      Book Description

Robes and Honor is a fascinating exploration of the possible common origin and subsequent developments of investiture across medieval Christianity and medieval Islam. The ceremony in all of its cultural variety was much more than the public adoption of a high-value textiles as symbol of office; within a culture, robing established a personal link "from the hand" of the giver -- king, pope, head of a sect, ambassador -- to the receiver -- noble, general, official, nun, or acolyte. This volume challenges current thinking on religious and regional boundaries of "cultures", raises semiotic issues about imagined communities, and addresses problems of kingship.

5 out of 5 stars Superman: The Sunday Classics is a gem!.......2002-08-20

Superman: The Sunday Classics, 1939-1943 reprints the newspaper weekend Sunday colored strip stories of Superman. Superman, created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster, was originally meant for the syndicated strips that ran in the newspapers. As the Man of Steel had made his first appearance in comic books first in 1938, it was after becoming a huge success there that his creators would bring the hero to the newspaper strips immediately.

I loved these stories, found them to be quite exciting. The evolution of Superman was happening in these strips. He would later on start chanting his infamous "Up, up and away!" phrase. From fighting crooked criminals, giant robots, Nazis, to even the elements of World War II, this book shows just how Superman was still there fighting against injustice. I was quite pleased with the quality reproduction that was taken to restore these strips. It really looks fabulous, and tips off to the publishers of this book, DC Comics and Kitchen Sink Press on a job well done in restoring these long time gems once again for old and new readers to read once more. A worthy addition to anyone's library.

5 out of 5 stars The Evolution of Superman.......2000-05-28

Siegel and Shuster conceived Superman as a newspaper strip. This is where they wanted to be. And it shows. Comics may be for kids but the adults also read the weekend comic section. It's readable. It shows America concerns before their entry into WW2. It shows the propaganda of the day as America started to fight in WW2. This book shows us Superman at the beginning. He's jumping not flying. The art is crude. As you continue to read this volume Superman begins to fly, really does say 'up, up and away', and changes in telephone booths and slowly becomes the Superman of popular culture today. The art also improves as you read the book. The reproduction of the Sunday pages is superb with crisp, clean colors. This book is a gem. Superman as he was. Superman as we know him today. A worthy addition to your library.

4 out of 5 stars Annie in 1935.......2006-11-20

This book is a collection of all 365 "Little Orphan Annie" cartoons printed in 1935.

1935 introduces the mysterious Punjab, a somewhat-frightening 10-foot giant with magical powers, who eventually becomes a regular in the strip. It also features "Daddy" Warbucks' rise to millionaire status again, this time by marketing a miraculous metal called Eonite, which is the answer to all of humanity's problems.

Warbucks' plans are ruined by evil men who want to use Eonite for personal gain, not universal benifit, and the Eonite factory is destroyed. The rest of the year then focuses on Annie, who is briefly kidnapped by a gang of Chinese murderers, but manages to escape and gets taken to Hollywood, where she becomes a stunt double for a spoiled child star and eventually gets a starring role as an African princess in a movie.

The book is generally a good read, although a printing error (the Monday strips appear before the Sunday strips) somewhat takes away from the strip's continuity. Also, some readers may get a minor shock from the politically incorrect portrayal of the Chinese and African natives. Nevertheless, 1935 was a solid year for "Little Orphan Annie", even if it wasn't the strip's best year.

      5 out of 5 stars American Master.......2000-11-16

While I totally disagree with 99% of Gray's political and moral views, I can't deny he is one of the finest cartoonists of the 20th century. More than anyone else he is able to capture a perfect mood, and suck the reader in. I have no idea how he does it, considering what appears to be limited drafting skills, but he works a magick on the reader that makes the story come grippingly to life.

The dark shadows, somber atmosphere, and grim details make reading these stories an unforgettable experience. I am never disapointed with Annie, and I always feel like I have actually traveled to her world. Gray's magick is undeniable. You have to read it to believe it.

4 out of 5 stars Topical in many ways.......1999-08-26

Harold Gray sure put Daddy and Annie through hard times during the Depression.Although Warbucks almost gets hold of something which could end all depressions, the capitalists and New Deal advocators ruin any chances of success.

Learn how Warbucks and Annie met Punjab, discover another of Annie's animal friends(Pee Wee the elephant),and find out how unfair life can be sometimes to even the best of us.

The endearing quality Annie has is that she never loses hope even when things are at their darkest- as they seem to be a couple of times in this book. Yet the dawns are glorius.

5 out of 5 stars An awesome collection of one of the all-time great comic strips.......2007-03-20

This massive, oversize volume collects ten years worth of classic "Little Orphan Annie" strips, from July 1, 1935 to Christmas Day, 1945... It is some of the most compelling comicstrip reading you'll ever encounter, drawing you in from start to finish with its forceful documentation of the times, from the Great Depression to the end of World War Two. Creator Harold Gray had fairly weird politics, a robust mix of rugged capitalist conservatism, stern optimism and socially-oriented populism, with fiesty, forthright Annie as his eyes on the world. The artwork is a delight, with its bold use of black-and-white, and elegant framing... Mostly, though, there's Annie, always an appealing character, even amid the slow-moving and sometimes wooden dramas... Trust me: if you pick this book up, you'll be very, very happy!

