Book Description
Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741-1826) has long been recognized as the greatest European portrait sculptor of the late eighteenth century, flourishing during both the American and French Revolutions as well as during the Directoire and Empire in France. Whether sculpting a head of state, an intellectual, or a young child, Houdon had an uncanny ability to capture the essence of his subject with a characteristic pose or expression. Yet until now, Houdon's exquisite sculptures have never been the subject of a major exhibition.
This lavish exhibition catalogue, now available in paperback, is the definitive work on Houdon. With more than one hundred color plates and two hundred black and white halftones, Jean-Antoine Houdon: Sculptor of the Enlightenment illustrates every stage of the sculptor's fascinating career, from his early portrayals of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette to his stunning portraits of American patriots such as George Washington, the Marquis de Lafayette, John Paul Jones, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson. Indeed the images we hold dear of legendary Enlightenment figures like Diderot, Rousseau, d'Alembert, and Voltaire are based on works by Houdon. More than mere representations, these sculptures provide us fascinating, intimate glimpses into the very core of who these figures were. Houdon's genius animated even his less illustrious subjects, like his portraits of his family and friends, and filled his sculptures of children with delicacy and freshness. Accompanying the images of Houdon's masterworks are four insightful essays that discuss Houdon's views on art (based in part on a newly discovered manuscript written by the artist) as well as his prominence in the highly varied cultures of eighteenth-century France, Germany, and Russia.
From aristocrats to revolutionaries, actors to philosophers, Houdon's amazingly vivid portraits constitute the visual record of the Enlightenment and capture the true spirit of a remarkable age. Jean-Antoine Houdon finally gives these gorgeous works their due.
Customer Reviews:
Astonishing book about a brilliant sculptor.......2003-09-12
I saw the Houdon exhibition at the National Gallery in Washington, DC, and it is astonishing--as is this gorgeous catalogue. Houdon's brilliance as a portraitist and psychologist shines through in his amazingly lifelike busts of Benjamin Franklin, Robert Fulton, Thomas Jefferson, Catherine the Great, Voltaire and many more. In fact, the book offers a veritable Who's Who-or Who was Anybody--in the second half of the eighteenth century. Rogues and nobility alike brought miraculously to life in stone. This volume is a must for anyone interested in French, European or American art and culture of the revolutionary period. Lavishly illustrated, it promises to be the definitive work on Houdon for many years to come.

Book Description
Nancy L. Green offers a critical and lively look at New York’s Seventh Avenue and the Parisian Sentier in this first comparative study of the two historical centers of the women’s garment industry. Torn between mass production and "art," this industry is one of the few manufactauring sectors left in the service-centered cities of today. Ready-to-Wear and Ready-to-Work tells the story of urban growth, the politics of labor, and the relationships among the many immigrant groups who have come to work the sewing machines over the last century.
Green focuses on issues of fashion and fabrication as they involve both the production and consumption of clothing. Traditionally, much of the urban garment industry has been organized around small workshops and flexible homework, and Green emphasizes the effect this labor organization had on the men and mostly women who have sewn the garments. Whether considering the immigrant Jews, Italians, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, and Chinese in New York or the Chinese-Cambodians, Turks, Armenians, and Russian, Polish, and Tunisian Jews in Paris, she outlines similarities of social experience in the shops and the unions, while allowing the voices of the workers, in all their diversity to be heard.
A provocative examination of gender and ethnicity, historical conflict and consensus, and notions of class and cultural difference, Ready-to-Wear and Ready-to-Work breaks new ground in the methodology of comparative history.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating topic, fascinating book.......2003-10-17
I thoroughly enjoyed "Ready-to-Wear and Ready-to-Work", Nancy L. Green's erudite and expansive study of a century of the garment industry in Paris and New York. I've worn clothes for most of my life, but never knew much about where they come from. Now I do. Clothes don't come from stores-- they come from people, piece by piece. People with a story to tell.
Green's vastly-researched work is not only a history of the people, usually immigrants, often Jews, who have populated the garment industry. It is also a social history, an economic history and a technological history. The book is not an easy read-- it is a complex analysis of complex topics-- but it is a worthwhile read. Green successfully weaves the topics into a fabric of consistently excellent quality from beginning to end.
I found the book fascinating. I recommend it to anyone who wears clothes. Naked people probably won't be interested.

Neve Campbell has overcome many obstacles to become one of the most powerful young players in Hollywood today. Campbell's poignant story will give readers an inside look at her transformation from a complete unknown in small-town Canada to a major motion-picture star.
This is the first book on the dynamic star of Party of Five, the Scream trilogy, The Craft, , 54, and Wild Things. It provides insights into Neve's family life, her formative years in Canada, her nervous collapse at fourteen, her breakup with husband Jeffrey Colt, and her many amorous adventures with some of Hollywood's hottest leading men. Plus, readers will learn previously undisclosed details about the making of Scream, Scream 2, and Scream 3, and what really goes on behind the scenes of Party of Five.

