    2 out of 5 stars Narcissistic.......2007-07-25

Letters to a Young Artists is not worth reading. Anna Deavere Smith is a gifted artist herself, but her book inevitably springs from the assumption that she has profound wisdom to bestow. She never gets out from under that narcissism. I lost respect for her after reading her book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Advice For Artists Old And Young.......2007-05-07

I bought Anna D's book at age 55 because I wanted to have a little inspiration from one of the great theatre artists of our time...I only wanted a little -- she gave me a lot. If you need an encouraging word at this point in your career -- whatever point that is, and I say, "who doesn't?" -- you must buy Anna's words asap. I got the audio version because to be surrounded by her ringing and truthful voice speaking the words she wrote is REALLY something. Reviewed by Katherine

4 out of 5 stars Paradoxes in looking at art and life.......2007-04-08

Actress and playwright Anna Deavere Smith wrote a series of letters, collected as Letter to a Young Artist (2006; Anchor Books) about "the rules of the road in the business of making and selling art." Certainly the book has received high praise from sources including actors, editors, authors, and museum directors. I found my own reactions more ambivalent, partly due to a prejudice I have regarding how people in the arts tend to talk about themselves and their work. Let's get that out first. Mind you, I'm a writer, photographer, and am often involved in various ways in theatre, so I'm not indifferent to the arts. Yet I dislike the term artist, because its context has come to emphasize the individual at the expense of the craft. But to many, the label is important and they tend to focus on the primacy of the "artist," not the art. Sometimes in the book that is the sense I have of Smith. For example, she writes:

"I think of art as work, so I worry about going off into the stratosphere with theoretical questions like, 'What is art? What is truth?' ... If we get caught up in pondering these questions, we sell ourselves short. How we live, and how we treat one another, is what is at issue."

Yet then she goes on to nothing less than questioning the nature of art. Although she is trying to pass something on, I had the sense that she really usually doesn't know the answers and often is as puzzled as the fictional BJ, whom she addresses. That, to me, made the book intriguing. At times I found the contradictions gave me material for thought. In one section, she discusses the fictional difficulty that BJ faces when his or her school is about to turn a painting studio into a state-of-the-art biology lab and move the studio into a basement. On one hand she arguing about the uselessness of such a lab "ridiculous." Nevertheless she still goes on to write:

The awareness of the importance of the artist's vision always needs to be enhanced in schools. it is shocking to me that the argument continually needs to be made--but it does.

Now think of the biology students who for some apparently extended period of time had to make due with second-rate facilities. Also, it is easy to take some of her stated reactions, like being spell-bound by a given recorded performance of a song, and as self-indulgences unless you can remember having similar moments. (I can remember once being so floored by hearing a guitar transcription of Bach's Goldberg Variations that I stood still for a while just listening, and then immediately bought a copy.)

There are times that I got the sense she was missing the very point of an experience that she was trying to communicate, such as her father telling her, "Don't take it too hard," on finding that she didn't win a Tony. "I could feel his resignation about his failures in his own life," Smith wrote. Maybe that's what he felt, or perhaps, in his 70s, he knew that the real failure is to take such ephemera as important when in the most profound sense they mean nothing. After all, when Herman Melville died, the critics had long written him off as an unimportant writer, rather than one of the foundations of American literature. J.S. Bach in his day was considered a second-rate composer. How foolish on reflection is our collective wisdom, and how more foolish to spend precious life paying attention to it.

Nevertheless, there is a lot of good in the book. Smith well understands the practicalities of art - that there are power structures one will deal with and that a Tony might well mean the difference between a show continuing or closing. Those are certainly lessons that those in the arts need to learn, that they will be engaged in commerce, whether they like it or not. Ultimately, I found that reading the book and engaging with the author led to my rethinking things, and whether I agreed with Smith or not, as always it is a useful exercise.

    4 out of 5 stars Bedside Reading.......2006-10-09

Anna Deavere Smith knows what it's like--the struggle of the artist, the cold night of the soul when sometimes you feel punished for being a visionary, and she gets a lot of it down on paaper in this book of letters modelled to a certain degree on Rilke's famous LETTERS TO A YOUNG POET. She's seen it all in her multi-tasking career, and if she doesn't know it, she has a host of excellent friends to ask, everyone from Wynton Marsalis to Paul Van De Carr. James Baldwin, whom she met when she was just a struggling actor, told someone that she reminded him of "Lorraine" (Hansberry, the playwright who wrote A RAISIN IN THE SUN) and this overheard compliment sustained Anna Deavere Smith through many a disheartening audition. She's been on THE WEST WING and she played the mother in the movie of RENT. It's a bedside book you might give to any young friends you might have, or hope to influence. They'll read a few passages and take heart.

