Book Description
This intriguing book on Goya concentrates on the closing years of the eighteenth century as a neglected milestone in his life.
Goya waited until 1799 to publish his celebrated series of drawings, the Caprichos, which offered a personal vision of the "world turned upside down". Victor I. Stoichita and Anna Maria Coderch consider how themes of Revolution and Carnival (both seen as inversions of the established order) were obsessions in Spanish culture in this period, and make provocative connections between the close of the 1700s and the end of the Millennium. Particular emphasis is placed on the artist's links to the underground tradition of the grotesque, the ugly and the violent. Goya's drawings, considered as a personal and secret laboratory, are foregrounded in a study that also reinterprets his paintings and engravings in the cultural context of his time.

Book Description
The stoic bushido world of Samurai Executioner is one full of flying, disembodied heads, and odd happenings. And this volume is no exception. There are always stories of crimes and ensuing punishment, and plenty of squirting blood, but this volume promises a story that will fascinate and produce a few grins. A mysterious woman, with a turtle-like demon tattooed on her back and the ability to swim like no other, is stealing weapons of men around Edo. It's scarring egos and causing lots of problems. Of course, Asa has the answer to the mystery. And in a surprise turn, a samurai cop who we've met before finally captures the woman, and does so in a rather erotic way.
Customer Reviews:
There are those who would stay the Samurai Executioner from his appointed tasks.......2005-11-30
"Shinko the Kappa," Volume 6 in the collected "Samurai Executioner" tales of Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima, continues our look at crime and punishment in Edo-period Japan. There are six stories in this particular volume and they represent an interesting combination of those that deal with intriguing ways of trying to prevent Kubikiri Asa, better known as Decapitator Asaemon, from carrying out an execution and those that deal with the flora of Japan. There are also a pair of surprising weddings along the way. The title of this volume, the release of which I have been waiting for patiently for some time, comes from a character who is central to a rare two-part story from Koike and Kojima (apparently it takes a while for Marc Miyake to do the translations and for SNO Cone Studios to do the requisite lettering and retouching). Just remember that, "Punished is not the man himself, but the evil that resides in him":
(23) "Gobari Sandosu" is the best story in this collection. The former refers to those who work in the five domains: racketeers, gamblers, the night soil collectors of Kasai, the forty-eight bands of firefighters, and the Orisuke servants of the Daimyo's, while the latter are those in the three long sword-wearing professions. A man who is the heir of the Kyakujiri group in charge of night soil collection (i.e., sanitation workers) is due to be executed, but he has connections across the Gobari and the Sandosu, and they will do everything in their power to prevent the Executioner from carrying out his charge. However, they have no idea who they are dealing with and what makes this a standout story is that Asa does more than find a way to cut off this guy's head. He also diffuses the situation in a surprising way.
(24) "To Be a Sunflower" is the final request of a condemned man who made it a point of honor always to kill his victims face-to-face and never from behind. We learn both how he got his nickname as the "Sunflower," and the irony of his final request at the moment of execution.
(25) "Penpen Grass" is a rare flashback episode as a condemned man threatens to make the executioner's roof grow penpen grass (Shepherd's Purse). This sends Asaemon down memory lane when the other kids made fun of the headchopper's son because of the penpen grass growing on the roof. The young Yoshitsugu learns about why the grass is considered curse and then circumstances teach him that it has other value as well. Certainly it is interesting to see a different representation of the relationship between father and son than what we saw in "Lone Wolf & Cub."
(26) "Shinko the Kappa" is a mysterious woman with a turtle-like demon ("kappa" is a water sprite) tattooed on her back and the ability to swim like a fish. She has been stealing the weapons of men around Edo in what proves to be an attempt to blackmail the authorities from carrying out an execution. In what is the first of a two-part story, Shinko is captured by Kasajiro, the legendary police officer who has learned a thing or two from Asaemon. However, Shinko has a thing or two to teach him as well in a story that justifies the Parental Advisory label for Explicit Content that is affixed to the front cover.
(27) "A Couple of Umbrellas" begins with the authorities all happy that Shinko the Kappa has been captured. But they are surprised when Kasajiro makes a startling request to save her from meeting the same fate as her father and Asaemon decides to intervene in the matter as well. We should have known that romance in this violent world was going to be decidedly different.
