Book Description
Don and Jenny Killgallon's sentence-composing approach has transformed how writing is taught in thousands of language arts classes, helping students all across America become more proficient, sophisticated writers. Now the Killgallons use their highly effective method for a unique, powerful textbook that links good writing to that perennially difficult-to-teach subject - grammar.
Grammar for Middle School: A Sentence-Composing Approach gives your students the chance to absorb and replicate the grammatical structures used by some of the best writers of our times. Included among the over 150 authors, 200 titles, and 400 model sentences in Grammar for Middle School are award-winning young-adult literature such as Cynthia Voigt's Homecoming, popular favorites like J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter, and curricular staples such as John Steinbeck's The Red Pony and The Pearl.
Fourteen grammatical structures are developed in the same predictable, understandable manner, using the sentence-composing approach. When students first encounter a tool, it is clearly defined and characterized. Then it's practiced through five activities: matching, unscrambling, combining, imitating, and expanding. Finally, a creative writing activity immerses students in the composition or revision of a paragraph through independent use of the sentence - composing tools they have already learned. Best of all, after each section, review activities - which can be easily graded as unit or final tests - offer opportunities for students to bring it all together and build better sentences.
An accompanies Grammar for Middle School and includes advice, tips, resources, answer keys, and even curricular plans for teachers who are either new to the Killgallon approach or sentence-composing veterans.
No one can forge the link between grammar and writing like Don and Jenny Killgallon. Discover for yourself or rediscover how powerful the sentence - composing approach can be, and watch as your students get grammar like never before - and write better sentences too.

Book Description
With the first edition of his book, Don Killgallon changed the way thousands of high school English teachers and their students look at language, literature, and writing by focusing on the sentence. In this revised edition, Killgallon presents the same proven methodology but offers all-new writing exercises designed specifically for the middle school student.
Unlike traditional grammar books that emphasize the parsing of sentences, this worktext asks students to imitate the sentence styles of professional writers, making the sentence composition process an enjoyable and challenging one. Killgallon teaches subliminally, nontechnically--the ways real writers compose their sentences, the ways students subsequently intuit within their own writing.
Designed to produce sentence maturity and variety, the worktext offers extensive practice in four sentence-manipulating techniques: sentence unscrambling, sentence imitating, sentence combining, and sentence expanding. All of the activities are based on model sentences written by widely respected authors. They are designed to teach students structures they should but seldom use. The rationale is that imitation and practice are as valuable in gaining competence and confidence in written language production as they are in oral language production.
Since the practices have proven successful for the great majority of students who have used them in all kinds of schools, it's demonstrably true that Sentence Composing can work anywhere--in any school, with any student.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource for teaching Grammar.......2007-09-03
I first learned about this author at a CATE Conference in 2001. I hestitated at first, but after boring my students with other methods I tried the sentence composing approach Killgallon uses and the results were excellent. The kids not only enjoyed learning the grammar but they actually asked to do the sentence composing. The students saw the sentence composing as a puzzle to be solved instead of another boring lesson on the parts of speech and the usage of punctuation.

