Like James MacNeill Whistler, David Wojnarowicz became briefly infamous in his own lifetime by taking a cultural conservative to court. Whistler's antagonist was none other than art critic John Ruskin, who likened Whistler's Nocturne in Black and Gold to flung paint. Whistler won the trial, but was awarded a penny; legal costs bankrupted him. Similarly, the constantly penurious Wojnarowicz sued Rev. Donald Wildmon of the American Family Association for copying an inset photograph from the artist's Sex series for use in anti-NEA propaganda. Wojnarowicz won an injunction, but was scantly compensated, and the NEA withdrew funding for the exhibition catalog where the series was reproduced.

Whistler was an American expatriate, Wojnarowicz a stranger in his own land, living "in the shadow of the American dream," as he put it, as a hustler, lover, and multimedia artist until his untimely death from AIDS. The New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, has mounted a retrospective of Wojnarowicz's work, with funding from Versace Classic, a corporate, rather than public, sponsor. Fever serves as the catalog as well as an excellent introduction to the artist's paintings, drawings, photographs, and writings. With no formal training and little support from the art establishment, Wojnarowicz managed to create a body of work that is complex, compelling, and politically engaged in a way that will remain relevant as long as critics posing as public guardians attempt to stifle art's persistent provocation. --Robert Burns Neveldine

    Book Description

David Wojnarowicz, who had lived on the streets of New York since he was thirteen, drew from his experiences on the margins of American society to recreate a passionate world of outsiders-hustlers and hobos, club kids and rednecks. After he was diagnosed with AIDS in the late 1980's, Wojnarowicz's art took on a sharply political edge, and from then until his death in 1992, he became entangled in highly public debates about medical research and funding, censorship in the arts, and politically sanctioned homophobia.

Fever: The Art of David Wojnarowicz is the first book to explore the extraordinary breadth of his work in film, installation, sculpture, photography, performance, and writing, as well as his considerable influence on artists and writers working today.

It features essays by leading art scholars, including New Museum senior curator Dan Cameron, along with excerpts from Wojnarowicz's own writings and previously unpublished material from the archives of the Wojnarowicz estate-works that cross literary lines, from memoir and fiction to political commentary and cultural critique.

5 out of 5 stars Good pictures and text.......2006-10-03

This book takes us from decade to decade from the 50's to now with an examination of social, cultural, economic, and historical factors both setting the backdrop to and influencing changing fashions. This is an intermediate book in fashion, if you compare it to picture-only books to the other end of the spectrum where text dominates (often no pictures), and we see a treatise on aesthetic theory, anthropological roots, feminist writings, and studies on human sexuality and psychology.

This book is a very light introduction to the type of questions you see in more advanced texts, but will not alienate the dilettante fashionista or costumer. The pictures provide exemplary examples of the styles discussed, and the chapters summarize everything quickly enough to have a solid overview of our recent fashion history. Again, I am sure this book will gain lots of interest, whether for browsing or seriously perusing an interest in a compelling aspect of human history and society. Check Steele's other books as well--she writes with insight, but doesn't overdo it with the dry academic stuff; she also has excellent taste with her picture selection.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent fashion primer for the last 50 years of the 20th C.......2003-11-09

This book has both beautiful photographs and informative text. The only reason I took off one star is that I think more photographs from each designer should have been included. I especially would have liked to have seen a few more photos of clothes from American designers from the 1990s. Throughout the book, the author mostly displays clothes made by European designers. I would not have expected much attention to be focused upon American designers before 1980s or 1990s. Arguably, it was not until the 1990s that American fashion really started to influence Europe, instead of the other way around. Because this reversal of influence was such a change, I would have expected more attention to be paid to it visually. Therefore, the lack of representation in this era makes me think that American designers were somewhat shortchanged in this book. However, I agree that all the designers selected, both European and American, did heavily influence their own time periods.

This book covers Post War 1940s through 1990s. In each era the author focused on a few key designers. The author chose Balenciaga, Balmain, and Dior to represent the 1940s and 1950s. The author primarily showcased Correges, Yves Saint Laurent, and Quant to represent the 1960s. Halston and Yves Saint Laurent were the focus of the 1970s era. More designers are represented in the 1980s. The book has one or two photos from Chanel, Lacroix, Blass, Herrera, Azzedine Alaia, Armani, Gaultier, Comme des Garcon, and Issey Miyake, among a few others. The 1990s are represented by a photo or two of designs from Versace, Anna Sui, Chanel, Tom Ford for Gucci, Galliano, Donna Karen, Westwood, Calvin Klein, and Prada.

Just as it is the maxim for fashion in general, so is it for this book in particular...less is more. The photos in this book capture the essence of each era and the text details the stylistic atmosphere to which each designer contributed. I highly reccommend this book. Despite having access to it at the library, I plan on buying it.

