Book Description

With over 500,000 copies sold in this popular series, the Designer's Guide to Color collection now boasts a fifth title. Using an abundance of color combinations and shapes, Designer's Guide to Color 5 contains extensive descriptions for creating colors that convey emotions or impressions, and acts as a guide for making up new ones. Each color combination includes a description of the density of colors, showing tint percentages for printing. Ranging from earthy color combinations that give the impression of autumn, and cool, metallic combinations that suggest modern, to deep, vivid tones that convey elegance, this volume is an indispensable reference for designers, as well as for those working with advertising, packaging, fashion, interior design, fabric design, or illustration -- literally anyone making a color choice.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Where'd my special K go?.......2003-05-26

One of the things I hate and find irritating about this book is its complete lack of utilizing the color black. In fact, of all the hundreds of color combinations contained in this little book, the color black (K) is completely missing. And that, contrary to what some people might think, is an extremely important color in CMYK printing. It also lists all color combos in YMC order, which I've never seen before in any color book. It gets very confusing when trying to input the values into any program, as they are all set up to take CMYK in that order. But you don't have to worry about getting the K value--the authors just left it out. Quite unforgivable. I also found the color combos shown here to be extremely UN-complementary. I've had more than one client tell me, after showing them a couple of designs using these color combos, that the schema looked "awful" or just plain "ugly." I did too, but since my confidence in color coordination is not that high, I needed second opinions. Which I got. So I put it on the back shelf and let it gain 10%K dust in the 100%K recesses where I hope to never find or use it again. There are just too many books out there that are simply better.

3 out of 5 stars A good guide of color combinations.......2001-07-23

Very good, if not thorough, color reference, with very good color combinations (color charts are included as well). Perhaps a bigger variety of "moods" or "styles" (as the combinations are classified) could have made this book more of a definitive reference.

The prose that accompanies each chapter and tries to bring some rationality to the choices of colors and explain the creation of new combinations is somewhat shallow, and I found it quite confusing for the use of terms left unexplained, and a somewhat clunky translation from the Japanese.

3 out of 5 stars Colors matched.......2000-05-13

This is a very useful designers reference book. I wish that they've listed the colors in the order of C-M-Y-K instead of Y-M-C-K, it gets confusing when I want to plug in the numbers to my color palette. Timeless color combinations. Very useful even in the year 2000, even though it has been almost ten years since it got published. Pantone combinations would be helpful for next publications (if they haven't done it yet) Thanks for your guidance when I get stuck with no creative color ideas.

    Book Description

Austin Powers mercilessly parodied the look, but the films' enormous success proved the enduring influence of mid-60s London fashion.

In April 1966, Time famously touted London as the new world center of style. Forty years later, this book reconsiders the roles played by designers like Mary Quant, celebrities like Twiggy, boutiques like Biba, photographers like David Bailey, magazines, and filmmakers in promoting a new, more relaxed, more colorful way of dressing that reverberated around the world. Illustrated with key pieces from the V&A's fashion collection plus contemporary photos, posters, and ephemera, the book relates fashion to the rapidly changing social, economic, and aesthetic context of the times, arguing for the central role it played not just on Carnaby Street, but in 60's pop culture.

Imagine three hurricanes converging on one household and you get an idea of what Darryl and Wanda MacPherson experience each delightful day of parenting Zoe, Hammie, and Baby Wren. It's a perfect storm of flying foodstuffs, off-the-scale emotional outbursts, and enough offspring energy to make veteran storm chasers duck for cover ¿ and that's before any little friends come over to play!

Playdate: Category 5 captures all this and more in the latest Baby Blues collection. Rick Kirkman and Jerry Scott are right on target in episode after episode. Their witty observations and insights-such as "I think screaming is the primary form of communication for girls"; "We've gotta learn to travel lighter, or just put some wheels on the house"; and "Sometimes being the dad is like being the weird kid in the neighborhood"-always hit the mark.

