Book Description
Best-selling author Debbie Bliss is back with a new collection of gorgeous knitwear designs for infants and toddlers--from sweaters and jackets to blankets, booties, and hats.
Customer Reviews:
Check pattern first.......2007-04-17
I consider myself a fairly skilled knitter, but the patterns I have done so far have their limits. First, the photos don't show much--though they are dang cute kids. Second, the patterns have (rare) charts, and are usually only written instructions. Couple that with many errors in the patterns, and it is difficult at times. Because you have no picture to go by with some of the design details, if the directions are not clear, you have to wing it or give up. Her web site does list error corrections, which helps, but should I have to do that? These are, in the words of Elizabeth Zimmerman, "blind follower" directions, that tell you down to every stitch what to do. It is not much for that rhythmic, meditative knitting--but it has its own appeal, and I come back to her instructions often. The trade-up for these inconvienences are stylish, extremely well -tailored knits. These finished sweaters are the ones that I use most for my own children. Her yarn is very nice and wears well. She only gives gauge over stockinette stitch, not over pattern, a confusing point another reviewer noted--the cable and moss stitch sweater is appropriate to size, because the cables eat up the extra width. I would recommend this book, but with the reservation that you need to spend some time plotting out the knit beforehand, and you need to buy her yarn to get the best end result.
Good book for knitting baby sweaters!.......2006-03-28
Well use of yarn (Debbie Bliss) to make the final sweater look high quality and attractive on the babies in the photos.
One small weakness -Hard for reader to see the complete sweater pattern without a drawing of the front and back of the sweater pattern in the book. Phots not showing all areas of the sweater.
Other than that, sweaters look great and not hard to knit!
A variety of classic-looking projects.......2004-08-19
I really admire that this book doesn't try to cram in a "how to knit" chapter in the very beginning. Those hurried instructions never do justice to someone who's never knitted. Therefore, don't buy this book hoping that it will contain a chapter teaching you how to knit, because it doesn't. After two pages devoted to general knitting considerations, the patterns begin. Unlike Debbie Bliss's "Quick baby knits", which features mainly long-sleeved sweaters, this book has a variety of projects including hats, a scarf, blankets, a vest, sweaters (of course), pants, booties, a stuffed toy, three little dresses, and a little bag. Patterns look simple, classic, elegant, not too gaudy, and the skills used include cables, Fair Isle, beads, stripes, and embroidery. My impression of the projects is that they are for an intermediate knitter. Items presented are for newborn-3 year olds, and most can be used for either boys or girls.
Recycled.......2004-06-09
She does beautiful baby clothes, traditional and delicate. But the pictures are more enchanting than the garments themselves. They are recycled, a habit with her. I love the pictures, but maybe I should frame and hang them instead of try to make them. It seems to me she should stop putting out books with overly similar patterns and fix the issues she's having with her instructions.
Cute, quick gifts.......2004-05-27
The patterns are adorable, fairly easy and quick to knit. I've found this book quite handy as many of my friends are expecting first, second and third babies!

Customer Reviews:
Honest and Refreshing.......2005-02-11
Rhea, who writes a monthly humor column for HomeLife magazine, is a gifted communicator with an uncanny ability to find spiritual application in the "dailyness" of motherhood. Whether she's worrying about her wrinkles or pondering the mysteries of life (where socks go when they leave the dryer, who put the grilled cheese in the VCR), Rhea manages to find God--and point readers to Him, too--in the midst of the questions. Her honesty and quirky sense of humor are refreshing.
Dena Dyer, author of "Grace for the Race: Meditations for Busy Moms"
A Blessing for All.......2003-04-21
This book has been a joy for me. It is amazing how Rhonda Rhea can have insight into my life. What a comforting feeling to know that as a Mom, I am not alone, that we all experience great triumphs and the occasional sorrow. That life doesn't always flow as we think it should but Mrs. Rhea reminds us that it is God's way...not our's that matters. Within every life experience is a spiritual lesson and blessing. She helps us find humor in our daily journeys through motherhood. I find myself rereading sections...as a reminder...God is Good and has a sense of humor, so we must too.
