The Comics Before 1945
ASIN: 1556706464 |
Amazon.com
One line in this beautiful coffee-table book on early comic-strip artists, America's Great Comic-Strip Artists, stands out: "Although George Herriman is the most celebrated comic-strip artist of all time--and by common agreement the greatest--his best-known strip, Krazy Kat, has been praised by people who have never seen it." While many people may be familiar with the featured artists or with their work (Little Nemo, Popeye, Dick Tracy, Peanuts), the wealth of artistry in America's comics pioneers is something not to be overlooked. To examine the illustrations that begin each chapter--details of each artist's work enlarged so that you can see the grain of the paper and the dot patterns of color--is to be in awe of these graphic art masters. Richard Marschall's loving history begs to be visited again and again.
Book Description
In 1940, DC Comics created the concept of the super-team by bringing together Green Lantern, Hawkman, Wonder Woman, and many others to battle powers that threatened the entire world.
Customer Reviews:
Great for collectors, must be enjoyed within context of its time.......2006-07-07
Admittedly, I was a tad disappointed in this collection - but I was probably still thinking a bit too modern. These tales are from the early 1940's (and I was envisioning something more like the reprints from the 1950's that I'd read as a kid). The artwork is a bit more crude, the dialog & stories are definitely vintage. I suppose my biggest disappointment was that its not really a "team" book - the characters only get together at the "board meeting" in the beginning of each tale and then again at the "return meeting" at the end of the tale. In the middle, its all separate little stories, each featuring one hero in their own little bit. Don't expect any big "team" battles with all the characters fighting together.
But all that said, if you're a comics fan, and especially if you're a collector, then all of these "Archive Editions" are a great deal! Much less expensive than buying the originals (and a darn sight sturdier than a 60-year old comic printed on cheap paper would be)! Yes, it was a different time back then, and these stories are as much a look back at those times in general as they are a look back at super heroes in the "golden Age" of comics.
By the way, I bought my copy through one of Amazon's used book sellers and thus got an even better deal on it.
Awe inspiring.......2004-08-04
Quite simply the best way to live in the Golden Age of comics. These comics would cost you thousands to buy, but here you can read them for a fraction of that. The art, crude by todays standards. Storylines, simple, but you have to remember when and where the comics come from. If you are a comicbook lover like I am, these are a must have.

So what do you expect from a celebrity autobiography? Tales of an impoverished childhood and an unappreciated early career? Angst-ridden revelation? In Jay Leno's take on the genre, tales have only one purpose--laughs. This is a book of jokey anecdotes and humorous stories marking the comedian's progress to the top. The persona of the young Leno is not so different and just as likable as the one appearing nightly on television. Whether it is his mother's advice, his teachers' complaints, or the awkward situations he finds himself in (for example, standing before an Orthodox Jewish audience who have been mistakenly led to expect a Yiddish storyteller) Leno always sees the funny side.
Book Description
The king of late-night television and America's hardest-working comedian delivers the monologue of his life.
Against the odds Jay Leno has emerged as the undisputed king of late night television as host of the # 1 -rated The Tonight Show. His twenty-year stand-up career; working alongside the likes of Jerry Seinfeld, Carry Shandling, and David Letterman, was a long, hard, and laugh-filled battle to the top. In this entertaining, anecdote-filled book, Leno delivers the monologue of his life, leaving readers admiring his unstoppable wit and tenacity.
Customer Reviews:
My Favorite in the Genre.......2007-06-08
As a comedian starting the biz in 1990 myself, I enjoy reading these comedian autobiographies. It is very interesting to see how different the industry was back when some of these guys, who paved the path for the rest of us, started. I've always heard great things about Leno, that he is the hardest working guy in show business and one of the friendliest guys in the industry. He is supposedly very supportive and I know he did a free show every year at Zanies in Chicago for all unemployed people, who showed their unemployment checks to get in.
The book tells some of the best stories I've heard of coming up in the business. Leno started back when there weren't comedy clubs, more playboy rooms and strip clubs. He was one of the first club regulars and no doubt his skill, along with the others at that time, helped make the comedy club scene big. (Although I've heard criticisms about his Tonight Show monologues, Jay is known in the industry to have been one of the most talented comedians ever back when he was touring regularly.)