It gets docked one star for its relentless name dropping. We know she's at the very top of the tree, but she doesn't miss a beat about talking about famous friends, or people she's met in the publis sphere, and some of her enthusiasms get a little embarrassing. Did she have to tell us that Lauren Hutton should win Kennedy Center honors for her smile? That's the kind of thing Louella Parsons used to say, and it didn't sound any more sincere the first time around. And her inability to say a negative thing about any of her friends grows tiresome, especially when she says that "Naomi Campbell has presence" or brags that Condoleeza Rice came to one of her performances when they were colleagues at Stanford. Please, ADS, draw a line somewhere!

Though to be fair she does spoof her own propensity for the spotlight. She's not without humor, it's just a little weird to be writing a whole book of letters to an imaginary young girl, or is it? I think the scheme helps her incorporate different journalistic assignments she's been given over the years. For example, the imaginary teen is supposed to be a painter, so ADS gives an account of interviewing Brice Marden, "and just like you guessed, he is indeed tremendously sexy." Such double dips are a commonplace in occasional books of this kind, but we expected a little bit more from the genius who gave us TWILIGHT LOS ANGELES and FIRES IN THE MIRROR.

    4 out of 5 stars (RAW Rating: 4.5) - A Must Read.......2006-06-17

Actress, teacher, and creator of an acclaimed series of one woman plays, Anna D. Smith gives some valuable incite about artist and their world. This book consists of a series of letters she writes to an imaginary young artist she calls BJ. But the letters are for artists of all ages and of any art form. She shares the rules of the road in the business of making and selling art.

Ms. Smith's stories are about her life, the influence by other artists, students, scholars, and activists. About how to unleash your potential, awaken your self mastery, and cement your power base. And about how to corral the phenomenal influence from audiences and people you may never meet.

With two Obie Awards and nominations for two Tony Awards, she challenges the next generation to believe in their vision as well as their dreams. It is her belief that an artist should take what is complex and make it simple. And to do that it takes skill, human understanding, stamina, courage, and heart. LETTERS TO A GREAT ARTIST is direct, personal, and encouraging. This is a must read, particularly for aspiring artists.

I was looking for a good reference book on Native American Costume. What I recieved is a reference book on Colonial fashion, not quite what I expected. However, I'm sure it would be a good book for someone researching European costume in the New world. The book is mostly text supported by illustrations.

          Book Description

Mother Goose is a single mom who has to endure all of her pets' capers. No matter what, she loves Grimmy, the irrepressible bull terrier she thinks of as her baby.

Grimmy is a dog lover's dog. Happy-go-lucky, he's a bon vivant with a hefty appetite for fun, mischief, and yesterday's trash. He loves overindulging, chasing cars, and hanging out with his buddy, Attila.

Attila is the high-strung cat who lives with Mother Goose and Grimmy. Hardly living up to his namesake, Attila is an endearing mix of neurotic apprehension and clueless gullibility. Despite his vulnerabilities, Attila craves understanding and a playmate, and Grimmy is always ready to oblige his feline friend with some lively antics.

Mother Goose's eccentric household has entertained readers for 20 years. Distributed daily and on Sundays, Mother Goose and Grimm appears in more than 650 newspapers nationwide, boasts a readership of 100 million fans, and consistently ranks as a favorite strip in newspaper surveys.

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Mother Goose and Grimm: a 20 yr. treasury .......2007-02-13

I have been a fan of Mother Goose & Grimm since I ran across them some 15 years ago. This is an excellant introduction to their antics, and a reminder to those who have enjoyed them thru the years. It is interesting to note how the strip has changed and is still fun to read the older one's even after all this time. Thank you Mike Peters for giving me a smile in the morning.

5 out of 5 stars Mike Peters, demented genius!.......2007-01-05

If you are a continuing fan or new to his work, Mike Peters' wacky, wonderful world of Mother goose and Grimm is sure to appeal to readers of all ages. My personal favorites are the enegry and craft of his drawings, spare but always a pleasure to look at (the man can draw, unlike sooooo many so called "comic strips" found in current newspapers) and he has one truely twisted sense of humor, now that alone should get you to read this book. I've changed newspapers to follow his cartoons, now you can get some of his best in a great oversized collection, which does them justice. Oh... and Grimm is my ideal dog, and every cats worst nightmare, what's not too love?

