When the National Socialists came to power in Germany in the early 1930s, one of their most vigorous campaigns was against modernist and avant-garde art. Some 650 works by such renowned artists as Max Beckmann, Marc Chagall, Otto Dix, Wassily Kandinsky, and Paul Klee were removed from German museums and assembled in a traveling exhibition that the Nazis called "Degenerate Art." Fifty years later, the L.A. County Museum of Art reconstructed the notorious exhibition. This catalogue not only recreates the original show, but contains exhaustively researched essays on such topics as the Nazi ideals of beauty and resistance efforts by some German museums. Biographical information is available for each persecuted artist as well as rare photographs, and there is a room by room survey of and guide to the 1939 exhibition with a new English translation. Artistic expression is still under attack by such groups as the NEA, making this book strikingly relevant today.
Customer Reviews:
It's not just the pictures.......2000-12-25
If the Barron/Guenther book were only about the pictures, it would still rate five stars. It has to catalog "degenerate art" (a weak translation of "entartete Kunst", but the one that has become standard) better than most of its competitors.
But Barron and Guenther were not content to stop with a catalog. Even without the pictures, this book would rate five stars. Guenther for one writes about having viewed this exhibit as a 17-year-old, giving true historical context for the gallery.
From an essay on music (which tackles the sticky wicket of Wilhelm Furtwaengler) to an explanation of the structure of the Nazi art and culture hierarchy, "Degenerate Art" provides literate and precise insight to the cultural philosophy of the Third Reich. It remains as objective as you can be about that era, refusing to stoop to shouting "rabid Nazi idiots" -- Barron and Guenther allow their readers to come to that conclusion all on their own.
The unsolved riddle, however, is one we have yet to resolve for ourselves. Witness Rudy G., and the dung-laden Virgin. How can art and government live side by side? One is empty without the other, but how do we define fine lines?
Barron and Guenther's book does not answer that question, but it certainly gives both sides of the debate a ton of ammunition.
if you can't think of what to paint, we'll tell you.......2000-03-25
by now it's presumably common knowledge that the nazi's had very firm ideas on art. Other than pictures of heroic nazis, grandiose mountain views and happy peasants, all modern art was considered degenerate, especially if it was painted by a jew. It's not enough just to know this, however, one wants to see what the fuss was all about. This book brings the reader reproductions of the censured works in question and provides excellent essays that discuss the painters, their work and what happened to them under the nazis. This is a work which is essentially an excellent idea. It's a fascinating period for anyone interested in the role of the state in the production of art. What is perhaps even more fascinating is that the "modern" art which was the main target of the nazis, is so often the subject, to this day, of layperson's attacks on art. Think of the classic cliche remark, "oh, my three year old could have done that". This link raises many questions about the link between the fascist outlook and many commonly held views. We are appalled by the nazis and yet their views on art are not neccessarily radical in comparison to many commonly held views. What does that mean about our political leanings? what does that have to say about democracy? Can people truly handle freedom? Or at heart do they want somebody just to step in and take care of things for them? Why is it that people find it so hard to deal with the strange, disturbing and indeed, occasionally absurd images that artists come up with when they are truly are free to express their visions? I have nothing bad to say about this book on any technical level. The essays are uniformly brilliant and useful and the art speaks for itself. the book serves not only as an excellent resource for all those interested in art history, but as a beautiful and necessary tribute to the memory of so many persecuted artists. It reminds us of the importance of artistic freedom, particularly when the results are not to our liking, or are unsettling, or disturbing. It also happens to serve as a useful primer and introduction to a lot of the great art of that time period. I salute the authors and highly recommend this book.

Book Description
The 1939 Herald Exhibition, which brought the Australian public face-to-face for the first time with the experimental art that had been developing in Europe during the early the 20th century, is described in this fascinating history. This account examines the astonishing collection of paintings, including nine Picassos and eight Van Goghs, that generated much controversy upon its opening and was described by the director of the National Gallery of Victoria as "the work of degenerates and perverts."