Jay recalls episodes of his life in an easy-to-read style and isn't afraid to tell stories revealing his strong respect and love for his parents. My favorite story wasn't a funny one at all; it was the one where Jay got his first car, even a passion back then, spent lots of time and money to get it all fixed up and was sitting in his high school classroom, staring out the window at impending sudden doom of rain, looking at his convertabile with the top down. He couldn't get to it. Suddenly, his parents drove up and... you'll have to read the book for the rest of the story.
It's also really cool to read about the other up and comers Jay came in contact with in his early years, as well as those who didn't make it or passed before their time. Among them are Jerry Seinfeld and Robin Williams. A fun, quick read for anyone who enjoys standup comedy or wants to read about a grateful star, of which there is a great shortage of today.
FUNNIEST BOOK IN THE UNIVERSE!.......2006-06-08
I have read this book at least THREE times. I've given it to almost everyone I know. I gave it to my nephew when he was 14. One day, we saw him shaking and crying on his bed. When I asked what was wrong, he rolled over and handed me this book!!!! He couldn't even speak, he just pointed to the part he wanted me to read. It is soooo funny. Whenever my mother feels down, she just opens it up to any page and it cheers her up. If I ever met Jay, I'd tell him this is my favorite book. I made the mistake of taking it when I was waiting to see if I would be picked for jury duty. I kept laughing out loud and everyone kept looking at me. It really is funny. I don't know if his life was this funny, or if he left out most of the bad stuff, but if you have ANY sense of humor at all, GET THIS BOOK!
Hilarious Tale of Jay's Rise.......2006-02-14
Jay Leno has been entertaining the world as host of The Tonight Show every weeknight for over 13 years. His monologues covering current events are consistently funny. But his rise to this pinnacle did not come overnight. In fact, all the way up to his surprise crowning (over David Letterman) as the replacement for the retiring Johnny Carson in 1992, he was still known for little more than being a respected stand-up comedy veteran who had gained an extra reputation as a solid guest host for the show when Johnny was on vacation, as well as for his funny visits to (former) good friend Letterman's Late Night program that followed Carson.
This autobiography tells in hilarious detail, through a series of anecdotal episodes, how he struggled for years to make it in show business. From humble beginnings as the son of Italian/Scottish immigrants in Boston, through experiences with various shady characters on the mean streets of Boston, New York, LA and other places- agents, club owners, hippies, mobsters, strippers, prostitutes, johns, hustlers, rednecks and con men of every stripe- as well as discrimination in LA-LA land against his trademark chin-strong image- Leno shows how perseverence and hard work can succeed in the end, and how his desire to make people laugh kept him driven to make it, despite the odds and endless obstacles.
There is also a bit of a stand-up comedy history interwoven in the narrative, describing the rise of comedy clubs like The Comedy Store and The Improv during the 70s and the concurrent rise (and sometimes fall) of Jay's contemporaries like Letterman, Richard Lewis, Freddie Prinze, Jimmie Walker, Andy Kaufman and others.
The book winds down with the story of how he met and bonded with his wife Mavis, his ascension to the peak of the late night talk show mountain, and a touching dedication to his deceased parents. The laughs don't come quite as often, but it is a good way to finish off the tale.
Whether or not all of these occasionally hard-to-believe stories are the whole truth is moot- it's all a riot, and will have you rolling.
His personal stand-up comes through.......2004-11-23
I love Jay Leno. I've always found Letterman a bit too smug and self-consciously hip--except for moments with his mom and the Top Ten Lists. And for critics who derided Jay Leno's championing of Schwarzenegger, Jay, a dyslexic, has a tendency to promote the guy everyone else laughs at (and who Jay laughs at too, but never mean-spirited).
There's plenty of comedy here but what I find most touching is Jay's courtship with his wife Mavis, his relationship with his Italian father and Scottish mother, and the loving way he chronicles his parents' eccentricities. This is the same spirit in which he memorialized his father and mother on-air. Jay Leno truly is Mr. Nice Guy.
Hilarious, incredible, great book.......2004-06-29
Since buying this book I re-read it almost every other week, and I still laugh hard at all those stories. A collection of incredibly hilarious stories of Jay Leno's life. Many of them hardly believable and probably exaggerated, but still hilarious as hell.
The book also provides a great opportunity for learning about other comedians of his age that younger generation may not heave heard about, such as Andy Kaufman and Freddy Prinze, not to mention legends such as Johnny Carson and Merv Grifin.