And this books made me LAUGH. How WONDERFUL to know I'm not alone in the moments that I want to cry, this "full-time" mothering stuff is so hard, but instead I choose to laugh, not in a small part due to Baby Blues. I don't know if their books mirror my life, or my life mirrors their comedic endeavors, but I'm not complaining. If you're a parent, you will like this book. It'll either bring back memories, or show you what's to come, depending on the age(s) of your bundle(s) of joy. ENJOY!

                      5 out of 5 stars A Don't Miss.......2001-11-29

As I grew up watching Dick Enberg on television, I always wondered how he could write, or reflect, on what was happening before his eyes so well? Clearly, this book helped me answer that question. Mr. Enberg has written a book of quotes unlike any other. He has included in his book, not only those famous quotes with which we are all so familiar, but also quotes that he heard in his every day life. It is this aspect of the book that I found so rewarding, and it is this aspect that helps separate it from similar themed texts. It showed me that one doesn't always have to look for the comedian, world leader, or athlete for guidance. Instead, one can simply listen to the common man (or woman) for answers, advice, and humor. Mr. Enberg realizes that fame doesn't guarantee these attributes, but more importantly, that a lack of fame doesn't prevent one from obtaining any or all of them. This is a fantastic book, put together by a man who can see great qualities in people from all walks of life.

3 out of 5 stars Good for a few laughs.......2001-11-19

Its a nice book but if you are seriously looking for quotes to use in daily life or speeches (with references ect.) buy the Oxford dictionary of quotations. It's a much better investment.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have resource.......2001-03-13

This book is sooooo funny. I keep it in the bathroom next to my Bible. I read a quote a day to put a smile on my face. I am fund raising to the San Diego Blood Bank and The San Diego Zoo.It really helps to be happy, when you asking someone for Money. One of my favorite Quotes is " A word of Advice, Don't give it" It makes me laugh.

                      3 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Joke Book.......2001-02-21

The easiest way to become a famous speaker is to become famous and then start speaking for money. People don't care how well they speak and laugh at any joke by a famous person. It can even be a very old stolen joke. When they write speech books or joke books you have to wonder what to take seriously. Enberg recommends starting a talk immediately with self- deprecation. Better advise is in their one liner on page 42. "Don't be humble. You are not that great."-- Golda Meir

What makes this better than many other joke books for speakers, is that each category is started out by a few pages on how you might use subsequent type of humor. The theme getting the reader to understand that it is better to use your own humorous experiences. If you are not yet creative in humor, don't just steal somebody else's one-liner innovate a new twist to it or help it stimulate your own creation. I recommend that you learn how to start from scratch with your own stories. Check out my review of Using Stories and Humor by Joanna Slan. Enberg's reference book might help get the juices but it can't replace it. Buy them both-its not high finance dollars... I started reading on public speaking in September 2000. I rushed to buy three joke books. I discovered quickly that reading humor manuals and joke books is not very useful. So I skipped them and started reading on public speaking ( currently over two dozen books). Now Christmas is over and I have two more as gifts. Now I have five joke books to read. They are boring. Its like the left over turkey. You think it is fun to eat leftovers. Then you remember why you do not eat turkey the rest of the year. I am now reading these humor books on the theory that they will help me create humor or at least innovate from their starting point.

5 out of 5 stars An Encyclopedia of Great One Liners for Everyone.......2000-12-22

A great book for everyone, not just for speaking in public. Since purchasing the book, I've used quite a few lines at parties, and got a lot of laughs, especially the one liners about politics. Since I live in Florida, this chapter gave me a lot of material, along with the insults which are quite useful. Enberg and the Morgans have compiled a great reference book that is hilarious. I totally agree with some of the other reviews about this book. The way Bernard Jay talks about Divine in his book is just plain rude. OK - We know that you didn't like Divine, Mr. Jay - but is it essential for you to make personal attacks about Divine's size and bodily functions? I don't think anyone deserves to be spoken of like that - celebrity or otherwise. No one is perfect, and I'm sure Divine wasn't either. However, if you wanted to write a book about him, you could have eliminated the sophomoric attempts to belittle him. If you obtain any degree of celebrity yourself, Mr. Jay, other than dedicating your career to someone you didn't like, maybe someone will write a book about how often YOU farted. Fair?