Learning followed laughter.......2003-04-01
Now here's a book with a sense of humor. But I found that after I got through laughing, I reflected on the blessings I have with my own family and the opportunities I have to make a difference in the world by making a difference in my home.

Book Description
Over three years after cofounder Jerry Garcia's death, the Grateful Dead continues to be one of the world's most popular rock bands. While much has been written about the group over the last three decades, the tales behind the Grateful Dead's songs have never been fully examined. This book takes a song-by-song look at this legendary band. Find out what historical incidents and characters led to such classics as "New Speedway Boogie," "Truckin'," and "Casey Jones." Because not all Grateful Dead tunes appeared on their studio albums, this volume also includes a chapter with fan favorites the band played but never officially released, including "Looks Like Rain," "Lazy Lightning," and "Mexicali Blues."
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful.......2001-08-06
If you enjoy the Dead you'll enjoy the stories behind the songs. There is nothing superficial about what Peter's writes. You'll thoroughly enjoy this book.
The Grateful Dead's Menu of Songs: Deep Roots.......2000-07-01
Pete Townsend of The Who, after playing on the same bill with the Dead at a two-day festival, made an observation that partially sums up the very existence of those known as "Deadheads". He said "They played two 3-hour sets and didn't repeat a song; we played the same set we've been doing for the last 6 years". The Dead had a hefty catalog of songs (of course, they also performed excellent cover versions of others' tunes). This book is a fan's dream because it is a compilation of original songs with historical/anecdotal/interpretive background information on each selection. As any appreciator of the band knows, Jerry Garcia collaborated with poet/songwriter Robert Hunter on the majority of Dead originals; Hunter keeps company with the likes of Bob Dylan in anybody's list of great American rock pen-wielders.Dead guitarist Bob Weir wrote many songs performed by the band with long-time friend and cyber-genius John Barlowe. The beauty of Grateful Dead songs is their double-edged nature; yes, "Casey Jones" is based on a real train conductor and a real train wreck (Americana!), but the writers weave their own experience and ambiguous view of life into the song.Simply stated, the songs are deceptively DEEP - deep in meaning and deep in the soil of the American experience. Don't look for this book to explain what every song meant (that's for you to ponder, Hunter would say). However, there is invaluable and often just fun background (i.e.the Altamont tragedy and "New Speedway Boogie"; the staccato rhythmn of "The Greatest Story Ever Told" being loosely based on the sound made by a pump on Mickey Hart's ranch). Pick this book up, even if you only have a few minutes, turn to any page, and be enlightened and entertained.
Customer Reviews:
It has indeed..........2006-01-13
It's kind of funny about how I never really identified with the hippies and the counter-culture when all this was going on. I was more inclined to believe the "establishment" version. Now, after all these years, I see that the counter-culture was more often right, or at least on the right track, than not. They tried to warn us- now look at the world....
The author starts out with a brief nod to the bohemians and beats before moving onto flower power, acid tests, and the Summer of Love. He points out that it is really the same sort of people involved. All through history you had your outsiders that chose to go furthur: philosophers, poets, artists, yogins, hermits, hippies, gypsies, magicians, shamans. It was just that in the sixties the Spirit infused itself into a large part of a generation and didn't have to confine itself to a bohemian underground. It even dared to expose the truth about the surrounding society- and suggest that things could be different. It looked for a time that things might really change for the better- and then corporate power struck back with a sledgehammer....
For an admitted pot smoker the author has written a well-organised and detailed account stretching well into the Reagan-counterrevolution. I see nothing too paranoid here. Indeed, just about all these claims have been verified to my satisfaction over the years. But, as the author points out, no one really cares anymore. The corporations are more powerful, greedy, and destructive than ever- and those Lost Angels that sense the truth are once again driven underground and to the fringes....
