Book Description
Art, Science, and Witchcraft in Early Modern Holland is the first sustained study to offer an account of the rise of scientific naturalism in Dutch art and the simultaneous interest in fantastic imagery, representations of witches in particular. Claudia Swan uses the work of artist Jacques de Gheyn II (1565–1629) to explore the reciprocity between visual representation and early modern descriptive science, and of the parallel demonological theories of the human imagination and artistic theories of creation. This book is the first to examine De Gheyn’s work in the context of cultural history and image theory.

Book Description
In one fully comprehensive book, Clothing Appearance and Fit: Science and Technology provides a critical examination of the technological developments and scientific understanding of the appearance and fit of clothing. The authors bridge the gap between the science of beauty and fashion design and garment evaluation technology, garment drape, and human anthropometrics and sizing. The authors begin by discussing body attractiveness, how it relates to clothing material and design parameters, and classical and contemporary theories of beauty. They present the industry's techniques, methods, and standards for assessing clothing appearance and fit and review the research and development of objective measurement technologies for evaluating clothing appearance and fit. The book includes coverage of fabric objective measurement, fabric properties and garment drape, the R & D of body measurement, anthropometrics, and sizing systems. Concluding with a review of published work on garment design and pattern alteration, the book covers myriad industrial standards, techniques, and practices. It is an indespensible resource for textile and fashion students, researchers, and professionals in the clothing and textile industries.

Book Description
The inspiration for the outrageous hit anime series, the anime's director told ANIMERICA magazine that the manga contains scenes he knew he'd never get away with! EXCEL SAGA is a charm offensive that's guaranteed to offend. Today the city--tomorrow, the world! That's the plan of Il Palazzo, the haughty, pretty-boy leader of ACROSS, a secret society based somewhere deep beneath the streets and sewers of Fukuoka, Japan. It's a good thing he's starting small, because ACROSS begins its bid for global domination with just two members--Il Palazzo and Excel, the teenaged girl smitten with him. After setting up house in a cheap apartment, Il Palazzo explains that the budget for world conquest and the budget for room and board must regrettably be kept separate. Their neighbors are a trio of regular guys, whom they hope will all overlook the irregularities of their comings and goings; not to mention the sound of screams, struggles, and gasoline explosions!

Book Description
Texas and Texans have been known to boast of having the best or the worst, the most or the least, the largest or the tiniest of just about everything. Join author Bill Cannon as he reveals facts that depict the colorful bravado unique to the Lone Star State. For instance, not six but seven flags flew over Texas. In 1832 the composer of The Star Spangled Banner, Francis Scott Key, was the counsel hired by Sam Houston to defend him on assault charges. And someone other than Sam Bass may be buried in his grave. A Treasury of Texas Trivia is complemented by newspaper accounts, photographs, and other documentation of these and other little-known bits of Texas history.

Book Review .......2007-03-24
This book is wonderful and is the best resource book for Cinematic job information that I've seen yet. It is a must have!!
Encyclopedic.......2001-04-11
As far as I know there are two books on the subject - the other being Eric Taub's "Gaffers, Grips and Best Boys". From those two Hines' book is the more encyclopedic one. It is well structured into chapters preceeded by organigrams showing the job dependencies. All jobs featured - although it's the more complete approach of both books, don't expect the book to contain every movie job - are precisely described with pre-, production and post-production duties. If you need 'technical' and concise information, buy this book.
Great book for any filmmaker.......2000-09-22
This is a great book for anyone who has ever wondered what each person in the credits does. This edition is far more comprehensive than others (including associate producer, line producer etc.). It could be a little more comprehensive and better organized if the headers were easier to read and each new job started on a new page. However, I'm an independent filmmaker and it's a valuable resource to have.