          4 out of 5 stars Great Fun.......2006-10-28

Any time I find life getting too serious, I just check in with Grimmy, and his antics are guaranteed to lighten my mood. Mike Peters has created a cast of lovably eccentric characters, and endless mischief for them to get into. Only one beef with the book... In the comic strips, one story line sometimes goes on for several strips, and those are usually the funniest ones. I would like to have seen those complete "series" in the book rather than just individual strips. Still, it's always good for a laugh.

5 out of 5 stars For other instruments..........2007-03-17

I notice that the guitar edition's reviews are placed under the mandolin and banjo tab editions as well, so I would just like to say that they are much like the guitar edition. All instrument formats feature exact transcriptions for the songs that feature that instrument (i.e. "man of constant sorrow" and "hard time killing floor blues" are transcribed note for note in the guitar version) often including arrangements of the melody for other songs that may not actually be heard on the soundtrack (i.e. there is no mandolin heard on "big rock candy mountain", but the mandolin book includes an arrangement that sounds nice anyway. Also, many times the mandolin or dobro parts are arranged for guitar in the guitar edition on songs like "you are my sunshine"). btw-For the reviewer who asked, yes Norman Blake's instrumental version of "man of constant sorrow" is transcribed in full in the guitar edition, but Blake plays it with a flatpick, not fingerstyle. It is very hard to tell the difference by ear, but amazon offers many bluegrass guitar instructional books that cover this method, known as "cross picking".

4 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for..........2006-02-28

True... it's only some of the songs, but it has the two main ones that I,and I'm sure, many were hoping it would. Namely, "Killing floor blues", and for the guy who asked below, the fingerstyle version of "Man of constant sorrow".
It appears to be a little advanced for real beginners (everything is advanced for us) , but those who really want to learn these songs will have everything that they need to give it a go.

3 out of 5 stars Question about this book.......2006-01-02

Last time I checked, an a capella song did not include a guitar part to it, which just might be the reason that "Down to the River to Pray" was not included in a guitar tab book... So don't complain about something that stupid, people. You're buying a freaking guitar tab book, so expect it to have guitar tabs in there!

              Book Description

Joel and Ethan Coen are among America's best-loved and most lauded independent filmmakers. With their latest work, O Brother, Where Art Though?, The Oscar-winning team returns to the period-piece films of their earlier career (Miller's Crossing, Barton Fink, The Hudsucker Proxy) and showcase once-again their pitch-perfect ear for hilarious and outrageous dialogue, as well as their penchant for the fantastic.

Based on Homer's Odyssey, the movie stars George Clooney as Ulysses Everett McGill, along with Coen-mainstay John Turturro, and Tim Blake Nelson as fugitives from a chain gang who embark on a mystical and musical journey through 1930s Mississippi. History and allegory are expertly entwined as, along the way, the three escapees encounter a blind prophet, are tempted by sirens, do battle with a Cyclops (in the form of a one-eyed Klansman), fall in with George "Baby Face" Nelson on a bank heist, and cut a blues record with a young guitar prodigy who bears a striking resemblance to the real-life Robert Johnson.

5 out of 5 stars Coens Are Truly Learning How To Write!.......2001-03-23

This is a fun and wacky screenplay to read! It really puts images into your mind that will make you laugh and wonder. I haven't even seen the movie yet, and I still was able to "get" the jokes and laughed a lot. Just think to yourself, "This is going to be a lot like Raising Arizona" and you'll figure it out.

Ranks right up there with the Coens' Fargo script, which is also a good read.

              5 out of 5 stars Required reading.......2000-12-30

I've been a fan of the Coens' movies for years and I do believe I've figured out a way to enjoy them more thoroughly: READ THE SCREENPLAY. There's no writing that's better in the movies right now. I'm not a film maker, I'm not a script writer, I'm not a director, I'm not an actor, I'm not a movie critic, I'm not even the damn guy who tears the ticket and stands behind that big velvet rope sayin' "To your right" or "To your left." All that I am is a fan of the movies as well as a fan of literature. These guys know how to make words create people and they do it well time after time.

Specifically "O Brother ..." is a screenplay that mixes Homer with Bluegrass with Old Movies with (whether the Coens know it or not) Mark Twain and folks along those lines. In fact, there's a scene in Huck Finn in which Huck states he'd prefer his dinner all cooked together in one pot so that the juices swap around and make things go better. That's a pretty good metaphor for "O Brother ..." Rather than the screenplay that's about hicks or racism or a woman scorned, the Coens mix it all up and believe me things go better that way.

This is the literature of our time. You should watch AND READ these movies.