A Long Strange trip Traveled In One Night.......2001-08-07
I borrowed a copy of this book from a friend of mine about a year ago and ended up reading this book from front to back in one sitting. It details many of the shady tactits used by the US gov't in the 60's to disinform and whitewash the American counter-culture(i.e. hippies, and beatniks) of it's dirty dealing here and abroad. Needless to say, after staying up all night and finishing this book I was slightly paranoid for a short while and forever interested in the undert-belly of this nation of ours. the book was very thought-provoking and deserves a place in any fledgling conspiracy theorist's bookshelf as a jumping on point.

Good coffee table book.......2000-04-04
Read it for nostalgia or read it for enlightenment. A collection of major articles published in Rolling Stone between 1965 and 1987. Several are interviews, including Keith Moon, John Lennon, Mick Jagger, Sting, Bob Dylan, and Jack Nicholson. Then there are the "following the celebrity around for a day" pieces, and the political and social commentary, including that of Hunter S. Thompson. It's just a survey of Rolling Stone-ness for 20 years. Excellent journalism, and that goes for the substantial collection of photos here too.

Book Description
In 1972, Kelley Culver was a newly married college dropout with few, if any, good prospects. Hoping to avoid the draft and Vietnam, which seemed the most likely course his life would take, Kelley enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. What started out as a short-term goal became a 23-year career. This book recounts many of the events that helped shape his career. From his beginnings as an Air Force airman, Kelley advances through the ranks to eventually retire as a major. Along the way, he finds himself in situations that are often funny, sometimes dark, but always realistic. A career that included service as an emergency room technician, nuclear missile operations officer, and commander of a squadron during Desert Shield/Storm, Kelley's story is full of interesting people and unexpected opportunities and shows that, with a little confidence in yourself, you can accomplish much more than you ever imagined.
Customer Reviews:
FOR COMPLETISTS ONLY.......2000-08-09
Not as bad as an obvious cash-in like the dreadful book "The Wisdom of Jerry Garica," but not much better. As an audio documentary it's pretty poor. Phil Lesh's last name is pronounced "Leash", the author/reader claims that Keith and Donna Godchaux were replaced by Lowell George, etc., etc. A few good nuggets of information for the uninitiated, but a waste otherwise. The two stars are for the snippets of interviews with Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, and Paul McCartney who talks a bit about the Grateful Dead. Demerit points for a way-too-long interview from a barely coherent random Deadhead. Get this if you need everthing, otherwise don't waste your money.
Book Description
`Chess is 99% tactics' is an old saying. This may be an exaggeration, but even the remaining 1% still depends on tactics. When Martin Weteschnik started working as a trainer in his local chess club, he quickly realized that even the stronger club players had great weaknesses in their tactical play. He also discovered that simply asking them to solve a huge number of puzzles did not fix the problem. These players clearly needed a good book, but when Weteschnik looked for it he found nothing suitable, so he decided to write it himself. But Weteschnik was not completely satisfied with the book and decided to restructure and rewrite it completely.
Customer Reviews:
excellent!.......2007-09-22
This is a gem. Its strengths are the highly interesting examples and its ability to improve your board vision. No chessboard or computer needed.
Good intention, but very few exercises. .......2007-09-22
Were not too few exercises I would give this book 5 stars. From the content of the book, Martin Weteschnik had in fact pay a lot of effort trying to teach us tactics. But unfortunately he forgot the proverb " practice makes perfect. " Just 4 exercise per chapter is not enough!!! I think any kind of this book should include at least 200 exercises, may not need to be from real games, but it should gives us more practice. May be in the second edition of this book, Martin Weteschnik can give us more examples. So for those one who has finished reading this book, they should buy, John Nunn's Learn Chess Tactics, another two books is one from Lev Alburt's pocket book for traing and most of all, " Sharpen your tactics, " in this book you would find 1125 ground - breathing exercises. ( Though I would say in fact most and not all 1125 exercise are all that exciting ).
