    Book Description

Here's a little treat out of the attic. This may be today's penultimate guide for researching and pricing popular chairs from the past. This guide has hundreds of detailed illustrations of American wooden chairs ranging from golden oak to the Viennese-style bentwood. These chairs that furnished the nation's best-dressed homes at the turn of the century. An actual reprint of the detailed catalogue of the Phoenix Chair Company, each page is a careful reproduction of the Sheboygan, Wisconsin, company's own 1907-1908 list of wares for dealers. This time, however, it has current values for these treasured antiques. There is no more-authoritative guide to the chairs produced by this company, which helped set the styles that furnished a nation.

5 out of 5 stars The Confession from Asuka-kun.......2002-08-19

One of THE BEST volumes of Saint Tail.... THE BEST!!! Asuka Jr. confesses at the end to Meimi that he loves her! Such a great scene.... After his encounter with Saint Tail, he sits alone on a bridge thinking about Meimi. He remembers something Sawatari said to him... There's a treasure at the end of the rainbow. He sits through the pouring rain, staying out all night, and finally he realizes he would be late for school, so he chases the rainbow for some reason, and finds Meimi. He then colapses on her, then confessing his love... Such an amazing part of the book...
This is absoutely one of the best that I have read by Megumi Tachikawa, and you MUST buy this and experience it for yourself!!!

Friends and foes alike recognize that Bob Dole is one of the funniest men in American politics, and Great Presidential Wit is an excellent collection of wit and wisdom drawn from public life. It reads much like Dole's previous book, Great Political Wit, even if it has a narrower focus. Dole begins by ranking every president on a humor scale, and in doing so, he makes an interesting point: "At the top of the heap ... I place Abraham Lincoln, Ronald Reagan, and the two Roosevelts. By most accounts they are also among the most effective chief executives. Coincidence? I don't think so." (At the bottom of the heap is Millard Fillmore. Writes Dole: "Don't get me wrong. Fillmore's been good for many a chuckle over the years. It's just that most of the laughter has come at his expense.")

Dole frankly assesses each president for his wit: "Now comes the part sure to keep this book out of several presidential birthplace gift shops," he deadpans. Here he is on John Adams: "Often cranky and full of insults--an eighteenth century Don Rickles." On George Washington: "First in peace, first in war, but middle of the pack when it came to humor." On Richard Nixon: "Those weren't jokes that were deleted from the Watergate tapes."

The bulk of Great Presidential Wit, however, is a collection of jokes and humorous stories. Sometimes they are old-fashioned knee-slappers. When Stephen A. Douglas called Lincoln two-faced, Lincoln asked the audience, "I leave it to you. If I had another face, do you think I would wear this one?" Sometimes they have a deeper meaning. "It has been my experience," said Lincoln on another occasion, "that folks who have no vices generally have very few virtues." Ronald Reagan fills up quite a few pages: "An economist is someone who sees something happen in practice and wonders if it'd work in theory," he once said. Calvin Coolidge, one of the most underrated presidents, turns out to be one of the best at combining wisdom and humor: "Perhaps one of the most important accomplishments of my administration has been minding my own business." Here's John F. Kennedy answering a reporter's question about how he became a war hero aboard PT 109: "It was absolutely involuntary. They sank my boat." Bill Clinton delivered this howler in 1995, on (humorous) ways the government can save money: "Combining the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms with both the Bureau of Fisheries and the Interstate Trucking Commission. We're going to call it the Department of Guys." Great Presidential Wit is a joy to read or browse, and highly recommended for anyone who likes politics served with a dash of humor. --John J. Miller

      Book Description

Famous for his deadpan humor, New York Times bestselling author Senator Bob Dole here brings us his favorite witticisms and hilarious remarks of this country's commanders in chief. Great Presidential Wit collects the former senator's favorite funny stories and remarks by and about American presidents -- from George Washington to George W. Bush. Senator Dole tackles the assignment of ranking the presidents from the funniest (Abraham Lincoln) to the least funny (Millard Fillmore), and everyone in between. With chapters cleverly organized according to the senator's own opinions -- from "A Class by Themselves" (Lincoln, Reagan, the Roosevelts) and "Yankee Wits" (Coolidge, Kennedy) to "The Joke's on Them" (Taylor, Harding, Van Buren, Buchanan, the Harrisons, Pierce, Fillmore) -- Great Presidential Wit is the perfect antidote to the long political season and a patriotic reminder that our leaders are human and often witty and amusing.