I have just finished reading this wonderful book and I felt compelled to share my thoughts. I could barely put it down for the last week. It was written with such emotion and feeling that when i got to the last chapter I was brought to tears by the sad and heartfelt ending the book was simply divine! x

2 out of 5 stars An Attempt To Cash In On Divine's Name.......2004-01-09

Bernard Jay states in the introduction of this book that he is not bitter. I have never read a more bitter account in my life! In my opinion he didn't make enough money from Divine while Divine was alive, so this is an attempt to squeeze more money from Divine's name.
The author constantly makes catty remarks in reference to Divine's size. I realize Divine was large and that can't go unmentioned. However, is it necessary to say, "soon after discovering his huge bulk" (upon finding Divine dead in his bed). I find the descriptions unnecessary.
The constant insults make the book less interesting. As if the author is out for revenge or something.
It is an entertaining read, simply because Divine led such a twisted life as an internationally known drag queen. However this book won't win over any new fans, and may disgust the old fans.

4 out of 5 stars "I'm less trashy than I used to be.".......2003-04-13

After reading Francis Milstead's delightful biography, "My Son, Divine," my attention was drawn to the biography "Simply Divine," written by Divine's personal manager, Bernard Jay. I read many reviews of Jay's book, and Francis Milstead also referred to the book with a hint of negativity. As a Divine fan, I wanted to read the book and gain my own opinion.

Bernard Jay became Divine's (Glenn Milstead) manager in 1977 until Divine's sudden death in 1988. "Simply Divine" provides Divine fans with details of Divine's film roles, recording career, and disco engagements, and Mr Jay, in his introduction writes that this is a "warts and all" portrayal of the star. Jay explains that he is aware Divine is often shown to be a "selfish and insensitive person," and he contends the book is a honest portrayal of the Divine he knew. The book includes scanty details of Divine's life prior to Bernard Jay (reasonably enough), and for the details of Divine's childhood and teen years, fans must read "My Son, Divine," written by Glenn's mum.

Bernard Jay had a somewhat turbulent relationship with Divine. Obviously, Mr Jay believed, ultimately, in Divine's potential for stardom--after all--he committed to Divine's career--but managing Divine was not an easy job. Jay and Divine agreed that their mutual goal was to alter the perception that Glenn was simply a drag queen, and establish Glenn as a character actor--whose most successful character was Divine. Jay's task was fraught with problems--for starters, Divine didn't earn enough money to warrant the entourage who accompanied him on tour. It was even questionable that Divine's income warranted a personal manager (whose only client was Divine). Bernard Jay's attitude to his subject is problematic--at times he is extremely complimentary--extolling Divine's work ethic, charisma, and talent, but at other times, Jay sneaks in a snide comment--and one example is Jay's description of Glenn eating "feverishly."

Divine is no longer here to defend himself, but this is one case in which being maligned in print after death, backfires, and the negative comments about Divine reflect badly on the author. I can't imagine that anyone other than a Divine fan would buy this book, and so Jay created an interesting dilemma in writing a book that includes several rather negative comments about Divine--that will, it is hoped, sell to Divine fans. I have no difficulty accepting that Divine was a flawed human being, but the glimpses of revulsion Jay shows for his subject are quite gratuitous--hence the four star rating.

However, on the plus side, the book, "Simply Divine," filled in many of the gaps and detailed Divine's career. As a result, at the end of the book, I was not shocked by Divine's flaws--in fact I had even more respect for this hard-working actor who kept going in spite of the fact that he suffered many set-backs in his career(including never receiving adequate compensation from several record labels).

