Customer Reviews:
A bit disappointed.......2006-11-29
This book is chock full of photos and information...I was a bit disappointed in the quality of the images though. I understand that the original photos are old, but I think the print quality in the reproduction on the publishing end might have been better. Fine if info only is what you are looking for, but if you are making copies to include in a project...don't expect too much.
For those interested in historic fashions.......2006-11-04
I liked this book because, although it is mostly studio portriats of Victorians, they are often in everyday dress. If you like old photographs, you like this book, and if your looking for some 'design' elements for historic costumes then you'll love this book.
Fantastic photos!.......2006-06-27
Costume resources from this period tend towards drawings from period magazines, and use highly stylized model forms. This great collection of pictures shows a wide range of people, in a fairly wide range of clothing types. The limitations of period phots are that the clothing is almost always the fanciest outfits the person owns, and does not reflect day to day wear. Other photos are clearly theatrical costume, but the author has clearly identified them as such, even where the oroginal information is missing.
As with any black and white source, colors are left to your imagination, but the details of finsh and construction that can be gleaned from the photos makes this a necessary tool in researching clothing of this era. Teamed with a Harper's Bazaar drawing reference, and an accessory reference, and you are ready to start making your own victorian clothing!
Entertaining and informative........2006-01-26
Kristina Harris won my applause in her introduction, where she says that knowledge of costume AND knowledge of photographic processes must be used together for maximum accuracy in dating pictures. Seems obvious, but the obvious is seldom stated. She is certainly well-schooled in both fashion and photography. However, neophytes will find it difficult if not impossible to recognize each photographic process even with the best of written descriptions. This skill is attained through experience.
Readers may also be in danger of inaccurate dating if they take the guidelines provided in this book too literally. For instance, the popularity of carte-de-visite photographs may have peaked in the 1860s in Philadelphia, but they do not even appear until 1869 in frontier areas and are certainly more typical of the 1870's in Ontario.
The chief strength of this book as a resource is in the captions to the illustrations, which include the name and location of the photographer, the photographic format, the name of the sitter(s) if available as well as a few comments to indicate significant aspects of the costume. We don't have to jump to endnotes: the information is right there. Bravo!
Harris also knows to use "circa" (c.) to indicate that the date is a best guess. --And therein lies a weakness. This is yet another work in which photographs have been chosen to illustrate a history, as opposed to basing history on dated photographs as documentary evidence.
The warning that dates written on backs of photographs are "frequently added long after the photograph was taken" disquieted me. Although Harris is absolutely correct to warn us never to make assumptions, I worry that beginners will devalue what might be critical evidence. The fact is that folks often wore out-of-date or very personal choices in dress and that 'questionable' date may turn out to be right.
I gave this book three stars out of five for the above reasons, and because it is neither indexed nor sourced. An index based on photographer/city/sitter would have been very useful, and there is no bibliography.
Book Description
Over 280 rare photographs document the clothing of ordinary men, women, and children from the 1840s through the 1890s, in what appears to be their Sunday best. Bustles, hoops, pantalets, shirtwaists, top hats, waistcoats, bowlers, other Victorian-era attire, as well as hairdressing and tonsorial styles. Introduction to fashions of each decade.
Customer Reviews:
Good reference source, but ..........2006-01-26
This book contains useful illustrations representing all ages and classes of American society. Ms Dalrymple wins my approval by basing some of her conclusions on dated photographs; in other words, she uses photographs as documentary evidence, not just as illustrations.
-- But important source information, ie. the format of the photograph, the photographer's name and geographical location, etc. has been moved to the endnotes, and the captions consist of stating the obvious; ie. "man in patterned trousers". With a few exceptions, the captions do not explain why the photographs were selected for the book and do not enhance the illustration. In her well-written chapter introductions, the author demonstrates her knowledge of the field and uses interesting and significant quotations from primary sources. (I like the footnotes.) So I wonder... was there an editorial decision made to "dumb-down" a potentially useful piece of work?
Finally, reproduction of the photographs is adequate, but not exciting. It is sometimes difficult to see costume detail.
Useful and interesting document on Victorian costume........1997-12-11
The Victorians put their (mostly) best foot forward in this collection of period photographs. Most of the photos are obviously studio pieces and catch our ancestors at what they considered their best, but a few, like the picture of the little girl missing a coat button, seem unplanned.
The photos are grouped by decade and show men, women and children of all ages and social classes. The editor's notes are conveniently placed near the photos and contain clear and interesting details about the costumes. Together the notes and the photos provide a useful resource and fun browse for all those interested in Victorian costume and manners.

