    Book Description

Kara Walker (b. 1969) has emerged as one of her generation's most important artists. Best known for her provocative black paper cutout silhouettes, she confronts stereotypes, sex, violence, and power relationships through Civil War-era parodies, narratives, and a mastery of craft and installation.

This book, which accompanies an exhibition organized by the Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College and the Williams College Museum of Art, presents a comprehensive overview of Walker's work, beginning with her first cut-paper wall installation, Gone, An Historical Romance of a Civil War as It Occurred between the Dusky Thighs of One Young Negress and Her Heart (1994). Other highlights include the 1996 series of twenty-four watercolor drawings, Brown Follies, which is reproduced in full as an artist's book within the book, and installation views of many of Walker's exhibitions. Recent drawings and projections are also featured. Throughout the book are a selection of the Walker's writings reproduced as they were created typed on index cards. These writings reveal a rarely seen side of the artist, whose words are as provocative as her installations and drawings. The essays discuss Walker's place in art history, formal and narrative readings of her work, her relation to culture at large, and issues of race, sexuality, and representation addressed in her work.

Copublished with the Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College and Williams College Museum of Art.

        Book Description

Christianity in the Near East shows a variety in rites and churches, each with its own traditions. Ecclesiastical dress is an important part of these traditions. In the course of the centuries liturgical and monastic vestments have developed from basic -- often civil -- clothes into a most complicated system where symbolism has been mixed with practical purpose. Ecclesiastical Dress in the Medieval Near East provides the reader with a survey into the liturgical and monastic dress of the most important Near Eastern Churches. The motive and starting-point for this investigation were the questions surrounding the liturgical costume of the Nubian Church. Through a method of comparison of Nubian dress with Coptic, Syrian, Armenian and Byzantine costume the author not only throws light on the Christian culture of Nubia, but also traces influences, similarities and differences between the costumes of these churches.

New pages are included, featuring scenes where The Dragon first meets Rapture, where he battles WildStar, and where Debbie Harris' mother is brought to the Police Department for questioning. It also includes numerous pages and notes from Erik Larsen's personal sketchbook. The TPB also comes packaged with a comic book (pictured below left) called "Back-Up Stories," which reprints the backup stories that were featured in various issues of #1-#6, and features an all-new cover by Jeff Matsuda. Stories include "Star" by Rob Haynes & Tony Harris, two "Mighty Man" stories, one by Victor Bridges & Terry Austin and one by David Williams & Karl Kesel, and "Rapture & Ricochet" by Adam Hughes & Karl Kesel.

The Dragon gets involved with a team of super powered operatives that help him deal with the increasing levels of superhuman crime. He meets Rapture, for one.

This trade has the start of the actual Savage Dragon series, and also has some of the backup stories from those books, including some Mighty Man fun.

5 out of 5 stars Why aren't you reading this comic?.......2002-08-16

Savage Dragon is the best funnybook on the market. If you're tired of all comic book characters being clones of the Authority, try this title. It's reccomended for fans of Top Ten, The Hulk, cheese fries, and that chewing gum you can only get with baseball cards.

            Book Description

A Force to be Reckoned With! is an invaluable resource for anyone who is seeking to unlock the mysteries of prayer and enter into a deeper relationship with Jesus.

Author Giovanna Caponiti couples her 30 years of study of the Word of God with the experiences of her personal life to bring the revelation of how to become a force to reckoned with in prayer and in life. In understandable language, she presents the revelation of the five anointings of prayer and explains how to flow in them.

Giovanna guides you through the process of understanding and maintaining intimacy with Jesus Christ, coupled with insight on praying in Spirit and the power of fasting. She also addresses the hard question of why a loving Father allows bad things to happen. It is a book of concise revelation from cover to cover by the grace of God.

“I have read your book [and] after reading only the first couple of sentences, I simply was not able to stop. I am humbled that God has positioned me to ingest the very Spirit of life in His Word on these pages… Although this is a book on prayer, it is profoundly all-encompassing. You are teaching Kingdom principles in each sentence.”—Terry Arnone, Great Falls, VA

From the supplier: Corporate leaders should foster a new relationship with their workforces that is suitable to an emerging environment where lifetime job security is no longer an option. Such a relationship should help employees prepare to survive and succeed in a globalized economy that is characterized by accelerated technological innovations, deregulation and international integration. Business executives can help people prepare for the new environment with a three-pronged course of action. The first step requires initiatives to increase employer training and career development. The second involves the improvement of schools to prepare students for work. Finally, the third step is the development of social policies that foster employment. Business leaders can accomplish the first step on their own and can provide their support to the two other steps.

