A Great Non-Fiction Book for Young Readers and Pre-Readers.......2003-02-13
This book is a very interesting short explanation of the processes involved in making blue jeans. It uses simple words, but is not a dumbed-down narrative. It's great for that budding process engineer in your household - the one whose favorite question isn't "Why?", but "How?"
The book is illustrated with a variety of stock photographs, many with children as the focal point. This helps grab and maintain youngsters' interest.
Since blue jeans are a common item in most kids' lives, this overview of where they come from can serve as a springboard for many interesting discussions of where other everyday things come from.
The book does contain some unfamiliar words, but at about one sentence per page, the book will not frustrate newer readers - probably 2nd grade level or advanced 1st grade level. It's also a great book for reading to younger kids.
Highly recommended.

Book Description
What happens when a Goddess First Class gets a little tipsy when partying with pals? Well, lacking a mean bone in her body, the pickled Belldandy uses her powers to give everyone what they want -- and every time she gives happiness to someone, there's an unexpected consequence: boyfriend Keiichi is visited by an equal or greater unhappiness! And when Belldandy magically glues her hand to Keiichi's, despite the best efforts of Bell's sister goddesses Urd and Skuld to separate them, Keiichi's begins to notice that there might be some benefits to be linked to the most beautiful goddess on earth! It's bath time!
Customer Reviews:
Oh My Goddess! This is a great book in a great series!.......2003-03-19
We FINALLY get to meet Urd's angel! Don't get me wrong--Holy Bell and Noble Scarlet are beautiful and sweet, but World of Elegance ROCKS! From her split appearance to her fire-breathing power, she is the Angel of Angels. Peorth's Glorious Rose is cool too, but we see so little of her that I can't really make a judgement.
If you saw the movie, you saw how cool World of Elegance is.
As for the other stories...I read the one about Belldandy getting drunk when it was in the monthly comic, so that one was not new to me. And the others were pretty good, but like I said, I read them before too. All except for the one about Urd and her angel.
The art is breathtaking, and the story is original and fun. This is one of my favorite series (Five Star Stories and Real Bout High School being the other two), and anyone who's ever read OMG/AMG knows why I love this series!
I only wish they'd put out the books faster!
Four Tales, One Book.......2003-03-14
This is volume 15 of the English-translated manga series "Oh My Goddess". Fans of the previous manga won't be dissappointed here. Those new to manga should enjoy the sweet and funny tales of the goddess Belldandy and her human boyfriend (and the one she is contracted to) Keiichi.
There are four seperate stories in this volume of the manga. The first deals with Keiichi's sister Megumi and her racing a motorcycle lady known simply as "The Queen". The second tale deals with Belldandy's older sister Urd and Urd's loss of her angel World of Elegance. BTW, that's Urd and her angel on the book's cover.
The third tale deals with Belldandy getting drunk off of cola and casting a spell which causes her and Keiichi to have to hold hands continually (much to her younger sister Skuld's dismay). And finally, the fourth tale deals with the robot Banpei falling in love with an automoton. Skuld must deal with the fact that her creation has grown beyond his original programming.
Bottom line: Some light-hearted tales with Urd and Skuld growing somewhat. Also, a nice look at the current state of the relationship between Belldandy and Keiichi. There are lots of funny moments making this well worth spending your money on.