"Victorian Dress in Photographs" - the title says it all.......2000-03-07
"Victorian Dress in Photographs" is an excellent summary of Victorian fashion. Unlike Gernsheim's "Victorian and Edwardian Fashion: A Photographic Survey," Ginsburg's book isn't so clearly focused on the fashion of the upper class ladies; there are also pictures of children, men, and the poor folk. Also, there is less text in this book, but the pictures speak for themselves.
Ginsburg's book is not so much about the ideals of Victorian fashion as it is about reality. It shows what ordinary people actually wore back then, not just queens and countesses. If I may suggest, this book should be accompanied by Gernsheim's "Photographic Survey" - to explore the two sides of Victorian dress: the fashionable and stylish, and the common which sometimes even amounts to looking ridiculous.

Advanced Player's Manual by Skip Williams.......2006-04-01
This book filled me with great Curiosity mixed with a bit of Trepidation... After spending the last four days perusing this tome {and believe me I'm a s...l...o...w... reader so that was no mean feat!} I submit this review for your approval:
Advanced Player's Manual
By Skip Williams
Green Ronin Publishing
Let us start with the basics: this is a hard cover tome of 224 pages, black and white illustrations, retailing for $34.95. The cover is a monochromatic treatment of a fighter standing on a mound of souls in "the Abyss" facing a demon {cover art by William C. Eaken}. The artwork inside ranges from stylized pen and ink to more simple pencil sketches. The book consists of eight chapters and two appendices.
Chapter One: Abilities:
Or rather
one new ability: Luck. This chapter offers "Luck" as an additional ability added to the standard six. I was intrigued {and, honestly, this is the reason I purchased this book} by this concept and Mr. Williams gives it a very good treatment. He offers the Luck ability as a less arbitrary way to determine how events affect the PCs. He also offers up the option of substituting the Luck modifier in other rolls. However, I found this to be more useful as a GM's tool than as a player's tool. All in all this is a good optional addition for game flavor.
Chapter Two: Races:
This chapter is broken down into three sections: "Mechanics", "Half-Races & Greater Races" and "The Planetouched Template". The Mechanics section offers a "Buy System" approach for generating racial abilities. It outlines a "Points to Buy" list for each core race and gives a cost for generating a custom character based on each race. The Half-Races & Greater Races portion describes ways to build alternate half-races {such as Half-Dwarf} using the same "Buy System", or "Greater Races" a "distilled" version of a specific race i.e. "Greater Dwarf". The Planetouched Template outlines a step by step break down to creating those who have been touched by the Planes.
Chapter Three: Character Classes:
This chapter offers six new classes to be used in addition to the
Players Hand Book as well as rules for taking these classes to Epic Levels beyond the base 20.
The Eldritch Weaver class creates a Wizard who focuses his magic on specific "Threads of Power" {outlined in Chapter Eight: Spells}; growing in specialized focuses and later gaining supernatural like abilities.
The Evangelist isn't the typical man in an overly expensive suit and bad hairdo preaching to you from the magic glowing box. No, these are the traveling preachers of "Brother {insert favorite deity here}'s Church of Devine {insert appropriate theology here}". Weather a shyster or true believer; these are the chosen who share their beliefs with a book in one hand and a divine weapon in the other. Equal parts Paladin and Bard the Evangelist will add a "Brilcream Profit" to any campaign.
The Scout, the only non magic class offered in this chapter is little more than a Roguish-Ranger who is able to specialize in a specific weapon {or weapons}, gaining extra bonuses with her chosen weapon {or weapons} as she grows.
The Spellmaster is probably the best class offered in this book. A very well thought out alternative to the standard Sorcerer class. A Spellmaster doesn't wield magic, she manipulates the ambient forced from her surroundings to cast her spells. Rather than having the limited use of a certain amount of spells a day, she can extend herself and cast spells beyond her slotted set or even cast spells from higher levels. Of course there is a cost...
The Thanemage. I
really wanted to like this class, after all it is based on a certain Gray Wizard in a trilogy about a Ring... But it fell short of my expectations. After all is said and done the Thanemage is nothing more than an arcane Paladin.
The Warpriest, we already have a Paladin {and now an Evangelist and a Thanemage}... Do we really need another variant on this same theme?
Chapter Four: Skills:
This chapter takes a good long look at the standard skill list and annotates it. Rather than adding more skills it outlines more uses for the existing ones and ways to apply them to more esoteric creatures {such as a giant centipede making a balance check}.
Chapter Five: Feats:
This chapter outlines eleven new feats ranging from very helpful: "Share Lesser Divination" to the fairly useless: "Taunt", and one pertaining to "Luck".