Though he begins by bemoaning "the difficulty of writing anything on Bach remotely worthy of its subject," Malcolm Boyd goes on to do exactly that. This volume from the Master Musicians Series (which also includes Julian Budden on Verdi and Michael Kennedy on Richard Strauss) intermingles chapters on Bach's life with chapters on his music (also roughly chronological) in a delightfully clearheaded way. Boyd is perfectly willing to say whether he finds a piece of music to be substandard and freely takes issue with the scholarship of earlier analysts. Taking nothing for granted, Boyd disproves common assumptions about relative dates of compositions. The section on cantatas begins with brief notes on the genre, a few antecedents, and the subtypes of secular and sacred. Boyd then briskly reviews the surviving works, dwelling on a few for some enlightening and representative details. In "Canons and Counterpoint," he sorts out the Musical Offering in a remarkable few paragraphs before having a go at The Art of the Fugue. Boyd's charts are very easy to follow (appropriate for a composer whose music is often compared to architecture), and his musical examples--especially in the chapter titled "Orchestral, Instrumental, and Keyboard Music"--are spectacularly well chosen. There is room for a few choice incidental observations (e.g., cantatas for the winter months were shorter, sparing the choirboys time in the unheated organ lofts). A 22-page work list (revised in 1997), a life calendar, and a brief chapter on numerology round out a highly rewarding volume. --William R. Braun
Customer Reviews:
A Fair Read..........2007-01-16
Malcolm Boyd's Bach is nearly a classic at this point. It's a fair read, but frankly it leaves me a little flat. It's okay, but truth be told, Karl Geiringer's Bach is far, far better.
not bad, but there are better bios of bach.......2001-11-05
This is not a bad introduction to the life and music of J.S. Bach, however it is nowhere as well written or informative as Christoph Wolff's biography. I found myself falling to sleep reading Boyd, but the Wolff kept me interested all the way. Wolff also presents the death of Bach's parents as a much more central experience, which I found Boyd tended to place less significance on. This is not a poor book, it is just that the Wolff bio is so much better.
An Outstanding Biography of Bach.......1998-11-16
Bach scholarship was turned upside down in the 1950s by the acceptance of new scholarship by Alfred Durr and Georg Dadelsen which established a new chronology and authenticity for Bach's music. It took about 30 years for Bach biography to catch up and digest the implications of the new discoveries. Bach biographies published before 1960 are frequently inaccurate in many details, and this include Spitta's famous 3 volume study. Of the recent books on Bach, Professor Boyd's book is one of the very best and the place for anyone with an interest in Bach to start their exploration of his life and work.
A fine summary of the life and works of J.S.Bach........1998-09-24
This book provides an analyical and important summary of the greatest of all 18th century composers. Boyd succeeds in providing the life of Bach in context with the musical conditions of 18th century Germany, but adds his own perspective as seen from the end of the 20th century. I found this book most enjoyable, along the likes of other biographies of Bach, including Spitta and Schweitzer. To be added to the Bach Plucked! web site's recommended reading list.

Book Description
Spades for Winners is an instructive and entertaining how-to guide to the popular card game Spades. Written by the leading authority on the game, the book demonstrates technique and strategy, and includes emphasis on everyone's weakness, trump management. The book contains information on Internet play and Rules & Options. This is the complete book of Spades.
Customer Reviews:
For beginners and young intermediate players.......2006-07-16
If you're past the young intermediate stage of spades, you might find this book just a repeat of what you already know. For those of you I'd recommend Steve's more advanced book "Master Spades". Although, there are some people I've partnered with who were supposedly 'advanced' players who didn't know even the basic concepts set forth by Steve in the last chapters of Spades for Winners. IE setting vs bagging equals more wins! An eleven bid is always a setting opportunity! Also the bidding chapters in this book I'd like to prescribe to some of my random partners.
I'd say overall this is a must read for those of you who would like to take your spades game to the next level. Then after you practice the basics in this book, move on to "Master Spades" by Steve.
Interesting, but not that great!.......2004-03-19
This book has some pretty decent parts. I never knew anything about the origins of the game. The bidding section is good. Duplicate sounds like a real good variation.
However, this book is just too long, and of limited value to the new - intermediate player. Steve is very long-winded in his explanations of hands. The chapter on Nils is worthless. Defensive play is scantily covered. If you have a lot of time on your hands, or your computer is broken, by all means by this book. Otherwise, save your money....
Solid, excellent Beginner/Intermediate level book.......2002-08-31
The authors other book "Master Spades" is for advanced players. This book is targeted towards beginner and intermediate level players.
The book covers a wide range of topics from nil bidding, covering the nil, setting the nil, how to maximize your trick taking ability, what to do if you have lots of Spades (don't go wasting them trumping), Bag avoidance (concentrate on making your bid first and setting the opps), bidding, and other topics.
There are a large number of sample hands, bidding quizes, and card playing quizes.
I found the book to be interesting and enjoyable, though it takes some time to work through the examples. If you're willing to invest a little time reading this book it will enable you to enjoy your Spading more because you will win more often. Its not just a list of a few tips, you need to go through the examples. Its worth the time to do so.
After you've read this book and applied the techniques and played a couple of hundred games, try "Master Spades", by the same author. Its a classic, and a must read for any serious Spades player.
For Players Looking to Improve.......2002-06-25
Spades for Winners begins with a brief history and overview of the game of spades, and then offers a simple yet sound bidding system that is easy to understand, and just as effective as some of the more complex systems in use. The remaining 300 pages are devoted primarily to card play.
Steve presents an aggressive style that is superior to the popular bagging strategy in common use. He demonstrates in easy to understand language how to get the maximum mileage from your cards. His techniques are well explained, and normally illustrated with full deal examples. Particular attention is paid to two subjects that are a common weakness of spades players at all levels, nil defense, and trump management. Bagging strategy is also covered, but the emphasis of the book is on playing aggressively to set the opposition.
Spades for Winners focuses on the foundations of strong play, and is intended for the beginner to intermediate level player. Such players can expect to see their play improve significantly after reading this text. Experts too may benefit from a review of these principles. My only caution, is that this book is not to be read lightly, but should be considered a learning tool, and thus be studied appropriately.
If you're a novice, or average player, aside from sitting down with an expert for one-on-one tutoring, this book is simply the best way to improve your play.
Very confusing and hard to understand..........2002-04-12
"Spades for Winners" is very long, very difficult to read, and very boring. I am 12 years old, trying to learn the game of Spades. I read another spades book, and really liked it. It was really an awesome way to learn the beginners' rules..
Then I wanted to learn more about the game. My sister gave me a copy of Fleishman's Book, and I was not able to get past the first few chapters. I felt like I was reading some of my Dad's technical work manuals. He is an engineer, and he was also unable to understand all of the gibberish (as he called it) of "Spades For Winners". ... Do not buy Mr. Steve's book, as you will be left in the dust.....