Very good book..One complaint.......2007-09-18
This is a very good book. I've read MANY books on tactics, and have done countless drills and puzzles. This book is unique, however, because it made me look at tactics from a real game perspective. it didn't just say "find the pin", but it showed how to look through the clutter of the board and find all the elements that constitue a pin, and even how to create one where none exist. The one complaint I have is with the diagrams. they never indicate who's move it is, therefore, it doesn't give me the chance to see if i can find the tactic before he lists the candidate move. Otherwise, it is very helpful and enjoyable.
Great tactics book!.......2007-09-13
I found this book great in a way that explains and classifies group of different type of tactics clearly and short. It focus exactly on the motif. Visual explanations. It is a book that you can read on a train going to work.
Outstanding explanations!.......2007-08-01
In the last few years there has been an abundance of chess books in the market, and even though a large portion of those are related to openings, there has been a fair share of tactics books too. The typical recipe is to group the examples by tactical motifs and challenge the reader to solve them.
At first glance, it seems that Weteschnik follows the same pattern, but this could not be farther from the truth. The author dissects each example using clear diagrams to explain the ideas behind each combination. This is not only helpful for understanding the example better, but also for being able to find combinations in your own games. Knowing when to look for certain motifs is one of the most important factors in finding combinations when you do not have the caption "White to play and win" below the board. If nothing else, after reading this book you will feel that your creativity has soared, and that is the result of knowing just what to look for.
The book has a wide range of examples in terms of difficulty, but the clever use of diagrams allows the reader to go through it without the use of a chessboard. Don't get me wrong, doing this will require hard work, but the rewards will be immense.
I am looking forward to seeing more books from this great new author!

The Encyclopedia of Business Letters, Fax Memos, and E-Mail.......2001-04-22
Exceptional Book, full credit to the Author, this is the best book I have come across, I will recommend this to everyday Jo bloggs user like myself who were struggling to right decent letters.
Little guidance.......2001-04-13
This was very basic and had few examples to choose from when trying to form a letter. What little guidance received was common knowledge. This is best suited for high school students.
This Is An Indispensable Business Writing Guide!.......1999-09-13
The use of Internet technology has made the effective communication of thoughts and ideas in a variety of formats and styles possible. Good Website design alone, however, does not assure that one's intended business message will get across as well as planned and hoped for. Good writing and presentation skills are also important factors to consider in the overall communication process.
Robert Bly has written The Encyclopedia of Business Letters, Fax Memos, and E-Mail to assist people to create a variety of important business correspondence that can be put to use in the office and online. Bly, the author of The Copywriter's Handbook, offers his readers some quick solutions to meeting many practical business correspondence needs. He provides plenty of samples throughout the book that cover a broad range of business needs, including correspondence with colleagues, vendors, employees and employers, customers, handling complaints and requests, making collections, and producing sales and direct marketing letters.
Readers will be impressed with the ease with which they can learn to create their own business letters. Following the guiding principles, samples, and instruction in this book will result in generating favorable responses in making sales, marketing products and services, issuing warnings for poor worker performance, making the firing of people much easier to accomplish (gulp!), terminating services, apologizing for poor performance, and many other tough real-life circumstances they are likely to face in the business world someday!
Bly offers some very helpful tips on customizing letters to meet specific circumstances such as time-sensitive communications, varying message tone, generating favorable responses with creative wording, and preparing correspondence intended for faxing and e-mailing. Bly cautions his readers by reminding them that once someone sends an electronic communication there may be no way to stop it from reaching its destination. Watch your words and emotions!
Readers will learn how to produce many top-notch communications for any purpose, including office correspondence, faxes, e-mail, newsgroups, and Website design use. This book will assist business people of all levels of experience to get any message across much easier with more confidence! This is an indispensable business writing guide. Look good in print and online! Highly recommended for novice business owners!
