Book Description
This penetrating examination of two major themes in the Expressionist and Neue Sachlichkeit movements traces German artists' varied responses to their country's abrupt encounter with industrialization and urbanization.
Few artistic movements mirror the social and political climates of their emergence as much as German Expressionism and Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity). This exhibition catalog presents a selection of important paintings, covering the period from 1907 to 1926, from one of Germany's major collections of twentieth-century art. The thirty-four paintings presented here include works by Kirchner, Nolde, Pechstein, Dix, Groz, Schmidt-Rottluff, Heckel, and Beckmann. Arranged chronologically, and with in-depth explanatory texts, they allow readers to trace the evolution of German Expressionism as it moved from the mountains to the city, from optimism to bitter disillusionment.

Pleasing Paper.......2004-06-17
Ming-Ju Sun has created a lovely collection of kabuki outfits, each one with the name of the character, play it is from, and style of play, from historical drama to musical. The inside of the covers also contains history and information on kabuki and kabuki actors. I recommend this for Ming-Ju Sun fans and kabuki fans, and those who love to collect beautiful paper dolls.
Great Costumes............2001-02-28
The kabuki costumes are very colorful and wonderfully drawn. There are 8 female costumes and 8 male costumes. The dolls are made of thicker paper, found on the flap of the back cover. Even though it defeats the point of having paper dolls, I found that I rather liked keeping the costumes uncut and left in the book. I use this book for reference, given the handy short descriptions on the side. The only reason why I didn't give it 5 stars was because I've seen better work from Ming-Ju Sun. I recommend Ming-Ju Sun's "Japanese Kimono." This book has 26 costumes, more detailed with better color, and the whole book is done on thick paper. The paper for the Kabuki Costumes was much thinner and would most likely not endure prolonged handling. Both books are the same price but I believe you get a better deal with "Japanese Kimono."
Gorgeous Kabuki Costumes with short description.......2000-04-02
16 Kabuki Costumes with short description, such as "Benkei (an 11th-century warrior) in Kanjincho (The subscription List). Juhachiban." Each costume comes with appropriate Kumadori (make-ups) and wig.
Even though I don't know the details of each Kabuki costume, I believe it well convey the mood of Kabuki. If you are interested in Kabuki, it'll be a good starter.

Book Description
Under the weathered skies of America's heartland, and in the wounded hearts of every family in one tiny rural town, a terrible secret has been kept for too many years. Now, a young boy named Trevor must try to keep his younger brother Will from falling victim to the worst fears of a troubled town that can't begin to understand the tragic secret that binds its families together. Some folks would call Trevor's brother a monster. But to Trevor, Will is just another kid trapped in a dark reality he can't comprehend. When the situation moves from bad to worse, and their father threatens to do away with Will, Trevor learns that they're not alone - that "freak" children were born to other families in Gristlewood Valley. Against all odds, and with nothing but love for his brother in his heart, Trevor is going to do whatever he can to get the freak children out of harm's way, if it's not already too late.

