The Queen of New Wave!.......2000-03-26
This is one of my favorite graphic design books - and is well worth the price if you can find it. This shows a collection from the early years (late 70's) until the late 80's. Before computer graphics April was playing with color xeroxing and cutting up photographs. She is one of the true giants of graphic design - and this book shows you why. She was VERY ahead of her time - doing graphics with a Mac when it first came out. Like the giants (Paul Rand) she has the heart of a fine artist - and ranks with the best of 'em.

A preview........2004-12-09
Garfields first 6 books were good.
Now... here comes GARFIELD SITS AROUND THE HOUSE. Funnier and fatter, see garfield as he goes fishing, asks 'Have you kicked your dog today?' and eats his cake for his 4th birthday but eats the candles on fire as well. I really enjoyed it. It is one of my favorate books. I'm the only peson in my class who likes Garfield. It is so good.
It has comic from 11 January 1982- 15 August 1982.
It is good!
The best Garfield book of the early 1980's.......2003-03-22
I'll never forget the first time that I read this book back in the 7th grade when my younger brother checked out at the library and this book is Garfield's best book yet cause the drawings were getting better and they were starting to come up with more ideas.
The funniest moments were when Garfield ate the whole cake when the candles were still lit on the cake, when Odie eats Garfield's burger and says ribbit, his bad case of Monday's, or when Garfield beets on Odie.
If you love Garfield books, then this book is highly recommended cause it is the funniest book of the early 1980's.
a garfield preview.......2002-02-16
Garfield:He opens his mouth.Odie:he takes the hamburger!Garfield says:What the? Odie says:RIBBIT. That was a comic from Garfield sits around the house.
GARFIELD RULES!.......2000-06-24
Everybody out there keep buying Garfield books! They can be worth a lot of money someday and can become collector's items! I'm always going to keep all of mine so when I have kids they can read them!

East meets West meets Duct Tape. Stumbling headfirst into the ancient Chinese philosophy of feng shui, The Duct Tape Guys emerge totally bewildered--but not before creating their own breathtakingly crazy philosophy. Duct Shui, as they call it, reveals secrets of achieving harmony and happiness, all through the use of you-know-what.
With its terrific die-cut package (just to hold it feels peaceful, like a perfectly balanced roll of duct tape), Duct Shui is the newest work of inspired nuttiness from the guys who created the 365 Days of Duct Tape Calendar, The Jumbo Duct Tape Book, and other books.
In feng shui, wind chimes and bird feeders stimulate the flow of chi (energy) in a yard. In Duct Shui, attract birds by duct taping plastic decoys to a birdbath. In feng shui, placing a wind chime in the front area of a home or office will summon people to help you. Duct Shui teaches that if you really want help, get some duct tape stuck in your hair and then pull hard--the screams will draw plenty of attention. In feng shui, a wind chime over the stove will cure binge eating. Duct Shui says enough with the wind chimes already!-you can cure binge eating by placing duct tape firmly across your mouth. Includes a Da Ktap compass (instead of the Pa Kua compass used by feng shui consultants), its very own mantra (Duct Tape, Duct Tape, Duct Tape, whispered until tranquility or sleep is achieved), and a paean to that essential influence-the couch. Just take a roll, tear off a piece, and hear the energy crackle.
Customer Reviews:
Duct Shui is a Winner!.......2002-05-07
I've enjoyed all of the Duct Tape Guys' books (all four of them), so it was an easy decision to purchase their fifth book. I wasn't disappointed. In fact, it's my favorite yet! This book is a departure from their previous "hint per page" books. Duct Shui is still a duct tape hint book, but now couples the Duct Tape Guys' duct tape humor with a smart and very funny parody of the ancient Chinese philosophy Feng Shui - which is way trendy, and borders on the ridiculous. If Amazon had six stars in their rating system, I would have given them an extra star for this one. Congratulations, Duct Tape Guys! You have outdone yourselves!

