This is one of the most beautiful books I've ever encountered. The text is fascinating and intelligent and the illustrations are amazing, including some from the Devi Mahatmya that I have never seen before. Although it's pricey, it's well worth the money. Highly recommended

Learn about Teilhard De Chardin and Sri Aurobindo.......2006-01-25

This is an easy way to learn much about Teilhard De Chardin and Sri Aurobindo. However, I don't share their belief that consciousness occurs all the way down to ultimate particles. I believe that it dawned among those higher vertebrates which defend and nurture their offspring. Though social insects also behave this way, I view that as behavior mimicry. My view is that the invertebrates evolved into a dead end and the Teilhardian/Aurobindoan drive toward consciousness capitalized on the insects' astounding feats of mimicry to evolve societies which behave as if conscious.

I just didn't use it enough.......2005-05-01

If your trip to London is purely about shopping, then I would suggest this book. There is sooo much shopping in London, it can get boggling. However, I was there 8 days and that was not even enough time to see the sights I wanted to see, let alone shop. I did minimal shopping while in London because I was just so tired and my feet hurt so bad. I did flip through this book for Camden Town Markets and it had some info (very little) on that. This book is laid out more for if you know the store you want it will tell you where to find it. There is also a smaller section orgainzed by areas of London and what shops you can find there. There are no maps in this book so you'll need your own map if you are not familiar with the area. It also had very small sections on places to eat within the various shopping places. The size is not too large, but not tiny. You can carry it with you but in a larger size purse or bag. I would suggest foregoing this book if the main purpose of your London trip is NOT shopping. Otherwise, go for it!

A fashionista's must-have!.......2001-12-14

If you love shopping, or if you know someone who does, get this book. It's a great little guide to all THE best shops in London, from designer boutiques, to outlets, department stores, through to groovy little thrift markets.

This has certainly made my retail-therapy sessions a lot easier! The best part is that you can look up a street in the index, and find out all the shops on that street. SUCH a good idea. I looked up King's Road, and found I could buy everything there from a wedding-dress to a used biker jacket. Now, when I marry a Hell's Angel, I'm all set.

It takes all the legwork out of shopping. And the reviews are smart, wittily written, and tell you everything you need to know.

Now you need never be intimidated by snooty shop assistants ever again. When they say bitchy things to you, like, "Does madam need a size larger? Only we don't seem to stock one. Maybe two sewn together?" you can come STRAIGHT back with something like, "This is your third outlet, isn't it? Hmmm. I wonder why they didn't choose you to run the bigger branch..."

A small victory, but it matters.

I've never been prompted to write a review before, but this is such a cool little book. If this doesn't help you look like a supermodel - you need your reading-glasses fixed. (And this book will tell you where to do that, too.)

You can get guides to other shopping paradises, too - from New York, San Fran and Paris. I daren't even look, or I know I'll be blowing my shopping money on plane tickets.

Genius.

Better and bitter.......2001-01-30

As Robert Crumb grew up his comics sometimes became more imature but even though he might get more bitter his art work gets better. His stories get better. When he started he might have done simple comic gag but as he has got older those gags have mutated it hilarously well writen stories. Each Complete Crumb Comics is better than the last.

A warm and funny book.......2007-09-03

This is the first time I've read Pinkwater, and it won't be the last.

Pinkwater's marvelous book is a collection of stories from his life. He is an average joe, and speaks in a very straightforward and jovial way. It's the little details Pinkwater provides that make the stories funny and warm. Like for example, the way his favor would say "fish whistle".

A lot of zany characters also populate his past and make this book a joy to read. Pinkwater accurately captures these quirks without being mean spirited or making fun. He knows these people are different and doesn't fault them for it.

The parts of the book I loved the most were the stories in which Pinkwater is traveling. He is the quintessential American tourist. He is away from the US, but still wants to find little snatches of home, as shown by his (successful) search for a Jewish deli in Japan. But, he accepts his foibles and makes a go of it. He is entirely unpretentious about his personality and is unafraid to make fun of his mistakes. That lends a human element to this book.

A great book for any reader.

Pinkwater at his best.......1999-10-22

This collection of stories (most of which aird on NPR, I believe) is the best book on my bookshelf. The wrighting is brilliant, and humorous. Each piece is enjoyable because it is easy to identify with the events. I am always thinking about one story or another from this book, becuse they apply to real life so well. Buy this book if you are a fan of funny, honest stories.

This is a great book for fans of the incredible Miss Bassey and vocalist lovers alike. With beautiful reviews of her recordings and stagework and Bassey's own thoughts on picking songs, dresses and performing, this is a superb coffee table book too. But do beware for if you delve too deeply into the text, amazing inacurate facts can be found. For example every one knows that Goldfinger was written by Barry, Bricusse and Anthony Newley, yet Bassey quotes some other non entity? Overview: Great pics, superb presentation but did Bassey really write this? I suspect that it is ghost written but don't let this put you off. The only reason it gains 4 and not 5 stars from me is the occasional gaffes that lies in the text!

It is startling to turn from the simplistic questions found on recent television game shows to this collection of truly challenging and interesting questions. Mr. Hamel has accumulated a wide variety of questions and categorized them in the most ingenious ways. Although the difficulty of the questions reduces the joy of getting them correct, the connections Hamel makes between the questions and with other bits of trivia more than compensates.

Master piece, but nothing is perfect.......2002-03-20

Excellent book, it describes the management principles for the whole new product development (NPD) process. The graphical frameworks provide a valuable synthesis of knowledge. The practical examples are the right complement to their conceptual postulates. The book is highly advisable for all actors involved in the NPD process. However, it must be a "compulsory" reading for general managers and executives within manufacturing plants, because of its strategic orientation.
Specially delicious are the chapters about aggregate project plans (Ch. 4) and Structuring the Development funnel (Ch.5). They contain the basic principles to halt those managers that want to tackle all the projects with the same limited resources.
The only gap in the book is the unclear link between the "pre-project" stages of the development (Development goals and objectives, and Aggregate project plan), and the project management phase. The authors fail to clearly establish where the project leader and teams joint into the development. More specifically, project definition is missed on exhibit 2-11.

An excellent book on product development.......1999-12-02

This book, written in 1992, started a whole revolution in looking at the management of product development. Concepts like: the funnel to focus the organization on the right projects, an aggregate project plan, and the best two pages on project management that I have ever read are in this book. If you are planning to change your new product processes, this book is a necessity. Steven Wheelwright is a genius and you can read his brillance in this book.