4 out of 5 stars Better than the musical.......2004-12-29

I recently saw a performance of "Little Orphan Annie." I got to wondering about the comic strip. This book has selections from the comic strip from 1935 to 1945. The book is a brick; it is about five pounds. The pages are not numbered, but there are easily 500 pages here. You can read six strips at a time, three on the left, and three on the right. The date for each strip is right above the strip.

It is easy to see why the strip was so popular. This was a hard book to put down. The stories are fun and entertaining. You do have to ignore many unlikely events.

The book shows an interesting contrast between how there have been some great changes over the last seventy years, and how many things are still the same.

For example in one of the threads there is a discussion of how Warbucks might be developing atomic energy. There is another story of Nazis taking over a castle in the United States. Often Annie is in trouble and it is hard to get to a phone. From incidents like this you can see some of the changes over the last seventy years. Nowadays with so many people having cell phones, Annie would have been able to avoid lots of problems with a quick phone call.

Then on the flip side so many of the problems Annie dealt with are motivated by common themes through all of literature, greed, jealousy, malice, and so on. Annie often has to endure some terrible situation, but always in the end things work out.

The only reason I didn't give this five stars is because this book has selections from the ten year period, and huge chunks are missing. Most of the time it isn't that noticeable, but ever once in awhile a story would start to wrap up, and then the book would jump to strips published a couple months later without a complete conclusion. I would rather have had a book with the complete selection of five years, than to have a partial selection over a ten year period.

All in all this is a fun book. If you are looking for some hours of entertainment, and you are interested in knowing more about Little Orphan Annie, this is a good book to read.

Harold Gray had his own philosophy, which is reflected in the Little Orphan Annie strip. This collects the daily (as opposed to Sunday) comic strips through much of World War II. Many of the things depicted then are still with us: Gray had a good finger on the pulse of the human psyche. With all of that, Gray has created a bunch of interesting, often comoplex, characters, many motivated to do their best by a subteen orphan girl.

            4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2006-03-05

In Amazon.com I could not find the book Adobe Photoshop H.O.T.

So I typed in Lynda Weinman for a search engine and resorted to making comments on the book Adobe Photoshop H.O.T. here.

This book was assigned for a class I took on Adobe Elements 2. The class and book have been great sources of knowledge.

I feel compelled to write this review in the hopes that Lynda Weinman will read it. I believe there is one problem with the book format. Although the text is large enough - the illustrations are not.

Let me clarify: The illustrations in this book are actually reproductions of what a student sees on the computer screen as they work Adobe Elements 2 and the book together. No problem. In fact it seems that this would be the most effective way to teach the student.

The problem is that the illustrations are not large enough. Of course it is impossible to do a 1:1 reproduction without making the book as large as a computer screen. Why not? Another option would have been to periodically remind the student that illustrations represent only part of what they will see on the computer on any given page or part of the Adobe program.

In the end this book is a worthwhile purchase for someone wanting to learn Photoshop Elements 3. The information is all there.

            5 out of 5 stars Superb Introduction.......2004-05-26

This is a wonderful introduction to After Effects, a complex application. The author is a born pedagogue and assumes no knowledge of compositing on behalf of the reader. The exercises are excellent, although the detailed re-iteration of each simple task in each lesson can become frustrating, this is a small gripe. You will find your way around this program and its complex interface very easily after reading this book, which is quite an achievement for the author.

If you are not new to digital compositing this book may be too basic, otherwise its a must have.

As a very experienced Final Cut Pro editor, I realized my need to master Adobe After FX to fill in where FCP can't create what I need it to. I've looked at several books, and for a beginner, this book must be the best. With a very clear illustration, CD exercise files, and explanations for every step, it's hard to get lost in the program with this book by your side. I've almost finished the book in less than two weeks and I am already creating motion graphics that would have blown me away 2 weeks ago. For the beginner that wants to learn ALL the basics, you can't go wrong with this book.

Want a straight-forward, lesson oriented, explain-why-you-are-doing-it-this-way-with-the-alternatives-listed method to learn After Effects 5.5? I am experienced with Photoshop and Premiere but new to After Effects. This book is thorough but very easy. It includes ALL the steps so even I can't get lost. The book grounded me in all the basics. When my son returned from snowboarding with video, I used it to produce a wonderfully professional 20 second introduction from scratch and imported it into Premiere. Much better than the Adobe book that came with the program. CD-ROM is included with book.