I always enjoy "weird news" stories, and this book has a full year's worth, from reminders about what happened to people like Martha Stewart and Michael Jackson to obscure local items (who knew there actually was a zoo where visitors could kiss the bears?). It's also amazingly up to date, with articles about events that only happened recently (in fact, the book itself has the look of something that's been rushed into print). The writing style is the same throughout: a funny headline that comments on the story and acts as an early punchline, followed by a few sentences describing the highlights of what happened. I laughed out loud at some of those headlines, but more than that I found a lot of the bizarre-but-true items quite fascinating. When you read this book, you'll realize that 2005 really has been a strange year.

                          Book Description

Cinema--invented just before psychoanalysis formally developed--primed the public and scholars to rethink ideas about dreams. The author describes how surrealist artists purposely applied Freudian dream theories to their art to make the public aware of "modern" ideas about dreams. Most of our current cultural consciousness about the psychological value of dreams is traced to classical and contemporary cinema. This work examines how residuals of past approaches to dreams make conceptions of dreams in psychoanalysis and science more complex than ever today. Scholars and students in the fields of psychology, psychiatry, cinema, medicine, and religion may find this volume useful. The book also examines academic psychiatry's increased emphasis in dream study on neuropsychiatry and psychopharmocology, as well as managed care's decreased compensation for dream therapy.

                            Book Description

Guillaume de Machaut, fourteenth-century French composer and poet, wrote the first polyphonic Mass and many other important musical works. Friend of royalty, prelates, noted poets, and musicians, Machaut was a cosmopolitan presence in late medieval Europe. He also served as canon of the cathedral of Reims, the coronation site of French kings. From this penetrating study of his music, Machaut emerges as a composer deeply involved in the great crises of his day, one who skillfully and artfully expressed profound themes of human existence in ardent music and poetry.

I am just finishing up this book in preparation for presenting new insights into Machaut's Motets to my colleagues in a doctoral level choral literature seminar. In short, this book is a brilliant contribution to our understanding of the works of Machaut, and a must have for any serious student of the Middle Ages, especially musicologists.

Dr. Robertson's strikingly clear and original points are firmly supported by her familiarity with an exceptionally large and significant number of sources from that time. It is abundantly clear that she knows what she's talking about, and, indeed, what she knows is a great deal.

Additionally, it is apparent that Dr. Robertson possesses that rare gift found in only the finest of scholars: the ability to organize and convey her ideas with a clarity and vitality that is both riviting and a delight to read.

One hopes this is only one of several such landmark offerings in the history of music and culture that this exceptional scholar is capable of bequeathing the world.

For a whole host of reasons, this book belongs on your shelf.

Fantastic Locations: Dragondown Grotto features two double-sided poster maps. Three maps are suitable for RPG and skirmish use, while one is an RPG exclusive. An accompanying 16-page adventure is suitable for any mid-level compaign. Enemies include creatures from the War of the Dragon Queen miniatures expansion releasing in the same month. The two poster maps can be put together to form a dragon's lair, while the reverse sides feature more fantastic locations that players can explore.

Like the other Fantastic Locations, this one has two battle maps (double sided) and an encounter booklet. The art is uniformly well done and the maps can be easily flattened and laminated at your local office supply store to increase their durability.

These are some of the nicest accessories published by WotC, in my opinion. They get plenty of use in DDM Skirmish and my home RPG campaigns.