I think a Divine fan can read "My Son, Divine," and have a fairly good idea about Divine--his career and the flawed human being that he was, but "Simply Divine" is an essential supplementary book--especially if you want specific details about Divine's career. BUT, the reader should be aware that there are several very unpleasant and negative comments made by Mr Jay (and I'm not talking about the fact that Divine was a compulsive spender)--the comments that I found a bit much were cruel and gratuitous. But consider the source--Bernard Jay's star slipped away just as he was about to prove that Jay's faith was warranted. Jay was left the rather thankless job of mopping up the financial mess left after Divine's death, organizing an auction of Divine's belongings, and paying off the IRS.

This is a well-written book, and I enjoyed it--although I do wish that Mr Jay had been a little more forgiving with some of his nastier comments, and although there really weren't that many nasty comments (and once unleashed, they seemed to arrive on a page in waves), this would have been a better book without the nastiness, and I'd hazard a guess that the book would have enjoyed more success--displacedhuman

2 out of 5 stars Caustic and Degrading.......2002-04-08

I have to say that I can understand Mr. Jay's bitterness. I would probably be a little resentful too, if I had been forced to put up with Divi's excessive spending, laziness, overindulgence, and occassional bratty behavior on a day-to-day basis for eleven years. I have no doubt that Divine was a kind and sweet person much of the time, but after all, nobody is perfect, and I'm sure that at least some of the things Mr. Jay writes about really happened.

What surprises me is the author's mercilessness toward his subject. Since Divine was supposedly such a close friend, and since the book was published only four years after his death, I would have expected at least some degree of sympathy and respect for his life and work. Instead, his story is told in an overwrought, sensationalized style that seems very unlike the personal memoir it purports itself to be. The author goes out of his way to emphasize his subject's errors and weaknesses, making Divine seem every inch the talentless hack that Roger Ebert and his ilk would have you believe.

One more thing that nobody else has mentioned thus far - if you are considering buying this because you are a fan of John Waters, don't bother. The author obviously dislikes Waters and his films intensely, and often uses selective quotes from film reviews to make it sound as though Divine's presence as an actor is the only saving grace of said films. He also suggests that Waters viewed Divine only as a marketing tool, and that their personal relationship was entirely fabricated for the benefit of the media.

Anyone looking for the basic chord progressions, lyrics or guitar fret charts for "The Dance," Fleetwood Mac's multimillion-selling live reunion album, will be satisfied with this songbook.

But guitar, keyboard & full-score transcriptions of entire albums are growing rapidly in popularity, & fans & musicians who search high & low for accurate transcriptions of Mac material still have precious little from which to choose. Various popular guitar magazines still print the occasional guitar transcription.

Best of all, an English publishing company released a folio of full-score transcriptions from the entire "Rumours" album, called "Rumours: Off the Record," in 1993. This folio is worth hunting down. It contains (in amazingly but not perfectly accurate transcriptions in clef notation) all instrumental & vocal parts on the 1977 legendary album. I wish we had more commercially available songbooks like this. Why doesn't Warner Bros. (the band's publisher) release transcribed scores for such classic albums as "Fleetwood Mac" (1975), "Tusk" (1979), & "Mirage" (1982)?

The puzzles of Gardiner (and others) took the edge off the pain of loneliness that is the inevitable result of being an extremely literate but physically uncoordinated kid. As I began to integrate with the "normal" kids, I discovered that my love for these puzzles was not unique; what was different about me was merely the respective age at which we became able to appreciate them (read: "to actually solve a few of them").

Here is my puzzle for you: This book is (at this writing) available as a PDF download from the publisher. And it's free! You should be able to find it without much difficulty (if the offer is still good when you read this). The only clue I will give you is "the numeral one followed by a hundred zeros, misspelled."

A interesting book: I appreciated above all the classification of puzzles of J.Dagelty & E.Hordern. I should like better that more contributions would have had a bibliography like the Diophantine Recreations of David Singmaster.