A Beautiful Fairy Tale: The Life of Actress Lois Moran

Book Description
King Baggot began making films for Carl Laemmle in 1909 and was a major star from 1910 to 1916. Baggot then gained renown as a director in the 1920s and as a character actor in the 1930s and 1940s, but perhaps most notably, he was the first publicized leading man in America. In his two-reel Shadowsthis was a first in film historyhe played ten different characters and also directed. He founded the Screen Club, the first and most prestigious club strictly for film personnel, and became an international star in England with Ivanhoe and in France with Absinthe. As a director, he worked on Kissed, in which Marie Prevost had her first starring role. He also directed The Home Maker, a social drama that explored the role reversal between a husband and wife when such an idea was not at all accepted, and Tumbleweeds, now considered a classic among western films.
This work is a biography and filmography of the early film pioneer. It covers his early life before he broke into the film industry, traces his career from his beginnings as a stage actor in 1900 to the peak of his career in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, and ends with his death in 1948. The extensive filmography documents every known film in which he took part, and provides cast and production credits, release date, length, Library of Congress registration number, places where the film can be found today, and other information.

"All glory is fleeting...".......2004-12-09
Southern California librarian Sally Dumaux has written an exacting and sometimes marvelous biography of silent-film actor King Baggot. His history is murky; almost all of his 300 movies have long since turned to dust. King Baggot's remarkable journey from juvenile to super-star; and his eventual decline, is "un-reeled" here for the very first time. Baggot was born in St. Louis in 1879. He wanted to play soccer. He became a Broadway actor. In 1909, after finishing summer stock, he signed a contract with IMP Productions to appear in the new craze, the "flickers". Carl Laemmle's IMP soon morphed into Universal Pictures(an active studio today). King Baggot's first movie was "Awakening of Bess". Picture World reported that "It was so popular amongst the theaters that within a few hours of its release, reviewers were unable to see a copy of it in New York City". Soon Baggot, Mary Pickford, and Thomas Ince had traveled to exotic Cuba for location filming. Baggot starred in films for the next 12 years. You can still watch his "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde(1913)". "Ivanhoe", filmed in England the same year, has disappeared. Universal began moving production to California in 1915. Baggot refused to re-locate. This set him at odds with the studio. And 1920's audiences were fickle. Baggot starred in his last leading role in 1921. He became a director, and helmed 1925's famous "Tumbleweeds" starring William S. Hart. But with the coming of sound in 1928, Baggot was eased out of directing as well. His decline is well documented with newspaper articles and movie pressbooks. Baggot became a character actor in increasingly smaller roles. In 1936, MGM contracted him for the epic "San Francisco". Sadly he appears nowhere in the final film. A DUI arrest and the break-up of his marriage were further complications. King Baggot died quietly in a hotel in Venice, Cal., in the summer of 1948. One or two stock newspaper obituaries mentioned his passing. It was almost a non-event. In 1917, Baggot was listed as one of the top 3 performers in the world. But if you ask today's movie fan about King Baggot, they'll shake their head and say: "I never heard of him."
A welcome addition to silent film history!.......2002-11-20
Sally Dumaux has worked several years researching the elusive life story of King Baggot, the first King of the Movies. Her work has paid off beautifully in a wonderful biography of this nearly-forgotten early screen idol. Her attention to detail and devotion to the subject shows on every page. Silent film buff and casual film fan alike will enjoy reading this insightful story that opens up the whole world of early film. Sally, you did it! ENJOY!

Book Description
The Psychedelic 60's It was an era of musical innovation that introduced the styles which influenced Rock and Roll music for the next quarter century.
Every bit as exciting as the music, were the people who made it dynamic, expressive, socially conscious and talented artists who injected human passions into their music unlike any others before them in this century.
This book chronicles the 50 most influential artists of Psychedelia and their music, complete with pictures, stories, biographies and discographies. Also included are lists of the top Psychedelic songs and albums of all time, and genré collectibles.