Good...save the ending.......2007-06-09
"Freaks of the Heartland" is about a young boy named Trevor whose youngest brother is a mutant, or "Freak" named Will. After discovering that his father wants to kill his brother (and supposedly, other Freaks), he and Will escape, though not without killing their father and wandering into the dark of night. After stumbling upon a forgotten patch of gravestones, both boys discover that there are three other Freaks out there, and it is in Trevor and Will's hands to find them, and to find salvation for them, if they could.
All in all, it is a very good story, with beautiful artwork and some well-fleshed out characters. It grips you well as it shows just how cruel people can be to things they don't understand, or care to even acknowlege. However, this story fails to give a very good conclusion to all of this. In the end, Trevor is now an older man, who now has Will at his side, but it is never clear on what happened to the other Freaks, or if the heartland of stubborn hicks even accepted them back into society. Although it was never clear how the Freaks came to be, other than all of the women in that area were pregnant at the same time after a rainstorn, and gave birth to Freaks, I didn't really mind that part. It was the conclusion I was looking foward to, and it was a shame that it ended so poorly. I recomend this story, but be prepared for a terrible ending.
Disappointing; could have been so much better.......2007-05-22
Steve Niles is today's first name for horror comics, first gaining popularity some time ago with his first 30 Days of Night series. Since then, Niles has churned out many works for various companies, all of which ranging from solid to disappointing. Freaks of the Heartland is no different, as it features a teriffic premise and fantastic artwork, but ultimately fails in it's delivery. The story follows a small town community that finds it's women all giving birth to deformed or freakish children. Soon enough, all the children attempt to run away, with dire results (naturally). Niles doesn't offer anything fresh here, or even try to come up with any sort of inventiveness to the proceedings. The sad part is, the story is ripe to be played around with to make it something really memorable, but once again, Niles just delivers an average story, only this time around it's filled with stereotypical hillbilly talk. The only saving grace of Freaks of the Heartland? Greg Ruth's spectacular artwork is a sight to behold, with his innovative techniques and stark contrasts making for something really special. Ruth's art is the only reason to give Freaks of the Heartland a look, it's just a shame that such fantastic work got wasted on a mediocre story.
terrific art, insufficient story.......2005-09-04
The Booklist/ALA review above really hit the nail on the head. Ruth's artwork is great, at times even beautiful. The story, however, is rather lacking. Niles sketches out an intriguing setup, but just when it's really getting interesting, suddenly and maddeningly wraps things up, with an epilogue set some 50 to 60 years later that explains next to nothing. Not wanting to spoil anything, I won't be more specific, but there are a lot of obvious questions that are raised and then frustratingly ignored. The pictures sure are great, though.
A little different for Niles, but in a good way.......2005-07-09
Having read (and thoroughly enjoyed) many other of Steve Niles' works, I was expecting similar fare in this book. However, instead of the sinister creatures and cutting wit of previous titles, I was surprised to find this to be first and foremost a heartwarming tale of two brothers who find themselves in a bad situation. Plus, freaks -- who can go wrong there? I can't recommend this title highly enough.

Wonderful Book, Wonderful Review.......2006-01-12
Title: 511 Things Only Women Understand
Publisher: Barns and Noble Inc.
Year of Publication: 2003
Genre: Female Humor
In this book the author is just telling people the things that men just don't understand. For example, # 372 says, "That a lot of men are convinced that women are bad at math and science, silly about money, too emotional, scaredy-cats, and not tough enough. This from folks who can't figure out how the copier works, don't know how to comparison-shop, get hysterical over the Cubs, are terrified by the IRS, and cave in to whatever their mothers want. Nice try, guys." This is one of my favorite sayings from this book. Another one that I found really amusing was this one, # 433, which says, "That cheating is cheating whether it's a one-hour lunch date or the whole enchilada." These are just a few of them please, if you are looking for a really humorous book, you want this one.
I thought that this book was a really excellent book. It gives women a laugh and men an education on the issues in our lives they will never understand so they might as well not even try to. This book is a decent book for girl's night out or even just being with your girlfriend's parties. Even just family get gatherings will be better. It will make everyone have a wonderful time. Even if one of your girlfriends has the blues read her a few of the items in this book, and she will begin to cheer up.

It must be true........2004-01-24
I'm a 40 year old guy, and I DIDN'T GET THEM-any of them. I ended up reading the whole thing over several days as my girlfriend made it available as she was changing her outfit (again) before we went to dinner. I found out that this is okay, according to #87 in the book. Page after page, I kept waiting for something to hit home. However, this is not to say it wasn't entertaining. Don't feel like I know women any better, but I'm glad I read this insight into the feminine mystique. I'd have no hesitation in giving it as a gift to any woman who wants a laugh and a smile.
Right On !.......2001-04-21
How Lorraine Bodger came up with all these "things" is beyond me. She is absolutely right on all of them. Every page brings a smile. I bought a book for my best friend, read it, then ordered one for my 20 year-old-daughter. What she doesn't know now, she'll learn, and appreciate later. This book is definitely worthy of being a hardback...a great keepsake.

