      Book Description

First published in 1968, this classic work remains the basic reference book for collectors and fanciers of American spoons. Now offered in a new edition, it will be a welcome resource in your library. Spoons themselves originated in prehistoric times, when shells performed their function for the inhabitants of southern Europe, but spoons as commemorative items began with the Niagra Falls Suspension Bridge Spoon patented by Myron H. Kinsley in 1881. Soon their popularity spread as ideal mementos for practically every conceivable event, personage, or natural wonder. Ranging from expensive sterling silver sets to fifteen cent mailorder spoons, the variety of design, quality and interests reflected in this richly illustrated book is truly impressive.

                    Book Description

Clothing the body is one of the most complicated acts of daily existence. When a nun ponders red shoes, an architect knots his bowtie, a lesbian laces her Doc Marten's, or a nude model disrobes, each is engaging in a process of identity-making that is both intensely personal and deeply social. In an increasingly material world, negotiating dress codes is a nuanced art, informed by shifting patterns of power and authority, play and performance, as well as gender, sexuality, class, ethnicity and race.Drawing on ethnographic knowledge to connect theory and practice, authors reveal links between material culture, social and economic forces and personal performance -- from trade beads to Barbie, and from Taiwanese producer to Nike consumer -- to explain clothing choices through time and across cultures. Conventional understandings of the self, subject and society are shown to be inadequate when examining the interconnections of cultural and transnational economic systems of production and consumption that have a profound effect on human choice. Social climates in which dress accrues meaning are increasingly global climates, where women's bodies are commodified, gender categories are rigidly bound, and sweatshop labourers are slaves to boundless consumer appetite. This interdisciplinary book represents an important contribution to a fascinating and contested realm of human experience, and will be indispensable for anyone interested in the sociology, anthropology and psychology of fashion, cultural studies or the fashion industry.

                    Book Description

To millions of fans who read For Better or For Worse in the more than 2,000 newspapers in which it appears, the Patterson family is like their own family. Full of love and humor, the Canadian clan embodies the ups and downs of everyday family life: John and Elly facing the reality of being middle-aged; daughter Elizabeth becoming more independent on her own at college; son Michael secretly marrying his longtime love, Deanna; and daughter April learning how to deal with a bully. Every day, the strip expresses life at its most heartwarming and humorous. In Family Business, the Pattersons gather forces to buy and reorganize a toy store where Elly has worked for years. Through their efforts to clean out the basement, put a miniature train display in the front window, and add hobby supplies, the Pattersons learn even more about their relationships with each other. As Grandpa Jim tells April, "What, with the new business, John's model trains, Mike's love life, Elizabeth, and you . . . there's never a dull moment!"Over the years, Lynn Johnston has been lauded for her realistic portrayal of family life and for approaching serious subjects with honesty and compassion. Farley, the family dog, for example, died after heroically rescuing April in 1995. One of Michael's friends, Lawrence, came out of the closet as a gay person. Elly's father, Jim, moved in with the family after his wife died, and finally started dating again.Translated into eight other languages besides English, For Better or For Worse resonates with families around the world.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great book ..........2007-03-30

Another Great book to visit the Patterson's with. "For Better / For Worse" has to be one of the best comic strips of all time. It really makes you think, "They are just like my family", and if you do not have kids, read the books so you know what to prepare for.

3 out of 5 stars A Cartoon Guide To Leading A Perfect Life........2005-08-10

This cloying book is designed to soothe and nurture away your every worries and insecuries as you go through each stage of life from being born to growing up to mating to having children to growing old to finally waiting for the Grim Reaper, only that this comic strip really has nothing to do with real life, WHATEVER.

In this book, the parents magically obtain a popular toy shop with a basement chock full of rare treasures that would make the family instantly rich and reunited with their own rugrat days. Then there's the heroic princes and princesses. Handsome young Michael and his doe-eyed blonde princess, Deanna decide to secretly elope to escape an overbearing old Queen who wants to throw her little girl a huge, glamorous wedding ceremony. And, Prince Michael's childhood pal has fled an odorious existence with his cruel stepfather to build a fabulous gas-service world with his sweet wifesy and two precious little cherubs. Princess Elizabeth has finally left her nubile "Lolita" phrase and blossomed into a pretty, perfect young woman who coyly avoids every male's desiring clutches and parties forever with her perfect, colorful roommate. And Little Princess April continues to look and act like a precocious kindergartner with innocence and spunkiness oozing out her ears at age 10 and even outsmarts a big bad bully before she SAVES his life.