Book Description
While African American dress has long been noted as having a distinctive edge, many people may not know that debutante balls - a relatively recent phenomenon within African American communities - feature young women and men dressed, respectively, in conventional symbols of female purity and male hegemony, and conforming to gender stereotypes that have tended to characterize such events traditionally. Within the Hmong American community, mothers and aunts of teenagers use bangles, lace and traditional handwork techniques to create dazzling displays reflecting the gender and ethnicity of their sons and daughters, nieces and nephews, as they participate in an annual courtship ritual. This book examines these events to show how dress is used to transform gender construction and create positive images of African American and Hmong American youth. Coming-of-age rituals serve as arenas of cultural revision and change. For each of these communities, the choice of dress represents cultural affirmation. This author shows that within the homogenizing context of American society, dress serves as a site for the continual renegotiation of identity - gendered, ethnic and otherwise.

I bet you can think of your own cell phone story that would fit in any one of these categories.
For example, my friend Betsy answered to her phone to hear: "This is Red and White Cab. We found a phone in one of our cabs that had your phone number in it under MOM. Do you know who it belongs to?" Betsy's son, like so many people, have only a cell phone, no landline, and if they lose their phone, you can't even call them to say you found it--so those who did a little investigation usually call HOME or MOM and track down the owner. When Betsy went to pick up the phone, the woman's drawer was full of unclaimed phones. Now all Betsy had to do was find a way to tell her son she had his phone.
Armchair Interviews says: Reiser's collected stories are the good, the bad and the ugly about cell phones. We love ours, but hate the person who has rude manners, talks loudly in public (as if we care about his conversation) and generally annoy us. Great little gift book for those who think they must have a cell phone to their ear--or they are missing something!
Cell Phones, Cell Phones, Cell Phones Everywhere.......2005-10-14
Today it's hard to imagine life without a cell phone. Sometimes it seems like they've taken over our lives. I can barely remember a time when I wasn't at the beck and call of everyone who had my number. I talk on the phone a lot, have a blue tooth ear connection to my phone. I can only imagine what I look like as I'm jogging and talking while I do my workout every morning. I must appear a crazy person to those watching. On not, depending on how old you are, I suppose. If you're older and haven't made the transition, I'd probably look a bit demented, but If you're under forty, you'd probably understand.
And Judy Reiser definitely understands the impact the cell phone has had on society. In this cute as a button little books that resembles the cell phone that it's about, she tells us several, one page, quick stories about a human and his/her cell phone. From the story of the man who left his phone behind on that fateful September day, only to receive his messages when he got a new phone, to the man who reported a car driving erratically to the 911 operator. She told him to stay on the line and follow the car. He did, they tried to lose him, but he stayed them till the cops finally caught up to them.
"How do you change a flat." Get out your cell phone, one lady says.
A man sends a picture to another man impolitely using his phone in a restaurant, via bluetooth.
A lady in a store recommend a plumber to her friend in need. A passerby overhears and asks the plumber's name.
And you better watch who you put in your speed dial, especially if it's an old boyfriend.
And there is a lot more in this humorous little book that is just a whole gang of fun to have around. If you want a quick laugh on occasion, or a quick look into the silent revolution that has taken over America, then this book is for you.

Book Description
Once crowned "The Pope of Trash" by William Burroughs-and now hailed as the genius behind the smash-hit Broadway musical Hairspray-John Waters (b. 1946) is not only a controversial director, but also a powerful, perceptive visual artist. This book, published on the occasion of his first major museum exhibition, surveys his still photographic works made over the past decade, and also features stills from his seldom-seen no-budget films and objects from Waters's personal collection that reflect his fascination with photographic imagery, the mass media, and outrageous expressions of American popular culture.
Waters's newer photographic work echoes themes that are central to all his work: race, sex, class, family, politics, celebrity, religion, the media, the allure of crime, glamour, and the skewering of cultural symbols and stereotypes. Waters's longevity as a cultural figure reflects his unique ability to tap into our most private attractions to the erotic, perverse, and sleazy, blatantly unleashing thoughts that polite society tries diligently to repress. As he moves from margin to mainstream, Waters's work in films, photography, and performance continues to resonate.