I learned from this book that contrary to popular belief, most of the successes in the entertainment field have been achieved through hard work, not pur chance-of-a-life-time or being-at-right-time-at-right-moment. But Seinfeld and Leno are proofs that just "being funny" is not sufficient to become a successful comedian. Boy, how hard working Jay Leno was in all those years.
Strongly Recommended.

When film critic Jami Bernard thinks about the kinds of movies that appeal to women, she doesn't always follow the common route. Sure, such classic weepies as Now, Voyager, Brief Encounter, and Waterloo Bridge are included in this guide, as are more modern chick flicks like Working Girl, Sense and Sensibility, and The American President. But Bernard also believes that female audiences have a wilder side that the cinema can unleash. Her defenses of The Hunger, True Lies, and 9 1/2 Weeks as "chick flicks" are intriguing, particularly since these movies were designed to entrance aggressively misogynist men. Bernard covers 75 films in detail, categorizing them under headings like "impossible love," "hunks," "emotional rescue," "catfights," "funny girls," and, of course, "female bonding." --Raphael Shargel
Customer Reviews:
hold the popcorn while I grab a tissue.......2001-03-16
New York Daily News film critic Jami Bernard says there are Guy Movies and there are Chick Flicks. Guy Movies are those with little dialogue and lots of action - punching, explosions, aliens, car chases or sex. Chick Flicks tend to have more dialogue and less action. Bernard claims women prefer romances, tearjerkers, relationship movies - female stars, familial situations, cuteguys, emotional catharsis. The 75 films Bernard catalogues here provide a range of genres, wide enough to override the stereotypical view that the label Chick implies. The usual match for Guy is Gal so Bernard's choice of the more sexist Chick can either be seen as deconstructive or an acceptance of semantic subjugation. (That "chick" is derived from Chicken, the male hen is evidence of the twisted logic of slang. And Gal has a subtle gay association). Bernard's chapters make genre choices - Tearjerkers, Emotional Rescue, Bad Girls, Hunks, Role Models, Impossible Love, Funny Girls, Schoolgirl Crushes, Catfights, Daddy Dearest, Hurts So Good, Lesbian Inclinations, Female Bonding, The Maternal Instinct, and Perfect Love - and while some of the choices of films are obvious and rather hackneyed, others are surprising. We get Casablanca, Gone With The Wind and Sabrina, but also A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Gaslight, The Bad Seed, and To Sir With Love. The anaylsis of each film tends to concentragte more on plot rather than assess performance or any technical ability, but occasionally Bernard throws in some behind the scenes information. When someone includes The Bridges of Madison Country and fails to comment on how excruciatingly dull it is, you can pick the agenda. In Bernard's pages on Gilda she points out the homosexual subtext, resulting in Glenn Ford's righteous humiliation of the beautiful Rita Hayworth, but then tells of Hayworth's real life transformation from Margarita Cansino which required electrolysis to raise her "feral" hairline. And titles like The Women, All About Eve, American Gigolo, Johnny Guitar, Now Voyager, and even Picnic have such a strong appeal to male gay audiences that it's odd that Bernard fails to comment on it, though the distinction between a straight female and a gay male sensibility opens up a Pandora's Box of politics, which perhaps Bernard is wise to avoid. Some choices like 9 ½ weeks show how Bernard is willing to look at the way women can be portayed unattractively, though it may be a stretch to imagine this title being a repeat rental. And since Bernard is a film critic, claiming that having to sit through everything reinforces her personal preferences and also gives her access to a range of movies, provides us with some enlightened historical and foreign choices. Bernard's writing is very accessible in tone, sometimes a little lowbrow, and her humour of-the not-too-subtle kind, but her book is a pleasant experience and good enough to lead the reader back to the video/dvd shop.

Try Again Next Time.......2004-06-08
Borrring. I felt as if I were reading a college term paper written at an 11th grade level. I don't mean to be so harsh but getting through this book was like sitting through a root canal. There just is not enough here to hold one's interest. There is nothing about his personal life and by the time I got through three excrusiating chapters, I was definately done. After reading other biographies and autobiographies of musicians, I feel that this book did not help me to understand Curtis Mayfield or his music. After reading it, I felt very empty. Don't waste your time.