4 out of 5 stars Wit and humor from our presidents........2005-04-12

Indeed I wish Bob Dole was in this book, instead of reporting on the wit and humor of the highest office's previous occupants. I believe humor and the ability to laugh at yourself is a great asset with any person in high office. When Dole lost in 1996, he stated he slept like a baby....he cried all night.
The book is structured on rating the president's ability to crack jokes. Many people believe that Lincoln and FDR had great wits. Dole states the many unknowns such as Coolidge's jokes about his silence. Some of our underrated Presidents had great wits.
This is a nice little humorous read. If the reader needs an uplift, this is a great book to begin with.

4 out of 5 stars Anecdotes and witticisms that add a human touch.......2003-12-09

After the success of "Great Political Wit", Senator Dole followed up with this book. It is a book full of witty sayings of and anecdotes about our Presidents. He has grouped the Presidents from the wittiest descending to the point of having good stories about those Presidents that weren't particularly funny. Mr. Dole even provides his own ranking of the Presidents as wits from #1 - Lincoln down to #41 - poor Millard Fillmore.

These stories and witty sayings are generally quite good. Some you will want to remember. He even has a last section on George W. Bush and Al Gore. You will remember some of these from your own reading of the news and watching Letterman and Leno.

What I like about these little stories is the human touch they add to the too often formal and impersonal view we have of our Presidents. We see their pictures, memorize a couple of dates and maybe some key legislation or war during their time in office and that will be it. We seldom get to know them as people. These stories, in just a few sentences, show their character and view of themselves, their time, and the world in which they lived. Sure, too much can be made of them. But they do add something useful and a chuckle or two never hurt anyone's day.

This is a bit larger volume than the first book, but it doesn't read long. And, like the first one, it is fun to just dip into now and again.

4 out of 5 stars It Takes One To Know One.......2003-11-17

Bob Dole is really funny! A few weeks ago the Doles and Clintons gave speeches in Washington D.C. and I happened to hear them on C-span. Dole's dead pan humor and hilarious one liners actually made me laugh out loud! Later that day I purchased this book which is quite good.

After researching all the American presidents, Dole rates them from the funniest to least funny. Some of the best lines are from prominent people other than the president. There is a saying (not in this book) "Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused"!Some of our presidents, fortunately, have been likeable, intelligent and quite witty. This fine collection of humorous quips and anecdotes makes an excellent gift for all ages. Bob Dole's remarks are right on!

My reason for the 4 star rating is for one reason only: Since most of us remember the faces of only a few past presidents, a small picture of the president being quoted at the beginning of each chapter would have been a nice touch. Dates are included which is helpful as we relate to each presidential term while reading.

The introduction to this book is entitled " Backbones and Funny Bones" In this intro, Bob Dole expresses his views on presidential humor with rare insight and he provides us with his "Dole poll of presidential wit and humor" in a non-partisan way. 41 presidents are rated as humorists along with a brief discription of why. This is a gem.

4 out of 5 stars Who knew Silent Cal was such a funny guy?.......2003-06-11

I really enjoyed reading Senator Bob Dole's entertaining look at the humor of the American presidents from George Washington to the present. While this book is certainly entertaining, it is also instructive in its own little way. Some former presidents seem to exist in name only, if that, in today's world, and Dole's little collection of quips and stories actually brings a little life into these important men of history. While Dole does not explore the agendas and politics of each president, the sense of personality that comes through in the case of even the most inscrutable of our top public servants is often rather informative. A sense of humor, while far from a qualification for the office, can be a great aid to any president, and Dole emphasizes the point that our greatest presidents have possessed both a funny bone and backbone. Each president gets his own little section of the book, wherein Dole has assembled a number of presidential quotes and stories alongside a number of comments made by politicians and humorists about each president in turn. I can't say that every reference here is funny, but there are some amazingly good zingers included, and I, as a whole, found this book highly entertaining. Dole is a pretty funny man in his own right, and his sense of humor shows in these pages.

