    Book Description

This fascinating volume explores how research, craft, and technology are united in the Art Institute of Chicago’s mission to preserve its collection and further art-historical knowledge. Addressing the many challenges conservators face, the publication highlights their work on objects from throughout the museum, including books, furniture, electronic media, paintings, photographs, posters, sculpture, and textiles.

An introductory essay traces the development of the profession and its specific history at the Art Institute. Case studies written by the museum’s conservators and curators examine diverse works ranging from an ancient Egyptian statue of Osiris to Bruce Nauman’s video Clown Torture. The authors explore how they determine appropriate treatment, uncover an artist’s intentions and techniques, and employ pathbreaking new technologies.

All profits from the sale of this book go to the ForAllKids Foundation dedicated to children's charities. If that isn't reason enough to purchase this wonderful book, just know that you and your children will have countless laughs because of it.

I have three girls myself, and they absolutely love this book. The whole family enjoys the countless hours of entertainment that it provides.

Over the years, Rosie O'Donnell has received an amazing amount of jokes that children all over the world sent to "The Rosie O'Donnell Show." In this hysterically cute book, O'Donnell compiles a bunch of her favorites that she guarantees to bring smiles and laughter to your day. Each page of this book is loaded with humorous jokes that children took the time to send in. The jokes are often complimented with funny drawings, that give the book a much needed personal touch.

This book is a real winner, and a must for any family with children. It will not dissappoint.

                            Book Description

Post-war Cinema and Modernity explores the relationship between film and modernity in the second half of the twentieth century. It begins with essays analyzing new post-war forms of film narrative and responses to the filmic innovations of the 1960s and the question of modernism. Pasolini's landmark polemic on the cinema of poetry is a vital springboard for the later critiques of time and the image, subjectivities and their narrative transformation, and the topical question of film and postmodernity. A discussion of changes in film technology and cinematic perception extend to the questions of film documentary. Finally, there is a focus on cinematographers and their filmic collaboration.

The second section, International Cinema, places filmmaking and filmmakers in a social and a national context. It brings together landmark essays which contextualize feature films historically, yet also highlight their aesthetic power and their wider cultural importance. Filmmakers discussed include Ozu, Welles, Bresson, Hitchcock, Godard, Egoyan, Fassbinder and Zhang Yimou.

Contributors include: Nestor Almendros, Jacques Aumont, Andre Bazin, Noel Burch, Scott Bukatman, Michael Chapman, Rey Chow, Terry Comito, Timothy Corrigan, Angela Della Vacche, Gilles Deleuze, Peter Harcourt, Frederic Jameson, Bruce Kawin, Krzystof Kieslowski, Vassiliki Kolocotroni, Teresa de Lauretis, Colin MacCabe, Christian Metz, Tania Modleski, Laura Mulvey, Bill Nicholls, John Orr, David Pascoe, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Duncan Petrie, Donald Richie, Larry Salvato, Dennis Schaefer, Paul Schrader, Susan Sontag, Andrei Tarkovsky, J.P. Telotte, Paul Virilio, Peter Wollen, Ismail Xavier, Denise Youngblood.

First biography of the genre-defying, pioneering guitarist, songwriter, hell-raiser, and ambient hero, whose album Solid Air is still hailed as a classic. Spanning five decades, Glasgow-bred, hard-man John Martyn's ongoing musical career has been as volatile as his hard-drinking life. He innovated a unique musical style that placed him somewhere between Clapton and Tom Waits. Maintaining a high quality of work since the 1960s, he has survived as an acclaimed cult artist with a devoted following.