Atheist Universe: The Thinking Person's Answer to Christian Fundamentalism
ASIN: 0966520866 |
Book Description
"Queen Jane's Version, The Holy Bible for Adults Only" (QJV) is an outrageous parody, chapter and verse, of the King James Version (KJV). Throughout the text, graphic icons flag the most scandalous scriptures, while contemporary language (including epithets and sexually-explicit slang where appropriate) exposes and holds up for ridicule all the flaws, errors, contradictions, debaucheries, atrocities, obscenities, and absurdities that fill the "original" KJV. Though the QJV is often radical, cynical, sarcastic, blasphemous, and bawdy, the purpose of such an approach is to inspire people to live life for life rather than for death, for reality rather than for mind-crippling myth. Subtlety often makes its humor cunningly deceptive, and its variety of writing styles mirrors the many differences of tone and temperament in the "original". As a whole, it is an iconoclastic, biting, often shocking satire that mocks religious hypocrisy and the gullibility of hard-core believers.
Customer Reviews:
What the Bible really says.......2002-12-05
This is a Bible paraphrasing (not a translation) that illuminates the Bible's status as the most morally depraved obscenity ever written (with de Sade's Juliette and Hitler's Mein Kampf fighting it out for second and third place). The Bible's ethical bankruptcy is particularly visible in QJV's rendition of Genesis 4:5. When Cain made Yahweh an offering of his best fruit and vegetables, while Abel offered an animal he had killed, "This was just the first of many instances in which Yaahvey Geehovah will show favoritism for no rational reason." While Queen Jane's Version will not cure incurables, it should give the pragmatically religious something to think about.
Entertaining to say the least........2000-05-25
Well, it can't be said that Douglas Rankin didn't warn you, you really can't miss the page devoted to the parental advisory. Tipper Gore would be happy.
This book is definitely not for the faint of heart, given the frankness in language and details that Rankin uses in this version of the Bible (I always wondered what the real story between Noah and Ham was in Genesis 9:20-25... boy, did my Sunday school teacher gloss over that one!) Whether the QJV is an accurate 'translation' of the KVJ or not, I'll leave that determination to the scholars, but the verses I compared while reading through this book seemed dead-on. There is no doubt that Rankin spent a considerable amount of time putting this together, and I have to admit I found it fresh and entertaining, and very funny. Considering the source, that's a massive undertaking. Of course, there is a point to it all, and reading through the QJV one realizes just how disturbing the Bible can be.
To be sure, some individuals won't like this version at all, and instead of reading stories from this version around the campfire, they'll be using it AS the campfire. What a pity.
The Christian Bible . the Naked Truth.......1999-10-12
This Version of the Bible is a must read for all. It reveals the true nature of religion and it's true purpose. By cutting to the hard core psychological base of human mind control. With thousands of years of refined propaganda technology in it's box of mental tricks, religion is opened like a can of slithering worms. With the slippery and devious underground stories being dug up and used as bait for the gullible and the ignorant. I give Douglas Rankin 5 stars for his candor and humor to bring to light the wisdom of the Christian Bible with all it's lies, gore and stupidity! This will be a family Bible to be treasured like no other! I say lets have the Queen Jane in every library, school and church! AMEN!
This book is great.......1999-07-12
It really opened my eyes up to the amount of filth that the bible really contains
How NOT to Persaude Christians to Abandon Christianity.......1999-05-20
Douglas A. Rankin, a linguist and freethinker, has modified the King James Version of the Bible so that all the sex, scatology, violence, and so forth therein is stated in plain, unambiguous, and uncensored language. The book also includes a system of well-drawn icons that mark for the reader those portions of the text that involve the types of content Rankin wishes to highlight (a snoozing moon for the boring parts, a urinating child for scatology, a Dracula face for canibalism, a copulating heterosexual couple for heterosexual sex passages, and so forth). Yet _Queen Jane's Version_ is much more than a translation of the King James Version into contemporary English. The book is designed to be "an iconoclastic, biting, often shocking satire that mocks religious hypocrisy and the gullibility of hard-core believers." According to Rankin, the purpose of such an approach is to inspire people to live life for life rather than for death, for reality rather than for mind-crippling myth." Yet, given the book's antagonistic approach, I think it is highly unlikely that the book will accomplish anything besides alienating Christians. In marketing terms, this book is a "high negative."

Nightmare, USA: The Untold Story of the Exploitation Independents
ASIN: 1560255552 |
Book Description
A pioneer of independent cinema, Roger Corman is a fascinating study in contrasts. As the original King of the Exploitation Film, he has filled his movies with images of blood-sucking vampires, rampaging biker gangs, vigilante strippers, and abducting aliens, all while producing each of his four-hundred-plus films on a shoestring budget and making a profit on nearly every one. In the process, Corman became the role model for today’s independent filmmaker. This guru with a vision has also demonstrated an uncanny eye for talent, being among the first to recognize and employ the abilities of Jack Nicholson, Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Jonathan Demme, Joe Dante, Ron Howard, John Sayles, and James Cameron to name but a few. Through interviews with eighty of Corman’s friends and associates and photographs, Beverly Gray takes you behind the cameras and into the heart of Cormanville for a firsthand, insider’s look at the man and the mogul, providing a compelling private and public perspective on this soft-spoken giant of the cinema.
Customer Reviews:
Kudos from Creating Characters author Marisa D'Vari.......2005-09-03
This fascinating "biography" is really a savvy "how to" book that belongs on the shelf of every screenwriter, aspiring producer, director, and development executive -- and everyone else who loves films and craves to know the secrets of Hollywood's most colorful mogul.
I found it fun to read as a realistic "behind the scenes" glimpse of what it takes to be a profitable mogul, such as the way Corman hired young cheap "promising" talent instead of going for experience. Directors fresh out of film school reading this book, for example, can get a good feel for the mindset and financial situation of producers they interview with. Screenwriters will learn how Corman and team (Gray had been his development executive) managed to write and produce so many successful films quickly.
Few books reveal the inner machinations of a successful producer so intimately. Gray, a screenwriting teacher at UCLA, has done a spectacular job of showcasing the life story of an intruiging man through more than eighty interviews and via her own experience.
Corman Exposed.......2005-08-24
Wow! Talk about switching personalities! This amazing biographer can emit the style of the person she is writing about to really give you a flavor of the personality. And of course, she spent time working for him, so you are privy to more of a view. Written somewhat bruskly like Roger's personality, you really gain insight into his life and what made him the person he is. Contrast this book with Beverly's biography of Ron Howard and you see some of the exceptional talent of this lady. A great read!
Roger Corman:.......2005-03-20
I have to agree with the other five-star reviews. "Roger Corman: Blood-Sucking Vampires, Flesh-Eating Cockroaches, and Driller Killers" is the best book on the subject, the subject being the most unique American studio head in film history.
Beverly Gray really paints a nuanced picture of Corman and never panders to the fans, the haters, or her old boss Corman himself. Though it's impossible to pull back the curtains entirely and see into a man's soul, Gray seems to have at least pulled back one side, giving us as much a glimpse as is possible without telepathy.
Storywise, Corman is, as always, fascinating, and Gray's perfectly detailed retelling of his story is the best yet written.
Driller Killers and Roger Corman, Of Course.......2004-06-08
(...)
Gray's biography--fun as it is-- is more than a story about a man who is arguably one of Hollywood's most idiosyncratic moguls. It is a chronicle that parallels that of The Great Depression, World War II, the growth of the film industry and Los Angeles itself. We meet again celebrities we haven't thought about in years like the adorable dimpled Jon Davison, the memorable Vincent Price and even run across pop culture icons like Frank Gorshin.
Occasionally this book is burdened with glitz-town detail that only a dedicated film buff might adore but these moments are rare. Like a super hero, Corman--now 75 and still going--is resilient because he is multi-faceted. The same can be said for screenwriter cum UCLA instructor and journalist Beverly Gray. The two seem admirably paired in that way. Gray uses her many experiences and talents to tell the story of a man of many parts.
(...)
Roger Corman: An Unauthorized Biography.......2003-11-12
Beverly Gray's superbly written, readable, and extensively documented biography of Roger Corman maintained my interest and gave me an understanding of his complex personality and career. The book also gives an insider's view into many Hollywood personalities, including a number of his disciples, cohorts, and acquaintances. The insightful prevailing theme of the book is Corman's internal struggle between his artistry and his bottom-line business concern, resulting in settling for small but memorable low-budget achievement rather than for potential professional greatness as a filmmaker. Ms. Gray draws on the personal insights she has gained on Corman from her almost ten years as his development executive. She also does a remarkable job in presenting the enormous multiplicity of his sources and story lines, including the anti-establishment themes of the 1960's and 1970's.