You'll find The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd, Thirteenth Floor Elevators, The Doors, Moby Grape, Cream, Iron Butterfly, and many more between these covers.
If you lived through the 60's, then you'll remember this music. If you're alive today, buy the book it'll bring back great memories. And as you read the song titles and start humming to yourself, you'll be pleasantly surprised to realize how many of these great tunes you can still hear being played today.

Introduction to Psychedelic Music for 10 year olds!!.......2002-08-23
As an introductory book to psychedelic music this is a less than satisfactory book and it is definitely not the tome it pretends to be. The book focuses on fifty of the most important psychedelic groups, has some colour reprints of some classic albums and includes a list of the best psychedelic albums and singles. However, it is written in a very poor way, its overall presentation is shoddy and, very often, merely states the obvious without adding anything new. The writer's tendency to refer to his own record collection is, to say the least, annoying. For a really in depth analysis of psychedelia, I would recommend THE ACID TRIP (V.Joynson), FUZZ ACID & FLOWERS (V.Joynson) or even UNKNOWN LEGENDS OF ROCK AND ROLL (R.Unterberger).
Very Informative.......2000-10-27
This is an informative and fun read for any fan of the music from the Psychedelic Sixties. The book opens with a history of psychedelics and the roots of the music and what it was like to be alive in the late Sixties. Belmo then gives a history of the top 50 groups of the era and includes lots of little known facts and a helpful discography for each group. Very cool. There are 12 pages of color photos of the psychedelic album art work. At the end of the book are lists for the top 100 albums, top 200 songs and the most collectable psychedelic albums. Thanks to this book I have now begun my search in earnest for some of the far out albums Belmo writes about. A must have book!
Belmo's Books.......2000-10-26
I already have all of Bemo's other books and I think they're all great. My fave is THE BEATLES-NOT FOR SALE. Very detailed. PSYCHEDELIA is a great look at an era/genre of music created when the world was changing and one of the main reasons for this change was the music.
This one goes in my reference library.......2000-10-24
This book has set a new standard for those who lived in the age of psychedelia. It is well written and full of facts which few people are aware. It's obvious that Belmo has spent a great deal of time researching the subject and talking to those who actually made that era what it has become - an original American cultural experience which continues to have a global impact. Without a doubt, this one goes in the reference library.
A terrific book.......2000-10-24
An enjoyable and informative primer on the fascinating world of psychedelic music. Whether you're a newcomer looking to get started or an old timer strolling down memory lane, you'll find this book has much to offer. If you like psychedelic music, you should have this book on your bookshelf. Highly recommended!

A Useful Book.......2005-04-01
One of the better chess books that I've read and I've read alot of them. Well, I've bought a lot, haven't gotten around to reading them all :). Probably not much use to Master level players. I'm a "B" player and learned a lot from this book, particularly in organizing my thoughts during a game. The biography of Purdy in the first part of the book isn't terribly compelling. A nice addition to any collection of chess books, especially for players below 2000.
exellent help for better chess thinking.......2002-10-06
AUTHOR (1906-79) was an international master, first correspondence world chess champion ,many times australian national chess champion and editor/writer in chess magazines(mostly australian chess magazines).this book of about 300 pages has three parts .his detailed biography (about 25 pages),his excellent chess articles(about 39 in number consisting of 184 pages)and annotation or commentry to his 50 games(about 83 pages).main strength of this book is his excellently written chess articles.in my humble opinion there are few chess teachers/authors of his strength.this book is not for beginners but for intermediate strength chess players (uscf rating 1300 and above )with at least a couple years of chess playind experience
absolute must.......2002-03-31
this book is a classic just like " MY SYSTEM " by NIMZOVICH. EVERY SERIOUS PLAYER OF CHESS MUST READ IT
Wherefore art thou, Purdy?.......2001-05-30
If this book were Juliet, I'd be it's Romeo. There aren't enough superlatives I could lavish on Purdy's writing. There were so many "AHA!" moments when reading that my wife thought I was having an epileptic fit! Purdy's prose is superior yet completely comprehensible. The reader immediately sees his point. Beg, borrow or steal this book, it IS that good. The only negative (and it is a very small one) is the publisher's annoying advertisements spread throughout the book.
