer Reviews:
a rocking book.......2006-03-15
i read the second book and i find that it continue flawlessly into this book.I lov the way Jame had been potrayed and i can understand Torisen apprehension at finding Jame. But i think their relationship will grow better in the next book as i think that Jame,Torisen and Kindrie formed the three faced God.Each one of them represent a different aspect of their God.Toriesen and Jame shared a connection that strong enough that those bind to Torisen are bind to Jame and vice versa.I probably had read the book a couple of times since i had it.
I find that every line convey a certain richness and i had my favourite lines and scenes. But the best scene for me is when TOrisen disowned Kallystine not only for what she tried to do to him but to what had happened to Jame.Jame'presence had freed Torisen from Kallystine influence so i think the twins nwill slowly but surely rely on each other strengths.Torisen will learn to trust Jame and Jame will be the rock in Torisen life.I do think this is one of the best book that i have read.
A World that you can believe in.......2005-01-03
The whole Jame series is so good. I love them. They are so good because the plot is so original, there are so many books out there that should be sued for stealing plot lines. These books are such a refreshing read and amazingly enough, our main characters aren't omnipotent gods. While Jame has a great deal of power as a Shanir (aka, Kencyr Highborn with supernatural abilities) she is haunted by her abusive childhood and adolescence that she is only starting to remember. She makes terrible mistakes and is tempted to make selfish decisions. Torisen, her brother is the Highlord of the Kencyrath, and also has great power. But unlike Jame Torisen tries to deny his heritage as one of the Shanir (once again, thanks to an abusive childhood). One of his abilities is farseeing, particularly in his sleep, and so he is an insomniac, haunted by the voice of their insane, dead father. The Lords he governs with on the High Council at best try to minipulate him, and at worst would love to see him dead. It doesn't help anything that in the first book Jame made the Kencyr High Priest stationed in the city of Tai-Tastigon, Ishtier, hate her either. And our other protagonist is Kindrie, a Shanir Priest with a awsome gift of healing, but has been locked out of his own soul by Ishtier and his allies which greatly limits his powers. He is also troubled and as result of his priestly upbringing in the luxurious Priest's College is completely unprepared for the journey with Jame that he embarks on, especially now that his healing powers are nearly nonexistent. Jame must also deal with responsibility for her semi-demonic half brother. Turned into an undead shadow being that was killed and then forced to keep on existing by a freak mistake, precipitated by Jame who had without knowing blood bound him through another one of her unknown Shanir abilities. This means that his sould is bound to her to death and maybe beyond, and now he must perforce consume other souls to remain in the world. Jame has to deal with the guilt of creating this thing and putting her half brother through such pain. Not to mention the fact that since she had blood bound him she was now resposible for him. Obviously Jame and Tori go through some awsome trials and yet do make mistakes. Everyone should read this book.
Slow at first but worth rereading.......2003-03-01
It is not as fluid as the first two but still an excellent story.
Really intriguing characters and development. Great job, Patricia!
Hodgell Rocks!.......2003-01-24
This is an absolute must-have for any fantasy reader. I have read and re-read her books and eagerly anticipate the arrival of the next ones to find out what happens.
The characters within have a depth to them that is really pretty impressive. The detail in the cultures and the world has astounded me. Can you tell that I am a Hodgell fan yet? I won't go into the details on the storyline, you owe it to yourself to buy the book and find out for yourself.
Every fantasy lover owes it to themselves to do that
Usual Superb writing, just not about Jaime and her brother.......2003-01-24
I was oh-so-excited when the book finally became available and I was able to purchase it. When I received the book I discovered that maybe half of the short stories contained within involved Jaime and her family. Hodgell's writing is excellent, of course, but I was expecting to spend the day feasting on unread tales of the adventures of my favorite heroine. I had no interest in the other stories that were included. What is there is good, but I would not have purchased the book if I had actually known what was contained. Borrowed it, absolutely, but not bought it. I guess I will just have to wait until her next book to get my Jaime fix. *grins*

Customer Reviews:
A good companion to the movie.......2006-08-24
If you are thinking about this item then you already know the movie, so I'll spare those details. This is the screenplay for the film, including stage directions and scene intro/setup just like in the script. Every word of the film is in this book, with just a few spots in the movie where a word is dropped or changed from the script. Most Americans will find it difficult to understand the meaning of much of the slang used in the film or pick out all of the dialogue through the heavy accents, so having this book with you while watching the film will greatly enhance your viewing. This book doesn't really have anything else besides the screenplay and so it's roughly the size of a DVD case (a little bigger). I recommend this to anyone who owns Beautiful Thing.
