Crammed into this slim volume are a dozen basic techniques and about two dozen project ideas for unusual and colorful neckwear. Incorporating various fabrics, ribbons, buttons, beads, cording, and other embellishments, projects--which are more like soft-sculpture pieces than traditional necklaces--include an elaborate shawl collar laden with French-wire ribbon flowers, chokers of embroidered fabrics arrayed in layers, and shaped collars of satins and metallics pieced into a vivid crazy-quilt look. Though a few items appear to be a bit dated, most are wonderfully innovative. A large tear-out sheet bound into the back of the book provides full-size patterns for the projects.

Extreme Paranoia: Nobody Knows the Trouble I'Ve Shot!
Ken Rolston Manufacturer: West End Games ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0874311624 |
Customer Reviews:
Classic Paranoia from one of the original game developers!.......2002-03-21
The author, Ken Rolston, was part of the development team for the original Paranoia RPG (1st and 2nd editions) as well as a writer of several of the original adventures, most notably "Orcbusters" and "HIL Sector Blues." His excellent imagination and writing style come through in his novel, and his unique understanding of the setting definitely make this book a must-read for Paranoia GMs. Homer-R-ICK-2 is the main character at the beginning of the book, and suffers from amnesia since the memory transfer from his original clone (Homer-R-ICK-1) wasn't successful. This sets the stage perfectly for an outsider's introduction to the setting, since clone 2 knows nothing of the world in which he lives (which he doesn't, not for long, at least). In true Paranoia style, Homer and his band of erstwhile troubleshooters encounter myriad obstacles in the course of their mission, and run through several more clones in the process. Although I think Rolston missed the opportunity to showcase the backstabbing and infighting that characterize a RPG session, the classic elements of the game were all there: the great characters, crazy bots, hazardous R&D equipment, outfitting SNAFUs, etc. Rolston also includes a number of footnotes (in the tradition of Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett) which are helpful to those who aren't as familiar with the game.
Ken Rolston's view of Alpha Complex and the world of The Computer focuses mostly on its "humorous" aspects and less on the "dark," which made for a thoroughly enjoyable book. Although the book leaves out the typical Troubleshooter backstabbing and blackmail (and indeed, because it does so), the characters manage to achieve their mission goals and receive their just rewards (well, sorta). A fun book...by no means meant to be taken seriously.
Not the Paranoia I know and love.......2001-06-18
This book, however, fails in attempting slap-stick humor. Too many things happen at once, and the nature of the setting is not explained in an effective manner. All the quirky machine screw-ups play as just plain stupid. And the dialog between the team members and the citizens they encounter is worse than even the worst Paranoia session I ever played.
If you play and enjoy the Paranoia game, please steer clear of this book, as it might make you quit playing from sheer disgust. If only it were possible to give a rating of less than one star.

Great Hollywood Films Study Guide !.......2003-01-18
Although the some movies he uses for example are very old (Casablanca, Double Indemnity, Birth of a nation, King Kong, Psycho, etc) and sometimes its really hard to get on DVD, nevertheless they are all important & significant films that all film buffs should watch.
Stanley was my professor when I was in college. He used to be a judge for Emmy Awards. He's been teaching films/media for over 30 years. By reading this book you can really tell that he really love movies!
This book is recommended for beginner to novice film students. Or just normal people can enjoy as well. Many diagrams and pictures.
It is also a great book if you are making a movie.

Singing in the Wilderness: Music and Ecology in the Twentieth Century
Wilfrid Mellers Manufacturer: University of Illinois Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0252025296 |
Book Description
Displaying the broad erudition and intellectual agility that have informed a lifetime of scholarship, Wilfrid Mellers offers a set of diverse reflections on how western art music illuminates the shifting relationship between humankind and the natural world. Beginning with two turn-of-the-century operas--Frederick Delius's A Village Romeo and Juliet and Claude Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande -- that present humankind as lost in a tangled wood that is at once internal and external, Mellers develops the theme of wilderness in sociological, psychological, ecological, and even geological terms. He discusses Leo Janá ek's Cunning Little Vixen ("the ultimate ecological opera") as a parable of redemption and explores the delicate yet dangerous equilibrium between civilization and the dark forest in works by Charles Koechlin and Darius Milhaud. Elements of wilderness and the city combine to infuse the music of Heitor Villa-Lobos and Carlos Chávez with a blend of primitivism and sophistication, while a creative tension between desert landscape and industrial mechanization inspires the works of Carl Ruggles, Harry Partch, Steve Reich, and Australia's Peter Sculthorpe. The volume culminates in a discussion of two American urban folk musicians, Duke Ellington and George Gershwin. By suggesting how the "musicking" of ecological issues articulates twinned perspectives on music and our place in the world, Mellers raises intriguing questions about the links among tradition, talent, learning, and instinct. Brimming over with fresh ideas and unexpected cross-pollinations, Singing in the Wilderness is a stimulating addition to the oeuvre of a distinguished and inventive scholar.

Jack Welch & The G.E. Way: Management Insights and Leadership Secrets of the Legendary CEO
Robert Slater Manufacturer: McGraw-Hill ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0070581045 |
Amazon.com
A recent Fortune poll cited General Electric Company as America's most admired company. Much of the credit went to Jack Welch, GE's chief executive for the past 17 years. During his tenure, GE's revenues and profits have grown enormously. Its share price has soared, making GE the world's most valuable company. And the key to GE's success, according to Jack Welch and the GE Way, is Welch's fanatical devotion to a personal philosophy of leadership. Author Robert Slater has made a growth industry of his own out of Welch, penning two previous books on him, The New GE in 1992 and Get Better or Get Beaten! two years later. The same territory was plowed in 1993 by Noel M. Tichy and Stratford Sherman in Control Your Destiny or Someone Else Will.In this book, Slater draws extensively on Welch's own words to deliver his now familiar message: keep it simple; face reality; embrace change; fight bureaucracy. Bromides these may be, but Slater's account of Welch's fierce efforts to lead a global, multifarious organization of 270,000 people does inspire admiration, even if it does not enable emulation. The book provides fresh insights into GE's shift toward service businesses, as with its takeover and transformation of NBC. Most timely are Welch's closing thoughts on trends in the global economy. Jack Welch and the GE Way is a must for the legions of "Welch-heads" out there and for anyone else interested in this brilliant leader's perspective on the future of business. --Barry Mitzman

A Good Book But I Prefer Jack's Own.......2005-12-24
Disappointing.......2005-06-07
Author Paid By The Word.......2004-04-06
However, as a book goes, it would appear the author was paid by the word. Each of the "secrets" is presented, reviewed, repeated, and presented again in a 300+ page book that would better be summarized in about 20. I kept reading after the first two chapters thinking I would learn somthing new, but honestly, save your money, read chapter one at the library, and go home with just as much insight.
To the publisher, I'd recommed an "executive summary" version for the next edition.
Absurd.......2003-10-06
GE's bureaucracy makes the government look like a paradigm of efficiency. GE is probably the most politicized, bureaucratic, inefficient and bloated organization on the planet.
Jack Welch is incompetent. Read a comic book instead: You'll find more truth in one.
Obsolete.......2003-02-21