This is really different!.......2000-08-27
This is for me the first book on chess I have encountered that really puts first things first and explains a systematic method for thinking about any chess position. Even though the author makes very interesting remarks about strategical points he never forgets to remind you about the tactical problems on the board and a systematic way of taking care of these. For me definetely the most helpful book on chess that I ever read.
Product Description
The greatest chess teacher of all time spent his years of writing and playing chess in Australia. His "Chess World", from which these chapters are taken, was considered by many, including Bobby Fischer, to be the best example of what a chess magazine should be. In addition to the 29 annotated games, there are 3 dozen plus chapters on many facets of chess explained in plain and entertaining English. In 1953 Purdy became the first to win the world's correspondence chess championship. His wife Anne Purdy provided his biography. A personal view of Purdy as a player was provided by J.N. Hanks. Included is a large section on combinations, two chapters of which were missing from the first two editions. A number of corrections have been made to the original and first revised editions.
Product Description
The major work on CJS Purdy, originally titled "CJS Purdy, His Life, His Games and His Writings." His biography (by his wife), his writings and philosophy (over 200 pages of his best articles), and 50 deeply annotated games. Perhaps the best instruction book ever written. Belongs on every chess bookshelf-- Bobby Fischer. This revised edition has corrections, additions, and some games deleted. Part of the Purdy Library.
Book Description
Mothers are the most powerful consumers in the United States today. But to obtain a portion of the $17 trillion+ spent by moms, authors Maria Bailey and Bonnie Ulman say marketers must recognize the power of mothers, appreciate the time they put into selecting a product, and understand what it means to be a mom today.
It’s a far cry from years past. Recent Census results indicate that the mom market has dramatically changed. In Trillion-Dollar Moms, Bailey and Ulman provide background information and analysis of today’s multigenerational moms, revealing original research findings on how the differences between them affect purchasing behavior.
Drawing on proprietary research, their experiential insights, and case studies of successful marketing initiatives, the pair will empower you to secure the spending of moms with strategies and tactics that include: •Initiating publicity campaigns that resonate with mothers •Developing powerful sampling programs with doctors and pediatricians •Creating advertising campaigns with relevant messaging •Hosting special events that appeal to the mom market •Launching flex-time programs for working mothers •Incorporating women business owners into your vendor list •Designing Web sites with time-saving features for busy moms There’s no doubt that mothers spend money. And with Trillion-Dollar Moms, you’ll have everything you need to act on and capture your share of this lucrative market.
Customer Reviews:
Mostly good but badly edited.......2006-10-15
A very good read with rich statistical factoids on an increasingly popular topic. Only problem is bad editing or sloppy fact-checking. Example: page 3, "Three major factors impact...", followed by only two factors. Pages 55 and 75, hailing both Gen X and Gen Y mothers as "...the most ethnically diverse population in the history of the United States".
Packed with Knowledge!.......2005-09-27
If men are from Mars, mothers are from Venus and advertisers are from another galaxy altogether. Fortunately, authors Maria T. Bailey and Bonnie W. Ulman have a hot ticket for corporations that hope to rocket to the new frontiers of mother-focused sales. Backed by credible marketing data, real-life case studies and their own experiences as mothers in the world of marketing, Bailey and Ulman decipher the consumer motivations of modern moms and New Age grandmothers. They include excellent examples of successful corporate strategies and of some misdirected advertising campaigns as well, plus easy-to-understand charts, sidebars and graphics. This makes the book repetitious in parts, but still strong. We warmly recommend it to marketing, public relations, advertising and business development professionals.