Dole goes so far as to rank the first 41 (counting Grover Cleveland only once) elected leaders of the free world in terms of their humor, and the fact that the top ten consist of five Democrats and five Republicans is evidence of the total lack of partisanship Dole brings to this endeavor. Topping the list is Abraham Lincoln, and rightfully so; there are plenty of pages detailing the wit of our sixteenth President, a man who said "I laugh because I must not try" during the terribly difficult days of the War Between the States. Second place goes to Ronald Reagan, the Great Communicator and master of the one-liner. Third and fourth place go to Franklin and Theodore Roosevelt, respectively. These top four really stand a world apart from their White House cohorts. Fifth place goes to none other than Calvin Coolidge. Now, this came as something of a surprise to me, but as Dole demonstrates, Silent Cal was indeed quite a jokester and humorist; in fact, the funniest episode recorded in this book, at least in my opinion, is attributed to Coolidge. Kennedy, Truman, Lyndon Johnson, Hoover, and Wilson round out Dole's top ten. As one proceeds through the book, the material for each president significantly decreases; there just isn't a lot of humorous material to work with for those presidents ranking at the bottom of Dole's charts: Taylor, Harding, Van Buren, Buchanan, William Henry Harrison, Pierce, Benjamin Harrison, and poor Millard Fillmore who seems destined to bring up the rear in just about every kind of presidential survey one can devise. If these men ever said one thing funny, Dole includes it, but there are definitely slim pickings here. As for other presidents who may be of special interest to readers, George Bush (number 41) is twelfth, Washington fifteenth, Jefferson sixteenth, Clinton seventeenth, Carter twenty-second, and Nixon twenty-fifth. Since the results of the 2000 election were not known when this book went to the publisher, Dole has included a final chapter devoted to both George W. Bush and Al Gore.

Basically, Great Presidential Wit is one of the few politics-related books that both conservatives and liberals can both enjoy equally and civilly, as laughter knows no political party affiliation.

4 out of 5 stars Bob Dole may make it as a writer.......2002-03-04

Bob Dole may not have had a successful run at the presidency of the United States, but he is enjoying a wonderful career as a writer. In "Great Presidential Wit ( . . . I Wish I was in the Book)," Dole gathers together a wonderful, ragtag bunch of presidential anecdotes. From the familiar (JFK saying that Washington, DC had "all the efficiency of the South and all the charm of the North") to the undiscovered gem (General William Tecumseh Sherman giving Ulysses S. Grant the uneasy compliment that, "Grant stood by me when I was crazy, and I stood by him when he was drunk, and now we stand by each other"), Dole has done a masterful job of pulling together numerous items on every single president. My favorite story in the book refers to a man who was in the running for a cabinet position. The president's friend (I won't tell you which president or which friend) urges him not to hire this bozo, calling the man dishonest. "How bad is he?" inquires the president, to which the friend immediately replies, "Well, he wouldn't steal a red-hot stove . . . " The cabinet nominee finds out about the insult and demands a retraction, prompting the president's friend to say, "Fine, you WOULD steal a red-hot stove!" One of the most fun features of the book is Dole's categorization of each president into different roles. Under "And You Always Thought They were Dull," he lumps Ike, Jimmy Carter, and Rutherford B. Hayes. Under "Yankee Wits," just Calvin Coolidge and JFK share space. Dole generously includes Bill Clinton under the heading of "Funnier Than the Average President" (along with John Adams, George Bush, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson). This would make a terrific gift not only for your favorite politico, but for anyone who enjoys genuine good wit.

            Book Description

David Lynch is an anomaly. A pioneer of the American 'indie' aesthetic, he also works in Hollywood and for network TV. He has created some of the most disturbing images in contemporary cinema, and produced startlingly innovative work in sound. If the consistency of his 'vision' suggests he might be approached as an auteur, defining that vision raises many questions. The essays in this collection push toward a fuller account of the cultural and technological contexts within which his works developed during the 1980s and 1990s, and of his intense engagement with the creative and working practices of the industry. They offer an up-to-date range of theoretically divergent readings that demonstrates not only the difficulty of locating stable interpretative positions for Lynch's work, but also the pleasure of finding new ways of thinking about it. Films discussed include Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, The Straight Story, and Mulholland Drive.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very good read on David Lynch.......2007-07-06

I'm reading this book a 2nd time now. I would say this book is im my top three Lynch books as well and it provides a very good outline, and possibly, a key, for the way Lynch thinks. If anything, it will help you come up with more of your own conclusions. From a devoted Lynch fan, this is a great read!

            2 out of 5 stars lynch debunk.......2005-10-14

I gotta agree with Critic-AL... too much ink is being spilled about Lynch that reads like retread po-mo theories. I'll go with Pervert in the Pulpit too, and I'm not alone. You don't have to be a film student or academic to appreciate Johnson's heady read ... still, I think the review of Pervert by David Lancaster in the latest issue of Film and History totally sums up my thinking: "There is a slightly malicious pleasure in seeing a modish reputation being debunked, especially when the reader was mystified by the fuss in the first place. Pervert in the Pulpit is not a crude hatchet job, however. Rather, it is clear-sighted and informed, and, in true Manichean fashion, on the side of the critical angels."