Get ready for some of the best movie medicine ever made.
The smash hit women's film guide Cinematherapy taught women that comfort, self-acceptance, inspiration, and humor were no farther away than the video store - and inspired the daily primetime show on the WE Network (Women's Entertainment). Now the authors are back with a Cinematherapy take on the Oscar canon and how these award-winning films serve not only as a celluloid pharmacy but also as a window into ourselves, our relationships, and our times.
Starting with the present and working backward by decade, Cinematherapy Goes to the Oscars uncovers the grand themes of each decade's award-winning films, from the Father Issue films of the seventies, with their ambiguous father figures (Patton, Kramer vs. Kramer) to bad girls acting out for disapproving fathers' love (Klute, Cabaret), to the Unsung Hero films of the fifties (On the Waterfront, The African Queen). Along the way there is great dish on who wore what on the Red Carpet, who said what in their acceptance speeches, and party tips for throwing a four-star Oscar bash, as well as returning popular sidebars like the Handy Hunk Chart.
As the first female take on these sacred cows of the Silver Screen, focusing on the moments, messages, leading ladies, and supporting men that matter to us most, Cinematherapy Goes to the Oscars is the ultimate indulgence for every woman ready to curl up and take charge of her own remote control.

INCREDILBE ADVENTURE!.......2002-12-06
This adventure was incredible! It starts out when you meet this guy in a bar... he's trying to get to a city, but it's to dangerous to get there with out protection. He pays you to guide him there. After three weeks you get to the town. He pays you and asks you to do another favor for him. He asks you to recover his friends journal...that's in the accursed tower. You agree. You travel to find info. to where the tower is. You meet this huge guy in the winter in the middle of no where. He tells you pretty much anything you need to know. You find the tower and you go through it and you fight some really hard monsters. Finally you get to the last room. You open the door... and there's a evil wizard that looks like he's half dead. Right when you enter he teleports all of you're players to different parts of the tower. Those who can resist the spell, stay to fight the wizard. When you kill him he has the journal in his hands... and you find a Robe of Eyes. This means that you can see in every direction (kind of having eyes in the back of your head). You can keep it or you can sell it for 90,000 gold pieces. If you read the journal you find out that it has spells for evil mages. When you go to meet that guy... before you enter the room he puts on mage armor, just incase you try to kill him. The dude is a EVIL MAGE and wants the journal. If you fight him then you may win the battle. If you don't then you get paid and the adventure is over...
I think this is the best adventure ever! It takes along time to finish the Dungeon. You should buy it right now!!!
Incredible Adventure.......2002-12-05
The Accursed Tower: You meet A guy that is trying to recover his friends journal in the accursed tower... he pays you to be his guide and to find the journal. You travel for 21 days (I think?) through mountains. You fight a gang of hobgoblins and you get some good treasure... but better awaits you. Then you get to this town where you stay with him. You try to uncover the mystery of the Accursed tower. You meet this big murf guy in the middle of of a snowy place. He tells you pretty much everything. You go and find the Accursed Tower. You go in it and search the place and fight a lot of monsters... then you find the evil wizard that holds the journal. He teleports all of your players to different parts of the Tower. Those who can resist the spell fights him. If you defeat him you get the Robe of eyes... this makes you see in all directions, you can wear it or sell it for 90,000 gold pieces. The journal is in his hand. If you read the journal you discover that the person that paid you to recover it is an EVIL MAGE... when you go to meet him he cast mage armor on himself just incase... well that's pretty much the whole Adventure. I thought the adventure kicked [butt]... and I hope you enjoy it too... I RATE THE ACCURSED TOWER A 5
It's best low level adventure in Forgotten Realms.......2000-06-01
This is a shining star for Forgotten Realms. If you don't mind playing a low level adventure, buy the accursed tower. This adventure has everything a DM could want. Good story line, overland travel allowing lots of opportunity to roleplay as well as a difficult but survivable underground crawl. It is must play for anyone who has read the Icewind Dale trilogy and wants to juice up the campaign with small parts featuring your favorite NPCs. This module is also good for younger DMs as it provides well laid out text boxes. It even has excellent subplots that can be explored after the adventure. The only thing I feel that needs to pointed out is the map. Pretty but flawed (watchout for the stairway that seemly dissappear). There are a large amount of magic items, but it is the Realms. I only hope TSR will now make some good mid level adventues.
Great module, Maps a bit difficult to read.......2000-01-22
The Accursed Tower is a great module. It has a great story, and any PC's will probably enjoy it very much. For the most part, it was very well written. There were a couple of places within that I had to stop, think about what was just written, and also maybe back track a little bit. Another problem I had with it was the dungeon map. For the most part, it was good, but figuring out where the stairs lead took a little bit of time. This module is absolutly perfect for a new group of adventurers. I started a new group of first level PC's and they enjoyed it a lot. Another thing that is a DM's dream come true is the ideas it gives at the end for continuing.
A fine adventure for new characters.......1999-12-05
First of all, let me say that this is not a book. This is a packaged adventure, it comes in a shrink-wrapped cardboard box, and itself contains numerous booklets and maps. There. Having said that...
The Accursed Tower is a good Advanced Dungeons and Dragons adventure set in the fantasy world of Faerun, where the Forgotten Realms setting is placed. This is a classic fantasy world in the best tradition of Tolkien. I won't spoil the fun for you by telling what the adventure is about, but it does a very good job at showing your players the basics of the campaign world. The terrain maps are wonderfully understandable, and even the cave maps detailing 3D areas can be read without too much strain. The adventure is easy to build upon, which cannot be said about a great many others. Try it.