Book Description
Enjoy the most comprehensive and hilariously entertaining lexicon of the colorful and deeply expressive language of Yiddish. With the recent renaissance of interest in Yiddish, and in keeping with a language that embodies the variety and vibrancy of life itself, The New Joys of Yiddish brings Leo Rosten’s masterful work up to date. Revised for the first time by Lawrence Bush, in close consultation with Rosten’s daughters, it retains the spirit of the original—with its wonderful jokes, tidbits of cultural history, Talmudic and biblical references—and is enhanced by hundreds of new entries and thoughtful commentary on how Yiddish has evolved over the years, as well as clever illustrations by R. O. Blechman.
Did you know that cockamamy, bluffer, maven, and aha! are all Yiddish words? If you did, you’re a gaon, possessing a lot of seykhl.
Customer Reviews:
Get an older edition, without the irrelevant and/or PC footnotes.......2007-02-08
There's no need to repeat the deservedly fine comments already posted about Rosten's book. I simply wish to recommend buying any edition PRIOR to this 2001 revision by Lawrence Bush. While Bush does preserve Rosten's witty text intact, he spoils things by adding agenda-driven footnotes throughout. Bush castigates Rosten for making Reform jokes (please! I was raised Reform, and I found them funny) and ruins the humourous "shadchan" (matchmaker) entry by going on at length about Jewish domestic abuse (a problem to be sure, but no more so than in any other ethnicity). Lighten up, Bush! Finally, he inserts commercials for Reconstructionism and Jewish Renewal, which are valid expressions of Judaism but are post-1950s American in origin and NOT a part of the old Yiddish culture Rosten celebrates. Stick with Rosten's original text if you can find it.
Revisionism has ruined this book........2006-04-01
First of all you may make the mistake I made and think that just because Leo Rosten's name is emblazoned in huge letters on the cover that this book was authored by him. He is deceased. In his absence the book has been completely gutted, the innuendo removed, the vulgarity lightened. The idea in the beginning was subversive. Bring to light the Yiddish language that had been excluded for so long from the European tradition, and let the gritty coloring of yiddish words speak for themselves. Instead of busying himself with a contrived story of yiddish culture, the first Joys of Yiddish really was just words. And the words were so good that they literally spoke for themselves. Just saying them and mulling them over was enough to expose the truth of where they came from, as well the lies of those who sought to repress them. This new book, The New Joys of Yiddish has swung completely the opposite direction. Now the book is filled with a contrived culture bound representation of Yiddish where Yiddish is all things Jewish. The author's daughters along with their hired script-nurse have recast the book in terms of modern Jewish identity politics, with Yiddish playing a lead role. If you are interested in such things, if for example you need to know that cockamammy is not Yiddish but sounds like a colorful Jewish expression, read on. I for one was saddened by their wholesale destruction of a great book that was keeping the candle burning for one of history's most subversive languages.
Fiddleresque.......2004-02-07
Found this is a New Bedford goodwill store for 10 cents. It has a lot of interesting info in it, but drenched in Fiddleresque sentimentality about Jewish expressiveness. One interesting theme is his ongoing campaign to claim disputed slangwords for Yiddish as opposed to German, Gaelic etc: fin, shamus.
He barely touches one important subject -- the adoption of Yiddish syntax into slangy English, "enough already," "you should only live so long," etc.
America ganef! It's even better........2002-12-08
"America ganef!" my Grandma would exclaim upon encountering a pleasant surprise. (See JOY page 115.) That's my reaction seeing this old friend renewed, broader, more current and more liberal in its Jewish scope, and more lively and attractive because of the illustrations and layout. Yet it is still the warm, friendly, funny book I remember from nearly 30 years ago.
Somehow the New Joys of Yiddish has more meaning for me now that nearly all those family members I remember using Yiddish often - some relying on it almost entirely, others just when they used a forceful, colorful, close-to-the heart expression (which was very often) - are gone. The book evokes memories of those good people to whom we owe so much - if only for having had the wisdom to select this country for us and our children.
The book is like a warm and witty friend whose conversation brightens your home and is rarely pedantic. (At a couple of places, such as his seven page exposition on the messiah, he does go on too long.)
Two types of people will find this book enjoyable: those who read the original edition and those who didn't.
So to the Rosten family and Larry Bush - mazal tov!
The Understated Joys of Yiddish.......2002-04-24
Simplistic and without real scholarship, one wonders why this is the book that people chose for any kind of language enhancment of the joys of that most subtle and lovely of langauges.

Book Description
In this study of Hollywood gangster films, Jonathan Munby examines their controversial content and how it was subjected to continual moral and political censure.
Beginning in the early 1930s, these films told compelling stories about ethnic urban lower-class desires to "make it" in an America dominated by Anglo-Saxon Protestant ideals and devastated by the Great Depression. By the late 1940s, however, their focus shifted to the problems of a culture maladjusting to a new peacetime sociopolitical order governed by corporate capitalism. The gangster no longer challenged the establishment; the issue was not "making it," but simply "making do."
Combining film analysis with archival material from the Production Code Administration (Hollywood's self-censoring authority), Munby shows how the industry circumvented censure, and how its altered gangsters (influenced by European filmmakers) fueled the infamous inquisitions of Hollywood in the postwar '40s and '50s by the House Committee on Un-American Activities. Ultimately, this provocative study suggests that we rethink our ideas about crime and violence in depictions of Americans fighting against the status quo.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely essential reading for film scholars.......2006-01-13
Munby's book examines the gangster film in relation to industrial and cultural history and particularly the forces of censorship or moralism in Hollywood. This brilliant book tackles difficult questions of cultural analysis and film history and is eloquent to boot. Stellar reading, really inspiring for film--especially gangster genre--scholars.
Why do we like gangster films?.......2000-05-10
This is a very exciting book about why many people find gangster films appealing and why at the same time lots of institutions of authority have found them to be threatening, right from the very beginning. For example, it provides a detailed background of the gangster film's origins in the early '30s, exploring matters such as the motivations for Prohibition, anti-immigration movements, and what was taken to be "proper" American speech, in order to provide a sense of the feelings of resentment these films tapped into and why their early viewers were so excited by them.
This sense of how gangster films have continually spoken for those otherwise ignored marks one of the book's most important themes. It also helps to provide an explanation of how the gangster film changed over the decades in response to attacks, both direct and indirect. The book describes and explains the gangster film's continual battles with various censors, within and without Hollywood, to show how these films continually evolved in ways that enabled them to cater again and again to those who would dissent with an oppressive status quo. Of especial interest is the chapter on German _film noir_ directors, which provides a very plausible account of why much _noir_ should be subsumed under the gangster genre. Dealing with the same issues of subversiveness and critical perspectives of existing power structures, much standard _film noir_ is more a continuation of the gangster film tradition than a break with it. Lots of other critics have noted this connection between these two types of films, but few have argued for it as forcefully, as clearly, or in as much detail as Munby. A tantalizing epilogue links these films to gangsta movies of the 1990s, a connection that one hopes will be worked out in more detail in the future.
Perhaps the most exciting thing about _Public Enemies, Public Heroes_, however, is that it explains how the violence and crime of gangster films appeals to us in ways that largely avoid the jargon-heavy vocabulary of much film studies scholarship today. The style, while dense, is not overlayed with extensive theoretical termimology. One can tell that Munby has reflected deeply on these matters and how to explain them to an audience that isn't necessarily a part of current theoretical discussions of film.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wished to understand better both the appeal of gangster films and what these films have typically reacted against. It shows that crime and violence, in narrative contexts, may be used to express in vivid and at times graphic detail objections to those things that order and structure our lives in oppressive ways.

