    Book Description

What admirer of a great Renaissance painting has not wished for the chance to approach it closely and examine each tiny detail? This unique book permits just such a close-up view of some of the most beautiful masterpieces in the National Gallery, London. Using photography taken through a microscope, this book shows details from paintings that would not normally be seen: a gem sparkling on a ringed finger, a minute insect, intricate brushwork, the texture of a painted surface.

Each of the macrophotographs in the book documents around a half-inch section of a Renaissance panel painting, revealing the smallest details in works by Lucas Cranach, Jan van Eyck, Fra Angelico, Raphael, and many others. The complete paintings are shown at the back of the book. Beautifully designed and illustrated, this jewel of a book is an irresistible treasure for every art lover.

Considering the specialization of the subject, it is well done. I would have liked more emphasis on the history of velvet, though. However, I think it is a good addition to the fiber enthusiast's collection.

3 out of 5 stars If you love velvet..........2002-09-13

Lots of detail and some fascinating details.

4 out of 5 stars Fashions, furnishings and more.......2001-07-11

Lots of fun for the costume historian, and inspiring for any home sewer, this book shows velvets from about 1450 C.E. to the present and how they were used in fashion and interior decoration. There's also a nice section at the end on the techniques of weaving and dyeing. While the content is great, I do have some complaints about the quality of the book: the captions needed to be proofread, as there are a lot of misspellings and typos; and some of the color reproductions are just muddy enough that one cannot see clearly the details of the fashions. But I don't know of any other book like this one, so it gets my recommendation for costumers and fashion historians.

          Book Description

In this new compilation, the Simpsons travel to the land of Krustonia, Homer Simpson vies for the Springfield wrestling championship, Mr. Burns clones a plant full of Smitherses, and Homer contracts amnesia and thinks he is Radioactive Man. This is the eighth book in our comic book compilation series by Matt Groening.

Here's a look at the Simpsons' latest antics:

#28: Come to the land ruled by the funniest man ever to secede from the United States for tax purposes: Krusty the Clown! See a page torn from our nation's history and a new chapter taped in neatly so the pages don't stick together!

#29: Let's get ready to Ruuuuuuuuuumble! Prepare yourself for a battle royale with cheese as Homer J. throws his fat into the ring in a quest to become the wrasslin' champeen of all Springfield!

#30: Montgomery Burns has fired every one of his employees and has replaced them with clones of Waylon Smithers! Yet, it isn't long before these Smitherses are at each others throats, throwing the plant into chaos as each vies to be the object of Burns' affections! Can the one, true Smithers save the plant before it's torn apart by his neatly dressed, gene-spliced brethren?

#31: Homer Simpson IS Radioactive Man! At least, that's what he thinks after contracting a nasty case of amnesia en route to a costume party. This fusion delusion leads to confusion and forced seclusion in Springfield's foremost mental institution!

4 out of 5 stars Not Quite Up to Simpsons Comics Standards, but Still Fun.......2002-12-22

Despite the cover, there is no western-related comic in this book (probably a good thing). This comic book is funny (it includes a comic book convention survival guide and a look at Lisa's dream house), but Matt Groening and company really raised the bar with some of their other comic books-hence the four star grade.

"Krustonia"-Krusty starts his own utopian nation to avoid paying income taxes. Sounds like something he'd do.

"Flanders' Big Score"-Fun-diddly-fun comic where amateur detective Ned Flanders investigates the case of the missing church fund-raiser money.

"Let's Get Ready to Bumble"-Homer becomes a professional wrestler. Not as good as the other comics in this book.

"Bringing Down Baby"-Short starring Maggie which also includes the infamous baby with the one eyebrow. Only mildly amusing.

"Smitherses!"-The nuclear power plant employees are on strike for a 5 cent per year raise. True to form, Mr. Burns decides that the best solution is to clone a staff of devoted sycophants (i.e. Smitherses). When the Smitherses begin to compete for Mr. Burns' attention-Watch out! This is a funny, imaginative comic.

"Bore Us the Movie Gruel"-Bart and company watch a 1950s film starring Troy McClure (how old is this guy?) and a mule. The usual sarcastic comments are offered.

"Radioactive Homer"-A complicated comic. The gist of it is that Homer believes he is Radioactive Man and joins forces with Leon (insane asylum inmate "Michael Jackson" in the TV episode "Stark Raving Dad") to take down Mr. Burns' "Project Q" (mentioned in Simpsons Comics #1 in the Extravaganza book). Has a very funny ending.

