Fascinating!.......2000-05-14
I found this book to be absolutely wonderful in the way they displayed the clothes and accessories so beautifully. You can see the true elegance, pomp, and magnificence in which the royal family dressed, yet also see how normal they were in that they wore common clothes just like the commonfolk. I highly reccomend this book.

Love Archie Comics; especially the Americana Series!.......2007-02-01
This is one of my favorites from the collection. The characters are drawn beautifully. I love being able to be transferred back to the 50's and all the fads. I wish the book went on forever. Very nostalgic!
ARCHIE MOVE'S INTO THE 1950'S.......2005-05-02
Perhaps no decade in American history, certainly no decade within the past century is more fondly revered than that of the 1950's. World War II was over and the nation was enjoying a time of great peace and prosperity. In the late 1940's, most super hero comics faded from view due to changing tastes. Furthermore, the crusades against comics in the 1950's and the resulting creation of the comics code authority meant stronger restrictions on comics causing many companies to close up shop, notably EC Comics. One character who managed to survive not only the changing tastes but the comics code authority was, of course, Archie Andrews. But even Archie was affected by the new code, believe it or not. There's a rather funny anecdote in the introduction to this volume about how the staff had make sure all scenes of cleavage were covered up. It still didn't stop them from drawing Betty and Veronica very well-endowed however.
This volume moves Archie into perhaps the era that Archie is most associated with, especially by early baby-boomers; the era when Rock-n-Roll first made its influence known on Archie and the gang...the era of sock hops, malt shops and cruising. This trade paperback highlights the entire Archie gang in a collection of hilarious and nostalgic stories, brimming with 1950's allure. Here are a few of my favorite stories from this volume:
"Winner Lose" Archie Comics #64 1953. Archie buys a beat-up boat to compete with Reggie in a big race. Veronica promises all of her boat dates to the winner. Archie comes out the victor but when Jughead crashes the boat, Archie finds he's won the battle but lost the war.
"Safe at Home" Archie Comics #64, 1953. Archie visits Veronica while Mr. Lodge is hosting several potential investors for a new venture. Archie thinks the men are planning to rob the Lodge safe and calls the police. Mr. Lodge is NOT amused!
"Skip, Hop & Thump" Laugh #75, 1956. The first sock hop in Riverdale as Archie explains the concept of the sock hop to Betty & Veronica. The pair compete over the boy's socks but when they can't get into the sock hop, they have a rude welcome waiting for Archie.
"Going, Going, Gown" Laugh #80, 1957. Veronica is bragging about her expensive new gown from Paris that she intends to wear to the big dance. She then finds out that Betty is going to wear an exact copy of the dress that she bought locally. Mr. Lodge gives Betty $50 to buy a new dress. When Veronica shows up at the dance to impress Archie, he is not there. He and Betty are out spending Mr. Lodge's money!
"Wheels of Progress" Laugh #98, 1958. Archie is embarrassed when his aunt gives him a pair of roller skates for his birthday. Betty and Veronica offer to teach him how to skate but he is reluctant...until he gets a look at the blonde bombshell skating instructor!
"Like Real Gone" Laugh #104 1959. In a bit of an end of the era type story, Archie and Jughead bid goodbye to the 1950's by acting like beatniks replete with all the beatnik jargon.
"TNT Hee" Archie #106, 1959. Mr. Weatherbee thinks that Jughead has invented a powerful new explosive formula in the chemistry lab. He's so excited that he contacts Washington. But it turns out that Jughead was just trying to make nail polish for Veronica.
In addition to the wonderful stories there are great pages re-printing many of the classic covers from the 1950's. It's a treat to look back at these fifty year-old stories and see how the characters and fashions changed with the times. A real treasure trove for Archie fans.

Another 'must have' for the Archie afficionado.......2004-07-01
"Archie Americana: Best of the 1950's," is composed of story highlights from the years 1953-1959. Spanning 96 pages, readers will effortlessly breeze through the dozen or so stories basking in the home-spun charm that fans have come to appreciate over the decades. Personally, I feel that the artwork of 'Archie' comics was at it's apex in the 1950's thanks to its great attention to detail and for the fact that character design seemed to have been etched in stone from this point on. While this book will entertain, its true value is in providing historical reference to the serious reader of this series.
This is definitely a GREAT book. Worth buying........1999-02-07

The '50s are a fondly remembered time for many - both those who lived during the decade as well as those who discovered it through movies like Grease and TV shows like Happy Days. They were also the perfect decade for Archie to have his misadventures - whether getting tangled up in the eternal love triangle or incurring the wrath of Mr. Weatherbee, Mr. Lodge and even his father, Archie and his friends scaled new heights of hilarity! Put on your poodle skirt, slick back your hair and don't forget to read this fabulous collection of comedy classics before heading out to the sock hop!