Chapter Six: Description:
This chapter should have been called "Alignment by the Numbers". Mr. Williams takes the nine alignments {True Neutral, Neutral Evil, Neutral Good, Lawful Neutral, Lawful Evil, Lawful Good, Chaotic Neutral, Chaotic Evil, & Chaotic Good} and treats them as a skill, assigning them a numerical value. This offers a more concrete way to ascertain a character's
true alignment and personal commitment to a specific value. In doing so we now have yet another numerical stat to take the place of a role-playing attribute. Pros and cons: this option works for the more numerically driven player and still it does assist the role player in defining certain values.
Chapter Seven: Mass Combat:
Another section I really wanted to like... But it turned out to be a set of mathematical gymnastics that can best be described as: "Average the average of the averages". In creating the "Damage Factor", Mr. Williams did produce a damage system for a unit of creatures that works very well. However, the rest of the Mass Combat System seems overburdened and lays a taxing responsibility on the GM to translate all the rules into a playable scenario that will not take an entire game session to generate. In short more simplicity is needed to make the Mass Combat system more viable.
Chapter Eight: Spells:
As the title indicates this chapter deals with Spells. To be specific it adds new spells to the existing lists and defines the spell lists for the Evangelist, and the Warpriest. The progression and "Threads" for the Eldritch Weaver is remarkably well done and gives me a greater respect for this new class.
The highlights from the spell list are: Spacious Sleeves, Dimension Hop, Moon Shadows, Quick Scribe, Force Marbles and Foozle {mostly cause I like the name}.
Appendix One: Psychic Powers:
This section illustrates a new class: the Psychic, a non-magical class with spell-like abilities. Reprinted from Green Ronin's
Psychic's Handbook by Steve Kenson; the Psychic is a well thought out class with a lot of potential for game play, and promises to be a great foil for those high magic games that rely heavily on "Detect Magic" {insert evyl laffter here "mwaaa HaHa haaaa"}.
Appendix Two: Sample Units:
Remember the "Damage Factor"? Well here we see it in illustrated black and white.

Didgeridoo made easy.......2003-11-09
I received a didgeridu from a mate of mine in Australia and she sent it along with the John Bowden CD and this book. The combination of the two made it very easy for me as a beginner to grasp the instrument. I would recommend the read to anyone interested in starting, as I did, or even a seasoned player. John's grasp of the Aborigines and their instrumentation can be further researched on his website at http://www.didgeridoo-australia.com

Product Description
Composers give a unique and powerful voice to the stories we see on the big screen. Those who work principally with one type of film may leave a unique imprint on an entire genre. James Bernard was one such composer. From 1952 to the late 1990s he was one of horrors definitive and distinctive voices, scoring many of Hammers best-known films, including Dracula. This critical biography details Bernards life from struggle to success. More than just a biography, however, it is also a meticulous examination of his music, including its intricate mechanisms and the many sources of Bernards inspiration. Movie scores examined include The Quatermass Experiment, The Curse of Frankenstein, Dracula and The Hound of the Baskervilles. Reviews of Bernards work and reminiscences of the composer himself add depth and personal feeling to the biography. A music glossary and a filmography complete the work.
Book Description
From selling 10 million records in two years, both with Tubeway Army ("Are Friends Electric?") and solo ("Cars"), to more low-key and idiosyncratic releases through subsequent decades, Gary Numan has built up an impressive body of work and retained a hugely devoted cult following. Electric Pioneer is the first-ever guide to his recorded output, documenting every single and album and featuring sections on his live shows, memorabilia, and DVD releases.
Customer Reviews:
pandora's box for the numanoid.......2006-08-09
usually these sorts of books fall flat after just a couple of pages, not Electric Pioneer. No, this is something altogether much more cohesive, so good in fact that Gary Numan sat down and wrote the foreword to the book (and if that isn't a good enough recomendation that what else is?)
Author Mr Goodwin (British i believe) has delivered the kind of book that true music fan's dream of, bootlegs, official releases, alt covers, foriegn releases, tv appearances, dvd's, videos - i mean, cmon, its gary numan for flips sake!!!!
Top stuff.
awesome numan book.......2005-10-13
i've been waiting for this book to be given a US release and i must say i'm impressed, the writer is obviously a huge fan and has captured Numan's entire music career with aplomb. For a newly converted fan like me this book is invaluable. Page after page of posters, record sleeves and more detailed info than you could possibly cope with. Hats off to the writer, no wonder its authorised. Superb
Interesting, but flawed.......2005-10-09
I like so many others, have followed Gary Numan (in the UK) from day one, and still do so even though I live overseas. Like many other Numanoids, I have also bought every release in every format possible, sustaining Numan's career, even when it was at it's most dire. It is however a great hobby, and almost an addiction at times, while listening to one of the pioneers of electronic music, and enjoying his sounds.