                              3 out of 5 stars You won't get stuck..........1999-01-05

This one's a really tough call. If you own Metal Gear Solid, and are stuck in a particular area, or need some tips getting past a boss, then look no further than this guide; this book gives a very precise walkthrough of the game. What it does fail to do, however, is provide DETAILED maps of each location, and reveal to players some things that can be found by backtracking (namely some pretty cool, yet unessential items). This is something to consider when considering a strategy guide for any game. In the case of MGS, there are 5 known published guides, but this one I feel does the best job in their organization and presentation of the material; there just wasn't enough of it, and not enough detail in what was there (for some players, at least). There was just too much of the game that was sparsely covered, or not covered at all (i.e. replay options, VR training mode). And if a book starts a section on pointless secrets, such as the hidden ghosts found in the game, it should be complete--after all, what are people spending their money on a guide for? But given the fact that few of the other guides even make mention of this, it's more trivial than the above-mentioned. On a positive note, the weapon, item, and tactics sections were very well presented, as reasons are given when, where, and why to use the specific pieces of equipment at your disposal. If deciding on a guide for this game, the one you choose depends on the type of guide you're looking for--if you're stuck and want a walkthrough and a more detailed instruction book, go for this one, hands down. But if you're willing to settle for a bit less organization, and thrive on more game detail, decent maps, background info, and other stuff, you'd most likely be better off with one of the official guides. It's your call.

4 out of 5 stars A Solid guide, but it has a few holes........1998-11-05

If you want a guide that's direct and to the point, Sandwich Islands Publishing's (SIP) Metal Gear Solid Survival Guide is what you want. The book provides a simple picture-and-caption layout to help you easily find what you need. It's straight forward and you don't have to do a lot of reading to find out what you want to know. The only drawback is that some detailed information is lost in this manner, but it's up to you to decide what you want. Through parts of this review, I will be making references to Versus's MGS guide for comparisons.

The maps detail almost every area of the game with the locations of all the items that can be found. The guide put out by Versus has maps but the item locations are nowhere to be found on them. However, the only thing they managed to put on the maps was the security levels of the doors which, ironically, is missing from SIP's maps. While I'd like to have both, I'll take the item locations.

The walkthrough proceeds step-by-step and anyone can follow along. You go from one picture to the next with simple, solid instructions. The Versus guide seemed to be filled with lots of clutter amidst the walkthrough. The only down side is that I found some of the strategies a little on the light side, especially for the "bosses". This is one aspect that I felt Versus' guide did a very good job on. Their guide had multiple, detailed and effective tactics for dealing with each encounter.

While I consider myself an "advanced player", the book did detail several details that I overlooked the first time through the game. There are several places where little secrets and Easter Eggs are in the game but again, this was sparse in comparison with the Versus guide. I also found that the rankings chart had some holes on how to get each rank. The rank shown on the screenshot on the previous page ("Grizzly") was conspicuously missing from the chart. The SIP guide also has a partial list of the "Ghosts", but no screenshots of those and no updates on the Web Site.

Aside from all of that, the biggest disappointment for me was that the VR Training mode was completely M.I.A. from the SIP guide. Sure you don't need to do anything in here to finish the game, but I found it one of the most challenging aspects of the game! A section on this mode is definitely needed.

Sandwich Island Publishing's Metal Gear Solid Guide does what it sets out to do, which is to provide a walkthrough of the adventure. It has some good strategies for staying alive, however, I wouldn't consider this guide to be complete. The price slightly higher than the Versus guide too, which is a bit of a drawback considering that the Versus guide also contains a lame poster and some useless (but somewhat interesting) info on the real life aspects of things found in the game.

                              Book Description

Laurie Beth Jones, management expert and business consultant extraordinaire, noticed that none of the personality/temperament profiles in the market today, none of them provided a tool that was simple, visual, intuitive, and powerful enough to create a shift in thinking as well as relating. So she developed The Path Elements Profile (PEP), which can be used in recruitment, placement, retention, team building, and customer relations as businesses transform many individuals into a harmonizing, humming force for good. Within the framework of the book will be scriptural examples as well as modern day business stories.

Based upon the elements of Earth, Water, Wind and Fire, the Path Elements Profile helps determine both individual and team behavioral tendencies that affect everything from career choice to daily "to do" lists. We choose to act on what we value, and each element type values very different things:

PART I of this book provides an overview of the elements themselves as individual personality types. Jones will explain each element's strengths and challenges and will have the readers identify their own as well as those of their team members.