Funny! A Good Book!.......2005-12-16
This is a really good book. It tells you a lot about teenagers and the life they lived back in the fifties. If you like Archie and his funny friends than you defintley want to get this book! Oh yeah, It's HILLARIOUS!!
BASEBALL HOTDOGS, APPLE PIE & ARCHIE.......2005-05-20
Baseball, hotdogs, apple pie...but really, what is more American than Archie Comics? While Archie is now well into his seventh decade (and still looking ever the teen) perhaps the decade most associated with Archie Comics is the 1950's. It was the era of hot rods, Elvis, and malt shops and Archie and the gang were front and center. This is the second collection of Archie stories from the 1950's and this one prominently features Betty and Veronica as most of the stories are reprinted from the Betty & Veronica comic series. This collection features over a dozen stories and also has pin-up pages and cover galleries, displaying those wonderful covers from that bygone era. The love triangle between Archie, Betty and Veronica is in full vigor in most of these tales, as the girls alternately battle, and dump Archie.
Here are just a few of the stories in this latest Americana Series collection:
In "Model Date" from 1951, Betty and Veronica agree to both turn down Archie for a date the next time he asks to teach him a little humility. But then they learn that Archie is out with Jughead's cousin from New York. When the find out the model is a man, Veronica schemes to get a date with him. Then she gets a look at her `model date."
"Coat of Alms" 1955. When Betty is upset about her old clothes, Jughead goes on a quiz show and promptly wins her a new gown and mink stole. When she shows up at a dance, Veronica finds herself as the one envious of Betty's clothes for a change.
In "Kiss and Kill" from 1956, Betty and Veronica find out they are both going steady with Archie and want to kill him. But Jughead uses reverse psychology and tells the girls that it's all their fault that Archie loves them both because they are so beautiful. Jughead suggests a kissing contest to see who gets Archie.
"Rage Before Beauty" 1957. Sneaky Veronica `helps' Archie, Reggie, and Jughead pick out a birthday present for Betty by suggesting a hideous outfit in a department store window. Veronica was so convincing, however, that the plan backfires when the boys end up buying Veronica the awful outfit instead.
"Crest Fallen" 1958. When Veronica, Archie, and Reggie all trace their family trees back to European nobility, they begin acting snooty to everyone else. Miss Grundy takes them down a few pegs when her research uncovers the skeletons in each of their family's closets.
"Never Say Die" 1959. Veronica decides to fight fire with fire by changing her hair color to blonde to woo Archie. The battle of the hair escalates when both girls go red, only Archie doesn't like redheads!
Archie Comics is doing a great job in re-printing the classic tales as they transport you back to these prior decades with all the styles, jargon, and culture that went along with them. The Americana collection series is required reading for any Archie Fan. Wonderful, nostalgic fun!

More Archie goodness.......2004-07-28
If you're a fan of the Archie series you're definitely gonna wanna read this second book of 1950's highlights - a decade that many consider to be the 'high-point' of the series in terms of artistry. While the stories are mostly comprised of Archie-Betty-Veronica love triangles this time around the sheer nostalgia factor will definitely make this an enjoyable read no matter how long its been since you last read an Archie book.
Nice sampling of 50s-era Archie Comics.......2004-01-31
I've loved Archie comics since I was a kid, so the "Americana Series" has been a lot of fun for me. Since they probably weren't anticipating doing a second volume of this when the first book was published nearly a decade ago. it's not surprising that the selection of stories isn't quite as good. Still, they're all classic Archie Comics.
This volume seems to focus mostly on Betty and Veronica, with Archie being little more than a supporting player in most of the stories and with Jughead existing to bail him out of trouble. It's interesting to note how much the characters have evolved over the years while the situation has remained the same -- Betty is the same sweet "girl next door" she always was, but she's not quite as despondant as she used to be. Veronica is still the spoiled rich kid, but she's softened a bit.
It would be interesting, once I've gotten the whole collection, to read the entire "Americana" series in one lump, just to see how much things changed over the years. I've got a new project to work on...