Book Description
This is a study of the way in which popular words and music relate to American life. The question of what popular song was, and why it came into existence, as well as how each song fitted within the context of the larger 20th century society are considered and explained clearly and fruitfully. The author also offers insight into why musical styles were seen to change as they did during this time period.

Winning Concepts for Draw and Lowball.......2007-01-28
The book is terrific. The service was terrible. I accidentally double ordered the book and the Amazon clerk refused to allow me to cancel one order, saying that "The book was already pulled, boxed and ready for shipment." Although it was only two minutes since I had ordered the book twice by mistake. I now own two copies and will never do business with Amazon again,
"Draw" is Jacks-to-open.......2006-03-02
I bought the book for help with playing 5-card draw on the internet. Nowhere in the description of the book did I see that he discusses Jacks-to-open as his draw game. This is a very different game for guts-to-open that is played on internet sites that I know. I wish I had known.
Then he spends the first 39 pages with an introduction and as many as 50 reasons for each of the following actions: Open, Call, Fold, Raise, Check, Bet, Bluff, Play, and Quit, including such gems as this reason for checking: You are planning to sandbag.
He lists some errors that are commonly made by players, and I found this interesting, along with a few other things that prevented me from rating this lower than 3 stars.

Customer Reviews:
Fast Read .......2007-09-19
This book is a very quick read and has a lot of common sense philosophies in it. Things we all know but sometimes need to be reminded of. It doesn't have a lot of meat in it but some good examples.
It's Time We Grow Up........2006-11-03
Now we need to get folks to pay attention to our Humanity, at least to try to understand. This Book is a darn good start.
Great Primer for Busy New Leaders.......2006-04-19
I work in performance improvement at a technology company where we have numerous engineers challenged with the transition from individual contributor to manager. Often, their engineering background leaves them ill-prepared for the inter-personal reality of managing and leading others. In a nutshell, they need to develop their emotional intelligence. This book gives them E.I. in a nutshell. They don't have time for lengthy, impractical tomes. This book gives them what they need to identify their opportunites for improvement and strategies they can quickly import into their personal development plans. Kudos to Dr. Feldman for giving me a valuable tool!
This small book is a gem for what it covers, and what it doesn't.. .......2005-11-30
This small book is a gem for what it covers, and what it doesn't. Don't be fooled by its brevity. If you're planning on providing or coordinating a company training on EI Leadership, this Handbook might be your best bet.
The reason I say this is that even though the book is short, that's only by design, where the author has chose each word carefully, and decided to not write an academic or research oriented text. Instead, Dr. Feldman has written a Handbook to support training and guidance to an organizational team.
I found the Core Skills and discussion of the PaRC Method direct, useful, and easy to understand. The Self Assessment is also useful as well in terms of surveying the relevant domains. There's clear advice on developing higher-order skills. The exercises are easy to do, and don't over-reach. Readers and training participants will likely achieve the desired outcomes and learning goals, and that's probably the author's desired goals.
This book does a great job at taking the beginning student through the world of EI Leadership Training, developing valuable perceptions and self-awareness, and enabling practice in many basic and a few higher order behavioral skills core to Emotional Intelligence. "
Not worth it.......2005-07-13
This book is more of a student workbook with high level general information. I would not recommend this book to anyone.