                              1 out of 5 stars a cold deck.......2007-01-20

While in purely technical terms this is a completely servicable deck in set up- I find the imagery contained therein cold and heartless. I am quite used to abstract art in my tarot cards- but the computer generated imagery followed by the very out-there connections made this a disappointing deck to me for anything but simply reading the minor and major arcana by their basic meanings.

There is also a poor choice in the major Arcana for 'The Hanged Man'. Evidently no one warned the artist of this deck that inverting a holy symbol, such as Christ upon his Cross from christian belief, is demeaning and defiling of it.

5 out of 5 stars The Crow's Magick Tarot Deck.......2006-03-11

This deck has beautiful color and metallic imagery that captures your eye against the black card back. It is a great deck to look at and use after learning from white card backs. It feels like a new level of tarot reading. Truly capturing the magic of the crow and incorporating other animal magics as well. I use about 8 different decks, and this one is my favorite for evening readings.

5 out of 5 stars magical-so much to absorb and deeper than you first realize.........2006-01-24

Truly magical and deeply evocative, this deck is very powerful and goes beyond traditional symbolism seen in most decks. This is far more than just a computer generated deck, it is a powerful tool to the subconscious and takes someone capable of seeing beyond the immediate to truly use it.

5 out of 5 stars Divine and Enchanting!.......2003-04-10

This is definitely tops on my top ten favorite decks. I have been reading the tarot cards for people for several years, and I've used two or three decks before, but this one just stuck with me through the years. I have another box of this deck, unopened, just in case I lose the one I use (which will never happen).

Traditional 78 card deck, 22 major arcana and the minor arcana. The World is replaced by the words "The Universe". I would say 96% of the cards have fantastic, computer-generated graphics that are just dark and gothic. I read an interview with the author of this deck, Londa Marks, and she said this is her tribute to the animal kingdom. I was also intrigued that what inspired her to create the Crows Magick Tarot was she was lonely about the loss of her son. When she completed work on this deck, by coincidence or miracle, she was united with her son!

There are two keywoards that are printed on each card, but I personally find them quite misleading. This is by no means a beginner card. Experienced tarot card readers will either immediately connect to the fascinating imagery, or find their way around them. The astrological symbols printed on each card are also useful. For example- the Emperor has the Aries symbol on it.

For the advanced reader, I suggest that you find the softcover book that used to be very much available. Because this deck depicts mostly animals and birds, it would be useful to find out the characteristics of the animals on this deck. I also suggest that when you use this for readings, be really on a very meditative state so that you will see further into the images on the cards.

I give this deck five out of five. Thank you, Londa!

4 out of 5 stars Amazing and Enchanting.......2002-10-17

I was first attracted to this deck when I saw it in a specialty store in downtown Manhattan, NY. I was quite intruiged by the cover art of the box and was drawn to it and bought it.

My personal choice of decks are those of the modern theme. I find classical decks to be a tad boring. Crows Magick Tarot deck is a VERY modern deck, with clear images of creatures: crows, bears, lizards, etc. This deck is definitely not something for those who are just beginning to learn the tarot. The thing about this deck is that you will be moved to another world where your visions will be varied, and you will also find it useful to use the animals as metaphors to translate them into real people. The most important factor to consider when using this deck for reading is putting yourself in a lucid state of mind, trusting your intuitions, and tapping into your subconscious.

The artwork is enchanting, dark, but not gothic. Ignore the keywords printed on the cards because they are misleading. The accompanying booklet is also a bit off, so I completely ignored it.

I've heard on some tarot card forums that they have used this deck for spells. I'm quite familiar with spell casting as a Wiccan, but I wouldn't even attempt to do that with this one. It would just be irreverent.

This is by no means a beginner deck. If you're just starting out with tarot, try Rider-Waite, but not this one.

This is my second best deck, the first one of course is the Vertigo Tarot, which has now gone to oblivion.

                              Book Description

Most businesses -- regardless of size -- have a strategy for locating highly motivated candidates. And most businesses and managers can convince people to come to work for them. BUT...do these same businesses have a formula for retention? The engergy and enthusiasm employees have depends as much on the work environment as it does on their own motivation.

Behind every boardroom door is the issue of how can one do a better job of letting employees know they are important...that they count. All segments of the economy are scrambling for good workers. Some industries are starved for workers. Others have filled all of their available slots, but don't have a clue on how to keep those employees happy and those slots filled permanently.

Carol Hacker, an educator, speaker, author and one of the nation's leading human resource skill-builders, brings her two decades of experience to the pages of this enlightening book. Let her provide you with a full year's worth (and more) of ideas that she has shared with the management of many Fortune 500 corporations and small enterprises alike. Let "366 Sure Fire Ways to Let Your Employees Know They Count" go to work for you.