Then in PART II, readers will assess their teams. There are 28 one-day principles, that, if followed will take readers on a simple yet radical journey to a transformed workplace.

INCLUDES an Assessment Test for Your Team's Elemental Strengths and Weaknesses

4 out of 5 stars Great Material, Could Have Been Better Written.......2006-06-05

The material here presented by Laurie Beth Jones is excellent and provides tremendous insight for personality studies. Unlike other personality profile models which possess types difficult to grasp and to inter-relate, this model provides the user with common elements which are easy to understand and simple to intertwine. For example, we all understand the nature of fire, and we all understand the result of fire and water being mixed together. Other personality profiles models fall far short of this one.

The only reason I didn't give this book five stars is that the style is too "earthy." Being a fire/wind myself, I found it cumbersome to wade through all the detailed explanations and examples. Overall however, it is a great volume -- I recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars The Four Elements.......2006-02-22

I have found this book to be life-changing in the sense of gaining an understanding of not only my personality traits and needs but also of those on my team. As a result, I have been better able to meet their needs and they in turn have been better able to meet the needs of our business. Having read and worked through Laurie Beth Jones book, "The Path", this book, "The Four Elements of Sucess", became a natural and necessary extension to our continuing growth and progress. I strongly recommend this book to anyone whether for business or personal life. If all it does is give you a better understanding or yourself or of those around you, that in itself can be priceless.

4 out of 5 stars Earth, Wind, Water, Fire.......2006-02-13

Laurie Beth Jones, author of Jesus, CEO and a successful business consultant has written an interesting book on personality profiling, The Four Elements of Success (2005, Thomas Nelson). Personality profiling is not new. Many of us are familiar with the Myers-Briggs Type Indicators and DISC relational profiling tools. Others will remember Tim Lahaye's books on transforming our personal temperament such as Spirit-Controlled Temperament and Transformed Temperaments. Another useful personality profiling tool is the enneagram. All these are time tested personality profiling tools.

What is new and distinctive about Jones' Path Elements Profile (PEP) is her use of the four elements: earth, wind, water and fire to describe the human personality. Under these four elements, there are 16 possible personality blends: earth, earth/wind, earth/water, earth/fire, water, water/wind, water/earth, water/fire, wind, wind/water, wind/earth, wind/fire, fire, fire/wind, fire/earth and fire/water. Each represents a personality type. In her book, Jones has documented the various types.

Generally a person with a fire personality is one whose strengths are being exciting, passionate, intense, and confrontational and but has a tendency to burn out easily. Fire personalities dislike boredom, sameness, routine, boundaries, sharing the spot light and apathy.

Earth personality includes stability, predictability, orderliness and long term planning. The earth personality weaknesses are changes, sudden movement and too much spontaneity.

Water's strengths include its vitality, people centred, flexibility and team player. Its weaknesses are its need to please people, difficulty in saying no and tendency to lose its identity in others.

Wind personalities are spontaneous, forward movement and the ability to move others. Wind people like changes, new ideas and upward and inspiring things. Their weaknesses are their restlessness, impulsiveness and like the wind, their ability to stir things up and then leave.

The aim of this elemental profiling is to discover how people can work together in teams. For example, teaming a `fire' with `water' will result in confusion while a team full of `earths' will need a `fire'. The use of the elements may sound New Age which Jones assures her readers that it is not so. However it will appeal to many in Asia who are familiar with the increasing popularity of Feng Shui. I find it fascinating that Jones uses the four elements not only to explain the various human personalities but also for developing compatible team building. It sounds interesting and may be a powerful tool to understand human beings and human relationships in a community.

                              2 out of 5 stars pagan astrology.......2005-07-17

I'm only half way through the book but have noticed that approximately one half of the words are incorrectly put under the wrong element. So I give it a two and one half stars. The premise is great, but lets face it, it's pure pagan astrology, Fire, Water, Air and Earth. There is a personality system called WORDTYPES that admits to it's astrological origins that is much better. But I do suggest reading this book as it gives you the basic idea of elemental astrology. Personally, I think that this system is going to change the world.