BEAUTIFUL THING, CHANGED THE WAY TO SEE THE LIFE........1999-04-06
I BELIEVE, THAT BEAUTIFUL THING IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FILM OF GAY GENRE THAT I'D HAS SEE, IS A FRESH FILM, THAT TELL US A STORY VERY COMMON IN OUR SOCIETY. I ALWAYS BELIEVED THAT THE HOMOSEXUALITY WAS SOMETHING BAD, BUT WITH THIS FILM I CHANGED MY POSITION IN FRONT THIS CONCEPT. THE ACTORS SCOTT NEAL AND GLEN BERRY BETWEEN OTHERS MAKED AN ESPECTACULAR ROLL AND CONGRATULATIONS TO THE SCREENWRITER AND THE DIRECTOR, THE SCREENPLAY IS VERY GRATEFUL.
They Made Their Own Kind Of Music.......1999-03-28
For a change, we have here a most outstanding gay story which doesn't mention AIDS every three paragraphs - in fact, I believe it only comes up once. What a relief! It's the most moving love story, where those who fall in love just happen to be two boys. This really has to be read to be believed - no review could do it justice, so my advice to you is simply to get hold of a copy! You will also fall in love - with Jamie & Ste, Leah, her Mum and Sandra - Jamie's Mum. You will laugh and cry, sometimes at the same time. A modern masterpiece. Some further advice to you, when you've finished reading, find a Mama Cass/The Mamas And The Papas CD and lap up the atmosphere. You'll notice how many songs could have been written especially for "Beautiful Thing". By the way, Mama Cass didn't die choking on a sandwich - she had a heart attack.
Beautiful Thing : A Screenplay by Jonathan Harvey.......1999-01-29
It is about two school boys who fall in love.
A long hot summer on a housing estate in South London. James is bunking off school, whilst his Mother Sandra juggles job promotion and her relationship with hippy-dippy boyfriend Tony.
Next door lives Sassy Leah, who spends her day listening to Mama Cass records. In the same block, Jamie's class mate Steve, although sporty and popular at school, Is bullied by his drunken father. One day Steve, seeks refuge in Sandra's flat and ends up sleeping head to toe with Jamie...
Author says "The only images I really had of gay people when I was growing up were those public boys in cricket jumpers taking each other punting on the river, or the working class boys who got kicked out and ended up working as rent boys. This play in which somebody can be working class and still have their sexuality accepted. That was my agenda. It's not about what you get up to after lights out, it's about falling in love."
The feel good book of the summer film 96
We love the book and the film

A Wonderful Story of First Love.......1998-12-16
Beautiful Thing is one of the warmest, most positive stories about gay love I have ever read. More importantly, it is about love in general, and all the fears, hopes, dreams, etc. that go with first love, not just gay love. I can't recommend it more highly for anyone, gay or straight.

Drafting to Win: The Ultimate Guide to Fantasy Football.......2007-04-09
I generally play poker, last year was my first season participating in fantasy football. I read this book Drafting to win and took down first place. If you have any sort of mathematical background I highly recommend this book. Better yet if you are a competitive person who likes to win then get the book. If you like to loose don't get the book.
DTW- A must read for fantasy football diehards and beginners.......2005-09-24
If you're reading this review, then the book is a perfect fit for you. You are either a diehard or FF novice. Regardless of what category you fall into, Mr. Zarzycki's approach caters to both. Much of the fantasy football content out there is stale, generic and downright useless. Zarzycki offers a nice simplistic tutorial for beginners (which experienced players will want to skip) but then quickly moves into elements of drafting techniques that can take you to the next level and help you to compete with even the most experienced fantasy players. I've played fantasy sports for nearly 20 years with much success and still found Zarzycki's info to be helpful in my preparation this year. The math is made simple in the form presented. In this ever evolving industry, we always need cutting edge content to take us to the next level and Zarzycki does just that.
Zarzycki's Drafting To Win = THE Fantasy Football Bible.......2005-09-18
I'm a poker player as well and Zarzycki's Drafting To Win (DTW) book reminds me of Doyle Brunson's Super System in that it gives you a complete understanding of what it takes to win consistently, only DTW teaches fantasy football instead of poker. I consider DTW to be the Fantasy Football Bible the same way poker players revere Doyle Brunson's Super System book as the Poker Bible. Whether you want to learn about beginner aspects such as how to find a league and choosing the league suited best for you or expert techniques such as how to rank players, project statistics and Zarzycki's bread and butter -- how to draft players -- Zarzycki covers it all. What I respect most is that the author himself has applied the methods in DTW to his own fantasy football play and has won thousands of dollars on all levels of fantasy football, from local leagues to the World Championship of Fantasy Football (WCOFF) in Las Vegas. DTW has taken my game to the next level and I can't wait to start benefiting monetarily at the end of each and every season. Reading "Rashaan Salaam" review might scare some people into thinking that the math is difficult. I'm not an engineer by any means and found the math to be laid out in a very simple manner, pretty-easily absorbed. If I can understand this stuff, anybody can. I find Zarzycki's drafting strategies amazing. I wish I would've originated the concepts found in DTW...oh well, at least now I can benefit from them. This book is a must for ALL levels.