And the irony is that this comic strip had orginally started out as a SATIRE on the dewy-eyed world of family that "Family Circus" and "Hi & Lois" had built up during the Baby Boomer days. Today, I wouldn't even be surprised if a fire-breathing dragon suddenly appears out of the blue to snatch away Princess Elizabeth or one of Gordon's apple-cheeked tots.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant outlook of the family........2003-01-01

To me for better or for worse is sort of the story of my life. And it kind of is the story of everybodys life. The Patterson family resembles the modern family. There are some good moments and bad moments. There are surprising moments and boring moments. And like life on the outside world people age and people die. People get married and sometimes people have hardships. Lynn Johnston is a brilliant cartoonist. She captures true family life and captures the relationships of the familys with eachother, their friends and their pets. Over the course of the strip the family pet has passed away and a friend announced something personal, and people have got married. I definetly woould reccomend this.

These are a sweet collection of 4 different, nostalgic - nursery type animals: a "chick it out" [chick], a "wish you were hare"[bunny], "kitty letter"[kitty] & "hey there"[pony]. You get a total of 16 happy kitty bunny pony cards & envelopes and a sheet of stickers with various sayings/design [i.e.: "with love", "thinking of you",etc. The notes come in a little plastic, 2 snap closure case - with a picture of the pony on the front & a variety of the baby animals on the back. You could use the case for keeping "treasures", love notes ;-) etc in after you've used up all your notes. Lots of space to write on within the card. Bill Crawford takes you back to Sandler's childhood in a small New Hampshire Town, where his stand-up routines were always hits with his classmates but not necessarily the teachers! When Adam left his small town to take on the big city at New York University, it wasn't always easy, Sandler performed as a street musician crooning Springsteen songs to commuters, but he was destined to succeed. From his long friendship with then college classmate Tim Herlihy, who went on to co-write all Sandler's movies, to being discovered by Dennis Miller and eventually becoming America's funnyman, Bill Crawford looks behind the headlines and tabloid tales to shed new light on this decade's comedic darling.

Due to my fondness of Mr. Sandler I decided that I would read a biography on him. There were a handful of books written on this talented man, and I'm glad that I picked this one. Crawford here presents facts and stories about Adam Sandler and ties everything together to make a fun filled read that will be thoroughly enjoyed.

The book opens up with a bit on Sandler's family life and some basic biographical information, such as where he grew up and some information on his childhood. After this there are chapters on his "Saturday Night Live" career, his movies, his CD's, and a plethora of other things. Movies such as "Happy Gilmore" and "Billy Madison" are touched upon here. There are plot summaries and many stories about things on the makings of the movies, such as tid bits on the actors and actresses and things about the production. All of the CD recordings that Adam has done are summarized here and there is even some information on specific songs.

Bill Crawford does what a skilled author doing a biography should do. He makes facts fun and interesting to read. But even more inmportantly, though, is that he carefully writes about Adam as a person. He shares information about his family life and hos friends that were made over the years. There is also information here on Sandler's love interests as well. And behind all of the money and fame, Crawford writes how this actor really acts for the love of the art and to please his fans.

The writing in this biography is clear and easy to follow, making for a quick and informative read. This biography is not one that is long and drags, giving pointless information on frivolous things, this will deliver the important information on Mr. Sandler. At the end of this biography there is a complete bibliography and list of Adam's television appearances, movies made, and CD's recorded. This is one biography that will not disappoint.

                      Happy Reading!

As I play a Necron Army I use this book all the time. I agree with the above comments, However, you can buy a new Necron Codex with all the updated information for 2004 for $20 from Games workshop. These books are not collectors items, there is no reason to pay $27 for a two year old outdated book.

                          Book Description

Got Game shows how growing up immersed in video games has profoundly shaped the attitudes and abilities of this new generation

Though little-noticed, these ninety million rising professionals, through sheer numbers, will inevitably dominate business—and are already changing the rules. While many of these changes are positive—such as more open communication and creative problem-solving—they have caused a generation gap that frustrates gamers and the boomers who manage them.

Got Game identifies the distinct values and traits that define the gamer generation—from an increased appetite for risk to unexpected leadership skills—and reveals management techniques today’s leaders can use to bridge the generation gap and unleash gamers’ hidden potential.