          3 out of 5 stars Krustonia.......2000-07-30

This was an okay book, with nothing exceptional. Starting the book off with "Krustonia" was a big mistake, as it's easily the worst Simpsons comic ever. Once you start reading it, it gets boring, so take my advice, read everything else first, then come back to this one, since I lost enthusiasm after struggling to complete Krustonia for several days. That said, Homer's wresting days are really funny, the Smithers clones are strange, but somehow very entertaining. (Mr. Burns better watch out :) and Homer as Radioactive Man was great, especially to see Leon "Michael Jackson" Komposki back. I also liked the mini-Ned Flanders mystery, and the guide to comic book conventions. If it weren't for Krustonia, this book would be the perfect buy.

          5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2000-01-16

This is his best yet, it was the first I ever got and it is still the best! The four in order of my liking is Smitherses, then Krustonia, then The Boxing One, and last Radioactive Man. But, still they were all awesome

          5 out of 5 stars Funny.......1999-04-05

I think this is Matt Groenings best comic yeat. The simpsons are great and I watch them every day and espeacily on sundays!I think Matts doing a fantastic job.His new t.v.series on fox is going to be just as good as the simpsons.DOH!

          3 out of 5 stars Dumb book.......1999-03-08

It was cool in some parts and bad in others. THe program ia much better. If you want a really good simpsons book try the complete guide to our favourite family.

You should explicity forewarn the perspective buyer about this book. The writing of the book is fine. BUT, it is a big lecture on Christian religion and religious dogma. I would not have bought this book if I had known this. This religious thrust should appear in your book outlines.

I Really enjoyed this book, couldn't put it down. Every little chapter was full of funny and very realatable (if that is a word) items. I loved how she incorporated God in each chapter. I would recommend this book to every woman in America. I don't have my own children but to read about hers and how much she truly loves her family touched my heart. This is a must read!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Informative, entertaining and endearing portrait of Romero........2001-07-01

Paul R. Gagne's book on George A. Romero, charts his career from it's beginnings as a kid with a camera, to being an ad man to doing his debut "Night of the Living Dead" and through the subsequent highs (Dawn of the Dead, Creepshow and Martin)and lows (There's Always Vanilla, Jack's Wife) and everything else in between (Day of the Dead, Knightriders, The Crazies, television series' et al.) up until about 1986 or so.

After a historical background, the book is divided up into a film by film basis and each chapter covers the origins of each project, the inspirations behind them, how they were done, anecdotes from various participants and then conclude with Romero's point-of-view on the particular venture. It's a nice comprehensive format and makes for good reading.

The book also contains a chapter at the end on Savini's work and how it was achieved, a comprehensive filmography, discography and possible future direction for Romero which at the time of purchase (1988) were probably a bit more accurate. Also of note are the large amounts of photos within the text (B&W), and the very nice colour spread in the centre. A very well written and well researched biog/filmography on one of films less understood and less represented auters.

5 out of 5 stars Informative bio is a joy to read........2001-04-27

For those who do not believe that horror icon Romero is an artist passionate about his work I submit this book as a testament that he in fact is. Although hopelessly out of date by now (it ends with a mention of Monkeyshines being his next movie) it still remains a vibrant look at the independant spirit that brings all of Romero's work life. Required reading for Romero fans (both fair weather and die hard). Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The complete George A. Romero story-Kudos to Paul R. Gagne.......1998-10-30

This book is the definative story of the films of George A. Romero. In fact, it's the only book that's soley dedicated to his films. Gagne recounts Romero's humble beginings at Image Ten Inc. working with John Russo, Bill Hinzman, and Russ Streiner. He concludes with Romero's production and writing credits for 'Tales from the Darkside'(The book was published in 1987). The book is very well written, researched, and contains information not published elsewhere. Gagne's writing-style is straight-forward and insightful. Obviously, Gagne is a fan and writes with great care and affinity. This is a magnificent book and is a must for all George A. Romero fans.

                            Book Description

How do highly paid professional speakers put magic and motivation into every talk? Lilly Walters, Executive Director of Walters International Speakers Bureau, reveals their secrets and strategies in this practical, conversational guide. Mark Twain reputedly said it took him three weeks to prepare an impromptu speech, but readers of Secrets of Successful Speakers will do it in days-or minutes. This book spells out the rules in 11 easy-to-follow steps, each accompanied by interactive exercises. Readers will learn to: set objectives before writing; customize the talk for each audience; conquer stage fright; cultivate a reputation as an expert; develop themes for each presentation; organize material in memorable manner; edit for best effect; project a professional "platform image" through personality, voice, and clothes; motivate audiences to change their actions and attitudes; involve listeners by using humor, heart, and audience participation exercises; deal with problems and pitfalls ranging from poor staging and faulty audio-visual equipment to hecklers and questions of ethics. This authoritative and accessible guide also contains fascinating anecdotes of well-known personalities and how they mastered the art of public speaking. It will quickly become the reference of choice for trainers, lawyers, doctors, managers, and everyone who makes presentations or gives talks.