Unmissable! Indispensable for old and new archaelogists alik.......1999-01-22
This is a fabulous book! For it to be out of print is a major tragedy. It is one of the few books which made me laugh out loud in a public library,surrounded by 'silence' notices. Whether you're new to archaeology and need the low down about how pretentious it can be or whether you know this already, the bluffer's guide tells many hilarious truths that archaeologists have tried hard to keep hidden from the public for many years. Time Team it ain't! From the opening gambit that archaeology is essentially a bizarre habit which involves combing through other people's old rubbish to the (sadly true) revelation that a baffled archaeologist will try and make you think they know what they're talking about by describing something as 'having ritual significance' - meaning that they haven't got an **** clue what it is, but sounds impressive, doesn't it ? Having been involved in this bizarre pastime for some years myself, it made me howl with recognition. Buy it !

required archaeology reading you can really dig.......2002-01-01
This is a hoot! Leave it to the Brits! But mostly understandable and hysterical accross the pond too. A worthy complement to "Motel of the Mysteries" in instilling a bit of humility in the trade, and frightfully frighteningly true too.
Very funny..........2000-10-07
this book is hysterical. we found it one night while on a dig in scotland and it passed the time at night very nicely. full of jokes about field workers and interesting shirt slogans. great to bring if your going to be with new people to break the ice
Book Description
Toward the end of the 1980s it looked as if television had displaced film as the photographic medium for bringing Shakespeare to the modern audience. In recent years there has been a renaissance of Shakespearean film by directors such as Kenneth Branagh, Franco Zeffirelli, Peter Greenaway, and Christina Ezard. In this volume, a range of writers study the best known and most entertaining film, television and video versions of Shakespeare's plays, with particular attention given to the work of Olivier, Zeffirelli and Kurosawa, and to the BBC television series. The volume also includes a survey of previous scholarship and criticism as well as a comprehensive filmography.

Book Description
The design of an organisation — the accountability system that defines roles, rights, and responsibilities throughout the firm—has a direct impact on the performance of every employee. Yet few leaders devote focused attention to how this design is chosen, implemented, and adjusted over time. Robert Simons argues that by viewing design as a powerful and proactive management lever—rather than an inevitable outcome of corporate evolution—leaders can maximize productivity across every level of the organisation. Levers of Organizational Design presents a new design theory based on four key yet often underrated categories: customer definition, critical performance variables, creative tension, and commitment to mission.
Customer Reviews:
ONE OF BEST BOOKS ON ORGANIATION DESIGN! FIRST-RATE, RICH IN CONTENT AND VALUE........2007-02-13
A first-rate book on the subject of organizational design.
Chapters focus on:
- tensions of organization design;
- aligning span of attention;
- unit structure;
- diagnostic control systems;
- interactive networks;
- shared responsibilities;
- examples of adjusting the levers; and
- designing organizations for performance.
Central to this book are four key factors that guide effective design decisions: customer definition, critical performance variables, creative tension, and commitment to others.
The book offers great insights and guidance to design an organization that influences how people perform, focus their attention, and how their efforts can be aligned with strategy. Rich in content and value! Very highly recommended.
An OD book with a solid combo of theory and practice.......2005-11-03
Finally, an OD book with a solid combination of theory and practice. The theory in this book is the most comprehensive model for OD I've ever seen. Simons' model incorporates all functional areas of business. He does an excellent job of looking at the whole organizational picture. This is where many authors have fallen short with theories that only cover one or two functional areas of business leaving you to guess at how to incorporate the rest. This cross-functional approach to OD is not just refreshing; it's quite necessary in today's business environment.
Simons' theory is based on levers and sliders. Easy to understand and easy to visualize. Part of the value of the book is that the theory is backed up with practical implementation examples. Like any good learning resource (a.k.a. text book) each chapter provides us with a summary and action steps. I give this book an A+ and consider it a "must read" for anyone in the OD field. It is also recommended for management teams looking to assess their organization design. Using this book will provide the understanding you need to get started.
Eloquent and Essential Practicality .......2005-09-08
Unlike subtitles of so many other recently published business books, the one for Levers of Organization Design correctly identifies its author's primary objective: to explain "how managers use accountability systems" to achieve "greater performance and commitment." Simons thoroughly and brilliantly responds to questions such as these:
What are the nature and extent of tensions of organization design or redesign?
How to get "span of attention" in proper alignment?
What is an appropriate "unit structure"? Why?
Which diagnostic control systems can be most effective? How?
Why are interactive networks essential?
How to establish and then strengthen them?
How should shared responsibilities be determined and then managed?
Then, how to sustain productive collaboration?
Which "levers" of organizational design are most effective? Why?
Which examples best illustrate how to make appropriate adjustment of them?
What are the most effective strategies and tactics when designing organizations for performance?
According to research which Robert S. Kaplan and David P. Norton provide in The Strategy-Focused Organization, only 5% of the workforce understand their company's strategy, only 25% of managers have incentives linked to strategy, 60% of organizations don't link budgets to strategy, and 85% of executive teams spend less than one hour per month discussing strategy. If true, these are chilling statistics which suggest that few decision-makers in any organization (regardless of its size or nature) would be able to answer, clearly and realistically, each of the questions listed previously. Hence the urgency of their reading Simons' book. I also urge them to check out the several works co-authored by Kaplan and Norton.