(28) "Facing the Dew" is a briefly and almost wordless vignette in which Asaemon allows one of the condemned to plant a small flower next to the place of execution. This makes for a nice little bookend with "To Be a Sunflower."
For those looking to fill the void left after completing the 28-volume "Lone Wolf & Cub" series should find this other series by Koike and Kojima to be more than adequate to the task. I just wish that Dark Horse was publishing these a bit more quickly, but they fell behind schedule with final "Lone Wolf" volumes and have yet to catch up. Final Note: The blue on the bottom of the cover of the book in my possession is decidedly lighter than what is pictured above, so be forewarned.
Book Description
Amy Krouse Rosenthal's fresh, Seinfeld-esque humor taps into the minutiae of everyday life with "that-is-so-true" insight and sets itself apart with its smart, witty, and delightfully quirky nature. Each chapter comprises-you guessed it-11 random thoughts on subjects such as movies, restaurants, death, olives, sex, and answering machines. Why 11? You have to buy the book to find out.
Customer Reviews:
Humor with a twist.......2001-01-22
A unique, quirky twist on observational humor. Ms. Rosenthal has a knack for capturing the minutiae of life with a concise and fresh wit. I think eleven is a funny number and, after reading this hilarious compilation of lists of eleven, you will too.
Finally! There is someone out there who thinks like I do.......2000-12-01
This book is absolutely hilarious! I enjoy reading humor, but rarely find anything written funny enough to laugh out loud about. This book changed that. I spent the whole book laughing as well as pondering.
This is a great, quick read that can be enjoyed over and over. Buy one for yourself and some as gifts, their great!!!
Not That Clever After All.......2000-04-09
I really wanted to be heartily entertained by this book. Not having read any prior work by this author I was very hopeful. However, this Seinfield-esque "brain lint" just did not translate in print as well as it might have had Jerry and Elaine done an episode based on it. Maybe this type of humor is already getting old - or maybe I am - I just found it neither clever nor all that funny. I kept reading waiting for the funny parts, but feeling instead as if I'd been duped into purchasing something that hadn't required much originality or effort from the author after all. But, perhaps I expected too much having seen all those five stars.
I love Amy. You will too........1998-12-30
This book (and its author, whom I've never met but feel like I have) are witty, funny, intelligent, crazy, insightful, silly, sexy, and kinda stupid sometimes. Sound good? It is.
Witty humor I think of everday, I wish I would have written.......1998-12-20
This book is absolutely hilarious! I am a high school student, and these are things that come into my mind, and many of my friend's minds on a daily basis. All I can say, this is stuff that most of us don't think to put onto paper. I wish I would have written it. But, hey, great job to Amy!

Wowza Yowza, I agree with Every ONE!.......1999-01-29
This is far better and more in-depth than the first edition, and the author only seems to get better with every version. He's become more eclectic in his choices, my god, there's some kinky stuff in there (read the review on FIREWATER!) and he has smaller companies, like Brush Creek and Titan, not just the BIG obnoxious ones like Catalina, Centaur etc. Can't wait 'til the 2000 version to see what this expert picks! I thought I knew 'em all!

One Book You Should Own!.......2001-03-12
This is one book you should have before you go out there and rent any gay adult video. It will save you a lot of wasted time watching dull, boring videos. It's a good book to have for reference before you buy or rent any gay adult video. Mickey Skee knows his videos, and probably should after going to 50 adult video shoots every year. What a job! I always await his new listings every year because it makes it so easy to find the best videos, especially when there is so many out there to choose from.
Each video is summarized, and Mickey tells us why he thinks it's one of the best, and gives us some behind the scenes information you won't find anywhere else. If you enjoy Gay Adult Videos this book is a must. I look forward each year to his new edition, and I'm never disappointed.
Pretty decent and helpful book!.......2000-08-11
I truly like the behind-the-scenes and I wonder if this authorhas had special liaisons with the star. I was shocked to see how handsome and sexy the author is too in the back of the book and that he's in every book with Ken Ryker or Ty Fox or Ryan Idol. He truly knows them all. He is lucky to visit them and has appeared in some videos himself, but I think only two of them has his with his predigious prod showing. I like reading anything this guy writes ...seems like he really enjoys the world of porn.