Customer Reviews:
a great book for John Waters' fans.......2005-01-04
I agree 100% with the previous reviewer's statement that this book is "more like a promotional souvenir than an art book"... but I really can't say something bad about the work the people who put this together did, as I think this is an outstanding effort to show what John Waters is all about, not only as an artist but as the public character he has created for himself. As a fan of the man's work, all forms of it (film, writing and art -I know film and writing ARE art, but you know what I mean), this was a dream come true: getting to see actual images of everything I've been reading about for years -his toy hook, Lady Zorro, books and magazines from his collection and other stuff.
This is probably not the best book devoted to an individual artist, but one of the best tributes I've seen devoted to a cult figure. And once you think about it, Waters' art can only be fully appreciated placing it within the cultural landscape the book provides. Bottom line is, this a beautiful book about a really neat guy. If you like him, don't think twice: you'll love this book. If you only care about him as an artist, get this AND Director's Cut.
This book's layout design? A dirty shame..........2004-09-08
I'm a big fan of Waters' ongoing adventures in the highfalutin art world, so of course I went to his great spring 2004 show at the New Museum in NYC, which this book documents. I'm disappointed to say that it really doesn't do the show much justice and, in fact, is more like a promotional souvenir than an art book. Knowing how Waters abhors pretension, this is probably on purpose, but I can't say the book's designers have done his work any favors. The biggest problem is one of scale: an effort to show individual works in their entirety on the page means everything is reproduced way too small and the taken-off-the-TV effect is all but lost. And one work, "Slade 16", is cut off mid-image and continued on the next page, which I thought especially unexcusable--even Warhol wouldn't put up with that. The book's design has little of the the elegance or wit of Waters' earlier "Director's Cut". Everything about that book was intriguing, including how it smelled; the paper was so heavily varnished that it took on an amusing "Odorama" quality of its own. And the reproductions were impeccable. "Change of Life" is packed with "bonus" material, including one startling image: a b&w pic of a villianous Cyril Richard in full makeup as Captain Hook that, as far as I'm concerned, sums up Waters' entire oeuvre (crime IS beauty--check out that pre-Divine eye makeup!). But the book really is kind of a shambles. The exhibit in part was sponsored by Fine Line Features and, whenever I look for the book at Borders, it's in the Film stacks, not Art or Photography, which I guess tells the whole story. Whatever the case, Waters is the real deal and I now enjoy his photography even more than his movies. Interesting side note: in "Director's Cut", Waters' pledged that he would never let the world see "Eat Your Makeup", one of his earliest movies. The exhibit and this book heavily feature it. I wonder what changed. Change of life?

Spawned by a 10-year study of 2,000 firms conducted at Bain & Company, a global consultancy specializing in business strategy, Profit from the Core is based on the fundamental but oft-ignored maxim that prolonged corporate growth is most profitably achieved by concentrating on a single core business. To help companies identify this true essence, narrow their focus accordingly, and move forward in a manner that builds upon existing structure, Bain director Chris Zook and former Bain director James Allen present "a set of practical and proven principles, diagnostic tests, and questions for management teams to use as tools for reexamining or revising their strategies in search of the next wave of profitable growth." Bolstering their argument with real-world examples--including companies such as Disney, which succeeded by taking this approach, and Bausch & Lomb, which faltered by eschewing it--the authors show how to effectively uncover true corporate strengths, elevate them to realize their potential, identify related new businesses that could be successfully added, and even completely redefine a core when confronted with factors forcing such action. (For example: they offer a step-by-step method for mapping "adjacent opportunities" that may prove complementary, ranking them according to potential, and developing strategies to further evaluate and ultimately implement them.) The result is recommended for anyone tired of the management theory du jour who seeks a proven way to propel their company into the future. --Howard Rothman

Profit from the Core argues that a timeless strategic principle--building market power in a well-defined core business--remains the key source of competitive advantage and the most viable platform for successful expansion. Based on a ten-year study of 2,000 companies conducted by Bain & Company, the book identifies three factors that differentiate growth strategies that succeed from those that fail: 1) reaching full potential in the core business; 2) expanding into businesses adjacent to that core; and 3) preemptively redefining the core business in times of market turbulence. Explaining how leaders can adapt their strategies in response to a rapidly changing business environment, the book concludes with guidelines for becoming sustained value creators--companies capable of successfully refining and redefining their core businesses over the long haul.