                      Book Description

FoxTrot cartoonist Bill Amend once again proves his knack for finding humor in everyday family life with his latest collection, Encyclopedias Brown and White. Not that any more proof needs to be offered. After all, more than 1,000 newspapers worldwide publish FoxTrot, and there are over two million copies of the strip's books in circulation. Encyclopedias Brown and White is the latest saga of the funny and frantic Fox family-composed of parents Roger and Andy, their two ego-centric teenagers Peter and Paige, 10-year old brainiac Jason, and pet iguana Quincy. The title plot finds Jason and Marcus donning detective hats in order to track down Phoebe's missing camp journal and clear their names. Wading through its funny 128 pages, long-time and new readers alike will gain a full appreciation for why fans have been raving about the strip for years.

5 out of 5 stars What a World of Merriment the FotTrot Gang is.......2007-02-18

I have been a faithful FoxTrot reader for years. Roger, Andy and their kids Peter, Paige and Jason are always good for a reality check with a large dose of laughter. I've got two girls and let me tell you, I see a lot of my kids in Paige with, I believe, even a healthy dose of Jason thrown in. And they have Peter's bottomless stomach. Of course, they're faithful FoxTrot readers too. I used to read the strip to them, explain what was going on, but now they get it just fine and we three all laugh together. Then my girls try and explain the strip to their dad, who pretends he doesn't get it.

The FoxTrot folks are a great family, one we sort of got used to checking up on every day, so we took the news that Mr. Amend was going to cease daily distribution of his wonderfully funny people and turn his strip to Sunday only, with a bit of sadness. Still, we have these terrific FoxTrot books to keep us going with our FoxTrot fix. Mr. Amend is to be commended for his great gift to our culture and his great gift to so many lives. I truly believe a laugh a day, helps keep the blues away and the FoxTrot gang are always good for a laugh. Heck there are a lot of laughs in the FoxTrot books. I know, I have them all and I am, along with my girls and my hubby dear, eagerly awaiting the next one.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention, we don't have an iguana, but my girls do have a pet gecko and, you guessed it, his name is Quincy.

5 out of 5 stars Encyclopedias Brown And White. Foxtrot, All Great!.......2007-01-19

I've been a Foxtrot reader for a long time and personally I think there is something suspiciously wrong with people who don't find Bill Amend's characters funny as all get out. If you want a good laugh, check out Bill in your local newspaper, or better yet, get one of the Foxtrot books. They are all great, really, they are.

Like many of Mr. Amend's fans I'm a bit disappointed he's switching his strip to Sunday-only, but fortunately I can still read him daily in the Foxtrot books. Get them one and all and you can keep right on a laughing.

1 out of 5 stars two thumbs down.......2003-07-11

I'm sorry, but that book stunk!

It deffinetly could have used some more jokes. i mean, I barely cracked a smile reading this! Mr. Amend, if you read this, take my advice. Lighten up, man!

5 out of 5 stars "If you're in a jam, call JAM." An Excellent Collection.......2003-02-09

Whenever I am down or am just having the worst day in the world, I usually need to read or watch something funny. A lot of times I read comics like Calvin and Hobbes and FoxTrot. FoxTrot is always funny and is able to get more than a laugh or two out of me. Here is another excellent FoxTrot collection by the great Bill Amend; "Encyclopedias Brown and White."

There's more chaos and insanity going on in the Fox household than ever before. Jason is aggravating his sister, Paige, Roger is driving his wife up the wall, and Peter is eating just about anything he can get his hands on. They are still just as outrageous as ever and can still surprise us even when we think they can't do any better.

Some of the stuff you will find in this collection:
                      *Peter's cell phone
*Detectives Jason and Marcus tries to solve a crime
                      *Roger and his homemade wine
                      *Paige's Robo-Pup
                      *Varsity e-football (wha?)
                      *Nosecracker dreams, and much more!

I found this collection of FoxTrot comics to be extremely funny and entertaining. Amend never ceases to be funny and is always looking for something new and clever to write. These collections are also very easy to read over and over again, without it losing any of it's humor. Jason driving his sister insane is always fun to see!

So if you love FoxTrot, then "Encyclopedias Brown and White" is the one for you. Filled with witty humor, outrageous situations, and memorable lines, this is a great read for anyone who's looking for a little humor and entertainment.

4 out of 5 stars Same old, same old... but good as ever!.......2002-10-28

Foxtrot is finally getting to the point where the strips seem familiar even when they are brand new. Still, it's one of my favorite strips for the charactors and brand of humor... and I'll keep reading (and buying!) until this one turns into another Garfield or fades off into the sunset like C&H.

Since the game's origins, people have always tried to improve baseball and its equipment. All the baseball inventions of the last hundred years -- the ones that made it and many that didn't -- are here in one entertaining volume. From mechanical umpires and bases that ring when the runner touches them to semi-automatic fungo bats, all are described in humorous prose and many are illustrated with U.S. Patent Office drawings and photos.

                          Book Description

In the film world today, there is extraordinary attention paid to actors, actresses and directors, yet the producers who gave many of them their first breaks and helped mold their careers have managed to remain outside the limelight. This work covers producers who gave early breaks to actors and actresses like Al Pacino and Demi Moore, directors like Steven Spielberg and Todd Haynes, and writers like Aaron Sorkin. These legends may never have become known if not for their producers' behind-the-scenes insight and ability to recognize talent.