5 out of 5 stars This book is worth its weight in gold!.......2006-07-08

Lilly and Dottie Walters have contributed volumes to the world of professional speaking. All of their books provide veteran and upcoming speakers alike with the resources, tips, and guidelines needed to be successful. This book is another example of the quality and care the Walters provide in all aspects of their speaking enterprise. I found this book to be most helpful in planning and writing my public speaking presentations as well as in my daily lesson preparations as a secondary school teacher. Lilly Walters presents page after page of straight forward approaches to capturing and keeping any audiences attention as well as numerous methods of achieving and reinforcing the exact message you were aiming at delivering. This is a must have on every public speaker's and educator's book shelf. My name is Kelly Croy. You can learn more about me and how I use this excellent book by Lilly Walters on my website at www.kellycroy.com.

2 out of 5 stars Too Many Cooks.......2005-09-07

There are plenty of good books on public speaking - and this is NOT one of them. For several reasons.

First and definitely most importantly - it regularly contradicts itself. For example, on the subject of humor and the person who is to introduce you:

"...If it looks like they are going to read some big long thing, give them some quick funny story to say instead." Dr. Ken Blanchard

"Never give and introducer 'risky' material that requires comic timing." Tom Ogden

So, assuming that Mr Ogden meant "material which requires comic timing is 'risky'," we have two "experts telling us, one straight after the other, to (1) get the introducer to tell a funny story, and (2) avoid asking the introducer to tell a funny story!

This confusion is mainly down to the author's choice to use a vast collection of quotes from people she presumably regards as "expert speakers," interspersed, from time to time, by her own thoughts and observations. Unfortunately, despite her wealth of experience as a head of a "professional lecture agency," or maybe because of it, Ms. Walters has produced a book that is about as superficial as most of the "key note" and "after dinner" speeches I've ever had to witness.

There's a mountain of material here, and SOME of it is genuinely useful, but it's all so mixed up with the dross that you'd have to be something of an expert already in order to know which bits are worth taking notice of, and which are likely to make things worse rather than better. In which case you wouldn't need this book in the first place.

The second important flaw in the book is that it assumes that the "experts" actually know what makes them successful. Which is also unfortunate, since it is widely recognised that "experts" usually have little or no idea as to what their success is really based on. The best they can do is tell you what THEY think they do - hence the conflicting instructions and the highly variable usefulness of the book as a whole.

Thirdly, there is the author's own rather questionable knowledge. In Chapter 5, for instance, there is a section on mind maps, which shows little or no understanding of the subject. To be sure, the author does say, at one point:

"True mind map experts, which I am not, will tell you to use only one word per line along with the pictures."

No they won't. They'll tell you never to use a complete sentence, because if you do you will seriously undermine the main reason for using a mind map. And that's just after they'd tell you that you do NOT have to use pictures all over a mind map, as this author asserts.

The obvious question is "Why describe a technique if you know that you don't really know what you're talking about?" It may fill up some space, but it certainly doesn't do the reader any favours.

If you're the sort of person who gains confidence from getting "Reader's Digest"-sized quotes from a host of big name speakers then you may well enjoy this book. If you want something with a modicum of genuine authority, from someone who writes from an in depth knowledge AND UNDERSTANDING of their subject then you'll need to look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for your Library.......2004-08-21

Any person looking to raise the level of their speaking needs to add this book to their library. I personally own every book Lilly has published. As a professional speaker myself and the author of, "10 Days to More Confident Public Speaking" (Warner Books), I appreciate the value of the information in Lilly's book and I recommmend this book to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars A potent concoction of surefire tips and techniques.......2002-11-08

This is certainly one of the best books on public speaking I've read. The only other work that deserves special mention is Jack Valenti's Speak Up with Confidence. Walters gives surefire tips and techniques that are recipe for a successful presentation that may inspire for years.

Her crisp advice on the main requirements of a speech of "passion and compassion with a purpose" is very potent and often leaps off my mind each time I prepare to instruct or make a speech. Walters has carefully drawn from the "secrets" of public speaking pros and concocted them into a surefire formula for success. What's more, her anecdotes and quotes are both entertaining and memorable.

I found myself a better speaker even after reading and applying steps 1 and 2. Wait till I conquer step 11! Thank you Lilly Walters for an absolutely inspiring and terrific book.