"Must" reading for all Neve Campbell fans!.......2000-03-04
Fans of the TV show Party of Five, the movie I Know What You Did Last Summer and others will find this a fine biographical sketch of the actress: the first book to explore her life. From her professional acting appearances to her breakup with her husband and her love affairs with notables, this is revealing and absorbing.
GREAT BOOK.......2000-01-30
Finally a book about what I consider the best of the crop of young actresses to arrive in the past few years. The book only confirms what I've felt about Neve, that she truly is a good down to earth person. This book gives great insight into her casting on Party of Five and all the behind the scenes information on the Scream films.
Give this book a try. A must for all Neve and Party of Five fans.

Captivating read.......2000-01-12
I have loved Neve Campbell ever since PO5. She is definitely one of my favorite actresses of all time. This book was really interesting. It showed me a side of Neve I had never known. I hope she continues to make great films because she is talented, beautiful, and deserves recognition.
GREAT QUALITY READING.......1999-12-27
It's amazing how much we don't know about the lifes of our favorite stars. You just assume they pop up overnight, but what actually goes in making of the star like Neve Campbell few people know. The hard work, dedication and ability to take risk is absolutely unparallel, I recommend this book to everyone who thinks, that becoming an actress is just luck and good fortune. I think it's the only book on Neve and what a great one to have. By the way the pictures are very good.
Customer Reviews:
Very good.......1999-08-23
I found this book to be excellant, perhaps the only dark sun thing you can buy new over the net. Excellent things for wizards if you do not have dragon mkijngs since it repeats all the things from DK for wizards. some excellant information enhances the classess and rleplaying of them immensly. this book is let down slightly in its wizard kits, some are not bad but some are a little stupid and pointless. btu overall this book is a must, however i personally prefer the SKs getting their power from a mysterious (now extinct) elemental being (in terms of granting templars spells) but thats just me
Great book.......1999-01-06
Drak sun is a land destroyed by magic. There are still wizards, they are hunted and killed like the salam witch trials. There are two types defilers and preservers. Defilers want to cast spells at what ever cost, even the land and their lives. Preservers, however, want to keep the land in one piece and help it survive. Both are equally hunted. This book is filled with magic and abilities great for darksun and non darksun settings.

Customer Reviews:
Buy the latest version.......2007-09-16
This book is useful when you are just starting an online business. Just make sure you buy the latest version so that some information is not outdated by the time you are ready to set up your online business.
Worth it's weight in gold if you're going online!.......2007-08-18
I just got this book last week and I'm not even done with it and have gotten so many 'nuggets' that it has more than paid for itself already! It's well written, easy to understand, organized extremely well for easy reference and full of helpful resources.
The section on 'Keeping it legal' saved me great error already (I was going to buy a domain name that could've infringed on a copyright) and I have found several free web builders online that are 10x's better than what I had been using. There's so much practical information in this book that I no longer feel guilty for buying it new.
This book is zero fluff, tons of examples and free or very reasonable resources, and lots of food for thought. The table of contents is so detailed that it makes for a quick reference (does anyone read a book like this cover to cover?) Greg Holden's writing style is personable and to the point and very easy to understand.
I truly don't understand all the reviews that say this book is no good, not sure what they have been reading, but I have no less than a dozen books of this nature, and this is one of the few that isn't 75% fluff. I'm somewhat of a website newbie, starting about a year ago trying to do my own website. It's alot harder (for me)than I originally thought and have tried no less than 6 different hosting accounts, 4 different online web builders, and 6 different web editing software trials (Expressions, dreamweaver, publisher, coffee cup, page spinner and frontpage). One of the best discoveries in this book was that Firefox offered a FREE...quality...web editor!
This is the 2007 edition, maybe people were referring to the earlier version of the same title. I have gotten way more out of this book than I thought I would. I guess I must be a true "Dummie". It's definitely worth your time checking it out if you are new to the online business world, you can always resell it on Amazon and recover your moola.
this one really is for dummies.......2007-08-05
One of the worst "For Dummies" books I've ever read. Normally, I'd rate for dummies books a 3 or 4.
Not worth it.......2007-04-19
You could do an online search and find more information than this book gives you. I did not enjoy and I returned it. It is broad and never really gives you step by step instrucions on how the webite actually works and how to create it.
very rudimentary, broad overview.......2007-04-14
People who use the internet regularly will not get much out of this book--it's no joke when it says "for dummies". Greg Holden does give a broad overview of the many aspects to starting an online business but even then the information is outdated and at some points, simply not accurate making you wonder where this guy gets his facts.
In an environment that is not only competitive but also changes rapidly it is important that you are equipped with the most up to date information. This book however, still proclaims AOL king and web sites using tables and frame "advanced". Although the book was published in 2006 (and in its 4th revision), it feels more like it belongs to the 90's.
So even if you are new to the internet and need a place to start I recommend you find yourself a different book.