Interviewees include David Brown (Jaws, A Few Good Men), Martin Richards (Chicago, The Shining), Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson (Goldeneye, Die Another Day), Dino DeLaurentiis (La Strada, Hannibal), Michael Phillips (Taxi Driver, The Sting), Martin Bregman (Serpico, Scarface), Lauren Shuler Donner (You've Got Mail, X-Men), Robert Chartoff (Rocky, Raging Bull), Mace Neufeld (The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games), Paula Wagner (Vanilla Sky, Mission: Impossible), and many, many more!

                          Book Description

There's no place like home for the holidays ...which is a good thing when you have a family like Robert Earl Keen's. As Keen tells it in this wry send-up of all those impossibly sweet, "not like our family" Christmas carols, Mom and Dad got drunk at the Christmas party, sister and brother brought their dubious significant others, the relatives' motor home blew out the Christmas lights, and a convenience store supplied all the goodies.

Merry Christmas from the Family is the companion book for Robert Earl Keen's popular Christmas tune of the same name. Using authentic Keen family photos, recipes, and craft instructions, it illustrates all the verses of the song, which you can sing along with on the accompanying CD. Whether you're one of Robert Earl's legion of fans, or you've just had enough of Perry, Bing, and the other crooners, Merry Christmas from the Family is what you need to keep the holidays in hilariously skewed perspective.

                          5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-01-18

I have always loved this song and was so glad that I bought this release with the book. The song is even better after reading the book.

5 out of 5 stars Hallelujah, Everybody Say Cheese..........2005-12-07

I have loved "Merry Christmas From the Family" by Robert Earl Keen since the very first time I ever heard it. I was initially exposed to this song on a cable access TV show, "Viva and Jerry's Country Videos" (which is hilarious in its own right). I hadn't caught the name of the artist, so I called Viva herself and she told me to look up Robert Earl Keen. I did so, bought a couple of albums and generally liked them, but this song (and his video that goes with it) remains my favorite of his works.

This book/CD combination is very nicely produced and is basically a funny color collage telling the story of the song. The CD has my favorite version of the song on it so you can follow along if you want, or more likely just listen and laugh.

I have given several of these as gifts over the last few years and they always get rave reviews. It's kind of sad that there is more than a little truth in the song, but nonetheless it's funny, dryly tongue-in-cheek, and very well done. While this may never overtake "Silent Night" or "O Come All Ye Faithful" in the pantheon of the world's most popular Christmas songs, it has a unique charm that is like nothing else, and I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars Great stocking stuffer or intro to REK for your friends.......2002-01-03

Well, Robert Earl Keen himself said this was more of a greeting card than great literature. I think it's a delightful presentation of one of REK's best-loved songs. It's chockful of lyrics, pictures (did you know that Fran and Rita are both women?), recipes (for all those great drinks sung about), lists (10 Things You Can Do with Fake Snow, 10 Things You Won't Find in a Convenience Store), and Texas-style fun. And it includes a CD to boot, so you can listen while you read along. This is a hoot--and at this price, you can buy one for yourself and all your friends. Spread the love from the fam-o-lee!

5 out of 5 stars Laugh until you cry.......2001-12-24

This is by far the funniest thing I have seen, heard, and read in a long, long time! A must have for anyone with a sense of humor!

5 out of 5 stars The Looking Glass reflection of my life!.......2001-11-11

If you are a fan of Rober Earl Keen- I mean a fan of all his stuff from the rowdy staples "Road Goes on Forever" and "Copenhagen" to the skillfull subtle songwriting exhibited in No Kinda Dancer, and West Textures.

If this is you, then you will aprreciate this book. In short it is a hysterically illustrated version, verse by verse of his epic Chrismas Song "Merry Christmas From the Family". It is designed by esteemed Nashville graphic designer Buddy Jackson, and it is done with wit and humor in keeping with the songs' lyrics.(...)

Reading this book and Delivering KYSOS has convicted me of many errors in attitude and performance and shows that excellent customer service does not have to be drudgery and can really be fun!

Furthermore, as a side benefit, I have begun to apply KYSOS in my personal life as well, and am really enjoying it. It has also made me aware of excellent service when I receive it, and I now feel obligated to compliment the deliverer (and sometimes the manager!) rather than simply be served and move on.

You don't have to work in a traditional Customer Service role to benefit. No matter what your work is, you have customers - your bosses, shareholders, executives, your secretaries and clerical help, your vendors, etc. And if you are out of work, your potential employers and interviewers are your customers!

Don't buy this book or any in the Knock Your Socks Off series unless you are prepared to make some basic changes in your general attitude that will make your work and your personal life more rewarding and a lot more fun!

                              5 out of 5 stars KYSOS Reflection.......2001-11-06

As a college student, I found this book very helpful not only for my future career in Consumer Services, but also in my currant part time position. One thing I have gained from this book is confidence. I feel that KYSOS did a great job in covering necessary topics and explained each with great detail. The real life stories and examples helped me put things into perspective and apply them to my currant job. I now have learned that the basis of quality customer service is not how much money the company makes, or how many products we produce, but by the many other topics covered by this book. It all starts with hiring the right people. I really enjoyed this book and I will refer back to it many times in the future!