5 out of 5 stars A collection of papers that honor the work of Martin Gardner.......2002-10-12

The late Paul Erdos was widely known as a disseminator of mathematics, and yet his impact on the progress of mathematics may not match that of Martin Gardner. For twenty-five years, he wrote a regular column on "Mathematical Games" for Scientific American and other articles have appeared in many other venues since his "retirement" from SA in 1982. Personally, it is a very rare occasion when I encounter an American mathematician who was not strongly influenced by reading something by Gardner. Many, like myself, read it religiously, considering it the high point of each issue. It is hard to underestimate the number of people who were steered towards a career in mathematics by Gardner or had their interest increased by reading one or more of his papers.
In 1993, the first gathering for Gardner (G4G1) was held in Atlanta, where he was honored for all of his work in making mathematics interesting and entertaining. As befits a gathering of this type, many people wrote papers in the areas of magic, puzzles and mathematics to be presented at the conference. Those papers, plus a few that didn't make it into the official list, have been gathered together to make this book.
The papers are split into three categories: Personal Magic, Puzzlers and Mathemagics. While none were authored by the master, they all clearly bear his stylistic signature. The presentation is clear, entertaining and all reach the point quickly and effectively. I was so intrigued by them that it was the only thing that I read once I obtained a copy, to the detriment of the quality of a lecture on the programming language Java.
This is the highest tribute that any professional writer can achieve, when others are motivated to write material similar to yours to be collected and presented at a conference in your honor. Gardner deserves that and more and every paper in this collection is comparable to his work in quality.

I had run across my first pre-forclosure deal and needed to get a basic understanding of the steps and processes. Peter and David's book provided that wonderfully. I was able to use the steps and scripts to sign up a deal, provide help to a stressed-out seller and reach the proper department at the lender. The suggestions of how to talk to both the seller and the lender have been very helpful with dealing with the human side of things. I felt very comfortable with the style and the seller has been very appreciative. I didn't feel manipulative at all.

An official Library Weekly book review.

                        REVIEW:
This book generically highlights a few ideas on how to invest in
foreclosures and how to finance it without using cash or credit.
Part of the formula is the use of "double closings" which allows
you to simply invest with a minimal amount and use the sell price
as the payment during the title closing. The difficult aspect of
this is it doesn't truly describe certain foreclosure techniques
available in each state (generically applied). Additionally,
you may need to read this with a grain of salt with the current
                        real estate market conditions.

                        OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS ON FORECLOSURES:
                        1. The Beginner's Guide to Real Estate Tax Lien and Tax Deed Auctions [ISBN 0978834607]

                        EXCERPT:
"There's never a better time to invest in real estate."

                        RATING:
                        3 of 5

1 out of 5 stars Another Finkel disaster.......2006-06-28

How to get the most money for your property. This topic, worthy of a book, gets a couple of pages which are platitudes. This is the second book of his I've read recently in which he talks about determining the market price. The approach he advocates will result in a variance with the market of 40%, if not more. And, he lumps apartment buildings in with houses as if they were valued the same way. Of course, they are not.

On the plus side, in this book he recognizes that people do tend to get legal advice before signing a contract. He tells you how to diffuse the lawyer's criticism before it happens.

During my years as an apartment broker, I dealt with more than a few lawyers, including clients. Maybe his approach will work, but I'd think not.

This is another feel-good, cheerleading book. Rich Dad, Poor Dad does a better job of cheerleading, but has even less substance than this lightweight work.

Once again, the author has silly sales techniques that don't work. Once again, let me point you to the best writer in sales: Neil Rackham.

Spare yourself time, money and effort. Pass on everything David Finkel writes or promotes (as I shall hereafter).

2 out of 5 stars Wish they would hire a prof'l editor for all their books........2006-03-27

I own and/or have read their other books and regretfully have to say that their books aren't professionally edited. Their works seem to project an "aw shucks" tone but I find them to contain too much hyperbole.

I don't bother with their new books anymore since the writing is tiresome and predictable. They may have new information to share but that fact is lost because of the book's poor editorial presentation.