Writing for nonprofits is a juggling act. One's job might entail writing grant proposals, newsletters, thank-you notes, case statements, and Web-site material--each for a different boss. The most successful development writers take the time to both experience their causes firsthand (sleep in the shelter, go to rehearsals, visit the wilderness) and cultivate personal relationships with their donors ("people give to people"). You'll give yourself an amazing head start when applying for a grant, say Joseph Barbato and Danielle Furlich, just by following an organization's guidelines and getting your math right--it's surprising how many fundraisers do neither. Make your point once, clearly, and don't forget the human element. "You aren't just asking for money," say the authors of Writing for a Good Cause, "you are asking to help people." Barbato and Furlich, both veteran fundraisers, interviewed both grants administrators and development writers for this guide. The result is an inside view of the arcane workings of the world of fundraising that would make any novice feel more proficient immediately. Their "gotta-get-it-out-right-now, how-late-is-FedEx-open? Down-and-dirty proposal kit" is a terrific tool when there isn't time to write the "knockout, beguiling, exciting, can't-put-it-down, and surely can't-turn-it-down fundraising proposal." And keep in mind: when a donor gives your proposal the nod, say thank you. Twice. In fact, say Barbato and Furlich, "It is almost impossible to thank a donor too much." --Jane Steinberg

4 out of 5 stars Writing for a good cause!.......2006-04-25

Excellent book with very practical tips on writing to get funded. There are many grantwriting books and resources available, but this is one of the better that I've found for writing persuasively for major gifts. Great practical advice on formulating winning proposals, concept papers and other grant writing tools. Definitely recommend to grantseekers of all levels.

5 out of 5 stars Not just a guide to writing proposals - a guide to life.......2002-08-12

Not surprisingly, this book provides advice that -- if applied literally -- will assist you in writing excellent proposals to fund your non-profit organization's ventures.

Surprisingly, the advice contained herein -- if made more generic in your mind -- is excellent advice for entire areas of your life. Sounds hokey, true. But honestly, boiled down the advice can be listed as:

                            1. Identify what the problem is. Do your research until you really understand the causes of the problems and their many effects.

                            2. Identify how you will know when you have made the problem better. How will you know when the problem has been alleviated? What intermediate steps need to be taken? How will you measure your progress along the way?

3.Identify what tools are available, and which are still needed, to move towards a resolution, or diminution, of the problem. Be specific here. Vague generalities are useless, but the brass tacks of a solution are absolutely priceless. Who has access to these tools? Who can make difficult things easy?

                            4. If you are asking for someone to help you with this problem, present the whole equation to them in a light that makes the most sense to *them*. This doesn't mean to lie, or exaggerate. It only means to focus your proposal in a way that makes them see it most personally.

                            5. Proofread what you have written, to be sure it says what you want it to say. Then proofread it again. And again. Get it right, because it is a hard and fast representative of you. This should be true in everything concrete you put out in the world with your name on it.

Now, all of this can be applied to writing a grant proposal. And much of it can be applied to the other things in life. Filling a job position, finding a home, working out a deteriorating relationship, educating yourself or your children ... you name it.

It's so rare that a book directed at an audience of specialists resonates with so much broadly applicable truth ... and it was such a delight to find it. I plowed through this book last night, reading every word, applying its advice mentally to all sorts of issues in my own life. I am pleased to report that it opened my eyes to solutions that had eluded me until now.

Wonderfully written, amusingly told, full of great advice to writers of all persuasive materials, this book is a gem.

5 out of 5 stars I put sticky notes on half the pages.......2002-08-09

I took this book, along with many others on fundraising, out of my local library. Though I'm new to raising funds, I've made much of my living writing articles and books; I wasn't sure it would have much to teach me.

This book was so startlingly useful that I had to buy it. It will likely become your most dog-eared fundraising guide.

5 out of 5 stars Puts the Fun in Fundraising.......2002-07-11

When I am on deadline and desperately in need of help, "Writing for a Good Cause" is where I turn first for guidance, solace, or inspiration (seeing as how our office manager objects to open containers of alcohol at one's desk). Not only is this book full of incredibly practical writing tips in handy list form, it is also very funny and a page turner.

The heart of the book is a clear guide to how to write a great proposal, but other valuable topics are covered, including newsletters, case statements, interviews, and the like.

In one section, the authors mix genuine examples of great fundraising writing with an imaginary proposal to fund the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge. They not only convince you to help build the Brooklyn Bridge, you're ready to buy it.

The bridge is not for sale, but this book is. It is well worth its price of two fast food lunches. Buy it, read it, and be happy.