Book Description
Though often misunderstood in the West, the works of Toru Takemitsu (1930-1996) deserve attention beyond their native land. Although he wrote most of his music for Western instruments in international contemporary concert style, to be played by performers trained in the European musical tradition, lists and scores of his music have been difficult to obtain. Designed for use by musicians, scholars, and program directors who need compact, understandable information on Takemitsu, but who are unfamiliar with Japanese language and music, this bio-bibliography--including sections on his works, performances, films scores, recordings, and writings--will be invaluable to musicians, scholars, journalists, and music directors alike. The annotations of the entries are especially useful in determining answers to such questions as what instruments are needed to perform a piece, what should be said about a film or composition in a program note, what analysis or interpretation of a work is appropriate or has been done before, and what Takemitsu himself has said or written about each work. Siddon's fully cross-referenced volume offers information on approximately 150 compositions, 100 film scores, 250 audio recordings, and 500 bibliographical items, while the biography places the composer's life in the milieu of post-Pacific War Japan and contemporary music in Japan, Europe, and the United States.

Great Seller.......2007-05-13
Product received as promised. Brand spanking new without a blemish. On time. Undamaged through shipping. What else could I ask for? Would buy from this seller again!
all around good resource.......2005-10-02
I bought this book as the text for a business leadership class I'm taking in college, and it has proven quite useful in only the first month of class. It goes through all different types of leadership styles and guides the reader to gain the tools necessary to being a good leader. I don't have any books to really compare this to, since this is the first business related book I've read. I especially like that there are so many different authors (ie-this is a collection of essays from various authors), thus making it very interesting and not at all biased in one direction or another. I'd definitely suggest reading this one.
A comprehensive exploration of leadership.......2003-03-21
The all-star cast alone should be enough to recommend the book - virtually every top thinker in the field is here (though aside from Bossidy, not a lot of first-hand accounts from CEOs). The chapters range from practical advice to thought-provoking theory, giving readers a solid overview. Leading and managing can be daunting tasks, so it's nice to have a resource which puts it all in one place. They've boiled each topic down to the essentials, so there's no fat even at 600+ pages. Overall, a (mostly) engaging read and a useful resource for any leader's bookshelf.

Book Description
A newly updated collection of the best leadership thinking from Jossey-Bass
This new edition of Business Leadership is based on a conceptual philosophy--that leadership is not exclusively tied to position in the hierarchy or limited to title and formal authority. Everyone has a responsibility to lead, and leaders need to be dispersed throughout--both up and down--all levels of an organization. The contributions to this revision will provide leaders with sound theory, useful strategies for leading, an appreciation for the power of context, and a strong sense of self as a leader. The book contains contributions from the best minds in leadership including Jim Kouzes, Barry Posner, Warren Bennis, Daniel Goleman, Patrick Lencioni, Ram Charan, and more.
Joan V. Gallos is Professor of Leadership in the Cookingham Institute of Public Affairs at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