Don't get too ready to read this.......2003-12-17
With such a beautiful cover and such a career to discuss, I was very exicted about reading this book. But OH MY GOD it was painful. I'm sorry Mr Burns, but I don't care what your personal feelings are about Curtis.. I wanted to read about Curtis' life.. what he went through, how he came to write such beautiful music - but instead you give track by track detail of every album - and thats it. Here's hoping someone can write an interesting book about such an inspirational man.
curtis mayfield-another discography?.......2003-08-08
Pete Burns is obviously a fan but wouldnt it be great if we got a real biography of Curtis? This book is a very comprehensive list of his many record releases and collaborations but true feelings about the man are almost absent. Brief interview details are included but the need really is for more-anyone please?

In Depth Coverage.......2006-11-05
This is a must read for all who feel the need to learn about these important investment vehicles. The writing is stellar and easily understood, even on such ideas as futures, hedging, and more difficult concepts like the yield rate curve.
Mr. Veale is an excellent writer and deals with the common and uncommon uses of these vehicles. You will understand how to read any kind of quote, from stock to bond to esoteric qoutes like T-Bill spreads and ED futures.
I usually sell books like this once I have absorbed the knowledge, however this is a keeper since it will be an important reference for well into the future.
For the beginner, do not look elsewhere, this is superb........2006-02-16
I am making the transition from hard sciences to financial markets. I have started reading many math oriented books on quantitative finance, like the great two volumes by Shreve, but guess what, I still could not understand a Bloomberg article or a report on the radio, all these market terms were a mystery to me. Not anymore. This book did it for me. It requires ZERO financial knowledge and yet it is not for dummies. It is perfect for the level of someone who never had a formal training on what is the definition of a stock, what kind of departments exist inside an investment bank, etc. etc.
It is a clear book, I would not call it technical, it reads like a novell, and I can not overstate any more how cleat it is. I definitely recommend it to people who want an introduction on the subject.
a great introduction to investing concepts.......2002-08-08
I have to point out that I have the first edition of this book (which did not have Veale's name on it). It is absolutely excellent at introducing the basic concepts behind all types of securities and futures investing one may be considering. They cover what stocks, bonds, etc. are, how they are traded, the terminology used by brokers, and even some historical background. I was really impressed at how clear and understandable all the explanations were. This book was written by someone who really understands the concepts and knows how to explain them well.
The book does not have a glossary in it, but does have an excellent index, which is really better in many ways.
Simply wonderful!.......2001-01-09
Great book. Complex concepts are explained clearly and concisely. Examples are abundant and helpful.

Average primer but badly needs an update.......1999-08-29
For the average newcomer to investing this is an OK book, but it does focus alot on subjects you probably do not need to know unless you plan on working for a brokerage firm. It does give good descriptions and examples of all the security instruments (stocks, bonds, options, futures, etc.) but it accounts for only about 50% of the book. The rest is in my opinion redundant to the lay-person and is in places woefully out of date (especially the taxation section). If updated, I would rate this a 4, but given the age of the text, I would recommend looking elsewhere for an introduction to financial markets.
Superior intro to financial terms, processes, & instruments.......1998-08-03
If you're new to the financial world and want to understand the lingo, terrain, and equipment of pure capitalism, this book is for you. Don't let the 1991 publication date fool you. Aside from some out-of-date tax information in a later chapter, this book packs an amazing amount of useful financial clues and explanations. One of the strongest features of this text is its use of examples. Whether it's options, futures, or IPOs, the authors provide number-based scenarios to guide the reader towards understanding. This book will not excite you or show how to make $2 million in the stock market. It will help you understand many of the financial instruments which comprise capitalism.

Read the book online.......2004-04-24
Hello,
Robert Hashemian here, author of the book. Obviously you can ignore my own rating for the book. No surprise that I think it's a pretty good book.
You can also read this book online at www.hashemian.com and decide for yourself.
Learned much.......2002-01-18
This was the second book I read on financial markets. There is a wealth of information on all kinds of financial stuff.
I specially liked the Options chapter. I think the Stocks chapter was an overkill but still there was much useful info.
Pretty organized and fairly unbiased. The retirement piece at the end of the book was definitely underdone but I don't think this book was meant to cover retirement anyways.
The author doesn't try to portray the financial markets as a road to riches. He lets the reader draw his own conclusions from the topics covered. An educational read overall.
A must read for anyone with money.......2001-12-28
I learned a great deal from this book and I can tell you it is worth every cent of its price, which I considered high before purchasing. The author has a very creative style and yet is able to explain even the most complicated information in an easy to understand and often humorous way. Even if you don't think you will take advantage of all the knowledge you will gain from reading it, I suggest you do read it all, as you never know what may prove useful in the future.