A Must for Gay Porn Lovers.......2000-06-27
This book is awesome! It has cool pictures and awesome behind the scenes gossip about who was doing who, when where and how! Totally awesome by itself, but it also helps to give information about the various films

Book Description
Melopoetics, the study of the multifarious relations between music and literature, has emerged in recent years as an increasingly popular field of interdisciplinary inquiry. In this volume, noted musicologists and literary critics explore diverse topics of shared concern such as literary theory as a model for musical criticism, genre theories in literature and music, the criticism and analysis of texted music and the role of aesthetic, historical and cultural understanding in concepts of text/music convergence. These fourteen essays - united here not by a common ideology but by common subject matter - demonstrate how musical and literary scholarship can combine forces effectively on the common ground of contemporary critical theory and interpretive practice. The concluding essay by interdisciplinary historian Hayden White locates this ambitious enterprise of contemplating 'music and text' in the larger context of intellectual history.

Customer Reviews:
Clear and concise.......2007-04-27
This is a clear and concise (59 pages) overview of Gin Rummy with excellent advice on general play and strategy. Compared to Fraed's book on Gin Rummy, this was an absolute pleasure to read and although it is short, it packs in far more useful information than many larger books do. I'm no Gin master (yet), but i am a professional writer and I can tell you that this book is worth buying.
Good book for gin beginners.......2006-02-01
This is a good book for gin beginners. Probably, the first book you should read on gin.
Good beginner book.......2005-09-16
Good intro to gin, but not enough in-depth material. Good for anyone new to the game.
A great buy for any player.......2005-04-26
This book is great for the beginner or the intermediate player of any experience level. The rules are clearly explained; even if you have not played before you can learn easily. It offers great strategy that's easy to understand. Although not a lengthy book, it sure is a helpful one. It has helped me improve my game, and it can do the same for you.
Best of those I've read.......1999-12-01
More of a booklet than a book - only 59 pages - but it's the most cogent of the lot. I can't speak about the Killebrew book, which has had many positive reviews - but I've read the rest, and this is the best.
Customer Reviews:
Rambling and incoherant.......2007-04-27
It doesn't matter how good at something someone is, if they don't write well a book by them will be substandard. This is the case here. The book is rambling and incoherant, and by the end i was more confused than enlightened regarding Gin strategy. It's written more like a biography than a book on game strategy and it's not a particularly interesting biography anyway. Don't buy this book. Get Sam Fry's instead: it is less than half the size but teaches you more than twice as much about Gin Rummy!
Would have given 3.5 if I could have.......2006-09-07
I need to start by saying I am at best a beginning player. However, the game I was taught by 3 different people as gin rummy is somewhat different than the game described in this book and not a variation listed in the back. Therefore, I have evaluated this book from the eyes of someone who has not really played "classic gin rummy".
I thought the book deserved more than 3 stars as "ok" but hated to say I really "liked" it. I found the author interesting in his anecdotal style but found it hard to learn from as a beginner. I would have appreciated a bit more discussion at the beginning about the basics of the game and the two ways to win a game and more examples of scoring. He gives lots of examples elsewhere and it would have made a couple things clearer for me since my questions were not answered in the basic text.
I got the book to learn a bit of strategy to beat my card playing brother-in-law. Since I was taught to play with fewer cards and often with more than one person but not with a partner, the playing strategies were not as applicable for the game we play but I did learn a bit. I am sure with more play I will come to understand some of the concepts better.
What I will say for the book is that it made me want to learn the classic game of gin rummy. I had not realized it was even played for money or that there are tournaments in places like Las Vegas or Reno. I thought it was the stuff of movies, southern gentlemen in white suits with mustaches and country clubs. I think that after I play the classic game I will come to realize the value of this book and find that it definitely qualifies for that 4th star.
Good Tips for Partnership Gin, .......2006-02-08
The author provides good tips for partnership gin. However, his analysis of regular gin is best suited for beginners only. There are better books for singles players.
This is a tremendous book.......2004-04-08
I would like to disagree with the reviewer who said "poor author and teacher." Fraed doesn't give simple formulas or easy answers. That's good, because gin rummy is not that simple! But the answers are there, hiding in Fraed's examples and discussion. You have to work at gin over the table, and you should expect to work at reading a text on it.