Customer Reviews:
Exceptional Coaching Resource.......2007-02-22
The combination of theory and practice lends well to readers of all levels (from graduate students to seasoned professionals). The author's systems perspective focuses on the executive as part of a greater whole within the organization and the importance of understanding the influences that are impacting his/her behaviors. O'Neill also focuses on the importance of a results orientation (a topic often lost in other coaching books). She discusses the importance of thinking like an executive so that you (as a coach) can produce at a level that executives expect - increasing the likelihood of establishing rapport, a long-term relationship and, most of all, bottom-line results.
Well Written and Enlightening.......2007-01-08
This is a well written and thorough resource which aptly combines theory with practical application of the systems theory to executive coaching as well as advice and tools to use. The book is very useful in translating the systems theory to readable and useful frameworks, pragmatic tips and case studies.
The author methodically explains the four phases of coaching process namely contracting, planning, implementation and debriefing. She explains that coaching is a complex process which involves the application of the principles and methods of psychology, leadership principles, business management and organisation development, among others, to assist the executive and the aspiring executive improve their effectiveness.
The book will assist the executive coaching practitioners, business executives and managers who need them and offers a practical guide to developing the effective communications and relationship expertise needed by business managers to run effectively their organisations in the highly competitive operating environment.
Read this book and you will have a comprehensive understanding of this emerging new field.
Excellent Aplication of Systems Theory to Executive Coaching!.......2006-02-14
I highly recommend this book to new and seasoned coaches. Not only is it enjoyable to read, but the author presents a clear description of the application of systems theory to executive coaching. There are a number of coaching books that describe coaching skills, but O'Neill's book provides a solid theoretical framework for applying these skills.

Useful Guide with a Few Key Elements Missing.......2004-03-19
Mary Beth O'Neill is an experienced executive coach who provides a useful perspective and helpful guidelines and examples of what coaches can do to help executives. Her systems perspective and four-step approach is helpful with case examples and additional insights into how leaders can be coached to coach and how coaching can be combined with consulting to have a greater impact on the organization. There are several key elements of professional coaching that are missing in the book: First- The four-step approach does not include a thorough assessment of the executive and his/her organization using reliable historical, normative, and 360-degree data. Instead, the major focus is on asking the executive what they think they need or want to work on. Second- There is a lack of focus on involving and partnering with the executive's boss, board, key constituents, HR professionals and others to truly understand the executive and the organization from multiple perspectives and to have the potential impact on the whole system. And third- there could be greater emphasis on what happens after the coaching is completed; how to transition for continued learning, application, and improvement.
For more information about the principles and practice of executive coaching that incorporates Ms. O'Neill's useful approaches along with the additional components described above, you may want to go to the following website for the free Handbook of Executive Coaching along with other free information and tools for executives, coaches, and HR professionals: www.executivecoachingforum.com
"Real World" Coaching.......2003-01-12
Excellent resource for experienced coaches looking for insight to take their practice to a higher level. This book is also useful for those considering coaching or consulting as a permanent profession. O'Neill provides many honest examples of the inner thoughts of coaches during sessions and tools to help maintain effectiveness and composure with tough clients.
Her humble writing style fosters the belief that "I could do this!" even though the concepts are highly advanced. I found myself going back over pages and concepts as I realized I had been in similar situations before. The case studies are exciting and easy to absorb but read this book slowly to embrace the richer complexities.