TRILLION-DOLLAR READING FOR BUSINESS OWNERS.......2005-08-29
This book is brilliant. If you're in any type of business, you've got to understand what your customers want. And since women make 80% of the major purchasing decisions, you need to think about what your company can do to meet women's needs. Especially savvy mom shoppers. Their pocketbooks represent a $1.7 trillion market.
How can you think like a mom if you're not a mom? You can't, unless you're willing to research.
That's where Bailey and Ulman's book comes in. They've done all the work for you. From cover to cover, you'll read hundreds of case studies and research examples that prove the authors' expertise in the field of marketing to mothers.
If you're a 50-year-old male executive sitting in a high-rise boardroom designing a marketing plan, you have no idea what the buzz is among moms on the playground. Word-of-mouth can spread news about a product like wildfire.
I can't say enough great things about this book! I was completely fascinated with their studies of generational differences. There are four generations of mothers out shopping today: Silver Birds (born between 1935-1945); Baby Boomers (1946-1964); Gen X (1964-1976); and Gen Y (1977-1994). The older generations are grandmothers out shopping for their children and grandchildren, while the newest wave of moms are just entering their child-bearing years.
The authors write, "Although it is true that all moms are women, not all women are moms, and expecting to connect with a mom as you speak to her only as a woman is a well-documented misnomer...By ignoring her role as a mother and just speaking to her as a woman, you are essentially subtracting from the equation the role that she values most." In a nutshell.
The book explores each generation's way of thinking and shares the interesting discovery that it's not the mother's age that links her thinking to her peers; it's her child's age. So, you could have a Boomer mom and an X generation mom with kids the same age, and they'll have more in common than peers without children or with kids in a different age group. I've found this to be true in my own life, and it made sense seeing this fact in print.
What's the one thing that moms really want? Read the book. If your product can meet that need, you'll more likely win her over. How has technology changed the shopping experience for moms? The authors won't just tell you -- they'll SHOW you through detailed case studies.
Bailey and Ulman will also share their views on why certain products do well in the mom market and why others fail. They describe several successful marketing campaigns, as well as some doozies. For example, Ziplock bags realized what a struggle it is for moms to pack up snacks for their kids when they're on the go, and they designed a marketing strategy to show mothers they understood. It's like the authors say, "If you want to think like a mom, you have to walk in her shoes."
The biggest take-away I got from the book is that mothers today value information more than any other time period. The average mom reads 4.1 magazines a month, so this is where we're getting a lot of information. Products that meet women's needs for information will have the best advantage in the marketplace. And this increases the value of good public relations over traditional advertising.
I'd recommend this book to anyone. It's fun to read through, but it's definitely a great reference tool to keep nearby. Bailey is CEO of her full-service marketing firm, BSM Media, and Ulman is principal of the Haystack Group, a communications and consumer research consultancy. Most importantly, they know how to think like moms because they ARE moms!
--Reviewed by Heather Lynn Ivester, "Mom 2 Mom Connection" columnist
Takes Mom Marketing Beyond the Basics.......2005-04-21
This book does a great job of shattering old sterotypes such as the Soccer Mom and reconizes the complexity of marketing to moms. Bailey and Ulman offer fresh research that provides interesting, useful insights. For example, moms of different generations may be the best of friends because the ages of their children are the same, so recognizing the common experiences of moms regardless of their own age is important. This callenges traditional demographic profiles and demonstrates that the moms market needs to be considered from many angles. The book is an easy read as it often uses interviews with real moms to convey key points. I found it very beneficial and a worthy addition to my bookshelf.
Must-Read for Mom Marketers .......2005-04-01
I've had the privilege of reading an advanced copy of Maria Bailey's new book, Trillion Dollar Moms. If Mom is a customer of your business, it's a must-read.
As the world changes rapidly, Moms are changing with it and leading the way. The differences in how Boomer, Gen X, and Gen Y Moms respond to marketing in today's multi-channel, multimedia environment are significant. Maria provides a landscape for you to design marketing strategies to best connect with Moms.