2 out of 5 stars adulation or criticism?.......2005-03-26

By calling Nochimson's book "amazing," [...]the problem with a lot of Lynch criticism: the audience for his films is divided between fans and serious students of cinema. As Lynch's reputation as an innovator continues to wear thin - face, it, his uneven oeuvre is not aging well - die-hard loyalists continue to gush about his, in my opnion, limited success as a cutting-edge film director. This book may be timely, but it isn't as interesting as Jeff Johnson's iconoclastic "Pervert in the Pulpit: Morality in the Work of David Lynch," which I'd recommend before any of the other, more pandering texts Joe cites.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books on Lynch.......2004-09-23

Is it possible for a good book of film criticism to be dominated by lavish photos and the like? Not in my experience. The closest to that is the BFI series, and those are hardly the sort of thing "a reader" is talking about. Of all the books on Lynch out there, this is probably my #3, behind Martha Nomchinson's amazing "Wild at Heart in Hollywood" and the essential "Lynch on Lynch."

The simataneous release of the paperback and hardcover editions should have clued "a reader" into the HC edition being a library edition... Don't let this person's stupidty put you off, this is one of the best books analyzing Lynch one can find.

            5 out of 5 stars The Walrus.......2006-05-07

I am really biased because I know the author, he was my high school history teacher. I did not read the book until after graduation, but it is awesome. I am a huge Beatles fan. I have all the albums. My influence in the Beatles was developed by Mr. Patterson, with his discussions of the book, photos, and albums.

            5 out of 5 stars YOU DECIDE.......2002-10-17

This is a very interesting book that I just had to have after I read about it. Because I'm such a big Beatles fan? No, because I've always been amused by all the "Paul Is Dead" speculation. No matter which side of the fence you are on, you have to admit some of this stuff is freaky, coincidential, and down right reaching for it. Either way, this is a good reference book to make up your own mind. Or just do what I do and read it like all the Roswell/UFO stuff - it makes for good fiction. If any of it turns ot to be true then you'll be up to speed (but entertained in the meantime). I really enjoyed Patterson's discussion on tying in the works of Lewis Carroll. Now go put on your headphones, dust off your turntable, and ruin another needle (or use a simple child's toy and use your cassettes). For the record, let me just state that I was never the Walrus. Goo goo g'joob.

            4 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS.....UM....OK, I GUESS.......1999-07-02

Okay. I read this book like 2 years ago, so this review may not be so "accurate" if you know what I mean. I'm a Beatles fan & Paul McCartney is my fave. I'm 15 so I didn't witness "Beatle Mania" but after I saw the Anthology on TV, I fell in love. Well, I heard about the rumors that Paul was dead over the internet & I didn't know it was a joke, so when I heard that this book was out, I just HAD to buy it. Well, let me tell ya. If you have the internet, you really don't need this book at all. There are tons of webpages w/the exact same info that you can get for free. Okay, so there may be 1 or 2 more clues, but not enough to buy the book. Now if you don't have the internet, then you should buy the book cuz it has all the clues plus some other stuff. All in all, the title pretty much describes the book.

P.S. I want you to know that I don't believe any of that "Paul is Dead" stuff, it's just fun to read about:)

2 out of 5 stars More organization, editing & focus needed, but great photos........1999-03-02

I enthusiastically ordered this book after hearing a good interview with the author. I was rather disappointed with the book. The photos of album covers and insides, with the narrative comments, were a lot of fun. But the author seems to include reasonably clear clues, speculation, idle speculation and bizarre speculation all on the same level. Its hard to know what to take seriously as the book wanders throughout all of those. Would have been a more enjoyable read if better organized, edited and focused.

4 out of 5 stars Making Humans playable in In-Nomine.......2000-10-17

The CPG has the daunting task of making mortals viable characters in a system and setting in which things are stacked against them. It does an excellent job at this, elaborating on uniquely human abilities such as sorcery as well introducing options that level the playing field realistically and well. The discusion of human organisations and the role that humanity as a whole plays in the war is also very well done.

The book definetely has more bredth than depth, which leaves some parts of it feeling incomplete. All in all however the book is an effective tool kit and essential for any In-Nomine campaign that wants to have humans as more than just extras.

According to Dan Ciampa and Michael Watkins, 64 percent of executives hired form the outside won't make it in their new jobs. While executives from within the ranks know the challenges, culture, and politics of a company, newcomers face a corporate minefield. Right from the Start is Ciampa and Watkins's survival manual for leaders taking starting work at a new company. "Leadership is never easy," they write. "This is never truer than when a new leader enters an organization from the outside and must change its culture in fundamental ways." Through interviews with dozens of corporate leaders who have succeeded or failed in such transitions, the authors provide a strategy for getting it right from the outset.