This book however has a good side and many, many bad sides. The Armchair guide does provide a good overall inside in the records released by Gary Numan, and does reveal little snippets that some (but extremely few) might not know. Where this book fails is the personal opinion of the writer Paul Goodwin, who should have kept it just that - personal.
Everybody has their own opinion about a song or an album - that's what's so great about being a human being - but Paul Goodwin feels that his opinion is more important than the reader.
He also feels the need to inform us about songs that were omitted from a release, which is just borderline stupid!
The writer feels that certain rare recordings should be added to a re-release, which obviously shows the simple-minded attitude some die hard Numan fans have. Obviously he didn't think of copyright, ownership of the song, or availability. Sure, we all would like to see everything Numan even touched, to be released on CD or DVD, but wake up Paul - it's not going to happen!
Like I said before, it is a good insight and introduction to his records, but the writer reduces this guide to a personal piece of wishful thinking, outdated opinion and 'I know it all' attitude, that made so many fans ridicule the hard core fans, and embarrass them.
Who should buy this book? Not sure - hard core fans know about these things already so all they'll see is a lot pretty pictures with an annoying opinion, and they will also notice many mistakes by the writer. Casual fans are not interested because it's too much of redundant info, so I guess Pauls family might be interested. You decide which describes you best.
80s synth pioneer career biog.......2005-09-07
i first saw Gary Numan on saturday Night Live back in 1980 when i was 13 years old, back then he was promoting an album called The Pleasure Principle. Sadly his profile in the states sunk as the 80s got underway and it wasn't until 1998 that he finally returned to touring in America. This book cronicles Gary's wilderness years as well as his big selling one. Personally i found this book most interesting as most of the music detailed with in i just didn't know about. Its well written throughout and touches on Gary's music, videos and live shows (as well as a ton of other sub catagories. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Lively lessons on public speaking.......2006-08-08
To deliver a memorable speech you need a combination of the right words and a great performance. Both are crucial, but performance often makes the difference between a mediocre presentation and an exceptional one. Author Tony Carlson has written a useful book on how to prepare and deliver a speech to achieve maximum impact on your audience. He covers all the details, from manuscript preparation to rehearsal techniques to post-speech follow-up. He writes in a witty, flowing style, and he includes invaluable anecdotes, useful checklists and a section on dealing with speechwriters. While "wowing" today's skeptical audiences is no easy task, Carlson's tips will help you get listeners on your side. We recommend this book to professionals who want to sharpen their speaking skills, speechwriters and anyone involved in corporate communication.
Unconventional Helper for Memorable Speeches.......2005-08-25
As a regular trade speaker, I found Tony's book to be a powerful helper in the crafting and delivery of speeches that will create lasting impressions. Breaking the boundaries of PowerPoint-constrained presentations, The How of Wow will help apprentice speakers as well as seasoned orators to better connect with their audience. People crave for stories they can relate to, and Tony's experience will help most speakers deliver them in the most engaging ways.
Light, valuable reading for corporate speechmakers.......2005-07-23
As an active professional speaker, I have far too many opportunities to witness well-meaning corporate executives damage their reputations by delivering speeches that are lame and embarrassing, using presentation styles that are as inappropriate as their talking about the topic to begin with. As I shake my head in wonder, I contemplate whether any of these people ever read a book on what speech-making is all about.
If they were to search for such a book, The How of Wow would certainly meet their needs. The author has written speeches, delivered speeches, critiqued speeches, and enjoyed the journey of coaching executives how to present their ideas-and their ideals-in public.
This book is not quite what you might expect it to be. It is not a rah-rah volume, nor it is a step-by-step handbook for writing and delivering a speech. Rather, Carlson's book is a lighthearted look at one of the biggest fears harbored by men and women in today's business world.
In an unusual approach for a book on this topic, Carlson begins by asking why the reader should even care about giving a blow `em away speech. Then, part two challenges whether you should even accept the invitation. Not all opportunities are right, so be careful. In the third section of the book, Carlson digs into how to think about what you will say...and why. Preparation gives you strength, as in part four you settle into the writing phase. Craft the story, make the connection, Carlson advises repeatedly. Then, to demonstrate, he does exactly that in these pages. You'll learn more about hooks to connect with your audience than you ever thought existed.
The writing section explores ways to build simplicity-much more effective in speechmaking than complexity. You'll learn about language, quotations, and words and phrases that detract from, rather than contribute to, the positive influence of the speech.
The last section of the book takes us into the actual presentation, with a follow-up emphasis on going beyond merely the basic strength of the speech itself. The supplemental questions at the end of the chapters is exceeded only by appendices that take you deeper into the knowledge base of speech-writing.
Well-directed toward executives; value for professional speakers, as well.