I think I found one little mistake on page 92, but that's nitpicking. ;)
People interested in this book should also read the review by ckill2015 of Gin Rummy at its best -- which is basically the same book. C Killebrew had one of the most incredible records of all time playing gin on the internet and in real life.
Good player, poor author and teacher.......2000-09-01
This book is almost totally useless in teaching gin rummy to a relatively new player. It utilizes primarily an anecdotal approach using exclusively examples from games in which the author has played. While this may be interesting to the author's friends and competitors, it is of little or no interest to a member of the general public. Do not waste your time with this book unless you know the author.
Customer Reviews:
Worth every penny.......2006-02-01
This is a book by a winner of a gin tournament in Las Vegas in 1958. Mr. Wander takes you step by step to how he would play a game to 200 using Oklahoma rules and his random card hands. He definitely plays the hands a little different than most people on certain types of hands. I would suggest this and Jacoby Gin Rummy All American Roundup as must reads for every gin player. This is the same book as the hardback by Wander titled Expert Guide to Winning at Gin which was published in 1965. This is the paperback reprint from 1974.
Book Description
Barron's Business Keys have gained deserved reputations as easy-to-read books of sound advice for consumers and non-experts. These brief, fact-filled volumes cut through business and financial jargon and speak to consumers in plain English. They offer information and advice on saving, investing, protecting one's assets, coping with taxes, and prudent management of personal finances. Updated to reflect the current real estate market, this book presents an informed view of the advantages and potential pitfalls connected with buying foreclosed and bargain properties. Various sources are described including lending institutions, the FHA, the Farmer's Home Administration, and others. There are valuable tips for buying at auction and for taking advantages of special programs such as urban homesteading.
Customer Reviews:
Very General.......2005-06-28
This book is so general that you will not learn how to do anything. You will learn the lingo and basic description of auctions and forclosures but it does not go into depth about anything specific. If you have any specific questions and/or research topics this is not the book. If you are completely clueless and never owned a house this is your book.
Keys to Buying Foreclosed & Bargain Homes.......2003-09-16
This book was extremely disappointing. It is too high level and superficial to provide any actionable information. It provides the same level of detail I'd expect from a magazine article, not a book.
Over simplified and short.......2002-10-02
I've read about 6 books on real estate bought from Amazon, and I have to say that this one is the most oversimplified. It is like reading one of those "pocket MBA" books, which just tells you terms and procedures. Don't expect to read this book and be able to transact "foreclosed and bargain homes". It is far from that! For instance, the chapters on how to identify and find a "bargain" home comes down to this: look it up at a bank, MLS, or internet. Heck! I could have told you that for free! Given that that is the most important step, I was really disappointed with this book. Don't waste your money...
If you want to buy an overview or basics book on home buying I sugget the "Unofficial Guide to Buying a Home" which is much more detailed and straightforward about buying a home. And it covers in better details what are the pitfalls of buying a bargain home.
A good read for those searching for discounted real estate........2002-01-15
I got this book because I became disenchanted with attempting to purchase real estate through tax liens and was searching for a better way. What I have found by reading this book is that it is possible to purchase real estate at a discount if one is willing to do the leg work.
The authors do a good job defining bargain homes, dicussing strategies on getting the best price and locating repossessed homes. Also the book has a useful glossary, helpful checklist and locations of Hud and VA offices around the country.
Concise and easy to read.......2001-12-02
This book is wonderful for the novice trying to learn about the business of investing in real estate. There is not a wasted word in this book and each chapter is only 2-3 pages long so it can be read inbetween commericals during a movie. I read over half the book during one movie.
There are helpful checklists and nuggets of suggestions that should help anyone wanting to buy a house or an investment such as Exhibit 1 showing how prices tend to change according to the season and the General Checklist to apply to any property you are considering buying. There are addresses for all the Hud offices in the US. There are tables to calculate mortgage payments based on the interest rate and there is an excellent explaination of the foreclosure process.
This a nugget of a book written in an extrememly readable and digestable manner. It may be a little too basic for experienced real estate investors but it is perfect for those just starting to learn the subject. I wish I had this book when I bought my first house and anyone facing foreclosure could benefit from reading it as well to understand the process.