Customer Reviews:
Flawed but essential.......2005-07-16
What can you do? The text itself has no answers to the practice questions, many of which are not really straightforward. The solutions manual has a number of errors (I've found an average of at least 2 per chapter, and I'm sure I don't catch them all), but for the most part puts you on the right path.
The text is nearly useless without the solutions manual, so I guess you need this; read carefully and think deeply when an answer doesn't make sense -- it may be you, or it may be the manual.
I can't believe Brealey had much to do with this book -- it suffers from the sloppiness you'd expect from an underpaid grad student. Based on my experiences in grad school, I'd bet most of my net worth that Brealey had little to do with the actual writing of the "solutions" here.
To learn finance you gotta do the exercises!.......2003-10-15
Ignore the guys complaining about the odd wrong answer and ignore the guys complaining about Brealey & Meyers.
Let's face it: "Principles..." is THE book in educational finance; and most likely, if you're reading this review you haven't chosen the book on your own accord but rather it was chosen for you on your M.Sc. or the like. And now you're wondering about buying the solutions manual...
So, why do the exercises? Well, it's the only way to learn finance. The book is good, but having gone through it and the quiz questions, you might think "Was that all? I could pass an exam with one hand tied to my back." (I know I did...) So you need the exercises to get you down from that pedestal and get you to LEARN finance (!). The questions are good and varied and get you to think about the concepts, formulas etc. They are in general better and more advanced than the quiz Qs. And if you can't figure out all the questions on your own then a book with solutions is quite handy.
Only problem is that it's a bit expensive considering it's only a solutions manual. But a good buy nonetheless!
way slow delivery.......2003-03-08
USPS took 3 1/2 weeks to deliver. Pay for the extra shipping to get product in a timely manner.
Waste of time!.......2002-03-27
The solution's manual is just as full of MISTAKES as the book itself - one huge catastroph that should be forbidden for any serious student of Corporate Finance. Scandal!
Solutions manual - too many errors.......2001-07-05
I bought this book thinking that it would help me verify the answers, but in fact there are too many errors in the book. I have found a lot of problems out of sequence, and a lot of them not properly done. I have contacted the author to mention about the errors but haven't heard from him yet.