2 out of 5 stars A watse of time and money.......2002-11-25

This book is totally for beginners who have never been using after effects before. If you already have used after effecrs even for a while , defintly you would never want to refer to this book.Linda books might be good when it comes to web authoring. But as a matter of fact I do not think that it is a good refrence when it comes to digital video editing. I recommend (Creating Motion Graphics with After Effects) written by Trish Meyer, Chris Meyer. This book is really good a part of it covers all the levels from advanced to user. And guess what now the latest version is out covers A.F 5 and 5.5 get that one and you will never regret it ,

                Book Description

This well-researched book provides details of the varied steps that certain Native American groups have used to express their dance ideas — from skips, jumps, and hop steps, to an Indian form of the pas de bourrée. Similarities to Oriental dances, classical ballet, Spanish and Russian variants are considered. 20 black-and-white illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars Good book for undergrads.......2005-04-06

We used this book in our international finance class in univ of chicago. what i have is the 2nd edition but i have to admit this is a really comprehensive and clearly organized book, it is an ideal book for people who are interested in getting a general picture of money, banking and basic exchange rates. one drawback i can think of is the price.

4 out of 5 stars About the MyEconLab attachment to this book.......2005-02-16

If you're an independent learner; that is, not enrolled as a student in a course at a school, OR IF YOU ARE, BUT THE INSTRUCTOR IS NOT PARTICIPATING (Using the MyEconLab software for course materials), and thus can't provide you with a COURSEID, a warning about the MyEconLab study aid attachment to this textbook; the instructions for registering to use MyEconLab are less than candid.

They just say that without a CourseId you can still access "most of the online resources listed." You are directed to a generic Mishkin web site instead of registering at the main MyEconLab portal.

Being an honest person, I used the alternate registration. I was still asked for the ZIP for my school; I used my own. I then got a list of local schools or "Other" to choose from. I chose other, and entered "Independent Learner".

The registration then completed; the confirmation stated it is only good for SIX MONTHS.

If you go to the main MyEconLab Web portal shown in the user manual after registering as a non-student, your user ID will not be recognized. You have to use a generic portal for the Mishkin textbook instead.

                What you get there is:

e-textbook, glossary, FLASH animated graphs, chapter quizzes and Web links from the textbook margins
The Weekly news selection (web links, so may expire; earliest was Aug. 2004)
The "Chapter Readings" in journals, etc. (ditto above)

Since these can expire at their parent web sites, I suggest you take the precaution of printing them out (I use Acrobat to make PDF files or download PDF files if available at the source). Also check out any links in the articles and do the same.

The Readings are probably the best of what you DO get, along with the animations and quizzes. The web links are updated, that's OK if you're not good at figuring that sort of thing out for yourself.

There is also a series of Chapter Appendices, not printed in the book, available with the e-text of the book at the alternate site.

                WHAT YOU WON'T GET:

                "Foundations Interactive" (whatever that is)
"MathXL for Econ" - the math review tutorial (would be nice)
                "Research Navigator"
                "eThemes of the Times"

The last two are a REAL Disappointment to me, because the Navigator (see textbook Preface) is supposed (among other things) to provide "a complete YEAR of search for full-text articles from the New York Times" and "Best of Web Link Library of peer-reviewed web sites." The last is described in the Preface as "thematically related articles from the NYTimes accompanied by critical-thinking questions." I was looking forward to these, because the NYTimes charges $$ by the article for archived (non-current) articles, and this can get expensive in a hurry, and an increasing number of other web sites, including industry association journals are now similarly archive and have paid access only.

So without being enrolled in a class that has an instructor who is using the course material software, you won't be able to access some of the BEST of the advertised materials of the MyEconLab add on.

They could have been clearer about WHAT exactly you would have had access to. They also could have said that the non-student registration is only good for 6 months, since the description of the NYTimes access for a full year (which you don't get at all) might reasonably lead one to infer that the registration is valid for a year.

And I fail to see why they couldn't throw in at least the Math review tutorial, since it wouldn't seem to involve any kind of outside contract or royalty such as the NYTimes access might.

5 out of 5 stars Wow, an Econ book that is actually easy to understand!.......2004-09-30

I'm on Chapter 4 of this book, and I'm surprised at how clear and concise the author is. The sections are broken up very well and provide side titles in case you ever need to flip back to a certain topic.

4 out of 5 stars The best by far of slim pickings.......2004-01-18

I reviewed every Money and Banking text I could get my hands on before selecting Mishkin's text to use while I was an instructor at one of the top universities in the US. Mishkin's text was hands-down the best text. But there weren't a lot of alternatives to choose from. This text gets used in a lot of MBA programs.

The thing I liked most about this text was its comprehensiveness. Mishkin did a far better job than the other text of introducing stock options. And of course, he covered the banking (money multiplier, bnak loans, etc.) side comprehensively. Good job with exchange rates, too.

Weaknesses: Need more on the insurance industry, particularly with the biggest banks now firmly in that business. Need more on financial futures. And finally, I'd like to see a little more mathematical rigor. I supplemented the text in an undergrad class with some more mathematical articles from the economics literature.