Pefect for all level of Fantasy Football Players.......2005-09-17
This is an excellent book and perfect for all levels of Fantasy Football players. I have been playing Fantasy Football for 12 years and thought I knew all there was to know. I bought the book out of curiousity because of the author's fantasy football success - wondering if he knew something I didn't. Well he did! Even experienced fantasy football players will get something out of this book. Interesting, well-written and great information!
The cutting edge.......2005-09-16
This book is the absolute cutting edge of fantasy football publications. It is invaluable information for both beginners and experts alike.
If you are an experienced player, it is recommended that you skip the first couple of chapters, as these are for beginners. But as Mr Zarzycki begins to explain his rating system, and what I'll call floating ratings, as they can actually change every round of your draft, it is truly revolutionary.
I have been playing fantasy football for 18 years, and this is the best system I have seen. If you want to succeed at fantasy football, then this book is a must. Mr. Zarzycki's success speaks for itself.

Customer Reviews:
One of the best investments I've ever made!.......2007-08-15
I thought I knew a lot about designing an optimal website, using Google AdWords and online marketing. Then I picked up this book, and learned how much more I could be doing, and how many mistakes I had made. There are at least a half-dozen great ideas that can be implemented quickly and at little or not cost to improve your site's placement on search engines, and to attract more relevant AdWord clicks.
Wow! Is this complete.......2007-03-21
I have opted into online courses and even have an MBA where I studied E Business. This is by far the most complete, helpful and timely guide I have seen to succeed with an internet business. It is rare that I read a "How To" cover to cover, but this is an exception. It is certainly the first time I have had my highlighter out since Grad school. If you want to succeed in an ebusiness, this is the way to get started!!
Not Bad Overall.......2007-03-13
While normally I go for books aimed at experts (i.e the ones that are 400+ pages and dry as a salt sandwich), this book had received enough positive reviews that I gave it a shot. I was not disappointed.
For someone with my background (experienced software guru and web designer, with a moderate amount of Google know-how), I was still able to gain some valuable insight. So you're not surprised, this book is as much Marketing 101, as it is about Google (particularly the first half of the book). But it's needed to give the book a solid grounding from which to make its Google-related recommendations.
The bottom line though, hasn't changed from prior years: if you do the right thing and make your site rich in useful content, relative to its general audience and subject, you're going to do well with Google. If it's only moderately relevant or lacking in information "density" (the amount IOW), all the tricks in the world won't make your page rank any better. First, make sure you're really delivering the goods (the information your customers want and need and not a bunch of link farms, fluff, etc), *then* make sure your meta-tags, document names, document structure, Ad Words, and all the rest, are Google-savvy. The latter without the former, is useless. To the author's credit, he emphasizes this in several chapters.
Overall, I felt like there was a little too much "Freshman Marketing" and some of it was rehashed unnecessarily IMO (though someone with minimal marketing background would probably find it useful). I think the first 70 pages could probably be distilled down to about 40 or 50, but who's counting? ;-)
Recommended for anyone getting start with a business web site or who wants to make their existing site better.
Great book, well worth the read.......2006-10-28
This book is MORE than a book about Google. It should almost have a different title like "Growing Your Business Online: plus strategies for improving your placement on Google".
The book covers so much more than Google placement. It shares responsible, realistic insight into how to improve your web site with the goal of first improving the visitor/customer experience and second to improve your overall relevance with search engines. Dave's advice comes from a respectable, responsible approach to creating genuine results for your web site. He also provides ample warnings about using web site trickery that could leave your site's relevance & credibility in ruins.
A MUST READ for web developers and Internet marketing folk.
A Very Comprehensive Guidebook.......2006-09-06
This book isn't just about advertising on Google. There's lot more. Of course, complete idiots won't benefit from it, but the book begins from the ground for people not familar with online marketing.
It first outlines the importance of visibility, then touches on how Google actually works. No secrets here. Newbies learn a lot, but not the old hands. Then, it goes into great detail on how the website should be set up, presented and maintained. Again, very useful newbie tips on blogs and content generation are given but I doubt the experienced user will learn a lot of new things here.
There is also some mention about making money from Adsense and affiliate programs, but personally, I haven't had very good experiences with these programs.
The book ends with the future of findability. I find nothing futuristic about the author's ideas. Still, a good book for those just starting out.