Customer Reviews:
Define your core business clearly.......2006-02-21
The authors of this book see 3 essential elements separating a good growth strategy, one that is successful from a poor growth strategy, one that fails:
· The company must reach its full potential in its core business or businesses.
· Once a company has reached its potential in its core business, it must then expand to the logical businesses that surround the core business.
· A company must preemptively redefine its core business in response to the first signs of changes in the marketplace.
The foundation of sustained growth, according to these authors, rests in establishing a strong foundation: a clear definition of the company's core business. The authors present a series of ten questions designed to aid businesses in defining their core business clearly.
There are pitfalls along the way, and the authors present several growth pitfalls to avoid:
· Expanding toward an entrenched position, where the company has relatively low odds of achieving leadership
· Overestimating the profit pool.
· "False Bundling"- trying to be all things to all customers.
· Invaders from unexpected fronts.
In order to deal with market changes, the authors offer five key changes that are most threatening to a company's growth:
· Erosion of low-end product segments.
· Erosion of customer segments.
· Erosion of micro-segments.
· Erosion of traditional business boundaries.
· New intermediaries and new control points.
Skip this one and read the sequel instead.......2005-03-28
This is not a terrible book- it has some interesting case studies which the authors use to prove their points. However, there is not a great deal in here that is new if you've read the sequel to this book first ("Beyond the Core", Zook), and have read other
There are some good points about this book. I like the parts about defining the business boundaries, mapping adjacencies, reacting to competitor threats, etc. However, I feel that I got a lot more out of the sequel than from this book. Perhaps I would have rated it higher if I read it first, or if I hadn't already read so many books on this theme. Surely Zook and Allen should not pay the price for this, so I have factored this in to my score.
Additionally, I suppose I can't blame them for writing highly of Enron and even using them as an example of successful "redefinition of the core"- everyone was fooled, although you think that the top consulting firm in Boston would have become suspicious, considering the great fall it sustained shortly afterward. Perhaps the sequel served in part to correct this mistake.
This book was premature; it would have been best to combine this with the sequel into one book. If you skip this and read only the latter, you won't be missing much.
Very Realistic and very useful.......2003-12-11
This book is very good, it explains very clearly the different growth concepts with clear definitions, and a very interesting growth matrix. in addition, unlike other books, this book uses a lot of real world examples to illustarte the different concepts and growth startegies. It explains how companies, that succeded, evolved from their core business and developed new products without getting lost in the process. Also, explains why and how some companies failed. The book is realistic, and gives you some tools and matrix that you can apply when analyzing and developing a growth strategy. You should also check out the web site, it has some examples of how to apply the gowth matrix.
Dell has applied this book idea very well.......2003-11-10
This is a very good book for anyone interest in business strategy. Especially reading it with Creative Destruction. One company which has applied this strategy very well is Dell. Its strategy to stay at the core in PC while adjaceny expansion into Printer, PDA ... etc. It stated in Businessweek that it is entering into the low-end (maybe ignorant by market leader) market for market share first. It is similar to a point mentioned in the book. I guess it has a lot to do with Rollin (one of the head of Dell)
Very good.......2002-01-14
Maybe not revolutionary, but definitely making a very clear point that is all too often forgotten by even the biggest companies.
Very useful for those making business plans or those reviewing business strategy. It can definitely help determine how to go build a business and what to focus on to make a business successful.
I found this book truly worth its 5 star rating.