Ciampa, an independent consultant, and Watkins, a Harvard Business School associate professor, advise three key missions for new leaders: Create momentum; master the ability to learn, convey a vision, and build coalitions; and know and manage yourself well. A fast start is especially crucial. In fact, they say, the most important period starts with the recruitment or interview process and runs through the first six months in a new role. Right from the Start provides plenty of real-life examples of successes and failures, in everything from building coalitions to changing corporate culture. The stories tend to suffer sometimes because the executives remain anonymous. Nonetheless, the book is instructive for business people assuming new management roles. --Dan Ring

            1 out of 5 stars I was scamed.......2007-04-24

This download is a trick. All of the reviews and product descriptions depict the hardcover book which is hundreds of pages long. Do not be fooled like I was thinking you would get the entire book in digital form. I payed my money and recieved a 12 page version of the full book I expected to get.

5 out of 5 stars Thanks for saving me money.......2005-11-18

I read the ebook experiences others had and decided not to purchase the ebook and for that matter the book period today through Amazon.

Amazon needs to take seriously the buyers that come to its online stores and remove such eBooks if they are only a 9 page summary.

Disgusted and will buy from another online provider.

1 out of 5 stars Be careful downloading e-books!!.......2005-04-30

I was disapointed when I downloaded it and got 8 pages.
As a customer, I expected to have the digital version of the full book and not a summary.
I thought that the price difference was due to the absence of paper, printing, handling, shipping, etc.
The hardcover version is more than 300 pages; if you take the price per page of the digital version, the hardcover version should cost then ten times more!!!
All the examples are referred to that version and nowhere I was said that I was paying 5 dollars for a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PRODUCT.
I honestly believed that I was buying the full book.
I will think better before ebuying again....

1 out of 5 stars Content of the Digital Version.......2004-05-15

Thanks to the other reviews I knew I would be buying a summarized version of the book. I was hoping it would still provide the essence and condensed insights supposedly in the full version; however, I was quite disappointed.

I was a CEO of a tech company and have recently been asked by the venture capitalists to CEO a growing company in the same industry (as opposed to a turnaround effort). I was hoping to find nuggets of advice on how to effectively and sensitively assume the leadership position from the current co-founder & CEO who has done well up to this stage and is respected by his loyal staff.

Either the full version lacks the insightful information I am looking for, or the summarized version by Execubook is simply too high level. In fact, the cover page advertises: "Buy the Full Book". I guess it's purpose is pretty clear. Nevertheless, the summary makes you wonder if the full book also suffers from 'common sense' type of advice.

For example: the Table of Contents:
            Introduction p.2
            Four Pieces of Advice p.2
            The 5 Primary Challenges p.3
            Traps to Avoid p.5
            Taking Action p.6

Briefly, the content of the book:
            Four Pieces of Advice
            1. Take advantage of the transition period into the new job
            2. Don't underestimate the importance of advice and counsel
            3. Show some empathy for the person you're succeeding

            5 Primary Challenges
            1. Acquire needed knowledge quickly
            2. Establish new relationships
            3. Juggle organizational and personal transition
            4. Manage expectations
            5. Manage personal equilibrium

            Traps to Avoid
            1. Falling behind the learning curve
            2. Becoming isolated
            . . .

            Taking Action
            1. Plan on taking 2-3 years to make measurable progress
            2. On arrival, you should understand the organization's existing strategy, goals and challenges and shoul have formed hypotheses about operating priorities.
            . . .

Each numbered item was followed by a paragraph or few lines of description, but those explanations left me saying, 'no duh.'

In fairness, it is hard to summarize without sounding too general, but there was very little in terms of new or provoking frameworks & mindsets, assumption challenges, or interesting insights.

Buy the original or look for something else altogether.

One last comment. I've now seen several unfavorable reviews on Amazon about the digital versions of what are supposed to be good books. I believe the concept of eBooks is great, but it looks like it's still in an immature, buyer-beware stage.

2 out of 5 stars Digital Version is NOT the same as the Hardcover.......2004-05-15

As a regular Amazon Business Books customer living in China I often want to get books quickly but don't want to pay for the shipping which often adds another 30%-50% of the book price. Therefore I prefer the eBooks.

I was shocked to find out that the electronic version is not the same as the hard copy. I am buying the book for the full content and not a 9 page summary.

I should say shame on Amazon, the Publishers and Adobe for promoting this format; however, the price is significantly less and there is fine print does tell you it's only 9 pages. But then again it's a totally different item.