                          1 out of 5 stars dishonest.......2007-08-05

It is profoundly dishonest to have published this book under a different title--with no warning in the book--than Got Game. It is the same book. This is simply an unethical publishing practice. Got Game was a good book and it is sad to see a business press and two authors engage in this level of deceit. It simply entices people to buy the book again, thinking it a new book--based on what was respect for the author previous work.

4 out of 5 stars Good insight into the younger generation.......2007-07-09

This book had me from the beginning with the Socrates quote. I really like how the authors broke the generation down to how they think. The authors are part of another generation (as I am) and the comparisons are right on the money. While the entire reason the young adults (those under 30) are the way they are cannot be attributed to video games (IMHO), it does account for a lot of their thought process. They talk about this generation's "acclimation to failure" - as in video games, when game is over, no problem - just start another game! If this generation seems arrogant, it is just their reality - they may over estimate their talents, but they will work to meet their expectations. To just name a few.
While I thought the book was good, it failed to be great for several reasons. One, the print seemed big - like they were trying to fill space. This thought was confirmed about 3/4 through the book, where it seemed they were repeating themselves. I recommend the book, but not as a stand alone. It is a good introduction and it appears to be backed by data. (All data was obtained by survey. Authors provide an appendix and bibliograpy.) If you want to know how the younger generation thinks - this is a great first book on the subject.

2 out of 5 stars Got Game- How to Sell A Book on Generalizations.......2007-02-26

Beck and Wade have decided that all business interactions can best be explained by grouping people into 2 groups and assigning one major attribute to them. Everyone over 35 didn't grow up with video games, and everyone under, did. Apparently, this makes the 2 groups as different as separate species and all business practices must revolve around some connection to games so that the "gamers" can successfully be integrated into business culture.

I question whether Beck and Wade actually MET any gamers while writing this book. Or tried to paly a video game themselves. While I admire their attempts to encourage the integration of new generational attitudes in the workplace, they still fall prey to stereotypes about games and gamers. pg 117- "Even though...games can privcde a lot of interaction with fellow humans, the depth of that interaction can only be called perfunctory." Their are thousands of Everquest and Second Life users that would completely disagree with that assessment.

Then there are the places where random attributes are attributed to video games. Pg 121 asserts that gamers are more likely to argue that connecting with the right people is the best way to get things done. Supposedly, this attitude comes from games, though the percentages for gamers and non-gamers are both quite high. And they're high because society constantly pushes the idea of connections and networking, not because of some attribute inherent only in video games.

Oh and I also enjoyed the twin assumptions repeated through the book that imply that because gamers are so busy gaming, they have no time for traditional social interactions such as group sports, and that somehow gamers spend more time in solitary activity (games) than the "boomers". First, just because one plays video games doesn't automatically mean one doesn't play sports, or isn't in the band or the science club or any other activity. Second, there are plenty of people of all generations who spent lots of time either watching tv or reading, also solitary activities. I bet lots of boomers spent as much time watching TV as GenX and GenY do in gaming. And we have better hand-eye coordination to show for it.

In general, no matter what statistic it is, the defining attribute is put down to video games. If boomers and GenX/Y responses differ, then it's because of video games. If boomers and GenX/Y responses are similar, the authors attribute it to experience on the part of the boomers and the artificial experience games have given GenX/Yers. It never occurs to the authors that maybe the responses are similar because people across generations feel the same about that issue. Nope, it MUST be the effect of video games.

I do agree with the authors that there are differences in generations that technology has created, but I don't think they are as pronounced as radical as the authors make them out to be. I also think the differences are more in the area of learning and assimilating info, not in inter-office social and teamwork relationships and issues of authority, which is where the authors put their emphasis. I think the concept was an intriguing one, but I completely disagree about the direction and scope of the author's views.

3 out of 5 stars Same text, different title.......2007-02-23

Maybe I just missed something major in the book description, but this is EXACTLY THE SAME TEXT as the authors' other book, "Got Game: how the gamer generation is reshaping business forever" - page for page, graph for graph- they're IDENTICAL. Talk about feeling stupid for buying both!

This book has been an "eye-opener" for our entire family. Our 14 year old grandson is a "Gamer" and we used to worry that he was wasting away his valuable growing years. We all read the book however, including our grandson, and now we can sit back and enjoy our "Gamer."