Great book! It is very well structured to guide anyone looking into investing in real estate. I've read so many books that tell you why you should invest and give you a lot of fuss just to motivate and inspire you but this book actually goes into how to get started and structure deals. It is exactly what I was looking for. I'm about half way into the book and I love it. I'm middle class and only 20 and I am now very confident into kick starting my real estate career. I wish you all the best!

After reading the second book of the series, about advanced strategies and getting alot of good tips, I decided to go back and read this book. Before buying, I was aware of alot of the negative feedback by people who had higher expectations from the author or did not like his couching of advice in fictious character role playing, but after kicking the tires in this industry for a couple of years, I have learned that you are not going to find one source that says it all and boils down everything you need to do and know. As others have said Real Estate Investing is not difficult but it is involved and is a continual learning process.

Even Richard Kiyosaki's series of books make you read through chapters and chapters of earlier year reflections and stories to whet your appetite before getting to ROI calculations and other meat. So I think David and Richard's approach is not without merit. The book explains the procedure in plain English. I think it is not a one stop solution but rather complements other Real Estate Investing sources.

2 out of 5 stars Inspiring, misleading, confusing, big sales pitch!.......2007-02-22

I'm not quite sure what to think after reading this book, and then visiting John T. Reed's web site and reading his comments about some of the techniques this book is recommending.

I was getting excited by this book, until I started to think about it a little. How are they making this money? By dialing the phone off the hook, making hundreds and thousands of calls, until they find someone naive enough to be taken advantage of! (or at least, that's what it seems to me, in my personal opinion). The authors insist that they are advising people to negotiate win-win deals, and I think that's laudable. However, it doesn't seem as if some of the examples they cite, and get so excited about, exemplify the win-win deal, or any principle of "fair exchange".

Mr. Reed doesn't review this book in particular, but I would strongly recommend you search-engine your way over to his website for a taste of his contrarian opinions on these "real estate riches" gurus in general. While I believe he may be a little strident in some opinions, he makes some excellent points. Reading his website right after finishing this book really gave me pause -- and made me think anyone who tries these "no cash or credit" techniques had better have good legal representation and advice, beforehand! Again, just my opinion.

Reading the book gave me the inspiration to "think out of the box" on how to go about this type of investing. But Mr. Reed's website gave me an equivalent dose of caution, common sense, and reality that I think is actually quite lacking in this book.

                        3 out of 5 stars Great Scripts.......2006-10-11

This book has many scripts that are of value for the new investor. The take aways and negative phrasing is invaluable. For someone new to sales it may seem a bit manipulative, but well that is after all what sales is to some extent. It is learning to negotiate in a way that moves the seller in the direction YOU want, so you are controling the situation. It is imperative that your intention is to create a win-win situation for all parties. You should not be trying to sell ice to eskimos as they say, as that is not really moral. Don't try to use these terms to rip off the elderly either, you won't sleep well at night.

I only gave this book 3 stars because both of Contis books in this series offer websites that say that there are all these goodies and when you go to the website you are frustrated to find that most of these goodies are no where to be found, so that is a BIG BUMMER.

                        5 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE.......2006-05-15

After reading this book, and working through the Investor Fast Track, I know that my net worth is more limited by my mindset or "WOS" (wealth operating system), than it is on finding good deals. Jim Rohn says all millionaires have libraries in their homes. Any real estate investor who wants to become a millionaire needs to have this book! I started investing 2 years ago after attending a local real estate seminar. With a limited amount of knowledge and a whole lot of inspiration, I started buying houses. Until this book, I have been learning through experience. I wish that I would have read this book before I began. It has a step by step easy to understand approach. It's not only good for a beginner but for someone who is stuck and not sure that they want to proceed. It gives you the knowledge and confidence to keep going. The free Investor Fast Track is worth a hundred times more than the full price cost of this book. It enables you to recognize, evaluate and improve your ideas about wealth in order to find out what is holding you back from doing million dollar deals. All I can say is thank you David Finkel for sharing your expertise with me. From now on the sky is the limit - that is if there has to be any limit at all.
